Fascinating Death Rituals From Throughout History

  • Death is one of the few certainties in life. Every person experiences it in some way (including their own), and very often, will take part in a ritual surrounding the end of a loved one's life.
Many similarities exist among historical death traditions, but there is no single way to grieve, express loss, or celebrate a person's life. Whether it's how a group prepares a corpse, shows continued deference and care for a deceased loved one, or honors the legacy of a fallen hero, death rituals reveal a lot about living. As a result, the end of life has been met with cultural practices and religious rites through the ages.

3:35 According to the myth, if one's heart is lighter than the feather, through good deeds and living a just life for examples, you can move on into the afterlife worry free into paradise. However, if your heart is heavier than the feather, Ammut, a crocodile like creature, will eat it and your soul and you will cease to exist spiritually.

I'm all in for the sky burial. I've told my family that when I croak, just toss me in a ditch or in the woods somewhere, and leave me for the buzzards. I do not want to be pickled and sealed in a box.

Absolutely! Natural burial away from plumbing, sky burial, or being burnt on a floating ship - all sound better to my mortal mind - then rotting away in a claustrophobic box in the ground. I don’t want to add to the city’s corpse water either.

I like the idea of the mushroom casket, basically a biodegradable box that provides nutrition back to the earth. Put me under a majestic tree, and I'm good to go. The underground network of fungus just stuns me. Plus, I just adore mushrooms, I tried the psychedelic kind over 20 years ago, one time, and it was a wonderful experience. Never to be tried again😂 but hell, sautéed in butter, raw on a salad, marinated in a jar...that's my jam!❤🍄

3:08 I love that when discussing early Egyptian mummification, this video used a photo of a heart adjacent to a statue of the Great Old One Cthulhu, which of course has nothing to do with Egypt and everything to do with Lovecraftian horror fiction.
Living in South Jersey, I would have no problems with my body being chopped up, tossed into the Pine Barrens, to be eaten by turkey vultures.

6:18. Interesting cemetery. The crosses marked Geexecuteerd Kendari mean "executed at Kendari" in Dutch. Kendari is a place in Indonesia (formerly the Netherlands East Indies) that was held by the Japanese during WWII. A bunch of Allied soldiers were beheaded there; the war criminals were later executed by the Dutch. If you care to google "Kendari" and read the article at The Pacific War Online Encyclopedia you might find plenty of material for a Weird History video.

I'd like to hear about the cultural practices of Christmas ( gift ) Shopping 🛍 and how some ( like my Mum ) leaves it to the last minute with risk of being part of the Shopping Mall crush crowd ( of shoppers ) . Like for the question to be answered : Which country / countries are the most organised with their collective Christmas ( gift ) shopping & what can we borrow from their practices of the cultural preparations of December 25th . Also might be nice to include what family activities are practiced outside of the home for those who celebrate Christmas ( Or whatever other name it might be called in other places such as in Japan and the holy land ) . Here in Australia 🇦🇺 , after swapping gifts with each-other and unwrapping them ~ we might go to the beach ⛱️ 🏊 Or to Taronga Zoo Or ( if we're unfortunate ) have to pack up the car to escape our home that's under threat of a bushfire ( known as a wildfire in America/Canada ) . ♑️✍️🇳🇴
