      Be very careful and do research first. Many people have lost money here with bad business planning.

    I was surprised-chocked with the prices in the shop this summer, for example the price of Greek olive oil is cheaper in the UK Vs Greece £4.50 vs 8€ for extra virgin.. Same for butter £2.70 Vs 5€, feta cheese £1.70 Vs €2.80, I was thinking the prices might have doubled in the UK since Brexit but still cheaper than local.. That does not make sense.. have the Greek wages increased?? they must be struggling with some of these products. Having said that I am aware of a poor year this year in the production of olives, we just stock up in the UK as the prices are still 'low'... compared to Greece anyway. Thank you for the video!

      I'm also following another CZcamsr in Spain who mentioned very high prices in Spain for Spanish extra virgin olive oil. Not sure if it's a weather issue and not sure why UK prices aren't affected. I'm in Hawaii. I buy olive oil from a farm in the Peloponnese but it goes through a New York distributor then it's shipped to me. I haven't seen any rise in prices over the past year.

      We pay anywhere from $15-40NZD per 500ml. Used to be cheaper but over the last 5 years, it has gone through the roof.
      You can buy some really nice olive oil made here, if you buy direct and in bulk (20ltr).

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Oil price here varies week to week, we never need to buy any as we are always given loads. A recent survey across europe showed greece prices are amongst the highest for imported stuff. Local produce can be found really cheaply direct from the farm. Oil prices are normally around the market value outside of the supermarkets. At the moment its around 10 euros a litre direct from the press. But its the end of the season and the presses are closing for the year.

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes the olive harvest was poor this year. And also in spain and italy so oil prices will go up soon.

    Based on your experience, how much money would someone need to get a pretty decent start living in Greece?

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  Před 8 měsíci

      Depends on if you are buying or renting or need 1/4 mil for golden visa etc. Bringing a car or need to buy house contents? So many variables but if you need a personal answer then join us on patreon and give us a few more details 😀

    Hi Andy and Tanya, I love your channel, you two are great! I have a question how did you obtain your tax Id. Can you get it online?

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  Před 9 měsíci +1

      the tax number was a real pain as we were incovid and just before brexit so our situation was pretty unusual. Our accountant got it for us. Apparently its tricky and best left to a professional.

    I would be working off double (euros). So houses are cheaper, but lots of other things are about the same, except for locally produced food.
    I wonder if people actually stay? Everyone talks about retiring in other countries, but as you get into your late 70’s early 80’s will you be willing to still stay? Or do people have back up plans/houses to return to.

    • @LivinginGreece
      @LivinginGreece  Před 10 měsíci

      About 50 50 i would say. We know some people who cannot go back as they now have nothing back home and not enough money. Plus its sunny here. Others miss family and friends and head back after a few years.

      Not as far as we can tell. Obvs people talk about it but there is not any elevated concerns.
