Since pc Sreeram sir has been interviewed , the contrast has been doubled up , and the lighting is awesome ♥️♥️
The great thing of Rangan sir's interview is that he allows the interviewee to speak ..unlike many interviews :)
I believe the best photographed film in P C sreeram's career is Thiruda Thiruda. It is kind of an achievement. There is this horse riding chase scene. It always amazes me that PC and Mani manage to get the perspective of somebody who's riding the horse in flawless way, without being shaky or anything. The camera was placed in the level of the person riding the horse and from his viewpoint, this extra wide shot picturizes the chase. We the audience literally feel like we are in the chase, like we are part of it. Can it get more cinematic than that? It involves the viewer a part of the story or its happening and make it an experience.
I used to be surprised when Mani didn't talk much about Thiruda Thiruda but the amount of effort went into making that film is clearly seen in the film. The soundtrack of Rahman - Oh My God. Prashanth and Ananth cuts the bag from Chandralekha's hand infront of that ancient temple and when they turn back, two cops observe them- cops take the bag back and call Chandralekha 'madam' with respect- and the electrifying background theme of Chandralekha plays out. Thiruda Thiruda was almost like an American wild west caper and one of the best capers I have ever seen in Indian movies ( better than Ramu's Kshanakshanam and Daud - both I consider the best ones next to Thiruda Thiruda).
The way PC managed to picturize Rasaathi song was almost like a North Indian painting.
The image quality of the film is much superior to many 4k movies coming now. Ofcourse 35MM is close to 8K but still the technical expertise matters when it comes to delivering the maximum output. ( Long back I heard that Thiruda Thiruda is based on 'Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid' but never watched it because I didn't want to undo the experience of Thiruda Thiruda).
Butch classidy and Sundance kid is nothing like thiruda thiruda .... Thiruda Thiruda is much more entertaining..
For me also Thiruda Thiruda is PC's finest work in terms of Cinematography. I would rank Nayakan for its lighting and awesome camera angles.
Thevar Magan- wow. What a Film !!!
PC had underplayed throughout the film and if you observe the film now, you could see 98% of the film has static camera shots and dynamic moving shots in the film is very less
Also Apoorva Sagodharargal. Aiyoo
I still wonder how he shot that Appu's dwarf character using Cinematography Gimmicks and the final killing of Nagesh by Lions is still a gory and bloody scene to watch..
Along with Thiruda Thiruda, Roja and Dilse, we have got some of the aesthetically shot films in India
Rama Krishnan Santhosh Sivan is another legend. He is the first cinematographer from India to get Asc validation (American society of cinematographers).
Coming to Thevar magan, it had another great director who had a distinct approach to visuals in his films. He is one of the first mainstream filmmakers down south who actually made very realistic, raw looking images in his movies.
Vaishali, thaazhvaram (1990)(A wild west revenge drama), Prayanam, Chamaram, Rathinirvedam, thakara, Paalangal etc are some of his remarkable films.
He is a master in bringing rustic life to the screen. He is very visual but he has his own style. He doesn't believe in using back lights and giving everything a polished, stylized look.
Kamal Haasan was a very old friend of Bharatan. After Thaazhvaram's commercial and critical success (it's a film that used the mega space of cinemascope lense in the right way, like how John Ford, Kurosawa and Sergio Leone used them in The Searchers, Yojimbo and Once upon a time in the west. I can say he was very inspired by them.
As Thevar magan is something of a 'The godfather' kind of a revenge drama set in rural background, Kamal might have thought Bharatan would be the right person for the movie. But during filming process, Kamal clashed with Bharathan many times and Bharathan walked away from the project many times.
But anyway the movie, even though not my favorite, was good for its time. I should also say that it is one of the movies that dated very badly.
That's again a very bad ideological boss..
I amazed at all your facts and knowledge on Cinema, but Criticizing a heart shaking film like Thevar Magan was really a heart breaking statement. Anyhow I appreciate your knowledge and thirst on Cinema and it's profound language..
Feel free to find me on Facebook
Rama Krishnan Lakshmanan
I just said Thevar Magan is not my favorite film of Kamal Haasan. I didn't like that film much. It's too long and boring for me. I am a big Kamal fan and my favorites are Pesum Padam, Micheal Madan Kamarajan, Kuruthi punal, Apoorva sagodarangal, Nayagan, Chaanakyan, Indian etc. I also think he was brilliant in his minutes long guest role in Thappu Thalangal where appears as a old customer of Saritha's character and Sarita asks him to go out because she has changed but refuses saying how his wife hates him and all that. Finally, Rajni comes and takes him in arms and throws him out of the house. It is a very funny scene. Kamal outshined Rajni in that scene. Watch it if possible.
One of master of cinematography. Pc sir. His combo from Mani sir and with debut director of Remo movie the visuals is treat for all movie fans. 🙏
Hats off BR, for this gem.. A man who can easily browbeat with pure technical jargon, almost struggling to communicate with words, what he does with camera. I will remember one thing for life.. 26-27 mins. "I don't want to theorize what I do, cos I still have so much to do". What a beautiful philosophical approach, casually uttered.
Mr.P.c is nowhere close to predictable. The answers were so unconventional , atleast to me and I thoroughly enjoyed his laid back mode of responses and his hesitation to express his frame of thought at the moment he shot those films 😃 super fun it was watching the interview.Legend !!
2:35 Suddenly after that photo, He looks like Pratap pothan..
Kuruthipunal is one of my fav film....
Guru,, of Indian cinematography 📷😍😘,,. Always wanted to join as an assistant to mr.pc Sreeram sir
I tried bro ,humble and respectful person but little bit difficult to join with him, he'll give time for that 2 to 3yrs.
Quite possibly the best interview by FC South.
very few in tamil industry do their work with passion, money is secondary to them. pc sriram, balu mahendra, kamal haasan, dir sridhar, dir mahendran etc to name a few.
PC sir is such pure soul❤️
@25:03 why did you ask me that question :)
BR is the best interviewer/reviewer/critic when it comes to film related subjects.
Does PC Sri Ram speak ?? Woww what a legend!!
It seems PC Sreeram needed cinema, as he said he knew nothing other than movies, as it meant survival. But it turned out to better than that, a stellar career. It is sheer genius that has propelled him to such heights.
With BR, the level goes only higher. Thanks for this!
I grew up watching kamal movies and iam aware of PC Sriram and became of fan PC too... movies like Nayagan, Apoorva sagotharargal, Thevar Magan, Kuruthipunal all took me to a different world...it's a learning for me watching his films...very satisfying interview... happy that the anchor Bharadwaj Rangan asked very very good questions 👏👏👏
35:50 Vera level intimacy with cinematography
Only Art lovers will watch this video completely ..like if Yuh agree ?
Man, This is some intense conversation. kudos.
Happy Birthday P.C.Sreeram sir...
PCS chinna chinna vanna kuyil cinematography is so beautiful and mounaragam is the same. He enriched the beauty in his own way. A CLASSIC CAMERAMAN.
25:22 no one better than Rangan
WOW. I can quite safely say this is by far the best interview I've ever seen from BR. What a pure legend PCS is; an icon of Indian cinematography. I love how raw and honest he is, and completely unpretentious. No airs, no BS. A gem of a interview. Thanks for this!!! 👏
unassuming and nonchalant genius....was great interview sir.... thanks again
Thanks, a lot Rangan sir for bringing this legend in front of the camera. Generally, pc sir does magic behind the camera. This time you did by bringing him in front of camera
Wonderful to get to know their thoughts !! Heard PC sir speak this much for first time !!
BR's interviews are always insightful. Thanks again for making more of an interesting conversation rather than having a set of questions that are asked for the sake of it..
Great show! What a wonderful interview, good one BR
This was such a wow interview. It felt like sitting in your favorite teachers class who didn't particularly enjoy teaching. Yet you were all ears to that teachers session. Engaging...introverted...and free spirited. I tried to imagine a similar interview in a bollywood setting and......(I'd leave it there)
Eccentric and extraordinary and excellent - 3 words to describe PC.
This is what happens when a complete Theorist interviewer tries to make a "Man of Action" condense his actions and Instincts into Patterns and Theory.
Even after all the efforts made by Baradwaj Rangan to find a meaning to Pc Sreeram's visuals, the man just answered in Clint Eastwood's style,
"If you want to shoot, just shoot. Don't think" B|
The beauty of a subject is in the Randomness and Abstractness,
Not the meaning we try to force on it.
Its so brilliant, especially around 16:40 where he talks about Mirage.
Okay, I saw this interview very differently. For one, I never try to impose MY meanings on a creator. They remain mine. 😀 Here, the attempt was to get at what PC is about. Is he like Ravi Varman or Vittorio Storaro, with an idea or color theory behind his work? Or is he a point and shoot guy? Or is it really that he cannot (or maybe resists) putting into words the processes behind his work? My job is to poke and prod and see what happens. Again, I do not try and force-fit interviewees into my paradigms. Of course, my questions are going to sound like ME, but that's inevitable, right? 😀
fyi : When u have to shoot ,shoot. Dont talk " was in Tuco (Eli Wallach) Style not Clint Eastwoods...;-)
I think it's hard to collect info from PC 😂 BR did his best.
@ film companian south
Really a Good one sir.. please continue doing it.
Being an ardent fan of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, I could see some similarities. Both PC and IR don’t want to make a theory out of their work. They don’t want to treat mechanically with some templates. If it “happened”, just enjoy and don’t get into the “How” part.. No wonder both are celebrated to the core in their respective profession
I too had the same thought when people asks how this happens.. Ilayaraja too says "அதுவா அமைஞ்சது"
What excellent journalism. Probing a complex person is not easy. He really researchers and understands their work before questioning.
Once again BR did a great interview..
Intense, genius....lord of lights !
People used to stay he prefers dark, when u watch his movies in TV we can realize the quality
Awesome interview
This guy made a difference for the sake of being different, so he struck up in a zone. God bless him
10:31 .. he almost spoke my childhood 😌😌
Pc sreeram MOST PAID DOP IN INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
First question is hypothetical but, reply from P.C. sir is very hilarious!!
ஒளியின் நாயகனின், மெளனராகம், நம் மனதில்.. எப்போதும், அலைபாயும்.
Br is only person handeled in clean way
Brilliant Cinematographer
Thank u so much rangan for this interview.
mani sir sreeram sir 💕💕💕
Like the 3/4th lightning on the face just like how PC Sreeram lights in the movies.. not sure it was intentional
Dop of this interview should be appreciated... light pattern is exactly like pc sreeram
Ninukori varnam song.. the whole song was shot in a single room, with multiple flashing lights .. Thats when i know this person's name PC.Sreeram.
I hope there's a technical interview with PC Sreeram. As an aspiring cinematographer, would love to know how he achieved the lighting in Agni Natchathiram, the choice of framing subjects on edge during close ups in his new films, the compositions in Geethanjali, film processing etc.
@Akash Akks It’s been a long time since I watched that film. But I thought the experimental cinematography really elevated the film from a simple melodrama to a truly cinematic film.
GOPURA VASALILE and IDHAYATHAI THIRUDAADHE were my favorites. At least these days he learnt how to speak, In his early times he had so much difficulty in communicating. The Godfather of indigeneous cinematography an original creator by any scale.
Pachai niramae pachai niramae
Nayagan I loved pc sir work
You're one of the most amazing cinematographer in the world of cinema!🌹! Every emotions has it's own pace colour and shades and you are skilfully adopting that in your cinematographic ventures! You are beating all the "poona walla's" in your experimental copying of life and its moments! I dont know whether your so called "DIRECTOR'S" are aware of it!🤔! Most probably your answer will be a big NO!😄!! I can distinguish and diagnose it from your basic expressions when and while you are wielding the camera!💪! You are an institute to the" institute born camera wallas with muscle's and attitudes"!! Congratulations & Appreciation's!!
Baddy looking like some villain mafia boss here. Reminds me of Amrish Puri character in thalapathi.
2:05 rangan looks so confused
Sir is very clear..

Why can’t i find one artist/technician like this in Bollywood ?
He doesn like talking abt Remo...🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@ashwinshiva18 according 2 it perspective brother 🤣🤣🤣 plzz mention word "for me" 😅
What to say, if digital is not come few legends are be in industry sure one is PC sir.
You tried your best BR. PCS is quite a difficult man to get info from or get clear ideas from. He just works with his intuition and imaginations. Nothing theoretical or formulaic.
The interview was bit hilarious when you tried your best to get his ideas out for us. But 😜
It's just brilliant the way Bharadwaj managed the interview with pc...
.
PC, is an institution, but a reluctant one to orate when asked.
I feel pc doesn't like authority on all levels. Right from school to now.
What do you guys think? Would love to know
PC sir Cinematography in Pawan Kalyan "Khushi" still looks fresh....It is just magical
PC seems to be a tough nut to crack... :-P
No.. it seems he hates explaining things. I feel he just wants things to be understood and cherished by everyone by themselves.. it's a rare virtue these days because most people like to brag about even the tiniest of things they have done
I think Thiru who was assistant of P.C did the canera work for kuruthipunal.
Yes thiru sir is assistant of PC sir but Not in kuruthi pinnal because kuruthipunal was released 1995 but Magalir Mattum was released 1994 cinematography by thirru
Kuruthipunal vera level movie sir...suppose ippe vanthe irekenu....
❤
"I don't want share my frame with anyone else it's too personal"...no wonder PCs films are cult !!

Nayagan had the best cinematography
Irukku aana illa ..Andha maadiri.. PC pesi irukkaaru aana pesala maadhiriye irukku ...Naan neraya edathula pesi irukkaaru nu thaan solanum .. this interview needs 3 parts actually .. at least 2 parts
Still now no dislikes😇😇😇
With kamal it is kuruthipunal, as technician it is alaipayuthe, with balki it is paa and I guess it must be Remo with Sivakarthikeyan!
Misleading title, he talks so less about Kuruthi Punal
I think agni natchathiram and mouna ragam his best work ❤
•M A N I R A T N A M•
His communication is difficult I don't know how people discuss with this guy
I like nayagan , kuruthipunal , vanam vasapadum , Alaipayuthey You are great cinematographer , but I don't like to watch Agni nakshatharam because of your lighting techniques in the film , it makes me to feel sleepy 😂 it's because of you people call maniratnam "iruttu director" 😜
mani sir ilayaraja pc sriram ar rehman
S. Tirru
Can anyone type his best movies (i dont understand tamil) pls type in English
Mounika Malla nayagan, alaipauthey,ok kanmani, thevar magan, thiruda thiruda..
More recent one is O Kadhal Kanmani and Nayakan is one of his best. He done many hindi movies also like Paa, Cheeni Kum, Pad man.
He is done a project from nayagan,mounaragam,Agni natcha.thram,kuruthippunal,devarmagan,alaipaayudhe,mugavari,thiruda thiruda,yaavarum nalam,paa,I,ok kanmani
all the BS masala actors get all the accolades, instead ppl like him should be celebrated..one of the legend of Indian cinema
Y video lag
I feel like he is going to run out of breath and die. So uncomfortable to listen to.
Mouna ragam
25:00..why did you ask that question
Why PC sreeram talks with little uncomfortablity?
Incoherence suggests inebriation
Seems like he is a great player but a quiet coach.. for him deconstructing is boring
Mr.Rangans doubtful expression throughout the first 10 mins ..... HILARIOUS ... The man called P.C sreeram is an eccentric in many ways just like how the light expresses itself in many different shades ..
