Can You Learn To Wheelie A Bike In Just One Day?

- Despite being a pro cyclist for the best part of a decade, and racing the Giro, the Vuelta, and the Rutland Melton Cicle Classic; Conor can't wheelie his bike. Whether it's because he's too tall, or just doesn't have the skills - nobody knows. Fortunately, he's roped in the help of a certified wheelie expert in the form of Sam Bennett to give him some pro tips as he challenges himself to learn how to wheelie in just one day. Will he be able to master the skill in a day? Who Knows? Who Cares? Brother In Law Nigel certainly doesn't....

Best things about lockdown GCN has to be Nigel. The man's a legend. Is he the reason that Connor was recruited?
His name is Brotherinlawnigel!
Actually, Nigel + Zoe
Basically the only reason. Certainly wasn't for his wheelie skills was it?!
Nigel ... he calls it as he sees it. Marvellous. Has he enough free time between cutting the grass to be Conor's cameraman and ace critic?
Very NSFW: czcams.com/video/sLkYUQ_cyrk/video.html
"What do you think I was messing up?". - "You couldn't pull a wheelie". Classic comedy duo. Please tell me Nigel will continue as a presenter with Connor. Brightened my day enormously. Thank you.
11:28 Connor - the only man in the world who needs a drone to capture footage at head height
that was just so Nigel didn't have to get up from the swing
🤣
“Filming this eejut cycling round my garden” 😂 yep that’s it in a nutshell.
BEST EVER GCN CONTENT!!!! These guys are classic. Sign Nigel up to GCN
Conor and Nigel reminds me to Stan and Olio duo :)
These two are a good add. I do miss the departed.
A great duo....you should also throw this out to GCN subscribers and get them to forward their videos....
Hysterical 😭 watched it twice , not because I want to wheelie but for Nigel and his lack of interest 😂
Nigel is definitely a highlight!
GCN need to sign Nigel up and can we see his full wheelie looked like it was longer
Nigel's wheelie is the best part of this video. lol
I've not pulled a wheely in probably 25 years. I'm now too nervous to try, my body doesn't bounce anymore. Also, Nigel proving to be a legend once again 👏 👍
It's never too late to learn new things! A fortnight ago I couldn't snap my fingers properly. Then I realised that CZcams teaches you that as well; now I can. I'm 40.
But the looks of the bypassers are almost as priceless as Nigel's.
An impressive case of lockdown helmet hair
Nigel is the new star of GCN!
I feel like this is what Connor would be doing even if he wasn't on GCN.
Nigel was the star :) wot an eeejut 😂
General tips for wheelies:
1. Raise neck and or handle bars to increase leverage to pull wheel off the ground. ==> the lower the neck/handle bars combination, the higher up the front axle must be to hit the balance point... The greater this angle is, the lesser the margin for error to be slightly higher or lower than the sweet spot which, in turn decreases consistency. The best bikes to learn a wheelie on would be the old 70's bicycles with the banana seats where the weight can be maybe 12 inches behind where the weight would be on say a road bike seat. The further back one can get on the seat to be closer to the axle the better. Combine this with taller handle bars and you effectively dramatically decrease the angle/height of the front wheel off the ground to hit the sweet spot of the balance point. ==> The lower the front wheel, the greater the margin for error and therefore the greater the consistency of the wheelie.
2. Pull the chin back and line up the back of the head with the back of the back as if you're leaning up against the wall. This position minimizes inconsistency in position that is certainly very difficult for an inexperienced wheelie learner.
3. Keep arms straight, nose lined up with sternum, sternum over belly button over hips. ==> People all the time pull up with their arms and usually lose the alignment described above.... This makes the bike tilt where one side or the other of the handlebars is lower than the other.
4. If you're up and below the sweet spot, simply shift the weight backwards from the position described in #3. If below the sweet spot, gently apply the rear brake.
5. Your hips are the most important body part to control the balance point once in position from number 3. Just like when you go around a corner and you lean side to side during regular riding, you can control the coordinated side to side lean of wheelie turning the same way as well as moving the hips backwards(like arching the low back) to pull up the front end or the opposite to lower it.
Wheelies are all about minimalized input. When you watch somebody who is good, they seem to hardly move because they are efficient over the sweet spot. Kind of think of when you drove the car for rhe first time and you did massive(relatively speaking) steering inputs to stay in the lane going down the highway as compared to now where on straight highway steering inputs are almost unnoticeable.... That's what you want to do with wheelies....
I love how we cyclists can say "and he's wearing pajamas" with a straight face while wearing spandex ourselves 😀.
brilliant boys absolute entertainent, genuinely lol at Nigel.
Thank you very much GCN for all the content, help and tips about cycling! I even started my cycling channel inspired by all of your hard work, its very much appreciated. Look forward for your future cycling journeys.
The preceding and reigning Irish national champions in one video! That was hilarious! Poor Nigel..
Nigel as big dad-watching-the-neighbor’s-kid energy.
Nigel would make a great post lockdown GCN presenter. Sign him up now.
I love the fact, that this was done in complete GCN attire. Look at me, I‘m a semi-professional rider... practicing wheelies... in a park... with a camera man. 😎
On the other hand, kudos for that 5 second wheelie, we all know you held it for at least another two seconds out of frame!
Actually on Brother-in-Law Nigel's farm.
Nigel is a class act. He needs to be included in all GCN vlogs.
I am impressed. Top marks for giving it a go. Thanks for sharing.
I was really hoping that after all that, camera would cut to Nigel slamming out a massive wheelie like it was nothing. He's the best.
Man!!! That gives me hope, I am exactly like you...Maybe I should practice more.
Didnt have time to watch full but forwarded to Nigel parts :) awesome!
Connor and brother-in-law Nigel are like the two Ronnie's. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Proper comedy pair. I love Connors style of presenting. If I see a video that has been done by him it's getting an instant click.
Aw thanks Ben!! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Everyone has a friend like Nigel. The one friend who's not interested in cycling but you bored the sh!t out of with all your cycling talk. CLASS.
He was on his dad's (Sean Kelly) cycling team about 10 years ago. Not sure what his role was though...
I bet I wasn't alone in expecting Nigel to pull a wheelie at the end of this video. But that was a good try, Conor. I do wheelies on one of my regular rides. They're high enough and long enough to get my front wheel over a half-dropped curb, i.e. a few centimetres. I won't be so proud of that skill, now.
This is awesome entertainment. I like that Conor seems to understand the time aspect of learning a new skill, so he practiced the very first step, solidly, for 30 minutes. That's a great way to approach learning something completely (or nearly completely) new. Great addition of Nigel in there - with some honing they could also be the classic comedy duo.
What did'nt watch the Dan lloyd video on how to do wheelies.
Well done Conner great effort
Love the comedic duo of Connor and brother in law Nigel. Makes for some great content
You are one persistent individual.
Good progress for someone who started today.
Time and practice is everything
Great stuff 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'd settle for any bike handling skill. Cornering, wheelie, skid. Too brittle to learn now.
Connor is like a 2m high child! I love it! I pull wheelies just like him but i feel ready to start practecing more! Great vídeo
Being 6'3" I feel Conor's pain with cycling shorts. I just got a pair of Santic XXL shorts on Amazon and they're on the verge of looking like Boxer Briefs on my longer legs. I need to find some Men's Cycling Capris pants so they actually go down to my knees.
I was convinced I could pull a wheelie last year, I go through these phases, even dream I can do it. I popped one coming up a little rise back into our village, riding with my young lads back from home school, had it nailed for that brief, sweet moment, then piled it in off the back. My boys barely broke stride, they saw it coming a mile away, and often remind me on that road not to pull a wheelie! 🤣
Shaun Green I’ve had dreams of doing it to 😂😂
This is the best video GCN has ever produced. Ever. Connor, keep your arms straight, it'll keep your weight back properly.
Thanks Ruff, appreciate that!! I tried my best to keep the arms straight... so scary tho haha
Frankly its unacceptable that some has-been "pro" was asked for advice on wheelies when we all know Dan Lloyd is the expert. It doesn't look like he ever made an appearance.
I know; Lloydy was on the Cervelo Test Team, after all. Doesn't get much more "pro" than that! ;)
Best Conor/Nigel video by far. You guys knocked it out of the park! Nigel is the perfect straight man to Conor's hilarity. Can't wait to see more.
Thanks Daryl, glad you enjoyed this one!
Nigel was fantastic in this video! 👌
Great video, thanks Conor, Nigel and GCN!
Thank you!!!
Connor and Nigel, what a comic duo! This video gave me a good chuckle.
That was wheelie good Connor I'll have to give it a go. Double thumb'sup for Nigel
Great video, Connor and Nigel make a great couple! Impressed by Connor's determination
Nigel - the hero we needed.
Nigel is a hero!
Nigel needs his own segment on GCN. Classic!
Brother in law Nigel is the best. GCN should hire him👍😂
Love this video and it was very entertaining 😉
Please ask Nigel to be a presenter, his deadpan delivery is a welcome relief. Next GCN poll should ask viewers
As a teen my bike had a backpedalling break, but my mothers had handbrakes, when I was on her classic ladybike I rode substantial parts of the 13 kilometers back from school only on my rear wheel. After falling on my back once, I just couldn.t lift my front wheel anymore, soon will I start practising again being over 50, with your tips, starting with dirt tires on grass.
Nigel is impressive, as always!
#1 Conor & Nigel are hilarious
#2 Conor, you did awesome
#3 I couldn't do a wheelie on a road bike to save my life...maybe on a BMX bike or something
#4 Conor, you're a good sport! Keep bringing us your silly adventures!
You guys are great, keep it up😊😎
Bloody hilarious, start to finish
Read up on Tamaki's various studies on sleep and motor skills learning (2013/2019). In short, we reach a point where we essentially cap out on learning within a day and reach diminishing returns. It is when we go to sleep that our brain defragments everything we've learned from the day to be more effective. There may be some who can wheelie in a day, but most people probably need consecutive days of practice.
convinced that with a good night's rest Conor will impress himself on what he can do. Also, it's easier on pavement.
right, 30 minutes for 20 days, rather than 10 hours straight
@@billinhouston3291 Exactly
Pretty impressive doing that with a road bike, Conor! I'm terrible at them, as well! Nigel is hilarious, too.
Lovin Nigel - got to video this eejiut!!
More of Nigel to come! What would you like to see him and Conor tackle next?
@@gcn absolutely anything, whatever as long as Nigel is in the video. Reminds me of the chuckle brothers 🤣😂😁
@@gcn Build and successfully test a homemade turbo trainer for lockdown.
Zoey and Nigel are truly amazing alongside Conor 😂😂😂 Perfect trio 👌🏻❤️🔥
Look at my boy Sam Bennett with the Nike Air Max 270 React Bauhaus. Love that shoe.
Nigel gotta be my fav gcn person 😁
A few things; 1. Advice from SAM BENNET !!!! 2. Seeing a great pro like Connor look like an amateur and being such a good sport 3. Nigel
Could never have foreseen this gold...
It's wheelie tough!
That deserves a GCN water bottle.
Fantastic video.... Connor is the funniest of all presenters.... Nigel is great craic too....🤔😂
I totally feel Nigel!
Pure class!
Looks like Nigel nailed it at the end there!
Good job Bro! Keep practicing and record a new epic 10 sec !!!
"Keep rolling, Nigel!" Don't know why, but that cracked me up.
Becoming a wheelie master being able to turn and hold it almost indefinitely for me on my xc bike took 1.5 years
after the isolation is over can brother-in-law Nigel still be part of the channel, id say he's the best presenter
This is a life saver when you need one the most!
I need to go out and try also. I'm also a tall guy so i guess it will be a similar tough quest! Good efford Connor!
Thank you!
Well done Connor👍
where was Nigel's wheelie???? great vids love them!
So funny! Love it.
Love Nigel in the video's.
Connor, what did you do as a kid? We had all kinds of weird bike related contests - follow the leader (which was kind of boring), longest wheelie, how long could you take to cross 1 concrete block (from one expansion joint to the next) and ramps/jumps.
Connor is like a big child, this video made me laugh so hard. Great content!
Nigel is comedy genius- he needs a show with him and Blake- I’d pay for that 👍👏👏
Great entertainment, more Connor and Nigel please, from locked down down under.
GCN right now: "We're only making plans for Nigel
We only want what's best for him
We're only making plans for Nigel
Nigel just needs this helping hand"
I'm sure he's never heard that song before 😝
I think about that song every time Nigel's name is mentioned....
XTC
Nice kicks!
More Nigel please.
The Nigel character is brilliant!
the dog is great haha
Gmbn and Mike Boyd videos might help for wheelies and manuals. I haven’t tried yet but seemed you need to get weight further back and keep arms locked
Good job!
NowI need to look for the episodes with Nigel! Kudos to Connor for trying! I am to lazy to even put on my lyrca stuff.
Haha thanks Megan. Nigel is definitely keeping Conor grounded during lockdown. You can do it, even if we can't!
GCN BN - GNC AN
Before Nigel... After Nigel...
Welcome to the new era!
Thanks brother in law Nigel🙏
Haha thanks Raphael
Hair sticking through the helmet like that is so relatable
Nigel can do it all, clearly!
Nigel stole the show... It would have been awesome if Nigel takes the bike and pulls a long wheelie at the end.
I could watch Nigel's indifference all day :D
That was a wheelie fun video to watch 😜
Fantastic, made me laugh :) Can I suggest the next video is Connor doing stoppies, I would be head or heels for that (and so probably would Connor!).
Brother in law Nigel absolutely roasted Conor once again :D Comedy gold!
Imma look up beginner speed bike Gcn could use a top tips for speed bike beginners have rode single tracks and more mountain type bikes. Have a 1965 chicago schwinn victory I'm fixing but not sure about it being my speed bike
