I’m an American who lived in India for many years. Love the place, particularly the people and food. I really wish though they’d develop a sense of hygiene. Those open sewers, trash everywhere- used to be that way 20 years ago, probably was for a lot longer. Don’t people feel the need to improve themselves and develop their villages and towns?

We all need to maintain a certain sense of hygiene to avoid unnecessary diseases, and in turn also eventually spreading those diseases.
But this is also true that not every village in India is equal in terms of hygiene.
You will be surprised to know that there are many villages in India who voluntarily maintain a very good sense of hygiene without any intervention of the law(,even better than urban areas in some cases). Others still need to learn this...
While in urban areas people nowadays maintain much more hygiene than they used to 20 years back.
So, things change eventually for better.

That big salt in saloon is called potash alum. The pan leaves are called beetel leaves. And if it's a sweet pan, you can actually swallow it. It's good for digestion.
