  • Hi guys, thanks for checking out my channel!
In this video, I share a day in my life while working as a Ginger Farmer in Australia!
I wanted to share a video like this because initially, I found it hard to grasp what life would really be like working on a farm as a backpacker. I couldn't get my head around how someone that had never worked on a farm, could step in, and become one of the essential workers for the farm's operations.
My wife and I have been completing our Regional Farm Work in Southern Queensland, and have been very fortunate to have found such an enjoyable job working on a Ginger Farm. In total, we will have spent just under 3 months picking ginger, by the time we leave.
We've had a really good experience, got our hands dirty, learned about a totally new trade, created a great relationship with the farmer, got to know all the gossip of the small village we're based in (sometimes not a good thing!), and essential for our Visa - completed our Regional Days.
I hope that if you're watching because you're thinking about obtaining a Working Holiday Visa then this inspires you to go out and submit your application. Please comment below if you are in this situation, or if you may have any more questions about farm life!
I know there are plans as of 2022 for U.K. citizens, to dismiss the requirement to work in a regional job in order to extend the Working Holiday Visa. However, that doesn't mean you can't go and work on a farm for the experience - and the money!
If you got value from this video please hit the like button, and if you'd like to see more of this type of content please subscribe and stay tuned for more videos of my time on a Working Holiday Visa in Australia!
Thanks again for watching, and as always, I'll be happy to engage in any conversation or questions you may have. Just leave a comment!
Have a great day, wherever in the world you are.
    Cheers,
    DB

Cheers for the kind feedback! Where in Aus are you planning to go initially? This farm is in Central Queensland, so if you're planning to be near then let me know.
If you haven't already I always suggest joining the relevant Facebook groups for backpackers. I've found the majority of my jobs in Australia using Facebook and connecting with employers directly. You could start by searching 'Backpacker Jobs Australia' for example, but then also you can be more specific depending on the location!
      Hope this helps!

@@DomandMeg cheers for the swift response! Me and my partner are flying into Melbourne to meet friends and family then travelling up the coast to potentially do our farm work in QL so it could work!
Yeah all of the Facebook groups are out next mission (we're in Thailand atm so just chilling, but want to be slightly organised) but yeah it's been very helpful! If you get a second to tell us more about the farm would be much appreciated :)

Do you reckon you'll try and stay in Australia ?
I recently married my now Japanese wife and will be looking to move to Japan next year . I don't speak japanese so I'm looking to do tesol.

    • @DomandMeg
      @DomandMeg  Pƙed 2 lety

It’s an interesting decision we’re going to have, whether to try and stay or not. As my wife is American - it’s bloody complicated for either of us to get British or American citizenship and probably easier for us both to get Australian 😆
That’ll be an amazing experience fo you. Definitely get yourself qualified as a TESOL teacher. What her you find full time/part time or even just odd jobs you’ll be glad you did đŸ™ŒđŸ»
As for not speaking Japanese, you’ll either pick up enough of it to get by pretty quick. Or you’ll find the people in your community will speak enough English to get by with you. Either way it’ll work!

Wow! That’s crazy. Recently I’ve seen the prices up at $50. It’s amazing knowing what the farmer sells it to the market dealer for though. It’s really a small amount and then when you see the mark up in the supermarket you realise how unfair it is on the farmers.

This was a farm close to Gympie in QLD. I loved it! I've kept the name of the farm quiet out of respect and to avoid bombarding the farmer with messages! I found the role on Facebook. Try the local job advertising groups. My wife and I posting a little bio of ourselves and what we were looking for. This was during Covid, so workers were in short supply and we were inundated with offers. It's likely to be the other way around now unfortunately. But don't be shy to try different places and move on if it doesn't fit your desires!

Yeah I have heard it can be an awful struggle to get the days finished - I would say I've been one of the fortunate ones, where the 3 jobs I've had have been very honest and enjoyable for the most part. The combination of working on a farm doing bushfire relief, working on a tropical island resort and then on a ginger farm, means that I've been able to save a lot and gain valuable life experiences too.
