Many of you may know this already, but "skelton" (スケルトン) from English "skeleton" was a fad in Japan in the 1990s for the plastic cases of electronic devices to be made of transparent plastic.
Nope. I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info.
Ah, technology of the late 90s and early 2000s. When all you needed to make something look high-tech was to let people see the PCB, and your lack luster wiring job.
I love that style honestly. I'd throw a lot of money at something that's completely translucent with decent sound quality, maybe even have the PCB be semi-translucent. Then throw LEDS at it.
Must be where the Japanese skeleton xbox came from
So is that why Nintendo went through a phase of everything being "Atomic Purple"? (e.g. the transparent purple Game Boys, the transparent green N64s, the stock GBA color being transparent blue)
"For ages 3 & a half. Not includes Tom Cruise."
Got a good laugh out of that.
"If the GP3 really is a cult classic, then it's another reminder of why you should avoid cults."
Literally read this at the exact moment he said that line, so doubly funny 😂
Classic Techmoan wisdom. The moments we live for.
Cool, a dedicated vaporwave and nightcore mixing knob
too bad that feature isn't why this is so overpriced; audio hipster tools fanboying over mediocre shit as usual.
Dale Gribble both genres i mentioned are garbage
chopped and screwed edition
@@Willwantstobeawesome better mail one to Paul Wall ;p
Techmona always reveals his inner gangster when its time to put some records spinning
Techmona, his drag queen persona name?
@@_DeadEnd_ the overlap would probably surprise you
"THE SOUND OF MY VOICE SHOULD BE MAKING YOU FEEL RELAXED! SIT BACK & ENJOY THE TINGLY SENSATION!!!!"
This had me in tears. 🤣
Come for the record player... stay for the ASMR parody.
It's one of my most favorite Techmoan puppet videos. I wish he would put these on some media format & sell them, because I would so buy it.
Cornelius is a well known Japanese musician who's into experimental music. He named himself after the character in Planet of the Apes. He composed the soundtrack to the latest Ghost in the Shell series, 'Arise'.
To be fair, that is the best sounding mono I've ever heard out of a plastic toy record player.
Though I feel that may have more to do with whatever black magic rituals Techmoan uses to make CZcams audio not sound like total garbage.
"Like taking a chainsaw to a music shop" - I'll have to remember that one... :D
great quote
I'm always pleasantly surprised at your knowledge and taste in American Hip-Hop. And me being a former DJ of 20+ years, it's also cool to me that you know about the SL-1200s and beat matching. You're a lot more hip and cool than you let on to be! lol
Best muppets! Gave me a migraine too! (Almost) 😂
Let’s see if Santa can bring you some new vinyl and minidiscs this year for testin’! 🎅🏼
I'll keep my eye on the chimney/letterbox.
You have a combined chimney/letterbox? That is convenient for getting rid of spam mail I guess. ;)
Anders Enger Jensen Sooo... Could you smell the toast?
Where can I contact you if I want to send you records you can play without copyright issues?
Anders Enger Jensen vinyls**
Cornelius is a great musician, I'm a very big fan of him.
Your vacuum cleaner has a record coming out next week.
I love Merzbow and Masonna! 🍄
MSBR and Aube (RIP)
@Vax Buster - I wouldn't call a warped flexi-disc high fidelity audio.
@@VAX1970 CZcams it, buddy. Cornelius is great!
I haven't seen a more ridiculous Japanese to English blurb on a box since the late 90s.
Edit: Apparently it really came out in the 90s, now it makes perfect sense.
It also looked like a cereal box the way it's designed.
Homer: Why am I on a Japanese box?
Bart: There's your answer, Mister Fish-Bulb!
It's on purpose. It's not mistakes. They are making jokes/puns.
"if the gp3 is a cult classic, then it's another reminder of why you should avoid cults" love this line lmao
this is quality rubbish
It finally happened! You revieved my very first childhood record player! I've been trying to figure out the exact make and model of this thing for years, and you finally just dropped it on my lap. Thanks, techmoan!
It was one of the only record players (not turntables, but record players) you could buy, when records were written off by most of society. It's also made in Japan. I bought one perhaps ten years ago, and am happy I did, despite its shortcomings.
Great video that box is hilarious! Loved the puppet sketch too! 😂
Techmoan, you *never* fail us - simply *the* most interesting and entertaining tech on all of CZcams and within this very video the funniest muppet sketch yet. Chuffing brilliant! Hilarious! Keep going with this stuff for ever and don't change a thing.
Tears of laughter at the end of the video! These bits are only getting better and better. Perfect timing, perfect jokes. Love it! Oh and the reviews as well. Great job.
"Let listen to the slip disk" then let's never listen to it again
Great video! I am very glad to have purchased a couple Columbia GP-3 models myself despite the flaws they have. They are among one of my first collections, so you can imagine how empty my wallet is.
Had the opportunity to see Cornelius in Portland, OR earlier this year. It was super amazing! This review really made my day. I want this model for Cornelius alone! Keep up the great content!
Honestly, I love the model featured in the video. The way the box is set up and the clear plastic really appeals to me! Yet another great video!
A lot better than my old show and tell phonograph I had as a kid in early 70s, I didn't need anything better at that age😁
That thing reminds me of the cheap as chips turntable we had to play with as kids, 40-odd years ago
Every time I see those puppets in a new video, makes my day better. I learn something about retro tech from the regular video, and get a good dose of fun to finish! Thankyou! :)
That's your funniest puppet out-tro yet! Keep 'em coming!!
don't know what ASMR is supposed to be but that was hilarious.
TOP DEFINITION
ASMR
An acronym for “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.”
The sole purpose of ASMR is to relax people. The ASMR community is constantly growing on CZcams. Ideally, ASMR videos are meant to give the viewer a relaxing tingle at the back of their head and/or spine. ASMR videos usually involve one or more of the following things:
• Gentle whispering
• Relaxing hand movements
• Smacking of the lips
• Nail tapping/scratching on hard surfaces such as tables
• Brushing sounds
• Etc.
---------------------------
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. A feeling that is produced when listening to certain sounds and/or looking at certain visuals. The majority of people who experience ASMR don't mention it to their peers. I can almost guarantee that, you, reading this paragraph, has not mentioned ASMR to anyone you know. Most likely because you think they will think you're weird. We all feel the same way!
* The above is from the Urban Dictionary*
For my own part, I just find it annoying because I can't understand what they're saying.
@ganymedeIV4 I very much get a strong relaxing effect from specific ASMR videos that usually need to be unintentional. I, Like many others watched unboxing videos before ASMR videos starting popping up some +5 years ago to relax. Though, like with everything in the internet where there is money to be made there has risen these ASMR videos that don't seem to have anything to do with relaxing.
Tibetan signing bowls or whale sounds do absolutely nothing to me.
I really hope this is a joke. "watching selfies all day" - lol, seriously?
@@tissot233 +1
I feel so relaxed now😂 on a side note I really like the style of that turntable package, but then I am a sucker for transparent things for some odd reason
Yeah me too; I find electronic devices in transparent cases quite sexy.
You guys need to search for old Tube prison tv's! They use clear plastic. I own 3 of them and use them on my old computers.
Commodore Sixfour
Ahh I see... clear plastic to prevent inmates from hiding stuff inside the TV.
My guess is that they are specific to the USA, though; at least I have never heard of them here in Europe.
@@BertGrink There are LCD ones now, but they are made cheaper than the CRT ones.
Commodore Sixfour Yes I saw a selection of both types when I googled them. I'm a little miffed though, because it seems they only exist in America and not here in Europe, thus making it infeasible for me to attempt to acquire one - NTSC vs PAL as well as mains power differences.
Who else checks the end for the puppets when they first open a Techmoan video? A *GREAT* one today!
Another delightful video to brighten my morning, thanks, Mat!
Oh, BTW, I loved the outro. "Can you smell burnt toast?" Too funny.
Thanks for this review. I enjoyed it immensely. That box was classic. You could do a review on the box alone.
The puppet outtro made me check my phone thinking I had a notification from ebay... Damn you Techmoan! You got me again.
That box was hilarious! As always your video has made my day. Thank you :)
Fart fun! But not in stereo... :(
yeah! well it was sadly in mono :-/ bummer.
Mono farting....@@josephfrye7342
Farts are indeed mono
@@vitovtwik Unless he....ripped himself a new one.
Well you only fart in mono so that bit was dead accurate.
That was the best puppet sketch yet.
entertaining and informative - as always.
your videos are top-drawer.
6:44
wow - an actual PITCH (RPM) control -
as opposed to a mere TONE (frequency response) control).
i MUST order one right away !
The ASMR video at the end though. I dearly love ASMR but it takes itself so seriously sometimes that this was begging to be done. Perfection!
You mentioned FISHER PRICE. I had one of those record players (the one with the yellow/orange platter and tone arm) as a kid. I seem to recall that it could BEAT THE CRAP out of this thing. But perhaps it's all in my mind. If ONLY there was someone who could make a video showcasing it! ~ *wink wink, nudge nudge... lightly pokes TECHMOAN with a stick* ~
Funnily enough...
I had a sesame street one that played plastic 45s 🤣 also I think that same Fisher Price one with old children's story audio books with the book to read along with. I specifically remember 20,000 Leagues, woule have been around '94
That was my first record playe. I'd crank it up in my crib.. I had a special edition of The Wall for the Fisher Price. It was 2000 separate records .madness
Had the Fisher Price one waaayyy back in the 70's when I was a tiny kid. It did indeed beat the crap out of this.
Holy... What a crossover!
Ha thought I got an eBay notification
You've been outbid.
You got me with that eBay notification at the end. I actually had to check my phone. I love the puppets!
That muppet bit was on point. Great work as always. The rest of the video was also on point. Great work as always.
Jackie Brown OST on vinyl, nice pick. That is one of my favorites. Thanks for making great videos on weird audio.
Great video, Mat. The muppets too. :)
Just can't beat a good techmoan video amazing as always
Truly soothing MSAR. I'm going to put that on repeat when I go to bed tonight.
Remember kids, don't follow cults, don't do drugs, eat your teeth
And brush your vegetables.
Mmm, good teeth.
Stay in Milk, Eat your drugs.
Bizarro Superman don't approve this message!
Don't do that, your teeth will go grey!
Is that the Jackie Brown soundtrack?
I'm glad you updated the muppets intro screen with a correct description! Thanks for the laugh :)
I always get disapponted when I don't see the muppets at the end of an episode! Makes me glad they're back again! Love your work! Turntable, muppets and all!
Holy cow! That's a novelty if ever I saw one. Back in the 90's I was in college and remember some "hip" skater shops and record shops with what could well have been these playing the latest David Holmes or whatever. Very, very similar to a fisher price sound. Proper plastic tat! Btw, ASMR is HUGE on CZcams. Just puts me to sleep. Nothing more. However, your skit was 😆 so damn funny. :-).
Sometimes, putting myself to sleep is the entire point of my listening to ASMR; it's great for that. Otherwise, I use it for relaxation when I'm working on something.
6:45 Instant vaporwave
It was honestly soundin pretty good too... Time to spend $150 lmao.
I legit liked how that sounded what is wrong with me
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 I dunno, modern songs can make some good vaporwave, they just have to have the right sound. Pretty much any Gorillaz song is amazing vaporwave'd IMO.
Turn a knob and suddenly
a e s t h e t i c s
h a p p e n
You gotta run it into a shitty reverb pedal in order to get the full vaporwave effect tho
Your Muppet sketches are the best. This one had me in tears at the end because I was laughing hysterically.
This was released on my 27th birthday hehe. Brilliant video as always
LONG LIVE TECHMOAN!!!!!!
Oh, you have the same name as he does!
Also, I totally agree.
No wonder this got hyped, it's a japanese retro electronic with built-in vaporwave maker. only thing missing is Pepsi branding on the unit itself
That has to be the best puppet skit you've ever done. that was amazing
Excellent review. Now I'm not in a hurry to get one of these.
This Cornelius record player feels like a parody..
It's almost like the Japanese have a sense of humor or something... Nah, must be 100% serious, like CZcams comments.
My ASMR channels are BigClive, John Ward, Shango066, and vwestlife.
Techmoan is 100% attention inducing feeling videos AIFV.
I had one of these which I gave away as a x-mass present many years ago. Nice, fun and all but it carves new grooves in your records lol
Another awesome video, and I haven't heard Bobby Womack's Across 110th Street tune in awhile! Loved the original film from the 70s.
ASMR for the hard-of-hearing ... i love it lol
It somehow-ow-ow reminded-ded-ded me of Bart Simpson-son-on-on stacking about fourteen megaphones-ones-ones in a row-ow-ow.
Now why-hy-hy do I keep hearing echoes-oes-oes?
The delightful puppets totally made my day!
I hope that Mat will release a DVD with all the episodes, once there are enough to fill an entire disc.
As far as I understood whole topic - nobody force you to watch Bob ross. What is this hussle all about?
Such pleasing sounds!
this screems for a proper kickstarter campaign - bringing a good portable turntable to life
The Jacky Brown OST is simply beautiful! Good Pick (although it deserves a better player) :)
Any chance of you reviewing a portable hand winded grammophone.
Love crazy box stuff. I thought that mat looked like a record. Cool idea.
Great puppet sketch. 😀
Since the tonearm has a spring loaded mechanism instead of a counterweight, the measured tracking force will be higher if you put the scale on top of the record. The scale has to be exactly as high as a record would be to give precise results with these tonearms.
Yess for Bobby Womack!
It's a shame Sony or AudioTechnica haven't done reissues of the Flamingo or Sound Burger. With the only alternative being that god-awful Crosley Revolution, and used machines even in broken condition going for crazy amounts you'd think it'd be worth it for even a limited run. I'd love a Flamingo but I'm not paying thousands of dollars for one.
Nukleon
Absolutely they probably still have the tooling and manufacturing equipment to make this too. Usually companies keep unusual things like this! I think it would sell VERY well.
Another great outro! Made me laugh out loud!
ASMR for the hard of hearing! I'm laughing so hard right now! 🤣 Thank you Techmoan!
9:54 - "Now, if the GP3 really is a cult-classic, then it's another reminder of why you should avoid cults." LMAO
Love these outros... Keep em coming and flippin 'eck to the haters!
The notes during the outro sequence were a great idea in my opinion.
Although I'm not here for the muppets, this one had me. :D
Props for the sketch, very amusing!
Another def jam ☺ Thanks for great vid as always
So that’s just an instant vapor wave machine!
I love the box it came in :D.
Also, I love how the speed measuring app shows how hard 30FPS fails xD, it was just blurryness galore.
You should try 60FPS when you have to film relatively fast moving objects.
That turntable just looks cool, 90's see-through plastic needs to make a return!
What on earth have you led me to!! I watched the muppets section and then had to go and find out what ASMR was - baffling! I must be easily led! :)
I tried listening to ASMR but all I got was fart fun.
Now I must go watch Jackie Brown!
That was probably one of the best puppet segments yet!
That was a fun video. Great puppet segment.
Always love to see the Moans.
You can't beat proper Japanese English! It has this inimitable quality that is entirely its own
Walter Heukels
Allow me to introduce you to www.engrish.com
You can’t fake it either!
It reminds me of my first record player which I got for my birthday back in 1959. The only record I was given was "Little Brown Jug" which did not really appeal to me and only lasted a couple of weeks, so I asked my mother to buy a brand Summer County margarine which offered a free copy of a Jazz Flexi disc by Humphrey littleton. It was called "Swinging on the Gate"
It was many years before I could afford a better record player.
I think I have told you that I worked in the Hi Fi trade in London.
My favourite compact record player is my Technics SL7 which you can play vertically if you want to because it is a linear tracking deck, and Hi Fi
Many thanks for digging up another Gem.
Jeremy Travis Teletape London.
pleasant surprise to see cornelius randomly in ur vid!
also surprised there was a portable turntable hyped after him.. didnt think he was that big in the hype over in japan :0
I'm surprised that a site like Turntable Lab would try and hype up this cheap novelty/toy record player....
kind of sad really :/
The box alone was worth that price :D :D :D
I have never been more frightened than when I saw the needle hack into the flexidisc. That was the most frantic thing I’ve ever had the pleasure to see.
That last bit of ASMR for the hard of hearing, sounded like a composition from Ross Geller ... My ears are now melted.
Good-Lord! A Fischer-Price phonograph would look high-end compared to that pile of rubbish. And a 8g tone-arm tracking weight? The tone-arm of Panasonic SGJ-500 from the "Triple Take" series has only 5.9g! Speaking of which, perhaps one of those is what you should review next... or one of the JVC equivalents.
6:46 vaporwave af
They stopped making portable record players like this one in the US back in the mid-70's. Still can't believe they were still being made in Japan up to the year 2000.
As a kid I had a cheap record player, I had records that dinged when I needed to turn a page in a book. Twas the night before christmas was fun to listen to.
