- Movie Class by PizzaFLIX: The film LIFE WITH FATHER (1947) was adapted from the 1939 Broadway play, which was based on Clarence Day's autobiographical stories about his family and father, a governor on the New York Stock Exchange. The Broadway production ran for 3,224 performances and still holds the record as the longest-running non-musical play in Broadway history.
Stars: William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor
Director: Michael Curtiz
In late 19th-century NYC, a stockbroker strives to maintain authority over his bustling household, but it's his wife who truly rules the roost.
TRIVIA: Since both leads demanded top billing, half of the released prints billed Dunne first and the other half listed Powell first. First-run theaters were required to these alternate prints and advertising alternated the same way. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Love this movie!! Older movies are often better than some of these newer ones. Thanks for letting us enjoy them!!!
Vicki Buchanan me too, can see it over & over again ❤️ Love Irene Dunne
@@francinebarr1204 Me too! Absolutely LOVE Irene Dunne in anything she has done!
I find that old movies are better then most of today's movies there doesn't seem to be any heart in today's movie and not a compelling story line as there was in these oldies....I search for these type of movies these days thank you for sharing with all of us...

What a gem. What an absolute gem! Who needs Netflix when there are movies like this in the archives. That's the beauty of CZcams
I agree. But they need to allow more movies.
AGREED FULLY..WATCH IT REGULARLY. So beautifully acted, creative touches, comforting, delightful movie
Yes, I agree!! Drains my batteries though.
😌💯
I just love both William Powell and Irene Dunne💜 I am 67 but grew up watching these old movies and they are still my favorites.
Hello 👋how are you doing?
This is a favorite in our family! I love William Powell in this and Irene Dunne- and Elizabeth Taylor was adorable too. Wholesome classic!
I get so sad when the ending comes because I don't want the movie to be over
Hello 👋how are you doing?
I haven't seen this treasure in a long time. It's a great way to relax and forget the chaos of our present world. The cast is perfect.
More so now😢
What a wonderful movie!!! No profane words,no sexual content,no revealing vulgar dress on women, no bombs or explosions, and so much more. Fast forward 2022. Celebrities/actors have become gods,to be admired, worshipped, copied. Forget about christian values and morales demonstrated in this movie. No way. We've come a long way in America. In God We Trust, printed on our money. Wonder how much longer before its completely removed from USA currency?!?! God has been removed from everything else. Thank you for taking the time downloading what use to be. Refreshing, very enjoyable. If only we could see leaving God out of our country will bring consequences of untold horror.
You wrote this right around the pandemic. Crazy to think it’s been about 3 years.
I felt every minute of it. Total insanity.
The casting in this movie is absolutely spot on! Kudos to whoever is responsible. I watch this over and over and I always notice a little something different to make me smile..love it!
How can you dislike a film starring such talented, sophisticated and lovely actors as William Powell and Irene Dunne
And the very young Elizabeth Taylor.

Bogart should have been the lead actor in this movie
@@martinober249 William Powell was swell in the role
"Making Fathers trousers kneel seemed more of a sacrilege ". " I know Claire loves me because I keep reminding him"
So many delightfully funny lines in this wonderful movie.
"That's not fair, Vinnie.. When I talk about My relatives I criticize them!"
Irene Dunn was hilarious with her logic of returning the Pug dog and getting the suit!! She portrayed her character perfectly!! Love her in everything she was in!
Puerile is what it was.
@@piyushmathur5121 You had to read the book to get it. This is taken from life--Clarence, Jr's life. The kid grew up to be an author and this was based on his book.
Yes, it's very fun.
@@ocbgrounds6168 I read his book as a kid. It was so funny!
At the table, she almost had Clare Sr biting into her "logic" ;)
It’s hard to believe that Elizabeth Taylor was 14 or 15 while filming this movie. What a doll!
15; and Marty Milner only 16.
I was just wondering if that was Elizabeth Taylor...
She was 19 when this movie was made and played the part of an air headed Bimbo perfectly. Type casting?

Love these old films and the actors. Also love that there is no cursing, nudity, or massive violence such as is mostly the case with today's "entertainment."
Nora Arico - Amen! Lol and there’s a great story!! No need for CGI or garbage when a good story is told.
Nora Arico That is one reason I have been a classic movie fan for several years now. I prefer TCM over any other movie channel. Thank goodness you can find great movies like this here too.
Nora Arico me too, can see it over & over again ❤️
Amen Nora
Totally agree with you 👍
wow, she was 49 , she was gorgeous
A strangely underrated actress of great charm, range and depth.
I can watch this over and over and never tire of it! The dialogue is fantastic. The acting of course is top notch. I only wish these movies were made today!!
If only American parents conducted themselves like this today with firm but respectful control and children showed a better sense of discipline.
They certainly did my day.. My father acted a LOT like Mr Day (although, never would have made a maid cry) and my Mother was most definitely Mrs Day, she ran the house, but, made it look like Dad did it (he wasn't around much though, was always working)!
I have had this book in hardcover for decades and have read it many times, yet I have never seen the movie until now. It was written by Clarence Day and he died the same year the book was published. Day achieved lasting fame in literary circles for his comment, "The world of books is the most remarkable creation of man. Nothing else that he builds ever lasts. Monuments fall, nations perish, civilizations grow old and die out; and, after an era of darkness, new races build others. But in the world of books are volumes that have seen this happen again and again, and yet live on, still young, still as fresh as the day they were written, still telling men's hearts of the hearts of men centuries dead." ....How right he was ,,,,As a writer, these were words that meant a lot to me, since my work will survive me like his work has so well survived him.
What a great quotation.
I love all the classics everyone else does EXCEPT Life With Father. His tantrums and rages are not 'funny' to me and the Irene Dunn role is 2-dimensional cringe worthy and flat - Irene HERSELF hated the role. Believe me I love ALL the classic films, some little known except for Life With Father and Harvey.
I use to have the old hardcover version but at least I have the softcover. Maybe those old books will be worth something in the future.
I think the book was written by Clarence Day Jr.
@@poetcomic1 I think you take it too seriously. It’s meant to be entertainment so the characters are ALL two dimensional.
Loved this move.... wonderful family story, no shooting no killing, no superhero's saving the world! Just ordinary family going on about their lives !!

I love the way the camera pans across the room to reveal to the audience she bought the pug dog without it having to be mentioned in the dialogue until Clare claps eyes on it later in the scene. So many wonderful little touches like this. Also how Vinnie says You know how the coffee pot git broken and Clare changes the subject. Just love this film!
Yep! Lol
Yesssssss LoL 😂
🎉 William Powell was a delight in every movie I have seen him in Irene Dunne had Such a beautiful voice all the characters in this movie were very well represented by all the actors
Love the book and movie. I haven't been to a picture show in years and don't expect to in the future.
I love the fact that she runs the household and all their lives and still lets him think he does -smart woman !
Exactly! People don't get it nowadays. She was the heart of the home.
If most homes in america were like this, what a better place it would be!
Amazing how quickly this type of gentielity & the gracious wisdom it afforded ALL of mankind fell by the wayside ... we lost so much and gained next NOTHING all in the name of "progress". It's just like my grandmother always said "just because something is new it doesn't necessarily make it progress". 😉
That is correct
Nothing like a woman doing all the work and the man taking all the credit. Glad the next generation has seen this for what it is, nonsense. Lying and deception about reality seem to be the hallmark of the older generation. You can have a loving and stable home without this endless stroking of the male ego and the sacrificing of the female. No reason why the man and the woman cannot shine equally.
I've been binge watching these old films while burning the midnight oil doing data entry work 🙃
I could have watched another two hours of this.
I'm the same way when it comes to a good epic motion picture.
Poor maid Annie. Should they have not warned her that Clarence shouts and speaks to himself a lot? :) That was the most hilarious scene for me :)
Why warn The Help? It is her place to conform
Between the plandemic and inflation I needed to see this wonderful movie again. I'm trying to get back my sense of humor.
Children had respect for their parents and called them FATHER AND MOTHER
It gives more MEANING
I call my mother Mommie Dearest
Elizabeth Taylor, in spite of her beauty, was fabulous in her scene on the porch, such deepth and emotion in her eyes.
This has to rank as one of Powell's greatest characters. Suitable for repeat viewing.
I feel very proud that I was a part of the cast when this was represented 30 years ago by the local theater company here in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The play is as classy as this movie is. I played Whitney, the third Day kid (I was 12 at the time). One truly great memory that I will always cherish, and seeing this movie, brings me back to those days.

Just watched this movie on TV. The scene where William Powell and Irene Dunne sing almost made me cry. And that last scene when Clarence kneels when talking to Mary, even when his father said a man should never do that, was a perfect ending.
I love William Powell, this was a cute movie with lots of giggles and smiles throughout x
Clarence was such a hilarious character to play, and William Powell did a splendid job. I did not realize Elizabeth Taylor was Mary. What a wonderful hilarious movie,
For some reason, I thought Mary was played by Teresa wright. They look the same
Thank You
So nice to watch a clean movie.
I love this movie. Vinnie's interaction and being the center of the family is what works.
A time gone by when movies were promoting good manners and faith. No cursing or sex or any other vulgarity. I love the scene where they are in church praying and the pastor is thanking God for all of their blessings; how lovely and humbling. Sure, his misogynistic attitude toward women makes us laugh now days, and we are glad that that is a thing of the past, but the good family values, the respect for parent and adults in general, the pleasantries of social relations (good morning, thank, please, may I) are a delight to watch; they uplift us and inspire each one of us to be better individuals ourselves. This is a movie that leaves you with a good feeling in your soul; oh how I wish we could have some of this gentleness back!
Sam Spade
Obviously you are an idiot; therefore, there is no point debating anything with you, your arrogance and cynical attitude gets in the way. Nevertheless, I remain of the opinion that in 1880 western society was more civilized than today and moral values still meant something. They might not have had cell phones but at least spreading your legs while swinging from a pole was not something that women aspired to!
Horse With No Name men like strippers
The racism, the classism, the homophobia. The good ol days
@@Catglittercrafts Obviously, you focus on the things you love and I focus on the things that I love, which are the good things that were prevalent in those day. Sadly, you seem stuck on the negative, which today is mostly gone, but along with the bad the good is also gone and new ills plague our societies. There is nothing wrong with longing for a time when children spoke to adults with respect and women where treated like ladies! I don't miss the racism or misogyny, I miss the good manners, the class, the respect, the order, and the faith of those days!

A very nice way of showing how we make our lives out of our inner worlds, and how difficult it can be to communicate because of our different needs and points of view of life. It was also much more difficult for the not so fortunate ones... working hours, medical care, no labour laws...
@@slouberiee While it's certainly true that the poor in those days had difficult lives, the ones that lived long enough at least saw massive improvements in average standards of living. Experiencing the upward path of the average American from, say, 1890 to 1950 must have been quite something. On the other hand, today's average standards of living seem to be somewhat stagnant in most developed countries, if not outright on the decline.
