  • Is the ZEDi10 by Allen & Heath the most affordable, multichannel mixer available? Yes. Check prices here: podhelp.me/ZEDi10BH but is it any good? In this video I find out.
    Highlights:
    The build quality is durable, not as good as a Mackie (the knobs could be better) but for the price, a nice experience and its size is small enough not to be prohibitive to travel with if necessary. It's not backpack sized but still portable enough and even seems to have a handy handle on the side for easy carrying.
    The preamps are clean all the way through the entire 60db of gain. This is 🔑. With clean preamps, we have the foundation we need to have a great audio mixer.
    The resolution of the audio meters is pretty good with an 8 LED meter that allows you to get a decent idea of where your peak level is at any given time.
    It has a power switch on back and although it seems like it's in reverse with up being off and down being on, it's a really nice feature that not all lower priced mixers have. Better than having to unplug it and plug it back in every time you want to use it.
    Standard EQ options which can be nice if you are using the mixer in a live setup.
    Each channel can be "soloed" so that it's easy to properly gain stage each channel of audio. See my video on how to do this with or without "soloing" options: • Setting Microphone Lev...
    As it pertains to podcasting, you have two auxiliary sends (aux and FX). The first is labeled aux send and it's prefader, the second is the fx send and its post-fader or in our case knob. This will allow you to create a mix-minus setup for bringing in remote guests via Skype, Hangouts, phone, while also sending the caller all the audio in your mixer except themselves. See my video on how to setup a mix-minus: • How to Setup a Mix Minus
    Here's the best way to connect a smartphone to your mixer for taking phone calls on your podcast: • Best Way to Connect a ...
    Headphone output with its own volume control. This seems like it adds a little noise at the upper levels which is disappointing because you want to hear exactly the quality of the audio that you are sending into the mixer. Just know that if you are hearing in the headphone output, it's not translating into the recording.
    You'll want to pick up a headphone amp if you have more than one person in studio which is likely why you purchased a multichannel mixer. This will provide each person who is connected to the mixer, to control his or her own audio monitoring levels. This is an affordable option: podhelp.me/HA400amazon
    4 in, 4 out 24bit/96khz USB 2.0 with true multichannel output to your DAW including bi-directional audio (audio in and out). This means you can connect up to four XLR microphones and input those mics into audio recording software such as Audition or Audacity with each channel of audio onto its own track. This allows you to edit each channel of audio, each microphone, independently in post production.
    Also very importantly, you can hear the audio you are sending into the ZEDi10 while also monitoring the audio that is coming into the mixer at the same time. Not all mixers allow for this two way (bi-directional) monitoring.
    Plug and play for Mac and iOS. You'll want to get the latest drivers if using this with Windows. You can get those here: www.allen-heath.com/ahproducts...
    Overall, as the most affordable, multichannel mixer on the market at $199 (U.S.), I was happy with this mixer's performance. I wasn't happy with how much gain the mixer requires in order to push a good signal through the USB to the computer however I was very impressed with the dynamic range of the preamps in that you can record at relatively low levels into your software (peaks around -26db) and bring up that audio to Loudness standards (-19LUFS mono), essentially raising the audio more than 20db in post and still get incredibly clean audio.

      @RayOrtega  Před 7 lety +2

      Thanks, Roman! You probably don't need a multichannel though, do you? I might lean towards another Mackie if not. Are the preamps actually going bad? A Mackie is usually a lifelong workhorse.

    • @RomanCastroVlog

      My bad, It's not the MIxer.
      For the podcast I'll run two mics in person or my mic and skype/fb call/phone call on a mix minus setup then record it all on a digital recorder via the tape output.
      It sounds clean on my headphones and on the tape output so I think it's something else.
      I'm trying to do a live broadcast setup with OBS and use my Mackie to mix all the audio outside of OBS and then just feed it in as the main audio source for the whole broadcast. I'm getting these clicks and pops in the final recording. I've isolated it down to OBS. It might be a setting in OBS or my computer maybe cant keep up. Thanks for your help! Sorry for the random tangent conversation. ;)

    'Off = Up' /'On = Down' is how all power and light rocker style switches work in Australia and as far as I recall, the UK. Reasoning being is that the OFF position typically has a red dot on the top of the rocker which can only be seen with the switch is in the 'Down = On' position. IOW: Safety.

  • @petersams5054
    @petersams5054 Před 7 lety +1

    On/Off is backwards on this mixer. Most A&H consoles use a push button switch, recessed. Build quality seems great, similar to larger GL, GS, series with each pot having a retaining nut securing it to the surface. The preamp gain is similar as well but the USB output has to be low to not allow clipping the AD converters. More expensive units use a hard limiter before the AD but hard to tell at this price point. Looks like a nice analog front end for a podcast or project studio, USB out to a channel is nice. If you need more complex look at the Behringer XR18 or X18, 18x18 usb bidirection, tablet or PC/OS controlled.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 7 lety

      Thanks, Peter. What I did find is that you can record at pretty low levels and the dynamic range of the preamp is good enough to bring up significantly in post without introducing much noise. So outside of having small waveforms while recording, it does a great job.

    @robertzebrowski5429 Před 7 lety +1

    Yes, good review! You said something I need clarification on. Regarding the PR40 and the mixer preamp....You said that by cranking the gain up on the mixers preamp could lead to mic bleed to other mics if used. Would it? I would think that it would increase the amplitude of the recorded signal but I don't see how it would increase the sensitivity of the other mics to create bleed over...(?). I might have misunderstood what you were saying.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 7 lety

      Robert Zebrowski thanks. Bringing the preamp near full is going to make the mic much more sensitive to any noise in the room. So someone sitting close is much more likely to enter your mic.

    Hi Ray, great review - thanks! Fast forward to July 2018: Can your recommend any other compact mixers, even at a higher price point, that can record multiple independent tracks? They seem to be rare birds. I was hoping to find one with built-in compression for use by my clients, who need to create audio content quickly, without technical complication. The Yamahas offer compression, but only record a single stereo track. Being able to record multiple tracks is more important. Thoughts?

I'm a little torn between the two, at about the same price point, but the Zedi seems to have a better USB connection (though some people online have had trouble with the Windows 10 drivers?).

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 7 lety +1

      +Michael Neal when it comes to Windows and drivers I don't have any experience so the reviews you see should definitely play a role if that is your setup. I think the main difference here besides the drivers, is multichannel. Either you need it or don't. That will make a lot of the decision. The Mackie will have a better build quality but probably performs about the same with multichannel.

    For skype: Use a microphone that is a bit more sensitive. You should be able to have enough gain for the mike to clip. Then just turn gain slightly down, and you are good to go.

    Hello Ray,
    Thank you for the informative review.
    I have a problem playing music from my new 15” MacBookPro through the USBC TO USBB cord and getting sound on my new ZEDi 10.

      I'm not sure of the issue, I think maybe the USB is attenuated but the good news is that in the end the audio is fine. Do your normalizing in post and you're set. That said, if you're live streaming it may be a bigger problem.

  • @jaro0515

    Hello, I would like to ask whether it is OK to use this mixer or ZEDi8 to record guitar on the computer or better will be to use interface like Focusrite or Presonus? Before, I saw your review of Beringer Q802USB but there was problem to monitor in and out signal at the same time. So, I wanted to buy usb interface like Presonus audiobox usb96, but after seeing this video I think this mixer or ZEDi8 ( I think it is simmilar) can be also good to record instrument on the computer. Also, as you said, it is possible to record up to four instruments with this mixer as separate waves at the same so this could be good for small band...

      "4 in, 4 out 24bit/96khz USB 2.0 with true multichannel output to your DAW including bi-directional audio (audio in and out). This means you can connect up to four XLR microphones and input those mics into audio recording software such as Audition or Audacity with each channel of audio onto its own track. This allows you to edit each channel of audio, each microphone, independently in post production."
      This is description but is it works this way? I heard USB mixer can record only stereo signal so only 2 channels... Anyone can advise?

    Thanks you, great video. I'm using the identical zedi10fx, usb to macbook pro, Logic x, for some strange reason the Mic 1 is the only physical input that will deliver a signal to Logic. I've solved a million things like this over the decades, do you supposed there's a setting I've overlooked. I've tried all combinations of usb output allocation, I've put in test proven cables. Have you ever heard of that? I worry it's an actual hardware problem, but so often a close look reveals it's really the user. Thank you for the video, any thoughts?

      Usually to get multichannel into your software, the setting you need to change is in the software itself. Perhaps also on your computer's audio settings and maybe even updating drivers if required.

    Can I record everithing or is it just a multichannel mixer? For example, I want to stream with two mic´s the auxiliar inputs (l & r) and also stream the fx asigned to any particular channel... It means I´ll need to record or stream basically all the channels, but I dont know if I require an external soundcard to plug into master outputs. I don´t really need separated channels, just need to record the master channel.

  • @Zac-Hansen

    Ray, thank you again for another great video. I purchased this mixer because of your review and my recording needs. Currently, I am recording a podcast with Audacity. I have installed the ZEDi10 on my computer with the latest drivers. However, it is not recording multiple tracks out of the box. You showed that you do this in the video.
    Do you have a guide on how to setup multi-track recording some where?
    A side note, I use the ATR-2100 mic and I have the same issue with the gain. I think its the mic. I used a Behringer Q1204USB before and I have the same issue with the gain on that board and that mic. I was hoping that problem was going to be fixed. All that said, so far, I think the sound quality is tighter/smoother with the ZEDi10.
    That will not make a difference if I cant get it to work with audacity properly. With the proper drivers installed it is only recording in mono. =/
    Thanks Ray

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Před 6 lety +1

      It could be a setting on your computer but not sure with Windows. You should try another piece of software to see if you can get it to work so you'll know more about where the problem is. I think you can download and try Reaper for free and if you try it and it works you probably won't go back;)
      As for the ATR, all dynamic mics need lots of gain. You have to be really close and you need to give them most of the gain the mixer has but make sure you watch my gain staging video and instructions for podcasters thepodcastersstudio.com/gainstaging

Quick q regarding multuchannel OUT into Mac for recording into a DAW: It is labeled as 4 USB out, does this mean from the 10 channels , you can only send up to 4 channels out through USB? so if i have a 1) guitar, 2) bass, 3) microkorg synth, 4) MIC 1, 5) MIC 2, 6) drum machine, - i would have to chose 4 of them to go into my DAW as individual channels? For me, I don't need em. Often because the FX are not something I'd use. If there is a compressor, maybe but that tends to be outside of the FX and most mixers have at least a basic EQ. But reverb and all that, I wouldn't use it.

      I think so. That's more of a music application so I didn't test it but I think it can do overdubbing which if it does, I don't think it should send the incoming audio back into the recording. Look up this mixer here on youtube with the words overdubbing and see if anyone has tested it. Thanks!

    If you were live streaming, and had a skype caller, could you not: Patch AUX OUT to M1 LINE. Use M2, M3, M4 for studio mics. Turn off ST2 to AUX. Turn off M1 to AUX and turn off M1 to MIX. This would give M1 a mix minus the skype caller on ST2, and skype uses M1 as its default input. Your podcast would be streamed from Main Mix by pressing the M1 - M2 - L - R button. I don't have this mixer to try this on, would this work?
