    • @griffisjm
      @griffisjm Před měsícem

      They can't just outbid. They have to have an approved development plan. Also, I believe it's been reported, at least as of a few months ago, that they are not interested and will not be bidding. As for permits, I don't think that will be a problem, the city would want the district and I'm sure whatever deal gets done will be ironclad enough to persuade the banks or city. I think the real problem is there is no excuse for what has happened. I don't think Murrello is the right guy. Look at my Canes, They were the talk of relocation, lowest attendance, near last place every season. Team gets sold, next year the team is at the cap and has talent playing. Continue to draft well and bring in the right guys and its the exact opposite. Great team, 100% attendance every night, and that's here in Raleigh, a non-traditional hockey market, with tons of other things to spend money on and go do and competition with the largest college basketball hub with UNC/Duke/NCstate. We are one of the smallest cities in the NHL, a measly 460k in the city and 1.5mil in the MSA making us only slightly bigger than Buffalo or Winnipeg, and compared to pheonix's 1.6million in the city and staggering 5 MILLION MSA!!!! There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for not succeeding. Let's say an Arena size of 20k seats that means here in Raleigh 1 in 80 people must be willing to pony up the ridiculous amounts of money to go to the game, compared to Phoenix's 1 in 250. With those numbers, even with the team crap they should be able to fill half the seats and if only 1/4 of those were fans that would have been enough to swing the vote, the fact that they didn't shows people just DO NOT CARE!!! Now granted, MAYBE with the right owner, MAYBE, they could succeed and create enough buzz to bring in 1/250th of the area 30 times a year, and there are sports fans, each of the other 3 teams(Suns, cards, Dbacks) were all atleast average in attendance %, so there are sports fans who should support the team. To me it just makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE that they have gone through this. Again, MAYBE it could work, but if I were the NHL no way in the world would I go back with the same ownership.

    The salary cap brings parity in one important aspect, it allows the small market teams to be competitive in paying their stars on the same level as big market teams. That may work for those of you living in LA, NY, or Toronto, but as someone from a small market city I’d never want go back to the old system. It was brutal back in the 90’s having to lose our stars over money. The salary cap has its negative aspects too, no doubt, but I’m grateful it’s in place.

    • @MatEvans182
      @MatEvans182 Před měsícem +4

      Absolutely this. I think Alan forgot the 2002 Wings team where they went out in the off-season and basically got a bunch of the top stars and cruised the whole way to the cup. It was a fun team but it always felt unfair (not literally) when they won. Sure the Rangers spent too and they didn’t win but that’s because they were bad at it 😂
      But it is def the case that small market teams are more in on the the big UFAs and retaining their current stars in terms of being able to afford their salary than they would be if no cap existed.

    • @michaeldevaul2558
      @michaeldevaul2558 Před měsícem

      @@gibberish5388 Thats a different scenario, since the Islanders joined the league decades ago. The market for hockey in the GTA is likely saturated, so much so that not only would a second team in the GTA hurt the Leafs revenue, but also the Sabers as well. You are not going to find new fans to draw in, just move existing fans around. To an extent, that's also the problem with Quebec (that and there just isnt the money that you would get from a larger market so its seen as a bit of a waste of an expansion slot).
      The reason the league wants expansion teams going to places like Arizona, Atlanta, Houston (places where they have failed before and have been untested) is because they are untapped markets. They add much more new revenues from tickets, merch, and broadcast rights. And to be clear, Arizona and Atlanta failed because of the ownership, not the fans.

    I think acting like the Cap isnt a major factor is just bananas. Sure, Management, scouting, coaching, development, drafting, are all parts of the equation, but without a cap there is no way the league is what it is today, as popular, and with very small markets having a chance to win. For instance, Here in Raleighbwe have a meager 460k people in our city, 1.5mil in the MSA, that means that 1 in 80 people must put out the cash to come to a game. Compare that to places like NYC, LA, Chi, Tor, Dal, Wash, etc... Cities with more people have more fans competing for tickets so prices are higher. More people buying merch when the go to games and on the street. Larger cities have people with more money who can spend more at the games. All in all, theres no way that Cities like Raleigh, Winnipeg, Buffalo, would make near the same $, and if there was no cap, there's no way smaller cities could bring in the Talent, especially nowadays when players are commanding such High salaries. Its not all important but the cap is most definitely one of the reasons that the NHL as a whole is competitive and succeding as it is. A major reason.

    Hey Adam. You're Toronto fan bias is showing. I can tell you as a Sens fan that having the Leafs scoop up a bunch of over-priced veterans each year, and then beating the young and cheap Sens was not a fun fan experience. For me, to be a fan of a hockey team you have to believe that the league is set up to allow your team a decent chance of winning. Going into the season as a small market team felt like starting a fight with one hand tied behind your back. The current system limits the disparity. It doesn't eliminate it. The big teams can afford larger and better staffs. But as a fan I can tell myself that a smaller hungrier staff might just be able to beat a big money club. If the cap ended tomorrow then I would stop following my team. The top players would be free agents at 25, and would know they could go join the Leafs $180M payroll and have a great chance of going deep in the playoffs every year. The Chicago's of the world wouldn't have to suck and then get lucky to draft Bedard, they could just ignore the draft and sign a player like that when he turns 25 and is entering his prime.
    To me, fans of big market teams that want to get rid of the cap are advocating for a league without small market teams, because those small market teams would wither and die with 'UFA at 25' and no cap.
    I like the fact that organizations are competing on how to build a team. How to divide your budget. How to prioritize different needs. Without that it's like watching a chess match where one player starts with only half their pieces. No thanks.
    There are already a number of factors that make it harder for some teams. Canadian dollar. Taxes. Weather. Media scrutiny. History of mediocrity. Quality of life. But to me, those are just enough of a challenge to feel like an underdog, but not enough to make it seem insane to have hope for a team.

    The Utah Missionaries. Think of the possibilities! Instead of point to point, you have missionary position to position. Instead of scoring a goal it would be delivering the pamphlet ( or delivering The Word ) Hat tricks would be The Trinity. I would go on, but I think I've been offensive enough to some people. Just remember God has a sense of humor; just look at the duck billed platypus.

    Just because the Leafs haven't won a cup in the salary cap doesn't mean certain teams wouldn't pay 30 million for McDavid and still have twice as much money to spend as other teams lmao. That's not drinking the Kool-Aid that's just math.

    First of all they cannot be called the coyotes. The name is owned by previous ownership. Second, the new ownership should have a name and colors already in the works. Not having just the name makes this team look like a joke to begin with. From a buisness aspect look at the millions their losing on memorabilia and team apparel.
