You might best know Rob 'Beatdown' Brown from his popular CZcams channel, but after you watch this hour-long lesson you'll also know him for his incredible sense of pocket and groove.
Rob emphasizes that "no one will yell at you for sitting in the pocket," and that overplaying isn't necessary. Most drummers get hired to play pocket, and for their sharp decision-making skills: knowing what to play and where to play it.
In this lesson, you'll learn that drum parts don't need to be flashy to work, and how to get into the right headspace before practicing your pocket. That's why Rob is confident that this is something you can improve 'overnight': it's a conceptual exercise that'll help you immediately change the way you think about drumming.
Once you find your rhythmic foundation, you'll learn how to practice playing in the pocket, how to use the click in a few different ways, and why you should play 'from the ground up' by focusing on your feet first.
After this lesson, you'll know why the hi-hat is such a powerful tool for creating grooves and why internalizing subdivision is so important.
Lesson Outline:
0:00 - SONG: "Broadway Hustle" by Rob Brown (from the playalong album "Beatdown's Pocket Builders")

That’s some funny shit!
Love this man 🥁
30 second notes. Brilliant

U got Rob Brown on here
Love him so much
Such an amazing teacher
Enjoy Caleb!
Beatdown! What a great "get" for the channel, he's the best!

BEATDOWN BROWN BABY
Y'all made a wise decision in inviting this man
Yepppp, he's the best mentor in youtube.
The BEST!
Speaking of drummers with good chops, I will paraphrase Rob. “The reason I like good drummers is because of their decision making. “ You’re right, Rob! That’s why I LOVE listening to you!
The intro alone sums up almost 10 years of drumming.
Every little thing he does is magic 😎
Huge thanks to Drumeo for getting Rob Beatdown Brown on the channel! This is legendary!
Cheers Jeff!

This lesson is such a breath of fresh air. When Rob talked about drumming becoming a spectator sport, I had to run for cover...because truth bombs were being dropped kid.
This is so true, what a great reminder. And it goes perfectly with the current MD issue where Steve Jordan reminds us that players like Fred Below "weren't afraid to play simply, and they didn't worry about somebody saying 'Anybody can play that.'" No guilt or shame here though, just a desire to learn and improve! Thanks Rob and Drumeo :)
@@ryanandtricia Finely stated my man.
I don’t think its all bad. Someone can play drums for any reason, because its music and not a sport there is no wrong answer. If you want it to be a spectator sport then you can do that too.
"No disrespect..."
Naw fuck that. ALL disrespect.
LETS GOOOO! I’ve been waiting for this! Rob is the BEST, man.
Awesome! Enjoy, Martin! 🥁

One of the best Drumeo lessons up to this point. Rob Brown is the beat king.
@getr dun That dude should consider roasting his drums, too.
A drummer friend always told me to play with space, instead of making big fills. That will spark a different kind of creativity.
Absolutely!
A drummer who doesn’t think they need to fill every second of the song with high speed riffs, rolls, flams, accents, splashes, crashes and other assorted bullshit?? They still exist!!! Thank you for restoring my faith in mankind 🙏🏾
I'm one of them but I'm trying to recover.
Some drummers always simply stick to the beat because that’s all they can do.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but for drummers to criticize those with more skill than them can be cringe.
I like simple..partially cause I can’t do fills haha.. but I also never wanted to really.. I like playing drums for the feels more than the flash,
@@unclerhombus I’m not a drummer at all, I’m a guitarist. If I decided to shred and solo over the top of every piece of music, the music would suffer. I just know that the groove is more important than the flash. Thought you knew too.
Dave Mattacks, when asked to play a fill said, "Do I have to?" It wasn't that he couldn't, it's that he knew the groove was the most important part of the gig. I grew up playing Jazz and that was a hard lesson to learn. Being in Blues bands cured me.
"Nobody's going to hire a drummer for a drum solo on a record!" - he could've walked out of that place after saying this, it would be just the lesson needed.
Funny you say that cause my buddy first day I met him he had me play a song in the studio never heard it bfore that day and halfway through and right after a breakdown he asked for just that for me to solo almost through the rest of the song,It actually turned out to be a very cool song,But doesn’t happen very often!!!
Funny 😁 I just hired a drummer on Fiverr to do a solo 😎🎶
@@NintenDub it's true that chops will get you attention and pocket will get you hired long term into a band that pays you. At the top end you'll need both.
Until then, I'll tell you what, when you need a crazy chop, you can go on youtube and learn one.
That woulda been hilarious
@@NintenDub Interesting comment.
I found Rob Brown on CZcams several years ago. Rob's clarity on drumming is brilliant. I locked on to him when all else on the Net kept my attention for 30 secs, lol. Great to see him on Drumeo.
My man rob at drumeo yeah!
😎🥁
"Stop being a sucker" Truer words haven't been spoken!
im so dead when he said that lol
The Groove Master Downtown Rob Brown is in the house!!
I feel you’re Hatred
@@elliot5950 *your, and, what? 😂
THIS IS PROBABLY THE ONLY TIME SOMEONE COULD SAY YOURE IN FOR A BEATDOWN AND YOURE LIKE”HELL YEAH!”
I’m a bass player who has come to a lot of the same conclusions as this guy. It’s encouraging to hear such a high level guy share the same ideas.
Mr. BEAT DOWN himself! How awesome is that? Drumeo has made it to the big time now! 😄
So glad you guys finally collabed with Rob. Been watching him for years, he's amazing!
Rob Brown just went up and casually burned entire chops community lmao i love him
Meh, chops are overrated 😅😅
Because fuck them
No he didn't. Not at all. He just taught drummers to be more cautious of overplaying.
Plus, he's speaking from the perspective of a session drummer. Not every drummer has to play like that and only an arrogant one would ever thing "my way is the RIGHT way!"
Also, just thinking chops drummers even need to be roasted just makes you seem arrogant as well
St Mindless yea, to people who don't have any LOL
We all could be better drummers if we had both. Your attitude sucks
@@HugoStiglitz88yes!! Thank you. This is exactly his point. 👍🏼👊🏼
I agree with him! "MOST" drummers today focus on putting as much chops as possible on a song
Yes, I agree the amount of chops drummers put in can be overwhelming. However, after watching many of Rob Brown's videos I've wondered why he is so reluctant to do any of his own. I find his playing very boring.
I'm not hating on chops, it's judt sometimes it could be too much. I like what he said here that he'd rather be told to play more than to play less
@@Minikin24 I'd say that's kind of missing the point of his videos. For the most part they are practical lessons in improving your groove, feel and rudimentary skills. Another way of looking at it, it's cool and all, watching Marco Minneman play a different time with each limb, but to enthusiastic amateurs like myself who want some practical tips on becoming better musicians, Rob Browns' stuff is gold. That's why the dude gets so much love, that and the fact he makes it accessible by not flinging a tonne of chops in your face
Yeah we need to go back to the basics of drumming, far too much emphasis on chops and people seeing great drummers on youtube following in that influence. Being a great studio musician is where it is at and learning how to not only hold groves but develop your own phrasing and feels is incredible important fundamentals. You listen to guys like morello and rich in their recordings and they can do it just as well in the studio as they do live, same for guys like cobham, vinnie c etc.
@@davidgomersall7185 The thing is Marco Minneman is a great drummer, who has practised these basics long ago, now he puts that time signature thing on top of the "pocket layer".
But you have to be able to play in the pocket to make difficult time signatures and grooves sound tasty. Thats the problem I guess.
Rob’s a true pro man. One of my favorite educators out there.
Rob Brown is a groove legend. It ain't about showin' off. It's about precision, and he's a master.
CONGRATS rob
He's one smart dude. No word of a lie, I got halfway through the vid and was reminded that I needed to practise. He's a no bull*hit, inspirational and motivational teacher for sure.
I'm going back to drums after 13 yrs break. Lesson like this let me feel I can enjoy to play simple and solid. Definitely one of the best lesson out there.
Great to hear a drummer and Drumeo show the fantastic new breed of drummers that no matter how clever, fast, intricate or complex your playing is, at the end of the day groove is king. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
14:17
When you're so locked in that pocket, the splash decided to groove with you without you hitting it lol.
How?
Yooooo what the fuck? That is some paranormal shit right there.
I heard it too and in 37:29! 😱
The splash cymbal is mounted in the tom Bracket connected in the bass drum. So it moves when rob kicks the drum.
@@paulregalado30 Yeah realised, just messing about haha.
Big fan of Rob Beatdown Brown! Rob is that rare combination of intense talent along with being a down-to-earth and generally great person. You can just tell on his videos... he cares about drummers and wants to help people get better. It shows. Thanks, Rob and Drumeo!
Thanks for putting this up! Rob Brown, the legend!
Rob is a soulful man and a very good drum teacher
10 min in and already one of the most important lessons I ever seen
the opening tune is rocking! The dude is a pocket beast.
But the shoes, oh why?
Still as amazing as I watched it 2 years ago!
"No one hires a drummer for a drum solo on a record"

GO Rob Brown, thanks for all you do and thank you Drumeo for connecting the Drumming community. Jared best move ever!
Yyyeeeesssss!!!!! I was waiting for this moment for a very long time! He's on drumeo!!!
Yay! Enjoy, Avery!
This man is the drummer’s drummer. I f**king love him: A simple, straightforward, no-nonsense, common sense approach to the drums.
He’s certainly got chops, but they only come out when necessary.
Bee’s. Knees, man.
BeatDown is MY MANN!!!! YES baby!!! Just so you know I been watching you & you have touched MY life for ABSOLUTE SURE!!!
YOU ARE THE MAN Brother!!!!
Beatdown Brown is the man! It's not just that he is a great drummer, he is an outstading teacher and coach! He makes things make sense point blank period!!!! I"m very new to drumming and starting at 40yr old of all things, yet I know a great teacher when I see one. Thanks brother for what you do on CZcams as you have help me support and amplifiy the praise and worship at my church that had no drummer.
So cool to see Rob on here!! He's solid! Great addition to the Drumeo crew of awesome players!

Thanks Cora!
Rob is the man! So glad he is finally on Drumeo.

Between listening to Rob Brown and Drumeo !!! I am picking this straight up! You all describe everything but I can figure it out myself! Thanks you guys keep it up
That's great! I am not blind but have practiced a lot with my eyes closed. Hope you're still having fun now that you've had it for a year.

Ooo I really like Rob! crazy drummerand teacher!!
He's not crazy ,he's good.hehe.
Drummers often underrate Ringo, but his fills were melodic and memorable, like the Funk Brothers drummers were. They were part of the larger arrangement, thinking of drums as melodic instruments as opposed to merely rhythmic. Pick Withers played great melodic hihats. Cheers guys!
Been subscribed to Rob Brown for a few years now and I'm glad that he's finally gotten the recognition he deserves on Drumeo. Drum on!
I can't play anything with 8th notes that sounds good
"First of all, stop being a sucker" lmao

This is hands down my favourite Drumeo lesson. What a dude! I could have watched another 2hrs of this.
This is, without a doubt, the best drum lesson on youtube. Killing it Rob!
Rob is a fantastic teacher. I've learned so much from him. So glad you gave him this platform!
Wicked pleased to see Rob Brown here. He's a fantastic teacher, and makes great content. Fantastic drummer. Happy you guys got him for a session!!
Rob Brown and Drumeo together! Two of my favorites.

Been a fan of his stuff for many years, and I'm still learning so much from him! I've been wanting him to be in drumeo for so long and it's finally here! Cheers man! Can't wait to learn how to build a better foundation in drumming!
finally... someone who plays music. not just going nuts in the drumset.😂😊😊
a gifted teacher & humble !
Wowza. You finally got Rob "Beatdown" Brown on. Freaking awesome. Absolutely love his drum tutorials. What a guy.
Absolutely love his Drumming and Groove ! In all my years of drumming I’ve never been hired to play drum solos….not that a well played tasty drum solo isn’t cool…but I don’t recall seeing people dance to a drum solo 🤘🏻
A very important lesson this one , learning about playing and adjusting grooves, learning how to create your own phrases and be musical is an incredibly needed set of skills for modern drummers.
This guy is a good drummer and teacher!
The off beat fill drill with the click on the up beat is brilliant. You just opened up a whole new world of ability for me. I learn so much every time I watch you.
Awesome drummer. I like his channel. Everyone should listen to this , because if you can't play in the pocket , you can't play.
Rob Brown! His tuning vids saved me 🙌🏼
I absolutely love Rob! He’s such a huge help and inspiration. It’s awesome that you guys had him on Drumeo!!
Rob gave me the confidence to actually go out and play in a jam for the first time. Not gonna say it was good.....but it didn't suck. And I'll take that. Thank you for all the great lessons.
I love his style of teaching so much. And I'm eager to get home and try this. I recorded myself playing Nothing Else Matters and Animal I Have Become. Neither are that hard. I've been playing like 3 months now, and you'd swear it sounds like nothing else was recorded day one with my pocket difference. In the faster beat, I sound decent, but with the slow 6/8 of nothing else matters, omg. It's horrendous; I'm just all over the place.
It's nice to have Rob at Drumeo!
Agreed! I hope you enjoy the lesson 😎

Loved hearing Rob tell the truth.
It's all about pocket and groove.

Glad to hear it! 🙂
Thank you for getting Rob to come up to Drumeo. I have learned so much from him over the years. He has a way of getting his point across that no one else has. It's like jamming with a friend in your basement. Great addition to your arsenal of instructors.
My favorite drum video.
I love the way Rob Brown thinks, all super helpful.
He's so deep in that pocket that he's tickling his toes.
He's so right when he says that a good musician makes good decisions. That often means the decision not to play. Look at Mark Knopfler
Rob is "The Dude.."
And the way he played Take Five at the end was just beautifully done.
Bravo!!
Soooo happy to see “Beatdown Brown” on Drumeo!

So Happy to see a full Drumeo lesson presented by my favorite instructor! Rob is responsible for at least 50% of the progress I made this year. Thanks man, and keep doing what you're doing!
Rob Brown is a very cool and laid back dood. I watched him many times and he always gives a great lesson and makes it super simple to understand!
" I would rather be told to play more than to play less"...…Spot on Rob!
I use the click of my turn signal to practice steering wheel drumming every day of my life!
Funny. I drive a truck all day. Air drumming madness
hell yeah. Isn't it just the worst though, to be sitting behind another car at a traffic light that also has the turn signal on, and your signals sync for a while, only to eventually slowly drift apart? As a drummer, it feels horrible everytime :D
Rob is the man been watching him for a long time, also for being a drummer for 20 years i finally learned how to tune my heads on my own and the way i want it to sound. Rob your a blessing for not just new drummers but for the experienced too!
This is an awesome lesson! So glad to see beat down Brown on Drumeo!! This is what I try to focus on all the time. I love playing in the pocket. This lesson will allow me to improve my pocket playing. Awesome!

I will become a Patreon member next year January I got a T-shirt
I really like how Rob teaches. Very simple, easy to understand and definitely something we can all apply. Great teacher!
EXCELLENT! Rob Brown is the King of the Pocket! Great teacher!
"The internet... has almost turned drumming into a spectator sport." "Drum-Olympics". SO TRUE. It's supposed to be art, not a sport.
Street drummers have been doing this for years - showmanship is usually needed for tips. It's not the same as bands or session work. It simply has moved over to social media - everyone's a street drummer on the internet.
"The subdivision always comes first to me", oh yeah
This man Rob is spot on. Brilliant.
What do you get from Rob Brown? WISDOM. The First Great Commandment for drummers: DON"T OVERPLAY. Don't try to be flashy; do what works. You don't have to show off chops. Stay in the pocket. Man...what priceless advice (at least if you want to work!). What a great teacher. So glad I subscribed. I almost don't have to teach anymore; just point my students to a Rob Brown video. [But don't tell my students....] Viva la Rob!!
"The space between the notes" straight up neil peart territory
says: Stop relying on flash and fireworks to get your point across.
wears: Ferrari shoes.
Well he already has a point across so he can do flash and fireworks
Respect! Best drum teacher I have encountered on the net so far! Thanks Rob, big fan of your channel, and thanks Drumeo for bringing him on!
This man always articulates my thoughts/approach to drums/song writing far better than I ever can. Forever groove and pocket > chops/flash. (Mad respect to the chop/flare folks cause it is entertainment)
