I just bought a year subscription to Roon, and I gotta say this is one of the slickest, sexiest, most impressive pieces of software I have used. I just have my Roon Core setup on my laptop feeding directly to my Chord Qutest, but wow I am insanely impressed with this. I am just scared of what will happen if Roon ever goes out of bussiness, because to me this has become such essential component in my setup that I wont know what to do if I lose it!
What are the odds roon would go out of business? Especially now that 2.0 and ARC have launched. I want to buy a lifetime membership but I'm worried of exactly this.
Just made one with 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD and saved ÂŁ1075 !. Thanks for the video. It made the job very easy. I love Roon.
Found your channel last night and watched several videos. Nice, well balanced reviews. Well done and Thanks!
Such a classy well made channel. This is the 3rd time i'm watching this video.
Got my NUC, followed this video (and the Roon guidance), and whaddya know? Reasonably straightforward way to superb quality music. Thanks, John!
Roon indeed rocks. A couple of weeks ago, I started using Roon on my KEF LS50 WII system. Within one week, I was looking to and did dump my Aurender N100H from my main system. I bought and, today, set up a dcs Network Bridge from which I also run Roon. I canât believe that I waited this long! The connections to other related music the, better than Tidal, Tidal searching, the lyrics to songs, the interface! I love it all and above all, this dcs really rocks - what an incredible product, it seems that it was made for my Directstream DAC.
Addendum: Iâve turned the Aurender into a NAS. All is good.
Thanks John. Your video helped me setup my Roon. Had some problems loading the Codec's but all sweet now. cheers
Amazing content! Amazing channel! Amazing video quality! THX!
Hello John, I got the NUC10i7 and Let me tell you man that it works like magic. it was really easy to setup. Sound got better cause I had an old windows 10 computer. The DSD conversion works perfect up to 512 without problem. With the PC I could not get DSD 128. Thanks for the video.
I donât use roon, but the amount of money youâve helped others save who want this product, is pretty bloody amazing.
Simply lovely John. I am far from being an audiophile but I am digging your videos. Content great, quality superb and you make everything understandable. Every video I do learn a few things. Thanks for that
John,Amazing Video. Thanks for sharing this. I get to see what devices and Products that are new.Truly enjoyed. I was just talking recently about the audio that doesn't bring good audio to some of the new vehicles and always nice to see what is nice for the Home. Thanks for sharing Deb.đđ„đŻâ
Great vid John watched this a couple of times now. Finally got up the courage to buy the nuc etc. And am waiting for it to arrive now so that I can set up Rock. Thanks to this video you have made it seem do much easier to set this up. Well done.
What has been your experience with the nuc and Roon?
So I was able to download Roon core to my old Mac Mini i7. Running the 14 day free trial. My local music files are on a Synology and it works just fine. Really nice and easy to use.
Iâm 68 and would love getting the lifetime subscription but it sure is pricey at US$699! They really want you to pay a monthly/yearly subscription. Sure wish they offered a senior discount!
Excellent video. Demonstrates to me why âmusic firstâ audiophiles find Roon so bewitching... For me itâs two key things - 1. The endless ârabbit holesâ of new music discoveries and ease of use across multiple file sources that Roon enables. 2. The flexibility and integration of multiple endpoints using many different bits of hardware. Itâs ONE place to integrate all this streaming and all the endpoints. It would be really difficult to do that any other way. I started with an Intel NUC core and then migrated to a second hand Innuos Zenith SE.
To anyone wavering - just build a NUC as John shows here and try it. My warning though - you wonât go back.....
Great Job!! Thank you, I'm thinking about using Roon for a music server. Thank you for the Tutorial!!!
I met a fella who has Roon and got to see it live for the first time. I said to him, "That Darko guy on CZcams is always gushing about Roon." He knew who I meant. Now I'm intrigued so I came here for a walk-thru.
Darko, you hit all the beats for me in this review. The end points you mentioned are a good option for one of my older Wi-Fi/bluetooth speakers that I really like and do not want to part with. Building a dedicated Roon server is also a helpful option. I have a late-model Intel NUC (home build) and a new Mac Studio 2, both of which I use, so building a dedicated NUC for Roon is easy-peasy. Or maybe I will finally build a NAS.
Thanks for all the helpful information you provide!
I built a Roon Rock (Mock) this weekend thanks to your video!
Thanks for the video planning on getting one too.
This was amazing. Thanks!
So Iâm really late to the Roon game but are listening to my music on Roon via iem an headphones, the sound is amazing. Also the fact that I donât have to worry about saving storage om my devices is a plus. Now the Roon ready endpointâŠ.
I just got into the audiophile world. I will be buying this lifetime membership ship next week.
great job. Enjoy this.
Thanks for the heads up about Purple Mountains. It is great! Just the lyrics of the opening track are enough to grab you ... I met failure in Australia etc. Ha ha. Dark humour indeed. Cheers...
Great video. Thank you.
I love ROON though it is not the only thing I use to enjoy music. I added a ROON core to my home a year ago. I did the NUC with a fanless case and purchased the lifetime ROON membership (all together for the cost of a Nucleus without the lifetime membership). It was a little DIY to set it up but ROON gives great instructions. Thanks for the video. It is awesome!
Roon is some good Schiit ! I love how smooth is swapping between endpoints and dunno if it's just me, but it makes everything sound better.
Aside from that, I dont get why most people insist you need at least an i3/i5 NUC to run the Roon Rock or the Core.I run it on a mini pc, a thin client in specs for today's standards and I am not seeing any difference from when I run it on my gaming rig which is a lot more resourceful.
HW: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3355 @ 2.00GHz, 4GB of RAM and an old M.2 Toshiba SSD
OS: Arch Linux with Roon Core on top
Output: Schiit Modi 3 and then onto a NAD C 316BEE Amp
Resources usage when playing Tidal or local WAV/FLAC files:
CPU tops at 35%
RAM tops at 40%
Thank you very much for this âTutorialâ†Greets from DĂŒsseldorf! Lasse
Terrific! Especially cheap for me as I have a NUC lying around I wasn't using. Thank you.
nicely done! tanks!
Great video. There are a few points worth adding. 1) The size of the N.2 drive you put in is not relevant since it can only hold the operating system (no music). I put in a larger drive thinking I could use it for storage, and that doesnât work. 2) It would be great if you could expound on the âadding missing codecâ part of the video. I got through it, but it was not intuitive.
17:38 'Good God man, of course I am sure.' Haha, very recognizable.
klasse Video John
That expensive aluminum roon box reminds me a lot of the cases from
hd-plex. Passive cooled all aluminum
Hello, I appreciate the time and the production you put into your channel. I feel like I get a lot out of them. This is almost a year old and I wanted to ask how is the ROCK working out for you, if you are still using it. I am in a trial with Roon and trying to decide if I want to use the ROCK or get something from Bluesound. Thank you
Love your tutorial videos! Is your heater broken on your home?
Well, youâve tempted me and provided lovely clear instructions, so Iâve made the leap and bought a used 10I3-blah, blah, blah NUC for $200 + RAM & SSD for pocket change. This will (hopefully) serve my Watson Audio Emerson streamer. Fingers crossed.
Thank you. After months I plucked up the courage to have a crack at this. Iâm no techie and it took a little bit of head scratching but I got my Core up and running in a few hours. Really pleased with it. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. I love the savings. One question: what was it you put on top of the NUC when finished and why? Ok oops, that was 2. Thanks for sharing all your reviews and knowledge, it is very helpful as I am a newbie audiophile.
FYI I live in Iowa USA. My family is originally from Jatznick and Bremen!
Liked, subscribed and overdraft limit suitably adjusted.
Darko đ my favorite Audio reviewerâŠâŠ
The cheque's in the post... đ
Roon is essential.
Very nice channel đ You gave me an idea to try this monitor with an android os
This video definitely went in a different direction with the NUC. I am wondering, why not build a traditional NAS and have some sort of split OS, if not just a well set up Linux based OS.
For me, that would be better. Then the NAS serves all of my storage and streaming needs, including audio. I'm not familiar enough with RoonOS, but I'm sure something could be figured out.
Side note, Ventoy is amazing. Just move the ISO file over and done. Never have to format a USB drive again. I keep Windows installs on it, as well as multiple Linux installs / tools. That way I also don't lose the file transfer capability of a USB, and still have instant access to my bootable OS images when needed. I've been praising Ventoy for years, still suprised when I don't see it mentioned, but I understand was out of the scope of this video.
Great video!
Thanks for bringing me into the future. We are renovating our home and designing all sorts of multi room audio setups, I was going to base it on squeezebox as itâs what I have always known and loved for decades. (God Iâm old.) Must investigate this Roon.
Nice wee Dalwhinnie 15 near your Roon. A fine dram.
Great video tutorial! Thank you but that is way too much âworkâ for me. Have you any experience with the Small Green Computer i5?
A roon rock built on a NUC10I7FN, 1TB ssd and 16GB ram and put in an akasa turing fx case is a lot cheaper than a roon nucleus plus for better specs. If you don't need or want to put the NUC in an akasa turing case, you can tweak the NUC's fan curve to match what akasa is recommending for their fanless cases. The NUC still runs quite cool and it's still very quiet with the fan curve setting
I stopped using Roon just because when I was using Tidal via Roon I couldnât add a song into Tidal playlist and thatâs a very big deal for me.
I don't agree with everything you say, but you're dead right about the hair. After 6 decades of trying to have a cool hair style, I'm finally to the point at which I really don't give a ***t. A few minutes with a good trimmer and I'm set. No fuss, no muss...zip,zip and Bob;s your uncle.
Nice one John, oh and thanks for allowing comments as I was going to ask how to get DSD256 files to play on an Audiolab 8300CDQ but I have now found out how; Foobar2000 and some tweaks. I like your videos and as people who like hearing great quality sound it's a nifty bit of kit you put together here. Keep up the content, 75K views since Valentine's Day is good going, btw what is that Cartridge on the red P2?
Just discovered Roon last night. Trying out the free trial. Looks amazing during my short time with it. Would literally pay you to do what you did in this video for me haha. Looks like my Mac will have to do for my nucleus. đ
Itâs very easy to set this up, and a remote Core has some advantages - your Mac can then just become an endpoint - only needing to be on when you want to listen to music through it. A real strength of Roon is the use of a host of different hardware that can become low cost endpoints - from Chrome Audio pucks through to a Raspberry Pi (with or without HATs). A word of warning - once hooked by Roon, you wonât go back!
Ridiculous pricing lifetime
I'm about to build a Roon Rock system. The only thing bothering me, is that Spotify doesn't integrate in Roon.
Thank you for the video. I am looking for a way like this to listen to my music at home but also remotely. Does room support remote listening?
2:30 in and I've taken away zero information.
Thanks for this guide !!
Curiosity : could you please let me know the brand and model of your nice coffee machine ?
Looks like a Flair manual espresso maker.
Hi John,
How would the Innuos Zen mk3 compare to this NUC as Roon server soundquality wise?
Iam considering using the Innuos Zen mk3 as a Roon server and streamer to my Hegel H390 via the digital input USB in the H390. Would this work or are there better solutions?

I am not here. I am elsewhere.
Yes, great walkthrough but where can I buy your jacket?
See from your bottle of Dalwhinnie that you're a connoisseur of Scotch! I'm sure that after a few sips Roon will sound even better!
You may have covered this... But whats with the weight on the NUC when you place it on the cabinet top?
So you have speakers in nearly every room, how about the loo?? Great videos btw and subscribed yesterday, looking to upgrade from Sonos where Iâm looking for better sound quality eg the home office and man cave. I like the look of the elac arb51âs and just looking for a suitable streaming solution that delivers better quality than Spotify.
I bought a NUC and Akasa Newton case. The case makes the NUC fanless, so no more fan noice.
Hi John, great video, loving the content on your channel. Being an ultra newbie to the world of HIFI, at the age of 51 Iâve just bought my first amp and speakers. Roon seems like a brilliant option but I have a very quick question. The nucleus from Roon is expensive for what it seems to be, the intel nuc seems like a good idea but Iâd prefer and apple solution. Would be just a possible to setup a dedicated Mac mini M1 as my Roon core?
Yep a mac mini will work a treat.
Buying a used Mac mini i5 for 200 euro is much cheaper as well.
Can I install the Roon Core on a separate Partition from My operating system? My OS is on C: drive like most. Can I install the Roon core on a different partion such as D: or E:? keeping it with my music on the E: partition or does it need to be on C:? I just built a new powerful machine just for HQplayer and Roon. Thank you for all your great video's.
I am watching the installation of roon, missimg the codecs part and don't know how to copy it, could you please teach me in detail?
I love David Berman! He was me of my heroâs and losing him has effected me more than any artist death since Kurt Cobain.
My ROON player running on a 4th generation iPad Pro and in an iPad Mini stops playing randomly. It works better in my iPhone XR, but still freezes when you least expect it. Other times it plays for hours! Anyone else having issues with Roon?
Because of you Iâve lossless encoded my 4950 CDs, got a Blue sound Node I love it. I hate the Roon client Itâs searching is horrendous. I canât seem to find alternative clients. Recommendations?
So besides the effort involved in building the Intel Nuc (in fact very little effort), am I to understand that there aren't any other drawbacks? Which would be wonderful news if that were true. I would like to try Roon for the first time and this seems like a cost-effective way to begin doing so. Would you agree? Ps. Excellent / Helpful l tutorial as usual. Thank you!
Very few drawbacks - many benefits. Give it a go....
Does cd ripping also work with nuc?
Another expensive add on I donât need đ
I only own wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. Will I be able to work with this setup with wireless tools? Thanks, Robert
What's that round cylinder for that you placed on top of the nuc?
Pretty sure it's a doorstop - for reducing vibrations. Does it make a difference....that's not something I'm going to comment on đ
@@gavinhall4112 it makes zero difference...
7:07 John, could you please clarify if that is a Sub Bass leaf?
Does anyone know: can you adress multiple devices simultaneously with roon, aka synchronised multiroom audio?
I must confess, being a noob in audio world, but what is that 'thing' you placed on top of the nuc server?
so is Roon a content provider that streams music access?
But with TIDAL Masters subscription + Roon⊠how do I make use of the MQA files?
Basically getting Roon makes sense only if you use Tidal and Qobuz?
What am I missing using Airplay 2 to stream on my Lyngdorf TDAI-1120?
Not missing much unless you're into Hi-Res audio
The downside of Airplay though is that you need an intermediary device, such as your phone. If you were having a party and then left the house, the music would stop. This would not be the case in the Roon+Qobuz setup
I don't get the pint of roon if you already have a streaming service
That's so cool do you sell them on your website I'd buy one in a heartbeat I was thinking about getting the rs7 server over the nucleus you can save $400 on the price of the 4tb and use with much more devices so basically you get the 4tb rs7 server for the same price as the 2tb nucleus and it's compatible non roon players
do i have to pay monthly if i build my own like you show and only play music i own on my own hard drive?
Why thank you
I would like a demo of your coffee gear. Please.
Is the Intel nuc really necessary to run Roon server? I wonder if anyone has tried running the same on a Synology NAS or a raspberry pi for that matter???
Rufus is the best for loading iso onto a usb
Pardon my nativity, but what was the unit placed on the NUC?
Its a weight - John uses these often to keep lighter weight devices in place
One thing to note, for longevity sake, you should not store all your music on one single drive! Drives WILL fail, so having a NAS or a pc running a RAID configuration to make sure drive failures don't delete your music is super important and can't be achieved by just a NUC.
So Curious. The title of this video translated by CZcams to spanish is 'Rocas de Ron' that is quite similar to 'Rum on the rocks'.
Do i need to drink a rum on the rocks while im wonder how to configure a roon rock server in my chain?
Challenge accepted haha
Iâm looking for the specs on the Intel NUC used in this video. I canât find them in the comments. Is anyone able to assist?
I just ordered a Mission LX-Connect. I plan to install Roon Core on my Raspberry Pi 400 4GB booting from M.2 and running Rasbian OS 64.
Is there someone who have a instructions on how to connect these parts, I would be grateful đșđș
I would love an X Sabre 3 but I doubt I'd use Roon even though it's baked into the design. Such an expensive thing. I don't subscribe to any music streaming services. I just wouldn't use them. I buy hi res flac from qobuz outright. I have 26,000 songs in my collection. All stuff that I listen to regularly. I think Roon would be a waste of money for me. I recently bought a 2015 Matrix Mini-i pro. I'm glad it is the version that came out before all the Roon crap was put into it. It cost half the price of the new ones when it was new but I got it for a steal second hand.
John. Can you run this on the Google Chrome operating system,?
Canât believe it Roon doesnât support cue files.. and seemingly no plans to address this.. was very excited and about to buy a lifetime license but..
Fun project but a bit too techie when there are other streaming options available.
Ronn is the buggiest most user unfriendly infuriating software for managing available tody - with the best sound quality you can get. Someday we will have great software with great audio quality but not any time soon
Wouldn't Ipad Pro with 64bits CPU be ideal for Roon Rock?
My living room has bookshelves, plush seating wood floor and rugs. Floor length glass on either end walls have lined curtains. The tv is not as high as your set up, and the tower speakers are behind it.
The ceiling is 12â and has dark wood âjoistsâ crisscross.
The clapping test has no reverb, in a comfortable room furnished to our taste.
Short hair with thick rims is a yes
