ALSO - make sure you download the free PDF excerpt mentioned in the interview at adamtanpercussion.com/download - it's an awesome insight into the intricacy of GOLD MEDALLIST front ensemble writing from Ian. Anyway, if you enjoyed this kind of interview, let me know down below if there's anyone else you'd like to see on the show!
P.S. I have to apologise for the Zoom audio from me - my lav audio file was corrupted and I also didn't realise you can have the cameras on gallery view instead of speaker view -_- Needless to say, I have learned my lesson!!

Thank you for making this video. So helpful.
Thanks so much for having me on and letting me talk too much! :) Looking forward to our next one(s) and hope you are doing well on the other side of the world my brother!
You too man, you're an inspiration to all of us (you never talk too much 🤣)! Stay safe over there and let's do it again soon!
Adam Tan The best part is I just realized when I went on endlessly about choosing what key to write Dr. Gradus in, just realized I ended up changing it back to the original key because it worked better 🤦🏼♂️😂 Doh! There were many versions before this one!
@@MrIanGrom I thought it sounded different enough still ;)
Great Stuff Adam and Ian!
There was so much great information. Thank you for doing this, it was very helpful!
This is the crossover event of a lifetime...
Hahaha Ian's definitely carrying it :))
Ian Grom is by far the most interesting front ensemble arranger in the marching arts
He could talk about anything and make it interesting 😯
@Adam Tan could you do an interview with Kevin Shaw at Broken City Percussion? I'd love to hear what he has to say about reinventing lyrical pop music for front ensemble, how to assign who in the pit has the melody (guitar, vibraphones, lyrics, marimbas), how to create good sounding music with odd time signatures, and arranging for metallic keyboard vs. wood keyboards and how the two timbres work side-by-side.
the goat himself
Agreed
Grind. Optimise. Automate. Thrive.
One of the reasons I made pulse was by playing your solo lotus, this is my favorite video rn, I love Grom, very much an inspiration
Thank you for playing my piece, I'm glad it helped you get into pulse!
Adam Tan it was such a fun piece to learn, I’m glad I have it under my belt! Thank you for responding! 🥺☺️
Also definitely going to be playing Lotus for marching percussion auditions in the future
I remember meeting him multiple times at wgi championships in 2019 with my director and Ian Grom is one of the most wholesome people I have ever met and took so many photos with our whole front ensemble and me. We also played one of his marching band shows in 2018 called puppet master and it is my favorite show we have ever performed at my school.
Ian is sooooo awesome and genuine, omg looooved working with him
He really is! Thanks for watching Josh!
Josh Jones I MISS YOU BROTHER!!! Hope you’re doing well and safely wrapped in bubble wrap in your house!
Love the melding of worlds here. As a person interested in general composition who’s learned their fundamentals through the marching activity, this makes me super happy. The more perspectives the better!
Just got done playing Xylo for my “ageout” at Vessel 🙂
I love the "don't worry about how to write for a particular instrument, just write" advice from Ian. A composers main concern should be getting the notes on the page, the musician will figure out how to play it. Great interview!
My favorite CZcamsr and the legend himself in the same video... quarantine just got a whole lot better :)
This guy made my mallets thats craaaaaazy
If we’re on the topic of interviewing big front ensemble names, Jim Ancona would certainly be an interesting person to interview!
George Collins! He's someone who's inspired many in the marching world. Considerably one of the smartest thinkers I know. If you could interview him, he'd bring a lot to the table!
... Who is George Collins ?
You should check out Jim Casella! He was a DCI/WGI percussion arranger for Santa Clara Vanguard. He’s posted some of his SCV arrangements on his CZcams channel under his name.
Please interview Kevin Shah and Mike Jackson!!!
Really loved Ian's point of view! Really making me miss WGI!!! T.T
Really educational and fun to watch! Do more of these!
Got the notification for this right after finishing your recent wgi video lmao, ian is such an amazing dude, i love his personality!
He is sooooo great!
Great conversation! Thanks Adam and Ian!!
MIKE. JACKSON.
(from Broken City)
You should do a video one day about high school marching bands, Texas marching bands, it a while other experience.
Maybe an interview with Mike McIntosh from The Cavaliers and Matt Jordan from the bluecoats and Jacksonville State University. Two very smart people!
Thank you so much for your great videos !
omfg this is so cool
Hey Adam! There's actually marching groups out there that take kids over 22, both outdoor and indoor. While there aren't many, they exist and there's actually some really really good ones. Just thought you'd might want to know :)
I love how Ian Grom described the use of electronics in the marching arts
Great interview!!!! Really like your videos.......👊
THIS GUY IS AWESOME! YOU AND MR IAN GROM MAKES ONE HELL OF A CROSSOVER!
I love this, Ian is my favorite, every time flo or gridbook or some organization show Ian in their videos he steals the show
Great interview Adam, Thank You!
Two of my favorite people in the same video!
You the best Ryan!!
This interview was very informative!! Thanks to both of you for putting this together.
Great interview! Thanks for sharing such clear perspectives!
Ian Grom is amazing
MOST HYPED VIDEO EVER!!
This was great, Adam! Thank you for sharing with us.
I’ve been wondering all this for so many years so many questions answered thank you 🙏
Id love to see a video with Michael McIntosh!!
IAN GROM!!!!
omg- IAN OMG
Anyone else think that he looks like a younger version of Adam savage from mythbusters?? Lol
Great video thanks :)
Matching percussion is way more fun imo
Yes, Ian!!!!!
He is great 😁 (And you are too!)
@@AdamTanPercussion Haha, thank you. So are you!!!
NAOKO!!! Miss you and hope you and the family are doing well!
THIS IS BOSS!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
now i want to audition for pow
Go for the big bois
Honestly do that. A lot of people are scared that they won't make it, but even if
you don't you will have world class instruction for a day or 2.
@@simaipinacomposer YESSSSS
Go for it dude. Pulse and POW have a joint audition process where you'll learn from some of the best instructors in the world, regardless of whether or not you end up marching in either group. Even for those who don't quite make the cut, the audition still doubles as a clinic. They don't just cut you and send you on your way; they really make sure you get your money's worth.
Wonderful!
Uninvited is my favorite show ever. I always wondered who wrote rhe music
this is such a good vidoe
You should come to the 2021 DCI Champs!
Hopefully I can consider it when it all gets better :)
nice vid
I really enjoyed the interview. Full of so much inspiring information... However, I wish you did not edit the interview. I feel like you both were deep diving into a topic and suddenly the rest of the information that would have been amazing to hear was cut out. I realize that you may want to keep your videos to a certain length, but If you’re going to interview someone, let us watchers/listeners enjoy everything the interviewee has to say.
Interview Paul Rennick
