- Nayakan is a 1987 Indian Tamil-language gangster film written and directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan. It is loosely based on the real-life Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay (now Mumbai). The film also stars Saranya Ponvannan in her film debut. Karthika, Nassar, Janagaraj, Delhi Ganesh and Tinnu Anand play significant roles. The soundtrack and the background score of the film, composed by Ilaiyaraaja were critically acclaimed and considered by critics as one of his best works to that point

Nayagan is the best movie in Tamil ever made and the best acting by Kamal, Ilaya Raja sir, PC Sri Ram sir, Maniratnam sir, etc... Everyone has delivered their best....

Thanks for this. For once I’ve understood why Nayagan was so great at that time. I’ve always felt Thalapathy more wholesome. But I get it now how Nayagan totally changed how a could be presented at that era and continue stay so fresh even now.
Thalapathi is Original as it gets and it is plot is derived from vedic literature not Hollywood rip off!
Don't compare Thalapathi☀️ with nayagan which is mere copy rather than inspiration.

I saw this move recently it really showed me why kamal Hassan is a true talent. especially for this film it’s not only a gangster film. but it’s about a man who goes by living with a certain code of morality and ethics. and how he punish the people who abuse the poor and is seen as a form of law and Justice it’s such a great film.

Character themes were done by RD BURMAN in films like aradhana and sholay before ilaiyaraaja. Ilaiyaraaja introduced it to tamil films maybe though.

When Mani sir has Revathy's childhood pics arranged on a mat as her room decor to Ilayaraja sir s haunting background score which drags me down the nostalgia lane to my school days... and Karthik who I was impressed only in this movie never before and never after and then Mohan, whom I couldn't fathom why he soooo famous (bad grammar) but I still loved him in every movie of his and then there is Revathy who spells fun, madness, free spiritedness and more. She gave many a girl an identity to grow up as a self-respecting woman very much capable of thinking for herself yet being so traditional... A 43YO from Austin, TX :)

#AskBR 7G Rainbow Colony - 7G and Pudhupettai are the 2 of my favorite Selvaraghavan movie and I feel only in these two movies the director was able completely execute his vision on screen. While even 7G was about a hero stalking a girl, why was this still enjoyable versus similar movies now are detested pr condemned (rightly so). Was it because the hero gets reformed and responsible in the end? How does a movie tread this thin line between stalking and love and succeed?

Of course we watch :) And especially with a cult classic like Nayakan, where there's so much more that can be spoken about (I'm guessing), 11 minutes just flew by. I wanted to listen to much more on this particular movie. And if BR won't go in-depth with movie analysis, who will?
Also the Real Vardarajan's daughter married a Policeman,so maybe that influenced the decision.

Dear BR, Nayagan is a cult classic which is of no doubt..But I felt the film doesn't need 'Nila adhu vaanathu melay' song at that situation..A female objectifying song at that situation should have been avoided..Can you clarify me whether any reason there behind placing that song??.. Just a doubt

BR - great analysis as usual. Though I love each and every performance of Kamal, but I think the way he expresses anger with his daughter is one of his best. What do you think? I think every department of the film came together like in all great movies. Again he did this when he was 34 or 35. Unbelievable.

Kamal Haasan might be the greatest actor in Indian cinema but there are many actors in the world. Daniel Day Lewis Al Pacino Marlon Brando are the best method actors of all time. They just do limited films but Pacino in 70's and 90's he's the greatest Brando in 50's and 60's. Day Lewis is a greatest method actor ever lived

Lots of logic mistakes, useless songs, no depth in story. It should have been taken in 2 parts.
