    "It's almost as though someone with a very vague memory of the Sound Burger from their childhood had rung up a factory to try and get it manufactured again and tried to describe it to them over the phone but unfortunately the two people spoke different languages and the phone line was very crackly, but the factory decided to press on anyway despite the fact the first chap had got the wrong number and actually rung up a factory that only ever made shoes before."

    Actually, interesting story about my Sound Burger. When it was given to me, I thought I should change the stylus. So I took it to the only shop where I lived that I felt could sell me what I needed. I felt I had to be really apologetic because, as you said in your video, it looks like a toy. The shop sold high end HiFi equipment. I had been in there before to buy other things, but you got the feeling that the guys running the shop were capable of being very dismissing about anything that didn’t reach their standards. So I said something like “really sorry to bring this in, but I’d like stylus so I can try it out”. Their reaction was overwhelmingly positive. They told me that it was made by a company that was very well known for its turntables, and in fact it was very good in its own right. They even thanked me for brining it in as they had never seen one in the wild before. They sold me a stylus, and it did indeed work, but as I said in my other post, the pots are knackered. So I put it away. One day, I told myself, I’ll get it working properly again. I feel that I really should now.
    So, thanks for posting the links for the drive belts - mine needs a new set as well. I may have to get it a new stylus too, just to be sure - no rubber support with mine, so the stylus has been resting on the turntable for a very long time.

I first installed the lower one.. and ofcourse it played to fast, so i replaced it with the higher one, so now it's playing at the right speed.

    • @MrWombatty
      @MrWombatty Před 6 lety +8

      Georg;
      Electronic components like resistors & capacitors can change their values over long periods of time especially if they're low quality to start with & exposed to significant heat from high ambient temperatures & higher current than expected. The coloured bands on resistors not only signify the resistance value but also the last band indicates how closely it's been manufactured to meet that value (+/-%), so if a circuit uses cheaper components to start with then it might not ddo precisely what it's designed to do even from the factory!

    • @michaeltempsch5282
      @michaeltempsch5282 Před 6 lety +5

      Trim potentiometers aren't usually high precision, so if you need to set a value close to the upper end of the nominal value of the pot, with a bit of bad luck, the actual max value of the pot could be lower...
      More careful overall circuit design could probably have dealt with it, or it might be an issue of the tolerances of multiple other components coming together in just such a way that for this unit the range of the pot just doesn't do it...

      I have a Victrola record player from 1913 and it has an adjustable speed regulator on it. It's very unlikely that this player had no regulation 70 years later, because high-impedance potentiometers were used to control speed and those wouldn't allow for much power to go through. This means they were almost certainly controlling some kind of voltage regulator.
      By the way, you can see how the mechanical speed regulator works in this video by Technology Connections: czcams.com/video/0vbyoZDQaIY/video.htmlm34s

      Yeah, I had to check as I have one too and didn't think that looked right (aside from the misspellings.) Mine has a clear bit above the label area and is a shiny red, not that matte olive this looks like. For what it's worth, it also has an FM transmitter with two frequencies to select from, but that never worked so well as FCC rules require it to be so low output as to be worthless. Incidentally, mine was dead for a while and when I plugged it in today, has decided to work again for some reason. Wouldn't recommend seeking this one out, but I used a bunch of in-store credit to get mine, so it is what it is.

    I had the original Mister disc in Purpke in mint shape that I won on eBay around 2010 for under $100. I was the only bidder and back in 2010, not many even knew about this machine and the vinyl craze had not happened yet. Sadly it got stolen about 6 years ago from my storage and I loved that thing, even just looking at it and not using for it. I’m very visual and love the 70’s and 80’s and for me ot was like looking at art and made me feel how I felt in the 70’s and 80’s,
    So I was so happy to find out these are back bc I don’t have the budget to get another original bc they’ve gone up 4 to 5 times what I paid 13 years ago. I actually was pricing some audio technica cartridges when this burger unit came in the feed with the cartridges. So I’m def getting one and I love all the vintage Japanese gadgets from the 70’s and 80’s. I need to find a book with all of the vintage Japanese gadgets, so I can just look at them and be more educated on what was out back then.

      You’re kidding right? Crosley products are almost wholely responsible for the ‘vinyl revival’. They make cheap turntables that are aesthetically pleasing, and like a girl meets a boy, the first thing that matters is if she likes how he looks. People start with cruisers, get a taste for it then dump that for something better once they realize they can do better. Audiophiles might shit on Crosley but without them the communities wouldn’t be what they are now

    Really cool! When I was a young stud cruising the mean streets of our little village, my cousin was looking for a way to play the music we wanted to hear as we drove around. Well he did find a battery operated record player, and we put that in the front seat between us in his 1955 Mercury, and we cruised. Only problem, the streets were rough and that Merc was a smooth ride, but not smooth enough for a record player. We gave up after two nights of ah shits. Ten years later I bought my first in car cassette player, I ordered it from the PACEX catalog while I was in Vietnam, and it was waiting for me when I got home but that's a whole different story.

      I don't understand why anyone would make a fake of a Crosley. My sister's Crosley cruiser has the same weird tonearm, like the arm is at a weird angle, so I wouldn't be surprised. Plus all the cheap turntables have the same mechanism meaning they come from the same factory, so I can't see why it would be bad unless this was a bad batch or a one-off.

    I bought a Crosley revolution for my girlfriend a few months ago. It's very different to the model shown here. Didn't come with earbuds, the batteries went in fine, no weird label-maker labels, no hum or other audio issues, much better tracking, consistent speed, the switches all in different places, and generally just looking a bit nicer and sturdier than the one in the video; most importantly the spindle does rotate. The only record player I've seen with a stationary spindle (it's a terrible design; you have to grease the spindle to get any semblance of 33rpm) is the ridiculously bad knockoff Crosley portable that I bought the revolution to replaceme. I think you got a knock-off Mr. Moan.
