    I had a Distortion in the early '80s. Switched to an Arion SDI-1 in '85 and never looked back. It's like the Boss Distortion on steroids. Thick distortion and tone. Can be adjusted to any need. I still have one today. Im on my 2nd 1. The first one I gave to the other guitarist in my band.

    I am a fan of the DS-1 and actually have the black BOSS 40th Anniversary edition pedal. I love the sustain it has but the with the distortion knob, you can go from cool bluesy tones to rock distortion, to metal distortion, to a mild fuzz tone, all in one pedal. Great demo Pete!!!

  • @timwhite5562
    @timwhite5562 Před rokem +2

    For players who want to start getting into modifying pedals; The DS-1 is probably the best pedal to start with. There are countless different mods. I've been building amps and pedals for 15+ years now. I started modding Tube Screamers, Dyna Comps, muffs, I didn't even own a DS1 until a decade ago. I was looking at a schematic and it immediately jumped out to me how many things I could do. Various overdrive sounds, unique fuzz, colored distortions, etc.
    The other Boss pedal that are great for modding are Bluesdrivers. Even though it only had a single tone control, they actually have a 3- band tone stack in the circuit, it's just that it's fixed with a resistor instead of a pot. You can swap out the tone control for a stacked pot so you can adjust the EQ, or just revoice it by using different resistor values. It's similar to the Fender Deluxe Reverb amps. They only have Treble and Bass controls, but there is a middle stack they fix with a 6.7k resistor. If you use a higher value resistor, it will increase the midrange, a lower one will scoop it. I always replace the 6.7K on the normal channel on the reissue for an 8K because it's actually what the vintage ones had, I don't know why they use the lower one, it's too scooped. On the other channel I add a trim pot to act as a Middle control, but before that I would just swap it for a 15K and it would bring it to a more of a Tweed tone. Some I would just replace the whole EQ for the Plexi tone stack.

    #Analogman has a series of cools mods for the BOSS DS1 Distortion. A Super, Pro, and Midrange Mod upgrades to Hi-Fi components, a new OpAmp Chip from JRC (think TS808), and a New MidRange Knob. The Stock DS-1 has a buzzy tone, with shrill highs. The JRC OpAmp makes the overdriven and distorted dirty tone, sound warmer and smoother. In 2017-18, there was a 40th Anniversary Limited Edition DS-1 Distortion released in Black/Gold that can includes these #Analogman Mods.
    The BOSS DS-1 Distortion (Orange) shouldn't be confused with the SD-1 Super OverDrive (Yellow). The DS-1 has scooped mids, unlike the Ibanez TS-9 TubeScreamer that has a midrange hump. So the Midrange mod allows guitar players to dial in more mids. The DS-1 has much more gain on tap than a #TubeScreamer for a more modern hard rock/metal sound. It can push a vintage #Fender Amp with weak mids into more of British Amp sound, like a Marshall.

    A DS-1 into a clean(ish) Marshall, along with a Strat, is what Gary Moore used during his Corridors of Power/Run For Cover era, which in turn John Norum emulated on the first three Europe albums (including The Final Countdown ofc). A little known fact: Boss designed their classic pedals using the Roland JC120 as their shop test amp. I don't know how that helps anybody except as a starting point to choose the right amp for them to sound their best. I found the perfect match with the clean channel of a Peavey Classic 50 half-stack and Marshall 2203's as well. I haven't gotten very good results through most Fender amps, too glassy and scooped. Like all pedals, it all depends on how it gels with the amp.

    Well, it’s taken me awhile, but I’ve finally figured it out:
    It’s not the pedals. It’s just Pete.
    Feels good to realize this pedal isn’t that long-sought, magical, missing ingredient in my signal chain.
    My wallet is safe.
    My time is much better spent just playing.
    I am at peace.

    this pedal delivers and is a great alternate on my board. My primary is the Mojo with a AC to add a nice push. the DS 1w is a great break away and is totally the best I have owned. It it kinda tight with a nice openness to it if that makes sense

    I’ve always liked the DS-1 for legato runs. Think Alex Lifeson’s solo on “YYZ”. He didn’t use a DS-1, obviously, but it gives me that vibe. It’s not a particularly pleasing tone in and of itself, but it works for that. And speaking of legato, it obviously worked well for one of the masters of legato (Satch).

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  Před rokem +3

      Yeah, I know what you mean, because it can sort of smear the initial attack it could be good for legato

    • @kalebaldwin5398
      @kalebaldwin5398 Před rokem +1

      @@PeteThorn It seems to like a softer attack (legato, fingerpicking, etc.), at least in my experience. Pick hard and it collapses…which can either be a problem or really cool sound, depending on what the song needs. And if you run it on low voltage, it sounds even nastier and fuzzier.

    • @eoinjennings519
      @eoinjennings519 Před rokem

      Funny you should mention I have been using it playing Rush though he didn’t go heavy on the overdrive he did use Distrotion+ pedal in the early days and you can get a bit of fuzziness out of this you don’t get with a pure od that works well

    • @kalebaldwin5398
      @kalebaldwin5398 Před rokem +1

      @@eoinjennings519 I think he used the Distortion+ mostly on leads, in the period between Hemispheres and Signals. His Hiwatts were modded for more gain, AFIAK. But those Marshall 4140 combos he used in the 80s have a rather harsh, almost fuzzy tone when distorted, and I think the DS-1 does a pretty decent job mimicking that sound. And really, his tone - like a lot of our favorite recorded guitar tones, honestly - was kind of crappy on its own. But put it in the full band context, and it’s amazing. It had to blend well with Geddy’s bass and all the synths. Filling out the sound without getting in the way of the other instruments is not easy.
