- In the sequel that no one asked for, I try to come up with a possible alternative plotline to improve the messy writing of Cassandra in season 3 of Tangled the Series!

Biggest issue with Cass’s villain arc was that after her turn to the dark side, they treated Gothel choosing raps over her as the only straw, not the last straw for Cass
Cass’s change from “I don’t wanna hurt Varian, just use him to lure Raps, he did nothing to me so I won’t harm him” to “I’m gonna kill all of Corona” also felt ridiculous
ugh exactly. Thank you so much for pointing that out! There were so many (more or less) subtle hints about her not being satisfied with her role in the series, even in the first season. However, during her villain arc the thought "ayo I wanted the abusive mother :(" was presented as her main motive.
They literally did her so dirty with that particular scriptwriting, her character had much deeper potential on so many levels and they just chose to ignored every single possibility to justify her actions in a much more relatable & thoughtful kind of way. Anyways, since it's a cartoon for little girls/boys, I do think that the socialist cass discussed in this analysis here could be a little too complex for its aspired target audience. Sadly.
Thats becaus ther used the plot ther had from the beginnend when ther startet planing. The issue is cass was createt AS THE VILLAIN.

Zhan tiri could have Manipulation her to fall back onto the hate in s2 to go back to her plan.

I really like this revision of the show. Especially because it addresses how incompetent King Fredrick is. The fact that it was never addressed in the show really really bothered me LOL. I like that you give Cass and Raps more time to heal their relationship and more of a chance for Cass to redeem herself. And her overall motivations are much much better.

@@0calliestar0 i think it could actually be accepted by disney, as it would be a really cool way of introducing children to political/social structures and the injustice and ignorance that can be caused by them, all in a somewhat light and indirect way as it’s a fantasy setting/conflict. tts itself already dealt with a lot of heavy themes like that, so i think your rewrite fits very well and honestly?? in my brain it is 100% canon now

Cas also goes against her father, who she wanted his approval of for so long. It feels like they dropped that relationship development while we see Varian and his father work on theirs.
Well, she felt pretty betrayed by him for not telling her the truth about her past and Mother Gothel.
Honestly, we didn't even get to see Varian and Quirin work out their issues. It happened all off screen, which was infuriating. We only see them after the fact.

I'm currently reading a fanfiction called 'Walls of Stone' which rewrites the wnd of season 3 if the group failed at saving Varian. Cass and Zhan Tiri use him the whole time to get what they want. Honestly, I actually prefer this to the actual show. Some of the changes made actually make more sense, it also gives Varian more screentime which I think season 3 lacked. It felt like they were building up to so much with him and we never really got the payoff. There are SO many instances in the show that point to Varian being born with a connection to the Moonstone that it seemed like the show ended before we got there 😭
When I first started watching the show, I instantly thought Cass was Gothel’s daughter. My initial thought was that she *knew* she was her daughter and was secretly working for her out of misplaced loyalty from the conflicted perspective of the abused. Of course, Gothel being dead, it would have been more of a traumatized dead-set “carry out of plans”.
Another theory I had was that she didn’t know who she was the daughter of, but her adoptive father, the captain, did, and that’s why he didn’t trust her. If the series was willing to dirty the image of the king and his guards more, this would have been an easy reveal to make Cass feel betrayed, and fit the ol’ “You want me to be the bad guy? Fine, I’m the bad guy.” Line
I do like the idea of cass's arc being someone who strives to become great only to be constantly upstaged by their more talented friend, a friend who has this huge destiny, and for that jealousy to grow to the point that she falls to the villain's offer to become great herself.
I remember struggling to catch up to Season 2. Disney rarely reran the show, I missed most of the episodes on demand, the show wasn't on any streaming services I owned at that time and the freaking Evil Cass screenshot was on every CZcams thumbnail about the show ever!

Well this revision certainly sounds more engaging than the original and calls out Fredrick’s rather incompetent rule. And makes Cass turn into villainy more coherent with her character.
Personally speaking I’m reading a Tangled Canon divergence AU called “Darkest Destiny “which explores what IF moonstone Cassandra won? Instead being robbed of the moonstone by Zan Tiri like Canon Cass she kills her at the last second and grabs Rapunzel’s sundrop and becomes Ultimate Cass, taking over as the official antagonist.

You know it’s funny, when I was watching the show when it was airing, I thought I was so clever in suspecting Cass as the betrayer lol
I love this, and want to offer my own critique. I think cass's egalitarian ideals need to be a bit more militaristic cause tbh cass is still justified in her actions against an oppressive aristocracy, except for evil warlock summoning ofc. If you make it a more miltaristic idealogy, you could also have cass have a coup with the King's guard that support her. Rapunzel would need to balance that and have a her as aristocracy but more empathetic to the people, while cass is authoritarian but like greater good vibes. Also you could have the evil child corrupt Cass's men, adding extra threat and an obvious way i-cant-spell-their-name-warlock to take power
I agree that incorporating the people of Corona’s opinion into Cass’s rebellion would be interesting, I thought that was an important perspective on the situation that the show ignored
In my opinion if cass got to varian early she could've easily manipulated him into helping her by promising to help free his father I mean his intelligence combined with her power they would've been unstoppable

Amazing revision! I would've liked to hGe more focus on the Corona government since Frederic and Nigel's actions in S1 never get touched on later on.
I think if they had Cassandra's goals focused on that instead of just being in Rapunzel's shadow I think it would've worked a lot better especially if Zhan Tiri used those goals to her advantage.(maybe Zhan Tiri could've revealed to have felt the same way and maybe the reason she turned against Demanitus and the sundrop and moonstone)
If Cassandra's arc had ended with Cassandra's Revenge we could've got more focus on Zhan Tiri as a character and how she turned out the way she did. Maybe she was at some point similar to Cassandra and just wanted to do good but soon saw the corruption of the world itself and wanted the sundrop and moonstone to take revenge and teach everyone a lesson.
Also maybe after Cassandra's Revenge, Zhan Tiri takes over Corona and Rapunzel, Cassandra, and the gang have to travel outside Corona for reinforcements(allowing everyone they met on the journey to make a reappearance)
During their journey, Rapunzel and Cassandra make amends and gain a better understanding of each other's views.
After gathering reinforcements, they go to confront Zhan Tiri.
Zhan Tiri overpowers them due to the eclipse wearing Rapunzel. She takes the sunstone and begins to destroy Corona.
Rapunzel would feel like a failure, but is built up by Cassandra, Varian, and the others and they discover the remaining moonstone piece and Rapunzel uses it to gain the power to fight Zhan Tiri.
Everyone helps Rapunzel fight Zhan Tiri again, Zhan Tiri would try to attack Rapunzel but Cassandra would get in the way, sacrificing herself for her.
Rapunzel and the others then use her hair to pin Zhan Tiri down and then cut Rapunzel's hair reuniting the moonstone and sundrop, destroying Zhan Tiri.
Rapunzel then uses the sundrop/moonstone to heal Cassandra and fix the destruction Zhan Tiri had done.
Though those are just my thoughts.
Thanks for figuring out how the finale would work for me haha. I think the idea of them reuniting with their old friends is really cool and could make for an exciting final battle. I also like the idea of drawing a parallel between Zhan Tiri and Cass, and it could be used to examine if violence is a necessary or effective way to bring about change.

I too was frustrated with cas and how long it took to be resolved.
The solution at the end of the show felt so rushed, like cas turns from "im gonna kill you " to "im sorry for everything " in a heartbeat, just because her power was taken and the big bad evil guy reviealed to have used her.
I had another idea but I like urs more!
I was thinking king Frederick told Cass she needed to protect rapunzel at any costs on this trip, as he is still scared of her leaving the kingdom, and when Cass discovered that wielding the moonstone and sunstone could kill you, she got into arguments on how dangerous this was with Rapunzel. when she realized she wouldn't listen, cass stole the moonstone and ran far away from Rapunzel. At first, Rapunzel and co try to find Cassandra, but the moonstone's power+ zhan tire start corrupting Cassandra and she starts attacking😋
I think that could work with the version of Moon Cass of this video, like she still has to follow orders of the ones she hates the most. Also, it would have given more weight to that one line of Rapunzel in the final episode saying that she's grateful with Cass of taking the moonstone becuse there was a big chance that she would died.
I’m literally just going to keep watching and listening to your plot until I fully convince myself that it’s canon. I love how you wrote Cass and it satisfies me a lot more than her original writing.
I really like your rewriting, it's more consistent, I would definitely read a fanfiction about it. The only thing I don't agree it's Eugene's arc being wiped out. I think it has potential Eugene being royalty too, because it adds a new layer of complexity to your revision of Cass-antiroyal. I think that with Edmund gone, Eugene had to be its successor. Although I really wish there were some hints about this during the season, maybe with Eugene trying to find something about his past and the Brotherhood appearing in the equation as the people who left him in the orphanage. Idk just rambling
I agree, even if i don't with the original show, in this version would make more sense and would add a new layer of annoyance that Cass already has to Eugene. I always tought that Eugene being royalty was never fully explored and it felt kinda wrong that the prince of the Dark Kingdom was left without protection at an orphanage, right? Or is it just me being hysterical XD
At least he could have a mentor to be his parental figure and it could add to the conflict that Eugene had to accept Edmond is his real father.
Loved your revision! But if they wanted to keep the lead up and shock value while adding a new super villain… they could have gone the route of “super deep sleeper cell” and that would have made for a very different kind of ending😏
Nice analysis. Perhaps you might try a "Rewriting" video of any of the characters from Korra, Star vs, or Steven Universe (respective examples like Korra, Amon, Moon and Eclipsa Butterfly, underutilized antagonists like Toffee, the Diamonds, or Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond)?
I'll have to check out one of those shows! And in general I'd like to try doing another one of these reimagining's with a different series
I loved this rewrite. This would've been such a better alternative to the Moonstone Cass arc. I also agree with Eugene's ties with being Edmund's son and long lost prince not being that great. I honestly wish they went this direction with the story.

Also, to recommend a s3 rewrite, Destinies Fulfilled on AO3 is really good - it does take a very different path from this but is equally interesting, and as well as making Cass more in character actually explored Zhan Tiri more as well, and it’s generally really cool.
I love this series shows that everything is not always what they seem to be.💜

While I’m not sure if this is entirely true, so take it with a grain of salt, I remember at the end of season three seeing an article that said the show may or may not receive a season four. Because a season four was not denied nor confirmed by the end of season 3, I have a feeling it was still up in the air during the season’s production. Somewhere during season 3’s production the team decided to go another route in order to try and finish up Cass’s character arc because they might’ve been relying on the idea of a season 4 to finish her arc originally but at some point had to change it to fit into season 3. I feel like this could explain the pacing. But as I stated at the start this could be entirely false so. 🤷

In my mind this is how it went I don't care about the cannon, this is so good and everything and more that I wanted from Cassandra's moonstone villan-arc. I also think it would be way better and way less weird if they made Zhan Tiri and adult woman like how she appears when her and Demanatus were fighting way back in the past, and for the realm she was trapped in to be darker or at least more empty because it was just so silly that it kind of undermined Zhan Tiri as a foreboding villan.
I like your little fanfic changes. Also don’t feel self conscious about changing the magic system, I have a fanfic I’ve been writing that started as a season 2 rewrite plus Varian because I love him and want more of his character and ended up changing the entire lore around the sun drop and moonstone including the name of the dark kingdom because seriously what kind of a name is “the dark kingdom” anyway!
i love it! the arc works much better this way. i also have something to add, and I'm not sure if this is a well known fact or whether it interferes with your version, but apparently the writers of the show confirmed that cass was intentionally coded to be in love with rapunzel. just thought i'd put that out there 🤷
Honestly this is an amazing re-write! Of course I still love the show no matter what. But i think instead of this 17:50 Cass would just say "You don't have to forgive me, but I'm so sorry" or snt like that. Like I feel like she would know she messed up and wouldn't expect her to forgive her

If we can believe that this plays in the late 18th century then cass rebelling against the aristocracy would make the most sense and fall in line with (you named it) American revolution AS WELL AS the French revolution, both happening at around that time. I saw someone mention that this kind of concept would be beyond kids though but I beg to differ. It could still be presented in a way that kids can understand that the way King Frederick ruled was not in any way helpful to the people as a whole nor the people that were closest to him and that Cass's ideas have merit but she may not be in a position to implement them in a way that is acceptable to the high society which is where Rapunzel comes in. She could be the one that brings it all together in the end as she stands more or less on both sides and can bring balance to the whole situation. It can show kids what a good leader looks like and I always found that Rapunzel has enough compassion, understanding and integrity to make things happen that can work for almost everyone.
But it does definitely bother me the kind of stuff they illuded to in S1 with Cass just not being able to follow her true calling due to societal barriers and then later making it all about Gothel. It just irks me and makes no sense for her as a character.

Tbh I will always defend moonsandra. She had very valid reasons for having lashed out and grabbed the moonstone in that moment, and she probably could’ve been convinced a lot sooner by raps if it weren’t for zhan tiri manipulating her.
cass is my 2nd fav (after varian) i love her designs sm but her arcs were so rushed. my first watch of the show i didnt realize alot of the flaws but my 2nd rewatch i js got bored half way through s3😭 the repetiveness of cass being maniuplated by zhan tiri and thinking "raps isnt that bad" trying to fix it, zhan tiri ruining it, then back at square 1 for like the entire season, but varians sprinkle of appearences made it more bareable lol
i make gothel as part of the moon kingdom , and she neglects cass even for that gothel leaving cass becomes a hazy memory for her and she was found by captain guard and she were taken under his wings and also i would make cass opening a school for all genders and calling out on frederick's incompetent would work . also the reason why i wanted to make gothel a part of the moon kingdom is because that would convinces cass to betray rapunzel and she could take the hold of the moonstone . rapunzel learning not to be naive can be work when she spents time with cass ; cass is mature and smart individual which that would work for rapunzel to be smart and mature to rapunzel's flaw is naive and having ideas thinking that they were great , but only ended up having more problems with it .
I'm a very easy to please so I didn't notice the flaws with Cass character arc until u pointed it out

i was going to say why i liked it but it seems a lot of people beat me to it lol. Sounds really cool!
It was a good rewrite, but I will add that your rewrite is more for an older audience (PG and up, especially with the more government based theme) than a Y7 show, which is the labeling of the show. How I would rewrite to fit the original rating would be more having them be separate most of season 3 until the end, with Cass getting more powerful as the season goes on, but isolating her anger mostly to Rapunzel and Eugene, because she still cares about corona so no one else other than maybe Lance would be at risk. I would keep the episode where she disguises as the new handmaiden, but change the motive to see if Rapunzel is sorry at all for what she did. when the same result plays out as original in that episode and she sees that Corona has now sided against her, another instance over people choosing Rapunzel over her, then she would devolve into her full-on outrage. a lot would stay the same, but have Rapunzel be the one to apologize first after Zhan Tiri is summoned, without being captured for it to happen. After which, Rapunzel would be the one to defer to Cass's idea when they both have one. I still think Cass would leave to find her own path, but not before fixing the damage she caused to the castle and a short apology to Corona. I do think a late offering of a promotion of some sort would be made, but Cass would turn it down and decide she needs to get away and find something new.
Again good rewrite, but however it happens I do think Rapunzel should be the one to apologize first.
So I was inspired by your rewrite of Cass’ moonstone arc and I wanted to do one (actually two) of my own (technically it will be a rewrite/fanfic). I was wondering if I could use some of your ideas (I’ll totally cite you at the end of each chapter, in the beginning too if you’d like). I mainly wanted to use your ideas on pacing and how to do it. Pretty much everything else is different. 😊

The problem with case’s change to becoming a villain is how sudden it felt and irrational, especially after Varian’s arc was written so well cass’s just didn’t fit,

Varian was definitely a better antagonist than Cassandra but he was still a bit too... "muahaha" at parts for my liking. I don't like when an antagonist like Varian derives pleasure from hurting people. But he quite clearly grins like a psycho in certain scenes. He's supposed to be a Zuko, not an Azula. Zuko never had "fun" when he was a baddie.
And there's also the problem with Rapunzel herself. They turn her into a friend-neglecting dolt just so Varian's path to villainy could be paved. The scene where Rapunzel does nothing to stop the guards from kicking out Varian in the middle of a snowstorm even though SHE was in charge... just felt wrong. That's not the same Rapunzel that went postal after Pascal's disappearance.
I'm currently working on a revision of the show where Arianna sacrifices herself and takes the Moonstone so Rapunzel doesn't.
And then, she gets gaslighted by ZT so she has control over the Sundrop and Moonstone
And then, she gets really sick and starts having seizures

You should do an outright rewrite
The only part of your revision that bothers me is that Cassandra wasn't in Tangled Ever After, which TTS otherwise dovetails into very nicely. I do like Cass leaving for her own adventures and thus not being there for the wedding; it just needs a bit more justification.
Well; that, and I don't think your revision goes far enough. It would also help to have more involvement with the Dark Kingdom, instead of focusing everything back to the fate of Corona. Maybe instead of sidelining Edmond et al, the third season should have leaned into them more heavily, and ultimately set up Cass as having a major role _there._ I agree that having Edmond be Eugene's dad didn't hit right; and frankly, I'm with you in that I would have preferred that Eugene _not_ be turned into a bona fide Prince (cue a cut of Lone Star from Spaceballs); but without that, the Dark Kingdom is left with, well, not much. So it needs some revision to give _it_ some more gravitas.
I _do_ like that the Dark Kingdom _didn't_ turn out to be an evil empire, though; just at odds with Corona due to it having its own priorities and way of doing things. And if the Dark Kingdom's priorities and sensibilities end up aligning with Cass's goals, that could provide a way to add some scale to the conflict between Rapunzel and Cass, as she finds a new home and allies _there._ To facilitate that, the interactions between Cassandra and Adria, while starting out hostile, should gradually shift as Cass starts to see things in Adira's mindset (representative of the Dark Kingdom) that she respects and even _likes._
I also did like how the resolution of the conflict between Rapunzel and Cass took place in the series finale; but I agree that as it was written, there wasn't enough meat there to justify dragging it out across an entire season. The solution, in my opinion, is to do more with it: give Cass _more_ reasons to clash with Rapunzel than _just_ “mother liked you best”, and in turn give Rapunzel a potential challenge to face that maybe Cass may actually be better off with the Dark Kingdom and that she might have to let her go. Have _that_ be the note that Cassandra's Revenge ends on; and have the final batch of episodes feature escalating tensions between Corona and the newly resurgent Dark Kingdom, with each of the girls occasionally trying to reach out to the other for reconciliation only for matters of state to interfere. Cass is no longer angry with Rapunzel; _that_ conflict has been resolved. But it's been replaced by one where they now have conflicting obligations that keep them apart.
Again, the Dark Kingdom shouldn't be an _evil_ Kingdom; just at odds with Corona. And the series finale can end with Rapunzel and Cass finally managing to reconcile, find enough common ground between their respective Kingdoms to work together, and end the threat of what's-her-name. Then Cass goes back to the Dark Kingdom to do what's necessary to turn the tentative peace with Corona into something more lasting; and _that's_ why she doesn't have the time to show up for Rapunzel's wedding. Play it up as more of a bittersweet parting, where Cassandra is making some sacrifices of her time _now_ in order to secure a better future for everyone further down the line.

Я считаю что Кассандра- это единственный персонаж мультсериала "Рапунцель новая история", который может быть интересным и весьма продвинутым, поскольку она является самым лучшим другом Рапунцель и то, что Кесс взяла лунный камень из-под руки Репс, она просто хотела быть с Рапунцель на равных по силам. То есть, если эту ситуацию перенести в наш современный мир, то я, как и Кассандра должна была схватить что-то наподобие лунного камня и быть с кем-то на равных, например с Ириной Владимировной. Допустим, я- это Кассандра, а Ирина Владимировна- Рапунцель и мы как-то поссорились из-за того, что моя классная руководительница не посчитала моё мнение как должное и над нашими головами нависли 2 силы, разные по структуре: лунный камень и золотой цветок. И я как Кесс, взяла камень и сказала Ирине Владимировне такие слова: "Я выполняю свое предназначение" и сила лунного камня меня трансформирует в лунную Кассандру, а золотой цветок превратил саму Ирину Владимировну в Рапунцель. Ну это моё мнение о том, что Кассандра- это просто интересный персонаж из вселенной РНИ после Рапунцель, а пример, который я привела ниже своего мнения, это намёк на то, что было бы, если бы я поссорилась со своей "подругой" Ириной Владимировной и мы стали бы Кассандрой и Рапунцель
i found out eugene was king edmunds son and i hated it so much. it didnt fit his charater what so ever, in the 3d movie, the 2d movie, or the show. eugenes charater has always had to do with being a criminal on the loose who never had parents, and js out of nowhere giving him a dad was wild, also him not having parents added to his relationship with raps who has her bio parents and before that a mom(even tho she did suck). i js think the dynamic added more difference to their backgrounds esp w how they see the world, and others around them. giving eugene a dad, and a king for a dad at that, js threw eugenes (now)ex-criminal, lived poorly, and having to fight to survive life away, he grew up poor and thats how he knew life, raps lived pretty well and shes a princess, shes not poor at all. it adds more to their charater esp considering eugene never had what raps has, and giving him royalty for family js gets rid of that part of him for me😭 hes a criminal who specifically goes AGAINST the law, being a prince gets rid of that whole idea💀

I love Cass as a character but her arcs were so rushed. The whole third session was rushed - but overall I enjoyed it!

i'm rewatching tts right now, and it reminded me how much i love season 1 cass. she's one of my favourites, if not my #1 favourite character in the show. season 3 really mangled her :( i like your rewrite, feels much more true to her character (and also yahoo down with the monarchy)
I think s3 works as a stand alo e series but not as a follow up. Like its clear that s3 gad the second hald of the movie plot why s1 and 2 gad the first half

I don't dislike your rewrite, but there are somethings I think you've forgotten to consider. This is a show where the main target audience is 6-10 year old girls. That's not to say that people outside of that CAN'T or SHOULDN'T be able to enjoy it. They absolutely can, but things you've put into your rewrite like 'Gothel having a child from an affair', is not very appropriate for young kids.
It's not like 'Star VS the Forces of Evil' which was a Disney cartoon going for a bit of an older kid audience and created a whole new princess and world to experiment with political ideas. Rapunzel is up there as one of Disney's most marketable princesses and as such they're very cautious about what kind of stories she can be in. In fact I'd be willing to bet that the writers of TTS originally WANTED to take more risks but got shut down a lot from overprotective studio execs.
As a fan fic, it's cool. I personally love a story about taking down a messed up government, replacing it with egalitarian practices and I hope you don't take this criticism the wrong way. I also like these kinds of creative exercises, rewriting things. I simply wanted to point out that if your goal was to stick to the spirit of the original series, you should consider what the show's writers would be allowed to do and get away with..
I agree! The revision is well put together and solves many issues, it just simply might not be greenlit by disney.
I wish they did make it for more matured audience considering the fact that people who watched tangled as kids are teens/maybe even adults now
I think that maybe a rewrite could focus more on Cass being shown to consistently have to given up opportunity for someone else's sake and there's really few time she could actually make a choice for what to do with herself instead of just trying her best to get along with what fate have in store for her. And then Zhan Tiri would use that point to manipulate Cass. Like convincing her that Raps was the one who always outshine and get everything she want while she always have to try her best to get by and the moon stone would be her one chance to actually choose something for herself... I'm not really sure how well that idea would turn out to the end of the series but it's something in my mind
