Okay, I haven't seen the fill video but I think it is insane that people don't use the subscription tab. The whole reason it exists is so you can track your favorite stuff. I hate using the home feed because it gives me nothing relevant to what I want. I already got the people I want in the subscription tab
Same! I don't understand why the subscription tab isn't used, that's wild. I subscribe to see the videos my favorite creators put out, so I go to that tab to see them. So weird. I've also never been randomly unsubbed from a creator.

Thats actually what it takes to be a successful youtuber. You have to get people to rock with YOU, not just your content. That way when your content alters, theyll stick around. Ive already seen comments here along the lines of "i watched you for your reptile videos. I dont dislike you, i just stopped watching" which is another way of saying "i dont rock with you"
I like this dude. Im just biased against vlog type content. He needs to find a lane that makes fun and comedic content. He seems to have some thick skin. I think he should 100% go to political rallies and have a crazy bag of reptile fun facts and just randomly ask people about reptiles. Theres always good reactions there, theyre all so emotional. And itll spread awareness of our scaley friends
I only use the home feed if I'm on my phone and I'm just scrolling through the auto play stuff, otherwise my Subscriptions tab is my home page and that's how I consume CZcams. So when I see a bunch of people complaining about not seeing videos from their subs in their feed it never made sense to me; if you're subbed to someone you should always see their frickin videos. Then again, like you said, people are doing it wrong and even if presented with detailed instructions, sometimes there's no fixing that.
Learning about the stuff CZcamsrs see behind the scenes is interesting to me. I’m glad you’re making these videos, they’re informative and down to earth.

watching the evolution of this channel has been an absolute delight.
i have never owned a reptile nor had to care for one, but i've watched the care and info vids out of curiosity and stuck around because alex is fuckn funny. the derpiest herper out there, and with an honestly impressive entrepreneurial mindset for someone so young.
despite that, there's probably been many times when i've been recommended a goherping video on my home feed but had a plan to search something or check my notifications, and so didn't even look through the recommendations as i immediately navigated away from the home screen. more recently i've just not had the time to watch everything, but still enjoy seeing the notif for a new goherping upload with some random title.
and alex, if you're reading this, i commend you for branching out and trying what feels right. and for showing me the error of my ways; i have been using youtube wrong lmao thanks bro glhf
Ah yes, Alex deep-throating at 4:28...truly the peak of this channel. In my case, I have all your notifications turned on, so yours pop up whenever they're notified. I agree, those who use their home feed to find your videos don't make any sense. If you love a CZcamsr's vids so much, FOLLOW THEM and turn your NOTIFICATIONS on! And CZcams hasn't unfollowed me from any channel either, last I checked (though I still agree that they really need to fix this dang platform). Meanwhile, my recommended page is blessed with memes, train vlogs, and history/geography and I'm happy.

I almost always go to the subscriptions tab. I first have a short glance at the home feed to see if there is something new or interesting there and then immediatly almost religiously put almost all the new vids in my subscriptions tab into a playlist and watch them. I even seek out the pages of creators that i haven't seen from in a while, because i get suspicious that some videos are even hidden in the subscriptions feed. I don't know if i just missed them somehow but it did happen multiple times that i found an unwatched video of someone i am subscribed to that way, that i didn't see in my descriptions tab
Subscriptions tab is the only way I can view videos from stuff I'm subbed to. My home page never has anything I want to click on.
it's rare I ever run out of content from people i already watch in the sub tab. worst case scenario, i fall down a 'suggested video' rabbithole under what i'm watching lol

Just wanted to say that you're the only youtuber i actually actively follow as a personality. I watch almost all your videos, and even if I don't entirely want to watch it, I let it play through anyway to get you more views. I like all your videos and comment sometimes, which I never do elsewhere. Why? Because you remind me of old youtube, and I like you, and I'll watch whatever you make. I like how you don't let yourself be boxed in by some stupid algorithm, and make whatever you want. I want to encourage it in any way I can. Others like me are here for it.
I’m 40 yrs old and I really like shorts. Most is funny cat videos or stand up comedy. It’s a fantastic little brain break without having to watch a full video. I’ve been watching you for a number of years, I thought you were intriguingly mature for your age and funny. I liked following your small business journey, especially since it was animal rescue. I also can majorly relate to you with your burnout period. I too have experienced this. I was a zoo keeper/environmental educator for almost 15 yrs. I got to a point where I just didn’t have it in me to continue with my career path. Mostly because of the curators I was under, and the way the animals were treated. I was done. So I went back to my roots, working with horses. And again, I’m experiencing burnout. And it’s because the ranches in my area are selling or shutting down making it extremely difficult to find places to keep my horses and work with other peoples horses. I think burnout comes when a situation becomes hopeless, no end/progress in sight and no room for development (personal or financial). It mentally and emotionally breaks you down. I’m sorry kid, and I understand. But you’re pretty smart and independent, so I have faith you’ll be ok. Take care.
Do people really not use the subscriptions tab? I literally use it for 80% of my browsing. I watch any content from creators I'm subbed to and then when I want to find something new, go to the home tab. I thought that was like, common sense?

I use home feed to see random videos, subscriptions tab for my subscriptions, and the bell for people I really want to watch. I get sucked in watching shorts, I try not to, I love long 20+ minute videos, more though.

i agree with your "you're using youtube wrong" comment - i watch everything in my subscriptions and use an rss reader to keep up with everything, am not a fan of letting any algorithm choose things for me. i found you by looking for ball python help, watched all your videos and will continue to, the recent "how to youtube" stuff is equally interesting
As soon as I open CZcams I go to my subscription box and catch up on all the videos by creators that I actually like to watch consistently. After that if I have time I’ll check out the home feed. I don’t get why people subscribe to channels just to ignore the channel in their subscription box. That being said, I have a very specific way I watch CZcams due to the way I spend my online time; while some people, just like to browse and such (which is 100% fine). CZcams is a platform that is so varied in how you can use it and why people use it that I think it’s hard for anyone to really push through the algorithm long term and not just go viral from one or two videos. I don’t know, that’s just my thoughts tho.

Something that I've noticed recently that's been really frustrating is I'm not being shown videos by creators that I am subscribed to in my subscriptions tab.
I mean there's not people I'm not subscribed to, but theres creators that I'm not being shown videos from.
The only way I can be so sure this is because I watch almost every video in my subscriptions( I have WAY too much time)
I figured out that I'm only being shown the people that are really popular and the people who post frequently. Like people who post a monthly and aren't big creators are NOT SHOWN to me in my SUBSCRIPTIONS. I have to go to their channels specifically to find anything. And with how many people I'm subbed to a lot get forgotten
I typically look on subscription tab till I run out of what I want to watch then go to home but most of your vids I click while on subscription tab but I'll admit the pvp isn't my thing but I'll gladly watch most things you post just because you seem like a good guy trying his best so you got this
The thing with shorts/tiktok/reels/etc is you choose what you want to *continue* watching vs *choosing* what you want to watch. I have never personally converted to a subscriber from watching someone's shorts.
I usually comb through my subscriptions and mark anything I want to see for my "watch later" list. And then I hop over to the Home to find more stuff to add. I am one of those people who constantly want to find new people to watch. I get bored if I watch the same person over and over. I'm not even close to being a YTer, I just make videos for the fun of it, but I still like to watch these kinds of videos because it helps me understand how this whole thing works. You've been recently recommended to me again on my Home page, the last time I was recommended your videos was when you were building that wall, I think in your garage?, to make a new reptile room. And before that I was recommended some of your unboxing videos. Funny how the whole thing picks and chooses what it thinks I want to watch. lol Personally, I like your laid back, calm style, that's what the majority of people I watch are like because I don't like being yelled at while watching a video. lol
if you could do a future reptile video on how to get over your fears of holding reptiles id appreciate it, ive always found them interesting from your channel but ever since ii was a kid i was deathly afraid of actually touching or holding them. honestly your channel is probably one the sole reasons why i am interested in reptiles as much as i am today even though im still not comfortable handling them :/
99% of the time i use my sub section. i don’t have unlimited time to watch youtube and when i do, i wanna catch up on my fav channels. yours is one of them.
I remember uploading stuff on YT way back in the day (2006/2007). I dabbled with it on another account back in like 2010ish again just for fun (circle lenses). But I totally understand. I invested in Go-Pro's and editing software then told myself "Let's get back in to it" and... I never did. I have NO idea where to start or even what to record. Should I record farm life? Uh.. house repairs? Maybe snek videos.. chickens? More circle lens videos? Make-up? Too... many...options. So, in the end, I'll just keep sitting here and watching lol.
I'm 36.. before CZcams we had.... ummmmm.... DVDs and tapes! That was our long-form content.... and cable, which is barely even a thing now apparently lol

haha I control when ads show up but not what they are. But I can block certain companies from showing on my channel

Crazy three to four years ago you got several hundert thousands to millions of views and now you are in tens of thousands. Mad how things change.
I'm not a fan of the subscriptions tab. About 30% of the videos currently on it are shorts - which I also don't like. The biggest problem, however, is that videos aren't removed from the page after you've viewed them like they are on the home feed. When you're subbed to over 100 channels, that's a lot of scrolling to avoid 1) shorts and 2) things you've already seen just to find fresh content. The home feed addresses those issues - especially since I can exit out of the shorts section and not have to have it taking up space.
I love your sense of humor! And your videos! I like that you’re kind of branching out with some different content.(I do still love the unboxing videos of course though) I was glued to the screen when you were introducing your chickens 😂 and I had to keep track of ant progress 😂

I'm on the telly! I think people just use the homepage because its easy and interesting, being the first page you see and specifically curated to your interests. I personally don't mind missing videos from my subscriptions because I don't have time to watch everything, and I already use 2x speed on all videos

Wow this video is soo informational. Coming from a person who feels like she is addicted to CZcams, iv always wondered what the difference for the creator would be between viewing the video versus clicking the video. It’s funny CZcams thinks the reason would be for not clicking is because it’s not entertaining enough. Again coming from someone who spends her life on this thing, I avoid clicking SOLEY because I am avoiding ads. The times I do click it’s because something is being shown that is too small or far away so I have to click and make the video larger. That’s it. Nothing less nothing more.
Great videos by the way, found some of your stuff because I was considering ball pythons. My favourites were the Uber driver vids.
Ironic how he makes this video, and a month later he gets his account terminated. Also, my deepest condolences for all of that.
I think another aspect of the CZcams shorts that makes them appealing is the fact that they don't have ads in front of them
The problem with shorts is that you don’t make money from it as a creator, don’t know if that has changed yet but people with millions of views would get like ten bucks from it

Fish for Thought doesn't have reptile videos but he sometimes shows turtle tanks and amphibian tanks and he has a really cool crested gecko who sits on his microphone sometimes!

I don't think the shorts are hurting long form content. I watch a LOT of long form content. Anything from 15 mins - 2 hour videos as I work from home and like to watch long form content as I work. I, thusly, get a lot of long form content recommended to me. Game Streamers, SCP exploration series, Rslash videos, Animal enclosure and product reviews, animal stuff in general, opinion pieces and movie reviews, ect. Ect. It's all over the place but still all long form because I have a history of this enjoying and watching long form content all the way through. I love shorts as well. You really have to weed out of lot of crap to find shorts from creators that's are really good and fit your interests. But because the short algorithm works separately from the video algorithm my home page isn't just blasted with shorts nor is it blasted with short form content. I think despite the issues youtube has its really unfounded to say that the issue lies in shorts and short term content when it's a societal phase and doesn't mess with your normal youtube algorithm anyway.
Your videos always show up on my home feed but most the times I just come here because I got a notification. I think you’re an amazing creator, I think the demise of your CZcams has to do something with the more lengthy and off topic stuff
The home feed is loaded with videos I already watched or new videos from channels I usually watch whether I am subscribed or not. CZcams rarely recommends anything new or stuff I would be interested in. If I want to find new stuff I usually have to search.
AVNJ is an Ichthyology channel, so he's an exception to the reptile rule.

People don't use the subscription tab? Everyday when I wake up it's the first place I check before looking at home page to see what's new on channels I haven't subbed to.
Finally someone who proves that others use the home and subscriptions tabs...or is at least trying to educate them. And now if only they would keep all the shorts of the sub tab that'd be great.
I think the clickrate will be higher than than Alex predicted because I am guilty of only using the home page (I sub to a lot of creators that i don't watch all the time cause I wanna support the cause!) and I also didn't get recommended the vlog series, only the ants, but this was recommended to me despite all of that and I feel the title is intriguing enough especially because this has been happening to a lot of the people who sub to you and it's like confirmation bias clickbait almost? but then educational as you explain what actually happened. I'm quite interested in the results to be honest.
My ctr is 3.5% or better. My videos get 100-150 views then die off after a few days. Then get NO views. I’m making casual travel vlogs, but it does feel like my reach is limited. My video’s literally die off and get no views after 3-6 days.

I remember always seeing your videos on my subscriptions feed until randomly sometime around last year I stop seeing your videos and just kind of forgot about your channel. Today I searched for something about reptiles and your video was the 4th or 5th option. I watched your video then I realized that I hadn't seen your videos in a while. Turns out I was unsubscribed from your channel. I don't recall unsubscribing from your channel or a reason to unsubscribe from the channel, but it is kind of weird now that you mention it. Anyways I've seen a lot of channels gain subscriptions by posting shorts or clips. Might be worth a try.
I always use the subscriptions where my video notifications are and only watch ppl I follow.
As someone who subscribes to people because I like them, and want to support them, that doesn't mean I want to see every single video they post unless I really like them. There are some channels that are spammy also, with multiple videos a day because they are a business or something, and then there's also shorts, which I hate to watch that show up in my subscriptions. I rely on my home feed more than subscriptions especially since I have adhd and my hyperfocus changes all the time. I could one day be watching chemistry videos for school to watching trashy day time TV reactions, to plant care for a specific house plant. I think my feed works really well but it's important not to forget the creators you subscribe to that you really like. I'm not saying I don't ever use my subscriptions to find videos, I just hate to use it because it looks like my abandoned email inbox, full of spam that I have no interest in opening.
It took me a very long time to figure out what was going on with the home feed. But I just got tired of getting so many things I didn't want to see (too much clickbait and stuff that shows the algorithm doesn't get me lol) so i finally figured out to just go to my subscriptions for the things I wanna see, and go to home to look for new stuff.
Pretty ironic the one where you get many hits again if the one where you fell off. While you're telling people they're using CZcams wrong, my people don't even get to go on CZcams. Just government officials. And that's honestly for their own good with the kind of content there is on this platform. You are one of the few wholesome people on this platform I cherish

This is a super interesting video. Honestly, re: the PUBG video, I didn't click on it even though I saw it because my gut reaction to it was 'oh, great, another youtuber doing a gaming video like all the other ones.' Petty? Maybe. But when I DO click on your videos I'm reminded that your perspective/approach to humour and thought is engaging even in contexts I may be overly familiar with.

I remember when youtube was new didn't have ads, I googled how old is youtube and it's only 17 years so it doesn't make me feel too prehistoric. vlogging and reaction channels seem to do the best, I think 90% of the content I watch now is reaction/commentary type stuff.
