Bowie is the bomb. He was always such a unique artist and individual. I loved his 70s output and this song was no exception. I know Amber will love "Young Americans" due to the wild saxophone. His classic from the late 60s to the 70s include "Changes," "Fame" (co-written and background vocals by John Lennon), "Rebel Rebel" is a great rocker and there's just so much more. Also check out his 1972 album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" typically referred to as just "Ziggy Stardust" from which this song came. You can never go wrong with Bowie. A true original.

I would suggest taking the time to listen to this whole album in one sitting. It is a concept album about an outer space alien who comes down to earth and forms a rock band (Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars), gets caught up in the fame and ego. It is a unique experience and totally worth the time investment. Next song from Bowie for you? Young Americans then TVC15, Panic in Detroit, Jean Genie. So many to choose from! Great reaction y'all!

Knowing how much Amber loves saxophone, Young Americans is a must. He hired multi-Grammy award wining artist David Sanborn to play on the album. One of my favorite Bowie songs.
I've suggested Young Americans before, too! I get so lost in that song, the sax, piano, his voice! One of my favorite songs from my all time favorite singer. ❤

Fun fact, Bowie originally wrote this for the band Mott the Hoople. They instead chose to record All the Young Dudes (written by Bowie) and Bowie recorded Suffrage City
Mott was saved as result of song as band was breaking up. Entire All the Young Dudes album is very good.
Bowie's lyrics are often left open for interpretation. He incorporated techniques used by poets, such as cutting up sentences and words and rearranging them. A beautiful example of this is the song "Quicksand".
I love Bowie. When his albums first started rolling out, I would wonder about each one, "What is he going to sound like this time?" Each album was so different from one another! I like so much, but a few good ones for a nice range is, "Rosalyn, "Jean Genie," "Oh You Pretty Things," "Ashes To Ashes," and "Breaking Glass," "Rebel Rebel," "Life On Mars?" and "Diamond Dogs."
One I really like is "John, I'm Only Dancing"
Bowie changed my life more than any other person on this earth. He taught me it was okay to be different.
Bowie was a trailblazer and unlike anyone else out there. The more you listen, the more you understand. Hearing this live was amazing. He changed his music like some people change clothes. Maybe it's time to move into the '80's with "Let's Dance"/ China Girl.
The one Artist I regret never seeing live in concert. You never know how long we'll have these Treasures.
Stevie Ray Vaughan played guitar on that album with those tasty blues guitar licks! “Let’s Dance” is a CLASSIC!
I had tickets to see him in Salzburg, Austria in 2004. He pulled a muscle in his shoulder and cancelled his two Austrian concerts that week, I was SO BUMMED. It was his Reality Tour.
It was a bucket list concert for me. I never got to see him except the live performance on the Today Show plaza-we recorded that on a VHS tape, we didn’t have YT back then 😢
This song is all Mick Ronson, very under rated guitarist, who died in 93 at only 46. He played with it seemed like everyone at some point.
Moonage Daydream and Ronson on lead guitar. Heaven....

Wonderful musician, arranger and a guitarist with feel. Sadly missed.
Ronson was the bandleader. Did a lot of the arrangements. Was a huge part of the albums in this era of Bowie.
@@richardmather1906 I followed him through his work with Ian Hunter. Rated his solo work highly - the release of his "Just Like This" album years after his demise was a wonderful addition to his output.
No 70's Houseparty would be complete without this track.

One of the best concerts I ever saw (that didn't involve Rush). Bowie was a brilliant showman as well as a fantastic singer and songwriter.
Amber has the right idea. The Ziggy Stardust album is one of a handful of albums that really need to be listened to from start to finish. ✌️🤘💀✌️

I hope you do "Heroes" at some point. IT's such an uplitfting song. A true anthem. Or if you want to see his darker side, try "I'm Afraid of Americans". And also... add "Labyrinth" to your movie list. David Bowie is one of the lead actors.

Heroes, a song he wrote in West Berlin in the 70s. Then you listen to it and it doesn't sound 70s, it exists in its own time.
“I’m Afraid Of Americans” is a fantastic team-up with Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. It’s a great song.
Bowie was such a great singer and multifaceted entertainer. His music evolved so much over the years. His last album 'Black Star' was very strange and different from his usual pop or rock genre. When I first heard the album I did not care for it, but it grew on me after awhile. RIP David.

Modern Love, Let’s Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, etc. He has so many.
The mistake that’s easy to make hearing things for the first time is to search for a reference or genre or style to grab onto with Bowie that’s normally always impossible, that said this track is very glam rock .

Bowie turned people on to a few artists that influenced him. One of those I'd like to introduce you guys to is Lou Reed. It's his song Perfect day but a particular version was released for charity. So if you search Perfect day various artists.
Think along the lines of 'We are the world' and 'Do they know it's Christmas'. You'll now appreciate how many of the artists you now know. It will Also open the door to Lou Reed - walk on the wild side, Satellite of love Enjoy! 🙂

I highly recommend his Christmas duet with Bing Crosby, "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy." A classic from five years after he recorded this 1972 banger!

LOVE BOWIE....he changes every album of course. Rebel Rebel is a lot like this one. A deep cut on this album (Ziggy) is "Rock N Roll Suicide" which is FIRE!

One of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time, and for me, the Gold Standard for many many years. Every new album had to compare favorably to "Ziggy" or it just wasn't worth my time.
Since you just did SRV, then you have to react to Bowie's "Let's Dance" (80's) with very young SRV on guitar.
My first fan obsession is Bowie...I purchased every album I could get my hands on and bought books and magazines, recorded interviews and videos. If you liked Golden Years you will like Young Americans.
If you don't like a particular song by David, just find another one, it'll be different style lol. He reinvented his styles multiple times. Legend

David Bowie Live in Philadelphia. Period! Saw him numerous times. Madison Square Garden for The Diamond Dogs Tour. Truly amazing and so many other tours. I was devastated when he passed away...
I bought this album when it first came out. Great concept album. Some songs and even artists sometimes require multiple listens to appreciate and when you do they become your favorite. For example when I first heard Jethro Tull I didn’t get them. Became one of my favorites.
"Heroes", "Young Americans" and "Quicksand" are my favorites.

I would love to see you two do a back to back reaction of the song China Girl written by David Bowie and his friend from way back, Iggy Pop. First, react to Iggy Pop's version which is actually the original version and has a rock edge to it, then listen to Bowie's version which has a dance vibe to it and was a HUGE hit back in the day. I think it would be fun to see your take on the two different interpretations of China Girl by the co-writers and good friends.
I heard the reason Bowie released this as a single was to help Iggy who was in a bad financial situation.
@@victorbortolussi2964 I'm just glad that Iggy cleaned himself up and managed to find a bit of commercial success himself. With all of the shit he put his body through it's amazing that he lived to see 30 let alone 75 like he is now.

J, I really respect that you were honest about not feeling it half way through. So many will just automatically 'love it' so no one gets their feelings hurt. Not everything is a masterpiece. Even the Beatle pumped out an occasional clunker. You are loved and you are blessed.
David Bowie was a wonderful, creative, and talented artist. He had no ego, and was totally approachable. You could approach him as a total stranger and hold a full blown conversation just like that. He was a lovely chap. Throughout the 70's he changed like the chameleon to different styles and looks that matched his music. I grew up listening to Bowie, and his songs certainly influenced me. In particular the wide variety of sounds and differing styles of songs. David was so masterful at creating such wonderful songs. So very talented.

Went to see The Stones and Santana at the Silverdome sometime in the early "80's (I think) and this was one of the songs played during the break between bands. The crowd talking noise was very loud until the song was near the end... then a second of silence and 70,000 people screamed along with Bowie, 'Wham Baam, Thank You, Ma'am'!! So loud! It was amazing.

Someday find the time for yourselves to listen to the whole album, but between now and then listen to the next and final track on the album, Rock & Roll Suicide. The title sounds a little grim, but the lyrics are among the best ever, the music is great, and the whole song finishes in a very generous and supportive outpouring of emotion.

If you get the time (yes, I know you're parents and there's never enough time) give the entire album a listen. It's not a 'concept album" per se, but all the songs play out the story of Ziggy Stardust. Great, great album!

Great reaction! This has always been a fun favorite and a genuine rocker. I would recommend you listen to “Heroes” from 1977, “Fashion” from 1980, “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)” from 1982, and either “Let’s Dance” or “China Girl” from 1983.
Don't think you've done anything by Joan Armatrading yet. I believe she's from the 70s and was more popular in UK than US, but she's definitely worth a try for Female Fridays. An often overlooked gem with many superb songs: "The Weakness in Me", "Me, Myself, I", "Drop the Pilot" and many more. I really hope you give her a try.

I've been into early punk rock since the mid 70s. This is when he used to travel around with the Iggy Pop. Both of them were icons of punk rock back when it was just starting out great reaction. It's about time you guys did this song

I have loved Bowie since my teenage years and my much younger sister (19 years age difference) kinda got raised by me on Bowie as well, she even got a Bowie tattoo now. This song has always been the one we're jamming out to the most, one of our very favorites.

My favs from the Ziggy Stardust albums are Soul Love and Rock n Roll Suicide, but any pick from that album works. Nice reaction. It would be interesting to hear like a compilation of like one hit from each of his albums from oldest to newest to see how amazingly his sound & vibe changed through the decades.
I love that you are both loving David Bowie as much as I did when this album was first released I lived my life through this album and to tell you how much I listened to it would be insane. Bowie was my main man and when you listened to Ziggy Stardust he took you to another world that you could envisage through the lyrics of his songs. Like '' Five Years'' depicting armagedon '' Starman '' connecting with another life in this universe '' Ziggy Stardust '' the rise and fall of an iconic pop idol. This album was amazing then as it is to this day and I still listen to this album at least once a month

As '70's teenagers in NZ, this era of Bowie had us dancing many nights in someones basement, at the beach all through summer. Headbanging music.

You need to listen to the album as a whole, a concept album and one of the best rock albums ever. Rock 'n' Roll Suicide is a killer ending, the scream at the end when he is telling the people who are outcasts who think that they don't belong that they are not alone will send chills down your spine. David Bowie was a true rock genius.

Genius! Hearing this song was a seminal moment for me. There was a great rock station in the area and they played this song. I had never heard anything like it. I was absolutely mesmerized. They mentioned that the album was available at a certain record store. I just happened be on vacation that day and immediately got in the car and went and bought The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It was just the beginning. I went down the David Bowie rabbit hole.
Every song on that album is great and I've got that poster hanging up in my room as you know David Bowie is my favorite artist. My favorite song on the album is Rock and Roll Suicide.

Another great glam rock song from this same year (also written by David Bowie) is "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople. Bowie gave this song to them to keep them from breaking up, and it wound up being their best-known song.
