Plant stories ep 2 - a trip to the nursery, hoya pests, building my 2nd IKEA greenhouse cabinet!

- A relaxing weekend in my life with plants 🌱 I visited my local nursery to find some cute plant pots and check out what they had; looking at plants is so relaxing and a nice break from real life, even if I don't end up bringing any home.
My favorite hoya new guinea ghost also got flat mites! Now I have to treat it for the next 6 weeks... 🥲
I also finally get around to building my second IKEA greenhouse cabinet. I already had a RUDSTA that I got secondhand, but really wanted a second one to put my smaller props and babies in. When my local IKEA finally had them in stock I definitely made sure to go out and grab one! My greenhouse setup isn't anything fancy; in fact, it's probably super simple and maybe even a little bit too DIY haha! But hey, it works, it looks fine to me, and the plants are okay in it, so that's all that matters 🥰 Anywho, I hope you guys enjoy this video and if you did, please feel free to give this a like and maybe subscribe? 😉 Also!! if you have any comments or suggestions for me, feel free to leave them below! Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Rotating with azmax and captain jacks dead bug brew- work really well for mites too! Thats how I was able to irradiate mine.
I also did one with DE on it for a week and it worked really well!
You should be wear a mask when treating too!! ❤️ especially with the sulfur treatment.
Yeah, I didn't have a mask handy and was hit by rotten egg fumes 😷 I prepared the suspension a couple days ago so thankfully no powder flew into the air, but anytime I open up the tub to make a fresh batch I make sure to have a mask on!
In Canada, systemic pesticides like Capt Jack's and Azamax are very hard to find, and practically illegal unfortunately. 🥲 So for most people, we can only get our hands on them if we happen to have a secret source lol
How did you apply the DE?
The cabinets look great side by side! Can’t wait to see the plants on the new shelves! So exciting. Nice and chill works for me most of the time😅.
Hehehe yay I'm glad you enjoyed this then! And yes, I love the way the new cabinets look together! I just put up the new shelves today too, I can't wait to share them in a video!
This is my ideal plant content, so cozy and calming, and just long enough that I can sit down and get comfy to watch it without it feeling like a huge commitment. I would love to see some shots through your window when it snows, so I can enjoy winter weather vicariously through you! (I'm in BC and you know what the winters are like)
Hehehe oh there will be many wintry shots for sure! The winters here last so long 😂🥶 I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! I loved making it ❤️
Hi, it looks like 18.38 on the top left. Thank you so much. One I haven’t seen before.
@@kathleenbusleta6584 ohhh!! yes that's a huperzia goebelii! Sometimes also called a lycopodium goebelii 😊 It's a very cool plant, it existed during prehistoric times I think, but it needs lots of humidity and air circulation
Another great video!! Love how your cabinets look in the alcove. Perfect fit!! Thanks for taking us along 🥰
Thanks so much! I was amazed at how perfectly they fit, it was meant to be! Thank you for watching 🥰
Andy is very bossy! That nursery has some great supplies! The green pump sprayer is way cuter than any other sprayer! I always let my kids assemble things from Ikea. The instructions are just like Legos, no words! The magnetic spice shelves are a great idea! Your cabinets look like art work!
Hehe he sure is bossy! Hehe you're right, IKEA furniture is pretty easy to assemble for the most part! Thank you for watching! 🥰
the fact that you grow grass for your cats is literally SO CUTE!!! i love seeing andy and nico what lovely little lads 🥰
Hahahaha they are my fur children!! Hehehe in the summertime I grow catnip for them outside, too. It's so fresh, they love it! 😁

Your burle marx variegated is another level variegation👀🧐 omg💚
Thank you so much!!! Burle marx is so underrated imo, idk why it doesn't get more love! It's definitely a fave of mine in my collection 🥰
Hi :) maybe someone commented on that already, barrina t5 are quite weak lights, so you might not need to dim those :)
Omg i miss ur girla hope you are well i love ur content i hope u put content frequentlly and 5hat ur channel grow more ❤️❤️❤️💚💚💚💚
Thank you so much! I really enjoy making these videos so it would be awesome to have more people to share them with! 🥰
I recently tried the cat grass trick with my cat too because he's been trying to munch on my plants! It's only been a week but so far so good! He hasn't shown any interest in my plants ever since I gave him access to his own pot of cat grass. Hopefully it stays that way!!!
The cat grass trick totally works! I think cats are more drawn to it instinctively because that’s what they munch on in the wild to aid their digestion. So given the choice, I think they’ll always prefer grass over houseplants, unless they’re asshole cats because let’s face it, there will always be a few of those around the world hahaha
The two rudsta looks sooo good I have one I haven’t even put up!! Smfh and I need to so bad. Wahoo and I got the same lights, I haven’t got them I’m glad you like them. Your plants going going to loveeeee it!!! Can you do a video on care of Monstera obliqua Peru?? I just got one. Hoyas/Philo majestic/ Thai con/albo also would he great. Just throwing out ideas. Ur my fav plantuber!!
Thanks so much!!! Yeah I can try and do some care videos down the road hehe I don't have an obliqua (yet) though! Maybe someday!
I absolutely love the Rudsta and Barrina T5's are my all time fave lights, I've been using them for years now!
@@HerPlantStories I just got a obliqua single leaf for a great price on Etsy. Like I couldn’t believe it. Plant prices are going downnnm right now!
About the barrina lights what color do you have? I know there’s a yellow or pink yellow or something. Can you let me know I don’t know which to order. 🙏🏻 thank you!!!
Hi.👋 😱 I would of ask my hubby to put that cabinet together. I luv all ur plts I come to learn and copy 😂 I Live in New York City in a brownstone 4th flr back of the building so I think my window is a north west😢 lost a lot of plans last winter ❄️ am a little skeptically caused I want rare plants😏just lv that Plant nursery you went to
Thks 4 the VD nyc👒🧤🪴🇹🇹 p.s. on 2 ur next VD
In my old place I only had North facing windows too, so it was also a challenge! I relied mostly on grow lights 😁
Thank u 🙏
Ooh on Oct 1,2 Ecuagenera is coming to NY maybe I get one plt which one do you think I can get I should get ? because I don’t have a IKEA cabinet
Hi there! Was just going through your videos and was wondering where you get your trellis' from, they're so cute!! Thanks!
I love your cabinet just just motivated me out of my depression to work on it!! Can you share the exact link of the same Clear suction cup shelves. I love and want that exact size! Tysm!
I know how hard it can be to do anything once depression hits, so I'm so glad to hear that video motivated you! The finished project will be so worth it ❤️
I have all the products linked on my Amazon storefront here: www.amazon.ca/shop/herplantstories
The exact link to the shelves is here: (I'm assuming you meant the acrylic shelf?) amzn.to/3DI2UnD
Love this so much! 💕 So sorry if I missed you saying this, but did you weather strip along the bottom of the doors as well somehow? Also how has the electrical tape held up? Thanks so much! 🌿💚
I also just built my cabinet today!
and it's also a rudsta!
cabinet buddies!!! 🥳 Did you end up drilling any holes in yours? Lol my build is so DIY but it works 😂
@@HerPlantStories nope, not yet - i just got it today so i also bought the IKEA light strip instead of the more "professional" ones (i'll probably get them eventually but I just wanted to have something in the interim cause i really wanted to move my plants into it ASAP) - and thankfully - that light has such a narrow plug that it just goes through the tiny hole at the top left corner of the cabinet without a problem!
there's a lot of mods i still need to do (weather-proofing or whatever you call it to lock humidity in, fans, magnetic shelves etc.)
but it's already looking so nice just with a single light...
I really want to avoid drilling since that means I'll have to call a handyman (since i can't do it myself and don't have the tools either), but i'm not sure how i'm gonna get the fan cables to go through...
@@HerPlantStories can you link to the products you used? e.g. the acrylic shelves for example? do they come with adhesive or did you get it separately?
and maybe a link to the electric tape too, and the weather strip you used for the doors? i'm also not sure what thickness/width for these i'm supposed to get?
Omg all the pretty pots!!! I can’t find one with good pieces! I’ll pay if it’s worth it some places are just ridiculous. I absolutely LOVE terracotta it’s all I use! EXCEPT with my hydro I nee catch pots I wish I could use terracotta as them. Anyways I’m so happen u uploaded! I love ur videos!! Your voice is soo soothing and your just good vibes so relaxing.
Btw I got this pop ups green house tent on Amazon for $20 it’s the best Thing ever u quarantine every new plant!! Idc where it’s from I do it with everyone and trust me it works! Check ur out! It’s so convenient for so many things
I agree, some pots are so crazy expensive! My most pricey ones are handmade one of a kind pieces by some of my fave pottery artists, though, and those ones I am willing to spend money on because I know it took a lot of time and effort to make, and I value that! Storebought pots are mass produced so i dont really want to spend too much on those.
Thank you so much for your kind words, too! 🥰
hehe, I haven't shown them yet but I actually have 2 greenhouses in my basement for quarantines and such!! Maybe I'll show them in future videos!
@@HerPlantStories I would LOVE TO SEE YOIE BASEMENT! We would all love to see everything! I really love your channel
What are the two plants in the upper left corner of your new cabinet? Love them and your videos!
The way you arranged your plants is not only practical but also aesthetic, and I love it 👍🙂
By the way, your epipremnum ‘Manjula’ is so gorgeous, one of
the best I have seen in a video 👏👏👏
Not sure if I missed it, but you do not have or need a fan running inside the cabinet ? I don’t know if you like the look of peg board, but I think Ikea has cool design (I think it is Skadis product line). Magnetic hooks can also be used if you want to hang something or some small plant pots. Hehe.
Thank you!! I try my best to display plants beautifully while still keeping their needs in mind 😉
I don't have fans in my Rudsta! So far I have found that I don't need them because the humidity does not get extremely high. If my humidity reached 90% then I would feel the need for fans, or if my cabinet primarily housed anthuriums then I would also install fans because they are SUPER prone to fungal issues 🤦🏻♀️
So far, my cabs have been fine without a fan and I think it's due to a combo of having humidity that is not too high, and opening the cabinet every other day to check on the plants.
And also the species of plants that I have are not as prone to fungal issues, thankfully!
I have seen the Skadis peg board, I have one in our main computer office upstairs! I like them, but I think I like having the magnetic shelves more and I don't want to install grids/pegboards on the glass.... it could work for someone else. though.
And funny you mentioned magnetic hooks because I have some on order from Amazon as we speak! Lol
I used electrical tape on the hinge of my cabinet too! I hadn’t heard of anyone else doing this. I tried so many different shapes of weatherstripping but they didn’t work for me.
I thought I was the only one too!! Hahaha! It's good to be able to think out of the box though, imo! We find what works for us 😉
Great video, loved the format of this video too. Thanks for sharing your plant care tips and the cabinet making was the best I've seen. Do you grow your cat grass? whenever I do it , they just dry and dye in a month. How do you do it?
I do grow my cat grass! I've found that they dont last very long but it could also be because I tend to forget to water them 🥲 I noticed that grass roots like crazy and they get thirsty very quickly, so I think I would have to keep up-potting it and watering regularly to keep it alive!
Nice video Bekka! Don't mind me asking, but what is that font that you use for your little popups in the video like the one you used for the Ikebana
Hey! Where did you purchase the magnetic shelves?
I wish clear pots were more available in the US. All the ones online are expensive or a very flimsy material.
Just go online to Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond and search for “clear storage”. You can then burn holes in the bottoms of most with a soldering iron! 💚
@@monsteraetc Yes this is a great idea! This is also what I do when I need a pot size that is hard to find. I also save old plastic cups and takeout containers for this reason.
A heated up old screwdriver does the trick too!
what about orchid shops? You might be able to find some there! Otherwise, it's quite easy to make your own clear pots, too! I save old takeout containers and boba cups and just use a heated up screwdriver to poke some holes into them 😁
How did I not know that you have a CZcams channel??? I’ve been following you on Instagram and I’m so happy this video popped up on my timeline. I am now a subscriber 💚💚💚
Hehehe, my channel is still really new! I'm still learning my way around CZcams 😅 Thank you so much for subscribing!!!
Be careful of those Barrina lights. There are multiple warnings on the internet concerning improper wiring and fires.
Thanks for the warning. I am using the original wires and cables, and not overloading them by connecting too many. As much as possible I try to follow instructions and code, and that's the most I can do on my end 😅 Hopefully no fires here
im in winnipeg too! i must know what nursery this was at bc that monstera was GORG
It's at Shelmerdine's on Roblin!
@@HerPlantStories i will check that out next week for sure!!!
What lights do you use for your ikea cabinet???
Hi! I am using 2ft Barrina T5 grow lights in yellow! I have them linked in my Amazon page www.amazon.ca/shop/herplantstories 😁
Have you checked your other Hoyas as well?? I check and a couple that haven’t been growing definitely have them 😩 hoping my others are safe but I’m worried about how they spread!
I haven't but I know I should... I think I'm just scared if what I might find! 🥲
@@HerPlantStories I know!! I really only found them on plants that were dropping new growth or randomly never grew/stopped growing so thats good. I am paranoid I missed them somewhere but hopefully not!
Are you going to add fans to your cabinets cause of fungal issues/mold?
if I start noticing fungal issues then I may add fans down the road! I have had my first cabinet for a few months though without a fan and have not had fungal issues. I also have plastic greenhouses in my basement without fans and no fungal issues either. I open up my cabinets almost daily to check on the plants anyway so they get some airflow then haha!
And my cabinets never go above 75% so it never actually gets too humid that water pools on the leaves...so no fungal issues so far in the last year and a bit. If i notice fungal problems starting or if I decide to devote and entire cabinet to anthuriums (which are prone to fungal) then I will add fans for sure!
i miss your videos so much.... T-T
What product did you use to fine your Flat Mites?
find them? I used a microscope hooked up to my phone to confirm, but I noticed the signs based on some of the symptoms on my plant! I did an Instagram stories about how I ID the symptoms recently, it is saved as a highlight on my profile if you want to check it out! 😊
What X Magnifying glass do you use to see the mites?
I'm using dental loupes. My regular job is as a dental hygienist so those loupes were custom made for me.
You can use jeweler's loupes as well, but these mites are incredibly microscopic and will not be visible even with loupes. I just used mine for the headlight feature. In order to really see the mites, you will need a microscope. Amazon has a lot of good wireless digital microscopes that can hook up to your phone 😁
I noticed you had a 3 in 1 spray on the counter when you were treating your ngg. Doesn’t that have sulphur in it? I’m asking because I have that spray and I’d like to use it on a new Hoya
it does! I used it as well. It might have been overkill but I used both lol! I sprayed with 3 in 1 first, then dipped my toothbrush in the sulphur powder suspension to get the stems and petioles
@@HerPlantStories thank you for the information. Nice video!
@@margaretcalifano1617 you're welcome, and thank you!
Can you please tell me what type of plant that is on our left that has an evergreen leaf?
Sure, could you give me a time stamp so I can know exactly which plant you're talking about? 😁
@@HerPlantStories hi, it looks like 18.38 on the top left.
What mic do u use?
Shure MV88+ . It's great for narration and when I am filming handheld, but a bit tougher to capture speech when I am filming third person so I was thinking of getting a lapel mic for that eventually
@@HerPlantStories ah brill thanku
