"Kamal Haasan has a tremendous experience of cinematic life" - Sab John | Guna | Kamal Haasan

- John Edathattil (credited, sometimes, as Sab John) is the screenwriter of Guna (1991). In this video, he talks about writing a script based on the Sri Lankan civil war for Kamal Haasan, and then writing Guna when that project was dropped. He speaks about writing through a personal crisis, and the various aspects of the character of Guna (the religious nature, the 'thaali', his hatred for his face). He speaks of how Kamal improved the "Pentathol" scene with his acting, and also his inputs to the screenplay. He speaks of how Ilayaraja heightened the screenplay with his magnificent score (and that "letter song"). He speaks of how visuals (like the cave) enhance a screenplay, how to make a 'unique' script more mainstream, and whether screenwriting can be taught. He names recent films he liked for their screenplay (Pizza, Soodhu Kavvum, Maanagaram, Vikram Vedha, Dhuruvangal Padhinaaru), and says how much he was affected by Balaji Shaktivel's Kadhal.
#27YearsofGuna #Guna #KamalHaasan
Anybody here after the release of Manjummel Boys, Guna and Kanmani Anbudan song?
🖖
Have seen this video when it was uploaded. Rewatching after watching Manjummel Boys.
Is there any actor in this world whose movie has been discussed liken this. Thank you Kamal Ji
@Chang Komara these two stupid comments I am seeing everywhere
Plz don't worry about the views! Keep the show running! This video will earn till youtube exists!
Gopinath Rajsekar Thank you. Yes. Views are important. But just letting that one aspect determine content is of no use.
Very well said
Super sir.
Baradwaj Rangan beautiful interview sir. I have watched this earlier. I m a big fan of KamalHaasan Sir. You made my day. Do continue your great work.
❤️🔥
Wow! That bit where BR drew parallels between moondram pirai and guna. Just blew me away. Way to go BR!
Shriram Devanathan that blew me too. Didn't see that coming, but it's true. Kamal in both films, acting as a guardian to women that are still strangers to him.
It brings chills n tears when I watch that hospital scene from #Guna. Wonder how he pulled it off!
#GodOfActing
#Guna is one of The Epic Screenplay Shows The God Loving Man loves the God Girl The Screenplay The story Connect to the People The Writer Explanations Semma Super #KamalHassanEpicThroughHisActing Semma Super 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Happy Birthday King Kamalhassan. Long Live Ulaganayagan Padmabhusan Dr. Kamalhassan. Salute Bigg Boss & Pride of Indian Cinema.
Loved the interview. Expecting more interviews of screenwriters.
I think I better stop watching this video and start to watch GUNA once again
Good to know, Bharadwaj.........Kamal Hassan - A gift to Tamil Cinema along the lines of Sivaji Ganesan (when it comes to "heroes", because there are several others in the supporting actors category like Nagesh, Manorama, Nassar etc.).....I wonder WHO ELSE could have pulled off a Guna or Mahanadhi / Salangai Oli / Anbe Sivam / Moondram Pirai / Thevar Magan / Unnal Mudiyum Thambi / Chaplin role in Punnagai Mannan to name a few of his GEMS. No one else comes to my mind.
Ilayaraja BGM took the movie to a different plane
Genius at work
The transition from Script to Screen was wonderful. Thank you John sir
happy birthday kamal sir... a legend in action..
19:37 Goosebumps
I first listened to the dialogue that precedes the song "Unnai Naan Ariven" portrayed on Rekha & Kamal, on the cassette. I was STUNNED by the emotions he could deliver just by uttering them (without any visuals). When I watched the movie later, I thought he deserved EVERY BIT of accolade he got and he deserved more. IR MUSIC gives the movie yet another unimaginable dimension.
great respect to Mr.Hassan ...greatest after satyajit Ray.
Phenomenal screenplay writer!!
This man is a genius!
Few days back watched Guna after very long time, couldn't come out of it till now.
Very well written movie n the the wonderful dialogues.. loved the heroine n the shortlived cute romance between the lead.
Great writer and great interviewer. Everyone is in awe about Ilayaraja whose genius is unparalleled. I can't think of the movies without IR's score.
Such a satisfying video to watch. It's always adorable to watch experts in their craft talk about their creative decisions. Amazing interview!
A Movie way ahead of it's time. Bombed in the BO, despite co-release with Thalapathy
Its an unbelievable movie.. kamal sir acting is just omg..ilayaraaja sir just lifted the feel of the movie to next level.. i loved heroine roshini acting in the movie
Phenomenal video.. groundbreaking concept.. pls continue
Aditya Raghavan Thank you. We plan to do many more.
Totally enjoyed this tête-à-tête! The passion in Edathattil’s eyes are infectious! And the structure and flow of the interview was flawless and impeccable! 28 min well spent for me!
One of the best and most insightful interviews I have seen. Heading off to know more about Sab John !

Glad you liked it. Stay tuned!
I still remember I was restless after watching the movie in a theatre called Ashoka in Bangalore, it had a long lasting impact ,
And now when it is analyzing with its screen writer, A great tribute
Wow.... No words.... Bow down to BR, John and Kamal.
Aarti Christeen Thank you. And do spread the word about FC South.
Whatta movie 🔥 no idea how many times I watched, and this interview tempt me to watch again today uffff 🔥🔥🔥
Such a meaningful interview in midst of many on-line obsolete topics....
they forgot or hide abhirami bhattar's real story from which the character of Guna was created. Abhirami bhattar says today is pournami to the abhirami Devi temple priest... ! It's a real awesome story very few knows.
Can u explain.. couldn't understand
Now that was something worth watching. Salute.
John sir, i am really moved by your analysis and ideology of script writing. Hatts off sir, what a timeless writings u have given, splendid !
this is a brilliant interview.
Awsum BR sir!!👍🏼👍🏼
Keep rocking!!
Sab John sir, an artistic soul!
Excellent interview. Though the CZcams algorithm perhaps suggested this on the back of Manjummel Boys, Sab John's explanation of Guna screenplay and the development of characters is outstanding
Great video BR sir every aspiring writer would be have a great experience watching this video thanks alot for this and keep it coming time to time.
Lijo Varghese Thank you. Stay tuned.
An awesome interview. Really the Master of Cine Interviers #BR
awesome, wanna see more videos like this.
best way to wish B'day to legend
Sab John sir great interview
what an excellent interview
srikanth Kirs Thank you.
Super interview... keep goingggg
Wow excellent interview. Thoughtful questions bringing out exactly what was in the mind of the script writer. It would be hard to pick films from tamil cinema that had such deep characterization , subliminal motifs and larger themes than just where the story is set in.am waiting to see what movie u select next to go in depth.
Best interview for screen writers.
Great interview
So many years after I watched the movie, the sparrow motif has been my reference to the film. I was worried BR was not going to get to it. Thank you.
An amazing new series. Hoping for more such insightful episodes.
Vigneshwar M P Wasn't it lovely how the sparrow motif connects to the other animal motifs in the film?
Yes. Rohini's fear mirroring the sparrow's when they enter the house. The way Guna responds with fox calls and talks to sparrow showed, as John Edathattil explains, that he could communicate with the animals while others felt strange. Also, another small reference was in the cave where Rohini draws a parallel to them being in a cave to a couple of bees inside a Lotus.
Thank you so much BR and FC south for this amazingly brilliant interview....I was always waiting to listen something about the making of Guna from thalaivar kamal and his team which till now has not come up until you brought this up .... thank you so much again !!!!! Please capture such interviews on Thevar Magan,Sathya, Mahanadhi, Virumandi, Apoorva Sagothargal ...need some interviews from Singeetham Sineevasa rao sir, Santhana bharathi sir, P C Sreeram sir, K Vishwanath ji, Suresh Krissna Sir etc !!!!! Brillaint screenwriter John Sir... !!!! Please make use of these geniuses and allow them to work at what they are best at !!!!! and Rosy as a sister in Guna just blew me away...I was guessing like BR as someone who wants to marry Guna and has a soft corner for him !!!
legendwarrior85 Thank you. We plan to cover many more films.
insight giving conversation
Very clear why they chose to work with each other. Wave lengths match and at the sa me time they have a mind of their own
happy birthday to my admier kamal sir my favorite is chiranjeevi
Chiranjeevi joker😂
Happy birthday Kamal Hassan Sir
Happy birthday
descriptive and very informative
Nice film the aesthetic illusion love between guna and roshini Abirami... A beautiful story that makes us realize that someone is there for us to love ourselves
Quite an experience :)
Kindly teach more about screen writing by interviewing various writers
Haven't Manjumal boys fans arrived yet?
This guy came in kuruthipunal
Sab John you are the best
Super
Just realised Sab John played the role of one of Naxals in the movie Kurudhippunal 😯 who gets shot by Kamal behind the theater screen
Super with a silver spoon touch
Guna ......*Goosebumps* 🙏🙏🙏🙏 but still keep avoiding from seeing.....too heavy stuffffff 😭😭 true Ji. A love story of those times won't workout this day of so called internet love with breakups like way of the World! The true love of those days I would say is avoided on purpose this day for ...... *The attached **#painful* 😓😪kids face enough pain in reality even b4 falling into a relationship at home itself with internet impact and so they no more want more pain from true love. That's the fact!
I really wanted to watch the writers perspective of guna movie which I watch after seeing mannum mel boys. I am impressed by the story and his writing.
Absolutely loved this interview and just like u, I remember having a somewhat different take on the Rekha Kamal equation 🤔 interesting 👍🏻
Kamal sir great man.
11:58 'Cinema is an exaggeration not life'......!
✨️
Saw the film again after many years. It was a near perfect film.Amazing writing. BR Sir, where is the actress Roshni now ? It's such a pity that she gave a sterling performance and was not seen in any other films after that
She acted in a Tamil film and few Telugu films which were only bad films and didn't extract the best from the actress. May be Abhirami is just enough, at least to me.
@@Michael_017Do u remember her Telugu movie names
Guna title is Story&Screen play SAPJOHN....
This guy john edayathil same one?
Guna super super super super super super super super super super super super super
John Edathattil played a role in Kuruthi Punal?
Mr. John was reluctant in giving credits to Kamalhasan for improvising the script. BR had to ask the question twice but somehow managed to evade or dilute the context. Well played
missed questions on Chanakyan ,which is perhaps a better movie i must say
I think am the only one who is worried about the heroine of the movie Roshini she acted really well .Even there is wrong information about her in google why didn't she get a chance 😰😬 where is she right now?
Where can I get Guna movie with English subtitles. My south Indian brothers, help please.
Vineet Chugh u don't need a sub titles to watch is film . This is a visual art.
It’s currently available in Amazon Prime
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
No guilt..! I feel am in a edu session..! And why does this John Edathattil reminds me of Jack Nicholson? :D Too random eh?
This interview aged well.
Where is the heroine in guna movie??
Guna story inspire by abirami anthathi, writer Balakumaran said that his question and answer section in his pocket novel. Guna was not commercial success that time. But the same theme use kathal konden by the same writer. Balakumaran use the abirami anthathi theme in many of his novels..
kadhal konden writer is selva
He mentioned 'Cho' Ramaswamy. He is a real genius. His market study is amazing...
Make an interview of Indian 1996 with shankar
Guna movie lovers like
Please do one interview with jeyamohan about naan kadavul..
02:50 📝📚👌
I love this movie but I have a question in the story.. when abirami let guna fall from the cliff, SK comes there along with janagaraj. Why does SK wanted to get her signature there in blank paper..so far SK has been a good guardian for roshini..what is the need for SK to show his true color at that time?
He wanted to get sign, so that he can kill her n take away her property since her father also not alive.. Since guna had kidnapped her, that blame will come on him.
Abirami Battar claims that today is Pournami when it is not, because Goddess Abirami said so in the original story. Then the Goddess herself throws her nose ring to the dark sky and shines like a full moon, to honor his devotion. That scene in Guna refers to this in my opinion.. where Guna accepts that its Pournami because Abirami said so,
Balakumaran's presence was totally forgotten !
vijay kumar Not "forgotten." This was about the screenwriring. We did not go into dialogues because this is only about this one facet.
today after watching munjeyellsam boys
Sab john was acted in kuruthipunal
Namaste
