  • This is sort of a continuation from last weeks video and finally getting a proper area setup for my cacti, succulents and hoyas. Also got a chance to do a little tour of my favourite local nursery (@vandulafarms) to shop for new plants to fill up the cabinet and unboxed some of their new cacti shipment!

    For thinner metal it helps if you lay a piece of wood under the piece you are cutting. That way the metal doesn’t push down and you can get a cleaner cut. The wood won’t damage the saw and when you see wood shavings you know you’re all the way through the metal. 😊

      Omg that is sooo smart!! Thank you so much for the recommendation! I think I’m going to drill a second hole at the bottom of the cabinet so hopefully this one won’t be as much of a disaster 😂

  • @Kellsian
    @Kellsian Před 3 lety +29

    I used the Rudsta for my Alocasia collection. Instead of drilling a hole, I fed the cords of my fan and lights (same as yours) through the sides where the pegs are that hold in the glass frame to the top. There’s plenty of space there and you can’t see the cords practically at all since they stretch along the ceiling.
    Thanks for the video!

    When drilling a hole with a hole saw you want to go in at an angle on one side then as the blade begins to cut you slowly straighten up. This prevents the sliding all over when just trying to go straight in. I know this comment is way late but you know, better late than never! 😂

    So excited to see a video for the rudsta, I am thinking of also getting this model for my plants.
    It looks like you may have been trying to drill the hole in the back with the unscrew setting vs the screw in one. looked like it was spinning in the wrong direction and when you showed the drill the arrow for screwing in was pushed out which means it was set to unscrew. That may be why it was so worn down and took so long to cut through.

    Thanks for the Rudsta set up - I really want one set up but for aroids. I was thinking of a terrarium for my cacti - need to think about it As for the nursery, that tour was absolutely wonderful! And you're a super smooth operator, bringing doughnuts......👏👏👏

    you can spray a constant stream of water on it as you cut to keep it cool and keep it from smoking. that hole you cut will clean up quite a bit with a file or a dremmel, but a hand file will work. your dog is adorable!

    Did you add a fan to your Rusdta cabinet? I don’t have a humidifier in mine and I’m trying to figure out if I’m going wrong by not adding a fan 🤣

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  Před 2 lety

      No fan in my Rudsta! My goal in the rudsta is to maintain heat more than humidity since I keep 99% of my cacti in there! I’d say if you plan to completely weather seal it and pack with lots of plants (not cacti) then running a fan may be beneficial as ive seen some rigged rudstas maintain a 99% humidity level which can lead to some fungal issues down the road!

    Your new babies are adorable!! The “Wandering Jew” (I’m Jewish so I’m allowed to call it that!) is a Tradescantia. I have a Tradescantia Zebrina which has more purple then yours.

      Luckily the cabinet is up against the wall so it's not much of an issue, but I think one day I'll definitely get it cleaned up because I can't stop thinking about how ugly it looks in the back 😂 Also- I ended up buying a Tradescantia Quicksilver after making this video and am in LOVE! Not sure, but this is probably a holesaw for wood. Use one meant for metal and you should be good. Use more coolant (oil or water) if it's smoking like that it's probably too hot. Also as other people stated: go in at a slight angle and do it on a flat surface with a backing you can drill into.
