Terrifying 25: North Slide to Tripyramids, Whiteface & Passaconaway!

  • We met up with our friend Ryan to climb the North Slide to North Tripyramid, Middle Tripyramid and we traversed over to Whiteface and Passconaway finishing 4 new New Hampshire 48 high peaks! Ryan left his car at the end point so this traverse was possible. Otherwise I think it was about 10 miles in between trail heads and it was all uphill! North slide was probably one of my favorite ascents up any mountain. From the bottom of the slide you are at about 2400 feet of elevation. And then you climb up to about 4180 feet in a 1 mile stretch. In this stretch you climb 1200 feet in a single half mile. It’s pretty amazing and it’s extremely exhilarating and rewarding and it’s literally a real life playground. Make sure you have some energy in you because it burns up a lot of energy! The views from the slides were just breathtaking. Once you get to the top of the slide you enter the woods and have another quarter mile to the summit. The summit is mostly wooded with a small viewpoint. The trail over to middle and south Tripyramid are very mild and smooth terrain that you could move quick on if you wanted. Getting off South Tripyramid you go down very steep terrain. I believe it’s a section of south slide which is also on the terrifying 25. You go down a little bit and then you go left and go over The Sleepers. The terrain from the Sleepers over to Whiteface doesn’t look traveled often. A lot of overgrown grass and weeds covering the trail but the terrain is extremely smooth throughout the entire day and not many rocks. It was almost therapeutic for my feet! Whiteface has gorgeous views and beautiful Summit rock to sit on. You’re on a beautiful ridge walking over towards Passconaway with views to the right hand side! When you finally get near Passconaway The last quarter mile or so is pretty much straight up. Lots of rocks and scrambles. There are several lookout points on the summit and they are well worth checking out. The true summit is a little Carin on the top center of the mountain in the woods it’s like 100 feet off the main trail so make sure you don’t miss that little spur! Coming down and back to the car was insane steep for the 1st mile but then levels out and becomes extremely easy to walk on at an extremely fast pace if needed!

      Gary Harnish Hey Gary! I am on my third round of the 46 now but I have left the area due to overcrowding for the moment till things settle back to normal. I love all of the trails going up dix.. if you ever get a chance to browse the channel i got lots of good Adirondack content. I just completed a single season winter 46 in one month this winter! Is the specific trail you’re talking about the Beckhorn trail?

    I hiked Passaconaway through the Blueberry Ledges Trail up Mt Whiteface, around the bowl and down Dicey's mill trail last fall for the first time. I remember we tried it in 2017 but the kids were younger it was a hot fall and we didn't have enough water. We gave up before the final scale up to Whiteface due to insuffucient water and we weren't in good enough shape. Tried again in April 2020 but failed again due to ice and being with a family with a bit younger child. Finally completed the hike last fall with my younger son who is very fit and strong but we worked on our physique the last couple years pretty intensely now that kids are older. Passaconaway from Ferncroft was the most challenging physical feat I ever did in my life. Been training all winter of course but glad to be looking forward to this next challenge it looks like it will be more difficult. Am looking to do this hike in a couple weeks hoping the ice will melt. Keeping an eye on the alltrails reviews for people to stop mentioning snow & ice.
    Thanks for the video, incredible! Looks like a VERY challenging hike.

    Great video. Years ago, my buddy and I went up the south peak, over to the middle, then down the north peak. Bad move. Additionally, we missed the trail and wound up going directly down the sheer slide. Luckily, we made it down ok, though at one point, I kicked up a rock that almost killed my friend. I still have bad dreams.

    Where exactly did you access the Livermore Trail? Livermore Trail is an old logging road, but it looks like you guys entered it somewhere else? Very cool approach to the usual route most people take to get to the North Tripyramid Slide

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  Před 4 lety +2

      Cla Plum Yeah when I was talking to someone who lives in the area he told me if I took that specific Livermore trail in that almost no one uses it anymore. It was so beautiful and I’m so glad we did it. I believe there’s more than one Livermore trail and this is the one that most people don’t use. At one point we did enter a logging road for about a quarter mile if I remember correctly

      Definitely easier to stay on course and track one goal. Take the T25 as they come up. My buddy and I were supposed to do the extended Pemi loop over this past weekend. 2 nights and 3 days. He pulled/blew out his calf less than 2 miles in and couldn’t continue. We were literally .5mi up Osseo heading to Flume. Didn’t get any peaks that day. Real bummer.

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  Před 4 lety

      I say no currently but I’ve also learned to never say no because one of the funnest things about all these different mountains is constantly having somewhere new to see and explore. That’s kind of getting really far away from home and becoming a hassle at that point. Right now I feel as if the 48 and New Hampshire is going to be my limit for travel but who the heck knows I’m pretty sure I could take a weeks vacation each year and just bang out the other ones

      Dallas DeVries My knees are flawless and they just get in the way IMO especially like you just mentioned for vlogging. I personally like to put the stress and fatigue on my leg muscles since I’m very into fitness. I like to work harder to make my legs stronger. I have kind of always been that way with hiking. I like to minimize things that help me and try to be able to hike these things as naturally as possible! Although in the winter I hike with trekking poles on every winter hike because they dramatically help breaking trail up mountains!

    You definitely capture the scenery very well...gorgeous. Serious question though, I was wondering where were your masks? It looked like you'd encountered a number of people especially on summits. Or was this pre-Covid?

    • @BrianHikesAllDay
      @BrianHikesAllDay  Před 4 lety +2

      My choice is to not wear a mask when I’m out hiking. If someone else is wearing a mask I will gladly step aside and give them their distancing. But most of the people I encountered on trail are just out having a good time without a mask. The chances of getting Covid out hiking are pretty much zero.

    • @dyeany2
      @dyeany2 Před 4 lety

      @@BrianHikesAllDay I appreciate your honesty. I will say that this choicd contradicts guidance from major outdoor and hiking organizations. I also see any content-producers/influencers as having a responsibility to promote solid outdoor ethics and Leave No Trace principles. LNT has even integrated guidance for Covid-19 into their 7 principles, including mask-wearing: lnt.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Covid-19-Social-update6-15-partners-small.pdf.
      And organizations like the ADK Mountain Club have also been promoting the use of masks while hiking since mid-May, specifically when encountering others: www.adk.org/hiking-during-coronavirus/.
      The least impact one can have is to don a mask when near or passing by others on trail, rather than stepping off the hardened trail surface onto vegetation.
      One final thought, when you see someone wearing a mask, that person is mostly wearing it to protect you. I agree outdoor risk of transmission is low, but it's the very least we can do for our fellow person.
      I enjoy your videos and hope you continue to have success climbing in the Northeast.
