How to Pray a Novena (the Right Way)

- A novena is a special way to pray for a specific intention or grace, such as for a loved one, healing, forgiveness, clarity with a big decision, etc. However, they aren’t magic. We can’t assume that God will answer our prayers immediately or in the exact why we ask him to answer them.
Today, Fr. Mike shares with us the right way to approach praying a novena-whether it be a traditional nine day novena, a 33 day Consecration, or even a 54 day Rosary Novena-and what pitfalls to avoid when praying this way.

I have a cool story about a novena. I was praying the St Therese novena for my husband to come home. Last year I said the same novena, for the same intention, and I felt very loved and guided by St. Therese, but I also felt extremely consumed by fear and scruples about saying it wrongly, and my mental health devolved during that time into a psychotic break.
I couldn't bear the loss of my husband and my whole family of in laws who I love very much, and I was also facing homelessness, since I have autism and struggle to work. I felt like I was fighting for my life, I never pushed myself so hard in my life, trying to work and support myself. My mind was breaking, my heart was too broken.
After being brought in by police and hospitalized for about a month, the doctors were able to set up serious help for my disabilities for the first time in my life. I got real security, real safety, real independence, for the first time in my life. So many deep wounds in my heart were healed.
This year I started the St Therese novena again, and I was feeling bogged down and tempted by the scrupulosity again, just like last year, and on day 3, after the prayers, for some reason I just started silently praying, I think it was God, and I poured my heart out and I thought "wouldn't it be wonderful if I recieved a rose tonight." Then I kind of thought that would be dumb because I would have issues believing it was St. Therese because it was only day 3. But at that instant my phone dinged. And I thought "wouldn't that be wonderful if that was Jacqui with a rose." (Jacqui is my mother in law, and I really miss her too) and I looked at my phone, and it literally was Jacqui, posting a beautiful picture of a rose at St. Peregrine's shrine, at that exact instant, and I don't know much about that guy but I named my rabbit after him so that,'s something. And I was so frustrated and confused, because it was such a beautiful, beautiful rose, but it was only day 3, it made me feel like I wouldn't trust that it was from St. Therese, and I didn't know why God would give it to me at all if it was just going to confuse me... but later, because of my autism, I started to seriously struggle with anxiety with my phone notifications and emails for a lot of different reasons. It is a battle, and the chaos started getting the better of me at that time. That was the last prayer of the novena that I said, because I lost track of the email reminders, and I completely forgot about the whole thing until after her feast day. I realized later that I got a rose on the last day that I prayed it, and I got such a loving, sweet reminder that God doesn't care if I say every word perfectly, He just wants me... He accepts my 'yes,' I don't need to push so hard, I can breathe easy, I can just take joy in the beautiful little light He put in me... God made me enough the way I am...
Now just please pray for me to have patience and keep trusting. I believe God is doing some incredible healing, and this is the part where God is being a surgeon, and it hurts, but when we are ready to be reunited, we'll be whole and we'll be healed. My enormous fluffy puppy = anesthetic.
I felt so much care for you when I read your message. God loves you and he has your back. Jesus knows your heart and how hard you are trying. If there is one thing I could pray for you it would be peace of mind. You clearly care deeply for the Lord and just know that your life is in his hands so you can let go. Breathe and let the Spirit guide you in your walk. Try if you can not to stress so much and be less rigid. He's got you and he's going to take care of you. Just trust, love.

I have Autism as well, and I’m struggling with anxiety and other issues, I also love St Therese. I’m so glad that I’m not alone in my struggles.

I love doing the 54 day rosary-It is my devoted way of honoring Mother Mary, dedicating a special time each day solely to her and placing those flowers, weaving it into a crown with so much love with each Hail Mary and contemplating on The Mysteties.
Doing this as a daily practice, feels like a sacred 'bonding time,' profoundly strengthening my faith. ✨🩵✨

That’s the beauty of it, God wants us to pick up and keep going, He’s not asking for perfection. It’s in the video.

@@hoakerhoakerI hate admitting this but I feel like I have been hurt so many times, on top of the depression I suffer with, that I'm scared to pray to God. I have prayed a lot in the past and felt like a waiting game afterwards. Most times the prayers didn't get answered and I was left feeling lost, with no peace. Even when I prayed for peace, I didn't get that; just more and more anxiety. So I don't want to feel disappointed or angry at God when I pray and nothing happens.

Something is always happening and God hears and answers every prayer. Sometimes the answer is “not yet,” as He’s calling us to a deeper relationship with Him as He’s working things through in our everyday life.
Can you get to Eucharistic Adoration? Confession? Are there social groups for people your age at your parish? Isolation feeds depression, and I can’t help but wonder if you’re dealing with that.

Thank you, Father. I fell asleep & missed the 3rd day of my Divine Mercy novena. I was heart sick about it. But I will say it now, as I woke up at 4:00 a.m. for some reason, & I will continue with the 4th prayer later today. I know Our Lord understands. 4/2/24
I did the 54 day Novena months ago. On the 27th day (last day of praying and the day before giving thanks), Roe v. Wade was overturned.

a novena is not just one prayer to God. its a routine & when you do a novena that adds to that, or it should. 54 days is a long time. i didnt say i failed God. i said i failed to keep the routine, Fr. Mike explains in this video that that shouldnt discourage us though. i feel your comment is negative but im not sure if you understood me or if i am misunderstanding you but i hope my comment helps you to understand more what im saying.
@@aleahhxo I’m right there with you, I’d get so far behind on the 54 day rosary novena that I’d give up and have yet to complete one full 54 day novena.
Now we know, just pick up and keep going! God is not legalistic like humans tend to be.
We’ll both make it through, even if it takes 108 days. It’s about being intentional in prayer, it’s not a race.

also , you dont just magically believe you are saved and thats it , you must not have read your bible.
you can be saved but there is more to it than that. not all good people magically go to Heaven. you have to follow God's Will for your life & let Jesus live through us. our life is not about us. its about living for HIM & what He wants.
dont you think he wants you to follow the truth? humble yourself & do research on why catholicism is the only true way to live. things like the eucharist should be reason enough. Jesus HIMSELF lives in our church, alive and there everyday with us.
and if you do more research you will see that the catholic church is the only true church started by Jesus Christ Himself.

I did many many novenas to many saints and what ever was a available to help me guide me to a good wife over many years he a sent me my wife the same person I had always loved now 8 years married 4 children Thanks Jesus
I once did a 9 day Novena prayer all in one day because I really appreciated the meditation of the author's words. This comforts me because I have met a lot of people who ask about "the rules,"
I usually ask for help with something when I talk with God, but I also always accept what His will is.
I started a novena at one time and was afraid I would forget a day, so I prayed the entire novena in a single day and just kept doing do for as long as I could. I also know that God answers our prayers because I prayed for my daughter to get a new job after her first one closed. Within a week she got a new job! However, as my late husband once told me, sometimes God's answer is NO. He gives us what is best for us.

I began a novena for gods mercy on my mom who is now in nursing home with Alzheimer’s. it has been difficult to watch but I pray while with her and she sits quietly listening it brings great peace for me and the knowledge that god will give what I need when i need it makes it even more important for me I will continue for as long as I live with gods grace and mercy

My Novenas have been miraculous for me. St Joseph, St Martha and my friend, St Jude x I always feel sad when the Novena ends. I love the relationship with the Saints xx
5:31 - God knew I needed to hear this. I started the Novena of Our Lady Undoer of Knots on 10/06/2022 . . . I have six days of the Novena left and Father Mike just answered my question. I don’t have to start over, just pick up and keep going. In the past I’d catch up if I missed a few days and always wondered if my prayers counted. But being weeks behind? Now I know it doesn’t matter to God, He’s just happy to have me come into prayer with Him.
Our Lord is all loving and wants us to be in relationship with Him. He’s my Lord, not a slot machine or a teacher giving me a bad grade for turning a paper in two weeks late.
I’ve had several very stressful weeks, fear and uncertainty have come between me and my relationship with God. I lost every ounce of peace and sitting here listening to this that unsurpassable peace has come over me.
I adore Father Mike and all I learn from him. How blessed we are to have such a gifted Priest. He may never know how much he’s helped me this past year, yet God sure knows.

What about when you pray to be delivered from depression and anxiety but it never happens? It's not like praying for this is some materialistic request or doing harm to someone. It's simply being prayed for so that I'm able to be productive versus always struggling to be productive and not living up to my potential. I think this is how many end up suicidal. They get no relief from their mental stuggle, even after praying, and just figure that living with this pain is too much.
Thank you. I pray novenas to specific saints and angels for specific intentions as I was taught by my grandmother. I left the faith, moreso fallen state, but novenas brought me back. Its not perfect, nor are we. St Anthony, pray for us because we need a miracle!

Good video. After being raised as a Catholic I realize that there is so much of the Catholic religion that I didn’t know.
I pray 54 day novena, actually I'm am in the middle of one know. Obviously I have an intention in mind when praying. But I don't take it for granted, I'm not just saying Lord you have to make this happen. I always ask our Lord this is what I'm asking for but is it your will? If it is please make up happen but if at the end of my novena nothing is happening I always say OK it wasn't what it meant to be for me and my intentions. And I learned to accept it. By the way 54 day novena in my birth country (Poland) is called a Pompei Novena as it was in Pompei where is all started ( to best of my knowledge). God bless you all 🙏🙏🙏
Yesterday, we began in my prayer group the novena to Saint Jude whose feast fay is on October 28
I prayed a Novena on the 9 days running up to my baptism (at age 32, just last month) so it scared me when this came up on the playlist thinking I must’ve butchered it, thank you for setting my mind at rest. And thank you!
I’m going to say one. I’ve been struggling to get the five decades in so I will do this in addition to my normal prayers to show devotion for the next 8 days. I already started after watching. I wish I knew more about novenas. Thank you.
It doent really matter if our prayers is answered or not. God is our Lord and Saviour, He bestow upon us what He sees fit For us. At the very least at the end of the Novena we will be closer to God, and that is worth more then anything.
You must have heard of the 'Flying Novena' to our Blessed Mother Mother Teresa used and encouraged. Several years ago I was in danger of being thrown out on the street (I'm a senior citizen) with no place else to go. I prayed this novena and that week something happened that some may call a lucky convenience but this was to much to call lucky. That week what I thought to be impossible happened. It was unbelievable!!! I urge all to say this novena regardless of intention. Say it without a requested intention. Just to honor Jesus' and our Mother.

I’ve done it twice for my ex boyfriend to come back to the faith. He broke up with me on day 14. Then a year and a half later we got back together and I started another one several months into the relationship. He broke up with me on day 4. But I like to think Mary has accomplished what I could not. I was not able to bring him to the faith but Mary will bring him back!!!

Since the Lord has always instructed us to pray, the essence of a novena prayer should not merely be about obtaining what I desire within the nine days but rather dedicating prayers to the Lord 'always' during these nine days
I just don't understand why I have prayed and prayed and prayed some more to be delivered from depression and anxiety, yet after decades, they are still here and getting worse. It's not a materialistic prayer and it would not cause harm to anyone. Many people don't understand because it's dealing with emotions. But it's like if someone had to live with the flu everyday. Sure, you can go on but imagine how miserable it would be. It would get exhausting to have this. I see why many end up committing suicide. If prayers don't remove it, what is the point of suffering for so long?
I like the short novenas on Hallow. Hallow reminds me and keeps track of what day I'm on.

At mass this last Sunday, the priest said something that really struck a great chord inside of me. He said that “Prayer is anything that brings you closer to God”. I have a tendency to think that prayer is simply placing my palms together, closing my eyes and offering words up to God…..I see now that the highest form of prayer is taking action in alignment with faith as it is through actions that life changes are brought about most. I will always pray the Rosary and the Our Father, other prayers too, but seeing actions as a form of prayer really helps me to hone them correctly and to use them to grow closer to my Lord.

Very good points all around. The way I think about it is that giving God nine days of prayer is not an excuse to forgo giving him a lifetime of prayer. A novena is a structure, not a substitute. As for the transactional pitfall, there is a reason we often start prayer by offering God something that he has done/does/has given and asking him to do likewise for us. We don't say these things to impress God with trivia. We say these things because we recognize his infinite grace and mercy, give thanks, and trust that he will continue to act in our lives.

Thank you for this, Fr. Mike. I always struggled with novenas, especially with ADD. I just figured that if I can't do it 'right' then I might as well not even try.

THANK YOU!! I was a new Catholic when I learned about novenas from Jackie on Ascension Presents. As a life-long prayer-warrior it was a challenge right up my alley. I felt productive in my prayers as my patients received healings and blessings during that time of strength. Oh, but then I shared my story thinking I’d encourage others…nope! I was “taught” by a few who called themselves “Cradle Catholics” and they lovingly encouraged me to learn the proper technique and mend my mistakes. “You must start on this day, you must state the intention at this point, you must pray a whole rosary for each topic of intention-not a general subject using each bead for each person involved…you must, you can’t, you should! My decades of joyful prayer was squelched for almost a year. I continued out of a sense of duty but used all the legalistic rules. YUCK! I may be a rebel that isn’t using proper technique but I’m back to my joyful spot and seeing results. I really needed to see/hear this video encouragement from a wonderful teacher of the faith. Thank you so very much.
Warblingsongbird… I love your name. At the Thursday of Holy Week vigil this year I imagined my prayers like a little songbird in the garden of Gethsemane, keeping Our Lord company during his agony of preparation. I’m so happy to find another songbird ❤️🙏❤️
Hi Fr. Mike. I think we tend to misuse these devotions as an ATM because we feel the need to accomplish anything we set our mind to, and feel that anything that doesn"t achieve the goal is a waste of time and effort. Sometimes, I too have the wrong intentions when I pray these novenas. Last year, a CFR priest prayed Fr. Michael Gaitley's 33-day novena with a group of us online, and I was disappointed that nothing positive had changed in my life during the course of these 33 days. But I think all prayers will be answered in God's time. God bless.🙏🙏
Believe or not the only two novenas I’ve prayed for are
1. A nine day, which I understood in a way that had me praying for weeks or months (cannot remember). I asked God for a path in life
2. I prayed to St Anthony. Every Tuesday for 14 weeks (a few seconds each time). I prayed before for lost things and always found them afterwards. I prayed for giving my mother the lost respect she has to receive from her son. I changed, and grew in my faith and in my veneration of the Virgin Mother
After that some novenas attempted but little success. I recommend not holding an expectation to complete it but retreat alone and become a slave to God by only trusting him completely and not asking others on how to pray/what to read. The Catholic Church knows best what to do for speaking to God because it is His Vhurch. Might as well be honest to yourselves and seek inner peace with scripture or novenas we pray to be in our lives
I found this very comforting. I sometimes worry that when I die, I will get a report card grading me on how well I did on all things religious and the grades will be pass or fail, so everything would be fail because I haven't done them perfectly. Praise God that He knows me and knows my heart.

I am a Catholic convert and I love learning from you Father Mike every morning. In regards to novenas, I always get stuck with the "Intention." I am just not exactly clear about what to put there. Most of the time, I ask for something and that feels shallow, however I know there are lots of options, but what are they? I hear in this type of question a lot of superstition, too. Some people believe they have to recite prayers almost like a mantra, or worse, a spell. We are not conjuring a result (the ATM mentality); we are partnering with God.

I believed something that I really believed was Gods Divine Will for my life. I had read that the reason there are 9 in the Novena was it stood for “symbol of imperfect man going to God in prayer” so I did Pedro Pio Novena and low and behold I was completely wrong but the Sacred Heart of Jesus changed my heart so much I could not believe how I thought that was Gods Divine Will for my life! I so wished I would have done it years earlier. But I know God was behind that too but I’m so glad he changed my heart! God Bless all who are seeking Gods Divine Will!

Our Lord Appeared to Sister Lucia from Fatima. He explain to her that if a person misses the first Saturday they could do the first Sunday in place of. After I read that it was such a consolation because sometimes they didn’t have first Saturday at my church.
I completed the 54 Day Novena, I prayed my Rosary on the way to work and sat in my car until I finished each day.
How to waste your time on a false practice........Prayer's only benefit may be in the illusions to the one praying. Other than that its a useless action.
@@glennherron9499 the entire rosary is supposed to be prayed while concentrating on the life and actions of christ. Each decade of the rosary is dedicated to something Christ did or an event that took place in his life. Is meditating on Jesus Christ not the same thing as meditating on God?

You're taking scripture out of context to justify a radical position. What makes you think you are qualified to lecture Catholics on the bible that they translated, assembled and studied? I think you've been radicalized into some sort of fundamentalist protestantism. The reality is that if you wanted to know what Catholocs believe you could easily learn it, but you would rather argue from a perceived position of holiness that is unbecoming of a sinner like you. Who are you to tell me who I do and do not worship? I do not worship Mary. I do not worship saints. I worship Jesus Christ and him alone.

Thank you. I had used the booklet of the official prayers for the 54 Day Novena. Now I cant find it so I thought it would not count. I try to find it. But I see now that I can say the Rosary reverently with meditations on each mystery. Thank you again. 🐦 📿🙂

This would have been handy 20 years ago 😅 my parents never got along so I prayed and prayed aaand prayed before I even started dating in order to have a great marriage and... nope 🙄 gonna watch the video to see what I did wrong, not that I can fix it now but still I would really want to know what went wrong, I was 100% sure I was gonna have the greatest marriage ever!
