General Effect
Scv’s front ensemble uses a combination of grips. The wood keyboards use steven’s grip and metals use burton’s, so Trevor switches to match whatever he is playing primarily in the phrase
GE is General Effect, it's the judging category that is given the highest weight during WGI competitions. General Effect is high when the visuals match the music being played and vice versa.
Its a hard category to describe, but basically the judge will watch the show as a whole, how an audience member might, and react to it holistically.

i might add that it's the category that the most advanced, experienced judges get to adjudicate, being that it's so important, and yet so subjective

GE is general effect. But that’s not the interesting fact I have for you. Paul rennick who teaches at UNT is also the percussion caption head at SCV that’s why we get so much crossover

It looked like Trevor was using both Stevens and Burton. The mallets he was using was more than likely from Innovative Percussion, James Ross signature mallets. The IP902, IP903, IP904, and the IP905. Great Xylo/Bell mallets!!!

Up close there were some people (mostly females) that tied their hair down and colored it so they wouldn’t have to be bald but the majority did go bald and and it was worth it because they won 🤷🏼♂️
We just got our drumline music yesterday (I’m snare) and I’m super excited to start doing stuff like this since I was on front ensemble last year!

My high school did something like MCM's show last season, involving a lot of drill with the marimbas. Being split between front and back messes up the group tempo beyond belief.

My music teacher was a marimba player in Hand of Man!
That large, grip he was using was just an extended Burton grip. Bringing the thumb into the horizontal mallet really helps the stability for octaves of in this case, playing two different instruments at once. Lol
There is a behind the scenes MCM video that shows more of the details of the show and explains the masks. Short explanation, the marks had a small tube that came out of them and the performers could only breathe out of that tube due to the tight mask.

I believe that the Xylo player was using both. From what I have seen and heard, Rennick doesn't care much about your grip, but more about how you sound.
I assume the Xylo player just was good at playing both in certain situations, and Rennick let him in.

Hey Adam, at 18:20 you said that he played double strokes but Trevor (and the marimba line) were actually doing triple lateral at an incredibly fast speed
The marimbas were doing triple laterals but I think Trevor in this section is just doing doubles with the inside mallets cause his outside ones aren't moving haha. I'd love to see what the triple laterals of the marimbas look like though
