We all know that mountain bikers are really skilful, on their mountain bikes. But, does that mean that they're good on road bikes too?
We weren't too sure, so we invited our friend Neil Donoghue from GMBN over to see if he could wheelie on one of our Canyon road bikes.
Don't forget to SHARE this one!

"Skids are for kids. Wheelies are for adults."
That is some sage level shit.
damm!i'm a 40 years kid
Never in doubt. Neil is the GCN vs GMBN wheelie king.
+Global Mountain Bike Network - Lasty wants his bike back
+Global Cycling Network Someone's gotta change the tires after all that skidding.
No Dan is Neil and u know it 😢
+Global Cycling Network On the evidence of the Muro de Aia video, he's probably willing to do without for a few weeks...
+Global Cycling Network it might be a bit of a bumpy ride when he gets it back
"Sagan wheelies while on the tops" *Shows video of Sagan on the hoods*
Used to to wheelies all the time back in the days on my steel road bike. Now a day with the price of carbon I would need to find me a good sponsor first ;-)
Why?
@@Sestenise it puts a little bit of extra pressure on your bearings
ugastronomie 123 people do it all the time on carbon bikes
This is why steel is real.
@@corynardin fuck carbon
"Ya, it's called a rim brake" XD
hahahaha
I was going down a hill doing a wheelie and fell of I K.O my self hahaha
+Confident Gaming off
thechosendude lol
I'm pretty sure it's called a v-brake
Dan: riders like Peter Sagan holds onto the tops when wheelie-ing. Shows footage of Sagan wheelie-ing while gripping the hoods, feathering the brakes.
+woozer Should have showed the clip of Sagan falling on his arse in Belgium after the tour!
I love these crossover videos
Back in the early 80s I was playing alone in the street on my BMX and had stopped in the centre of road when suddenly two guys on road bikes both wheeling perfectly toward me and then passed by ether side of me. I was totally impressed. They were both smiling, can hardly remember it, its almost unbelievable that it happened to me, but it did. When I grow up I also mastered the wheelie on a BMX but I'll never forget that day.
GCN vs GMBN cyclocross race or mtb/roadie duathlon when?
Syborg would probably come out victorious in the cyclocross
edit: or Jeremy Powers
This is the equivalent of drifting an f1 car
Excellent comparison! I agree.
It's really really not.
It’s treason then
Jumping a time attack car
No it isn't ROFL!!!!! wheeling anything with pedals is EASY.
Loving the GCN/GMBN crossovers, especially the faux-pas; Neil's skidding on Lasty's tyres and Dan dredging up the off-road clothing debate
I love your sense of humour Dan, the dry jokes at the beginning had me laughing!
I've already done this by accident while I was joining a main road... scary but hilarious
Omg that's mad
Aren't you special...
Yeah I found this out my self peddaling in the lowest gear Lol
These videos are great! I'm definitely a roadie...and never learned any of these skills. You guys really describe it so well...I'm going to go get my gravel bike (road bars) and start with that! Thanks GCN (and GMBN! You guys are awesome!
5:38 was such a good laugh!
Nice video keep up the great work!!
Amazing how Don makes things look so easy.
Another awesome video mate well done
That was great !! Best thing I have seen all day. Ya bikes !!!!
From a pro on team Dimension Data, to teaching us how to wheelie... Dan can do it all.
+Steven Anderson he isn't even pro rider for Dimension Data
+Olivier he used to be, he's now retired
+Olivier Yea, that's the joke... Haven't you seen their April Fools joke?
Steven Anderson Lol you can't read, can you. I said he ISN'T. But if you were joking. Great joke man, KIU! :p
+Olivier You just repeated what I initially said... Notice the word "from"
I really enjoy this kind of co-op videos, I think there are loads of people who cant decide what they like more, mountain or road...
Awesome guys, so funny too. Loved the part on "how do these brakes work?"
Nice learning curve, Dan !
Thank you for your help. Watching to your video really helped me.. Now I am able to do wheelie on my Gravel road bike 🚲
"That lad doesn't pay for his tyres"
Dan's 1-liners in this is are very good!
5:00 I've done that exact thing whole trying to show off to my friends, luckily landed on my feet
I was also on a hybrid rather than a roadie
GCN has got the best banter ever
great video I'm going to try this 🤘
Snot rockets, wheelies, what's next? How to carry a pack of tinnies home on your top tube?
+Samuel Mumby great idea Samuel!
+Global Cycling Network Don't take this as an insult, I'm loving the more off the wall videos! bike/beer logistics video is what we need
+Samuel Mumby Don't you think that we'll be missing swapping pedals from clipless to flat, lowering the seat (loosing the recommended by GCN tape height mark), mounting a steering bar with embedded stem as shown on video..... and go wheelie?
Savage
This is an important skill much like the single plastic carrier bag full of heavy stuff hanging from your handlebar technique.
XD best expression at 2:18
a mix of confusion and slight disgust : ugh do they really still use theese?
Cool video Neil. ..
The Boss at work.
I need to learn this
Will try it tomorrow.
Take these dudes to Alps (or any suitable mountain), they use the trail vs the GCN crew taking the road to some summit finish. Last team across a joint finish line have to descend the mountain on a recumbent with no diapers. Would be amazing!
I found that using your knees for left-right balance is better than turning your front wheel. When the front wheel hits the ground, you really want it to be straight. I learned this the painful way ;-)
And it looks a lot better too!
"How's this, Dan?"
Doing a wheelie with one hand... You guys are too much :P.
Holy crap eell if you can wheelie that bike you can wheelie anything lol super video thanks for sharing
"I've told you before, skids are for kids." Ha!
I feel like you guys need to do way more collabs
Please more collaborations :)
Nice vid
I did it sometimes with my old, cheaper roadie but not really doing recently anymore on my new road bikes, since my new bikes are much more expensive to repair if I brake them. :/ :D Btw, nice little short video! :)
I can imagine Tom Lasts face would be the same as climbing the Muro de Aia when he saw Neil skid his bike
How did you guys manage to get your hands on a Canyon Aeroad in that particular Red color scheme (with white logos)? It looks like the Katusha bike and not something on offer on their website, and it looks awesome!
You guys are hilarious
That’s at rowberrow warren, my local!
How to do stoppie on a road bike?
Clench your front wheel brake.
Jonas Nick if you grab it hard enough
And shift your weights towards the bike don't stick your ass back
@@OktoberStorm I don’t have any front brakes I did a wheel swap on the front for a different sized rim and tire and the brake doesn’t line up so I just don’t have one I got the rear brake though I grinder the lever in half so I can use 2 fingers on the rear brake when. Doing wheelies
Do a video comparing Frankenstein Road Bikes and road bikes! 😀👍
any idea of how much time was saved during those wheelies over 40km compared to a climbing bike wheelie?
no more wheelies for me after bare foot bmx wheelie accident - good vid - wish i was game to do
'Does this just clamp on to the rim?'
'Yeah, it's called a 'rim brake' '
Lololol
Damn..... da Physics of it (Thumbs up).
MAN THIS IS LIKE TOP GEAR FOR BICYCLES!!
in which gear should the cycle be on while lifting it?
its Like Teaching Danny Mackaskill how to Bunny Hop on a Road Bike. this is hilarious
Great.
Matt look at Neil's shoes you don't have to clip in 😂😂😂😂 (sorry Matt)
Neil's technique looks smoother than Dan's. Learn to edit your videos to make the guest look a bit worse GCN !! You should have got a Neil stunt double to faceplant or something... ; )
I just got some P1 Powertap pedals which means I had to switch from mtb shoes to road shoes. After about 2 weeks of riding I was doing a wheelie and went too far back...My attempt to unclip was unsuccessful since my feet are locked in tighter than I'm used to and I landed flat on my back. I broke my new phone and my back is still uncomfortable when jogging or stretching my back. Hopefully no long term damage.
Is this near rowberrow warren?
Dan Lloyd rocking moto brakes.
What is the model of that black bike?
Which is the brake i got to use ?
How did Don do that skid?
You should do a video on if you lose power when you have a "pro position" on your bike aka a long and slammed stem
Wohahaha Neil rules wheelies!!!!
do i need to use almost no bar tape too?
the hardest part about wheelies for me is that i start to tilt to the left or right, seems like no wheelie videos address this, but ive found that poking your knees out to counter your tilt helps a lot, you can see anyone doing this to keep balance in their wheelie, but it seems like a lot don't mention this.
@Brandon Clarl: true. Knees help a lot. I made a POV video (MTB) and you can clearly see how useful it is: czcams.com/video/3CD4Qm6oJUg/video.html (3:00)
I can even take corners using this technique. Another tip is to keep your arms stretched out when pulling on the bar, with the exact same force on your left and right arm. Think "Triangle" (left arm, bar, right arm). 2 years late, sorry...
Someone pls tell me do you need front suspension to pop a wheelie
Can Neil wheelie a TT bike?
+Jason Bækmand I feel like that is suicide
Jason Bækmand what's that
Time Trial bike
Durrant Miller oh alright thanks
Jason Bækmand Neil can wheelie a unicycle
What bike are you using?
The mountain biker is on dura ace and the cyclist is on ultegra?
the23rdshadowdragon thats not his bike tho
MTB riders are mostly rich as you can tell by the price of their FS bikes so it makes sense
Oh I'm aware, I'm just jealous that I can't afford a nice mountain bike haha
Respect Ultegras ok hahaha
I'm just gonna leave this stuff to Sagan.
dan is here for this video, dayang.
To add, a little incline is also helpful
Dan - "The Ball is on the other foot"? not sure what cycling jargon this is ;)
Back brake a bit drastic, when the front wheel is in the air and spinning a dab of front brake will bring the front down and you won't lose any momentum peddling 👍🏻
I was truly excited to see the Don in lycra...
Shout out for Charterhouse.
torqueback
I started cycling more seriously about a year ago but have found that i get bored of the same roads. At first i loved exploring and discovering new roads, especially country lanes and now i have been cycling for a while, i have lost that feeling of exploring new places. I have tried to experiment with different routes but recently i have noticed that i have been on all the roads suitable for cycling near my area several times already. How can i be less bored on the bike and less bored with using the same roads (without going on an expensive training camp)?
I would love to try ... 2 bad these bikes coast crazy .... these bikes are Insain light
Nice cycle
I am totally confused about the braking I am seeing here! I noticed both on the GMBN video with Dan learning to manual and this video where Don is learning to wheelie a road bike, that the referenced use of the rear brake always comes with the action of the left lever... After all these years of riding, am I still an obvious newbie to the real cyclist, since my rear brake control is on the right? Have I been braking all wrong for all these years? Do I need to go, right now, and swap sides of the bar with my levers so I can move from poser to "pro"?! Is this just a US vs UK thing? I'm SO confused.
+David Barnet Sorry Neil Donohue! I mistakenly referred to you as Don instead of The Don. I've been watching GMBN a bit now too and enjoying all your tips for the dirt world. Again, apologies for confusing your name!
+David Barnet hi David. It's purely a country by country thing. Here in the UK, and in places such as Australia and South Africa etc, the right brake is the front one and the left the rear. However in America and most of the rest of the world it's the other way around.
Global Cycling Network You are Querdenker.
Johnny was racing around the garden on his new bicycle and called out to his mother to watch his tricks. Look, Mum! No hands! Look, Mum! No feet! Waaah! Look, Mum! No teeth!
when bringing the front wheel up, you don't have to worry about damaging rims or frames or anything when you bring it back down rather hard, Do you?
2:16 It’s called a rim brake! XD
What are rims if not big metal discs, anyways.
You guys should have Nick and Nate Diaz from the UFC on GCN and GMBN they do both Road and Mountain biking plus it would be a super duper collaboration
I have both a full sus trail bike and full sus xc bicycle, both are 27.5, which one of these two bikes should I start learning manuals, bunny hops, and wheelies on?
Both have dropper posts.
Guys plz make a video on how to wheeli on a non-geared bike
00:53 ahhhhhhhhhhhh ooooooooooo awwwwwwwwww a bit wobbly
Why is the rear brake on the left side??
Hmm... It's nice that you've brought Neal back for a spin, but he looks sort of... different, somehow. I can't put my finger on it, though. :/
Its neil from gmbn wow
The little elf on the red bike is much better, at the wheelie, than the scarecrow on the black bike.
As u see to your left a fully suited up in road bike uniform, and to your right u see the gmbn in shorts and shirt... funny arising the difference in the way mtb dresses vs gcn
Iv never weelied my roadbike.... Im scared to it looks like dollar signs to me.
My fixie has never ridden on one wheel lol. I feel like staying uproght and shifting your ass around and keeping bars straight unless on a turn in a wheelie is how to counterbalance for wind and slopes in road
how do you wheelie on a beach cruiser
dat boi
