The team has great quality and they work well together but top spot is a bit of a reach. Top 4 would be the real achievement. The ref was bad but it was a MasterClass from Emery and the game was won before kick off.
Arteta has to calm down on the line because players will follow his reaction and this happened, you needed him on the line but he could not influence the team because he was in the stands, the second mistake was allowing Villa to kick towards the Holte End first half and because of the way they played against Man City they did not have the legs to repeat it so they were always going to go hard for 20 minutes and after they scored they dropped into a defensive shape as there was no way that they could play football against Arsenal on that day. They were willing to let Arsenal have the majority of the ball.
Second half the substitution he made was tactical by stopping the flow of the game because he knew Arsenal would be strong and would press hard so stopping the flow was key.
The other big issue was on Saturday the only time we played out from the back was for the goal and after that Villa kicked long taking out the Arsenal midfield.
The other big issue was when Arsenal did have the chance they did not take them. You need a striker.
I know on the eye Arsenal played well but there was no way Villa were going toe to toe, and finally people have not caught on that Emery changes his tactics for each team but keeps his defensive line strong when they don’t have to ball.
It did not help with AFTV as the players were shown that clip from Ty last season and has been doing the rounds on Villa Twitter

Both VIlla and Newcastle have really strong backbones to their 11, Pope, Trip, Botman, Dan Byrne, Schur Guimaraes and Joelinton is a really strong group of lads for any club. VIlla have Martinez, Konsa, McGinn, Douglas Luiz and you could even include Moreno. I think many clubs player for player may be on paper a better outfit than both Newcastle and Villa, but what is absolutely vital is that the backbone of a side is solid. When you look at sides that are underachieving, Chelsea and Man Utd i will use as an example. Man Utd have Maguire, Mctominay, Bruno and Rashford as the foundation to their squad, yes you could include Varane but he is in my opinion too injury prone to be included. Chelsea on the other hand in my opinion don't actually have any structured backbone to their squad. The sheer amount of new players for me shows that the one thing Chelsea haven't got is that regular 6 or 7 names playing week in week out and providing Chelsea with the leadership side of the game.

Mid-sized European clubs let him play whatever football he wants, as long as he delivers results and that's why he's been better at your Sevillas, Villareals and Aston Villas, than at Arsenal or PSG - Emery is not perfect and sometimes players just don't suit him and at big clubs that's pretty much unacceptable.
