Something that makes me happy is the reduction of violence in parenting. Even as a 22 year old, pretty much all my friends were smacked at least once as kids. Now, my friends are becoming parents and the idea of smacking their kids is incomprehensible. I'm hopeful for kids in the future living with gentle parents and no violence whatsoever ❤️

One of the best examples of the Boomer Dad is Hank Hill, now he may be stubborn and generally naive to the changing modern world. But he is a man of principle and despite the fact he dosn't always understand his son Bobby. The two of them manage to reach some common groud and one usually teaches the other. Honestly, the KOTH episodes focused on Hank and Bobby are usually the most wholesome in the show.

I'd argue that Stan Smith (American Dad) is more in line with the detached/strict father role. However, it definitely comes from him being a hardcore Republican (i.e., strong family values from the 1950s).
There was an episode dedicated to Stan and Francine (his wife) raising clones of Steve (their son). Stan's clone became perfect academically and physically but also an unhappy sociopath. That clone also kidnapped the other Steve for a more carefree upbringing with the mom.
Also, at least when Stan is in the wrong, he's called out on it and learns a lesson.

That's making me imagine that you were in the children's section of a hospital (or a children's hospital) and they had Disney Junior on one of the TVs, since you mentioned 4 AM and IIRC, CBeebies (UK) and ABC Kids (Australia) don't run 24/7.
I discovered Bluey through a bot that posted clips out of episodes ripped from ABC iview, fell in love with the series as it reminded me of my (usually) annual trips to Perth, and later saw part of the intro and an episode when I passed by a shop that happened to sell pay TV piracy boxes, where they had a demo of one that was playing the US feed of Disney Junior. I won't be surprised if we both saw that episode it at the same time, as it was afternoon in Singapore when I saw it, assuming you live in a state that follows Eastern time when not observing DST, as Eastern Standard Time (UTC-4) in the US is directly opposite of Singapore (UTC+8)

Gen x lite. More optimistic. Trying to move past trauma and neglet, dealing with toxic masculinity and wondering if there's even any answers to parenting. Being very hands on but not strict and being open minded while still being critical. Realizing that kids will be kids and kids are little demons but they're our demons and we can always do what we can. Very casual.
Realizing that our kids need us involved but not overbearing. They will be thier own person with or without us. That our wives are more than capable but aren't superhuman.
A lot more "alternative familes". I hate that term. LGBTQ+, blended, single parent, mixed race, and multicultural families will probably be new storylines in shows. Fathers understanding that their kids ARE different from them and will have different experiences and that's OK.
But this all speculation. Conservative or old fashioned attitudes will always persist but I feel that every generation is united by the feeling of "it ends here". We will leave this place better than it started.

My brother is a father of 3 incredible boys and is an amazing dad. I just wish their grampa got to meet them. I know he would be proud of how his son has done. My favourite part about him is how he's so clearly an old man stuck in his ways, since he was raised with a lot of toxic masculinity and stuff like that, but despite that he does genuinely try to be better.
-He clearly has some bias about women in stem but overtime excepts that Maureen likes that stuff and comes around to it.
-Even though he does yell at his kids, he makes sure to never lay a hand on them like his father did.
-He's not great at it, but every now and then he does recognize that his son's are quite sensitive, as is able to open up emotionally to them.
Honestly Frank isn't the best dad, but I do really enjoy how given the time period, he's quite a progressive dad.
Does he need therapy? Absolutely. But the fact that he has a hint of self-awareness gives me hope that down the time, his kids will be able to fix their trauma, even though he probably won't.

My brother has kids and I see how his parenting is as well and the same goes for my husbands family so we made the decision not to have children. It's not that we dislike children but we don't want to negatively impact my children like our grandparents, parents and ourselves. The generational trauma stops with us. Instead we put the effort into our nieces and nephews instead.

  • @loke6664
    @loke6664 Před rokem +8

Not screwing up your kids is not an easy task. I'm a gen X, our parents themselves had super strict parents who never let them do anything so our parents basically let us do whatever we wanted which were both good and bad, we did learn to be independent but we might not be as great getting orders from our boss at work and sometimes lack a bit of disciplines. So when we became parents a lot of us became helicopter parents that might be the worst generation parents in a long time, micro managing kids were not a great idea and neither was "helping the kids a lot with everything".
Eddie's generation have their issues too, the "everybody wins" mentally set the kids up for a whole lot of disappointment when they grow up.
In short, every grandparent generation since at least Plato's time complains about the young generation and every parent generation find some new way to screw up the kids. The key is probably to avoid extremes, extreme freedom is bad for kids and so is extreme discipline. If you help your kids too little that will screw them up but if you help them too much they will grow up as pretty helpless.
Just be there for your kids when they need you, teach them how to solve problems instead of solving it for them and keep them in line but not too much and don't try to protect them from the world too much and they will be fine.
Any parent will make mistakes, all humans do.

I always remember the parents I looked up to the most in media was Little Bears'. It was one of my favorite shows growing up, but looking back at it, the level of patience, support and understanding they show for not only their son, but his friends as well is truly admirable. I think Father Bear is another amazing example of a cartoon dad. Always taking him on adventures, instilling strong family values, and teaching about a hard days work without forcing it onto Little Bear. Able to pass down morals and knowledge to Little Bear without talking down to him. Him and Mother Bear are able to be an example of the type of person they want their kid to be without talking down to him. While those 90's cartoons for small children aren't as nuanced as the writing for Bluey, I do believe they set the groundwork on how to write good parents. Unfortunately, I feel like the parenting style of Bluey's and Little Bears' folks could only truly work in the world shows like that take place in. Where everything is peaceful and no real conflict or evil exists. So while it's okay to strive to be like Bluey's parents, it's best to just use them as a reference and not something to base your entire style off of. Remember, It's okay if your kids aren't happy with you all the time and to learn some harsh truths.

I've never seen Bluey, but from what I hear everybody saying, it's probably the best kid's cartoon ever made. I'm glad the younger generation has such high quality show to watch.
