Gebelein Man is part of the huge mummy collection on display at the British Museum in London. His story is quite different from the Egyptian mummies you might be picturing, though. Gebelein Man, along with his contemporary, Gebelein Woman, sports the world's oldest known figural tattoos.
The Gebelein mummies were accidentally preserved by their environment, as opposed to the careful preparation later Egyptian mummies underwent. Many other cases of accidental or environmental mummification have been discovered around the world, from Juanita the Ice Maiden and her fellow Incan child sacrifices, to Ötzi the Iceman.

I've always found the stories about natural mummies fascinating.
Me too!
In Ireland we have "bog bodies".
@@jonpayne4931in Newcastle we flush them...
Well now @roonilwazlib3089 , we also have 'bog warriors' a.k.a. 'yokels' or 'dipsticks'. Basically, 'arseholes'. An individual who would slap the change out of your hand and guffaw if you were hoping to corral together the price of a pint.
@@jonpayne4931 I am so enthralled by the "bog bodies"
I’ve been tattooing for 21 years and it still fascinates me to see the ancient examples like this. 👍
There's a pathologist in Mexico who's invented a technique to completely rehydrate the naturally mummified bodies of people who die in the desert, so their remains can be identified by family members. The body I saw was unidentifiable when it went into the solution, but looked completely normal when it came out. It would be fascinating to let him rehydrate one of these mummies, although it would have to be preserved once it is. (And by the way, a Weird History video on that Mexican pathologist would be very interesting.)
Very interesting!
Who?
Ehhh I’m Sure this is fascinating but gross.
@@SiiriCressey his name is Dr. Alejandro Hernández Cárdenas.
@@SuzanneBaruch Thank you.
I love ancient Egypt!!! I would be in the library looking for books about Egyptian art and stories. Even looking at old encyclopedias for information on them. I confess it probably was King Tut that probably got me into archeology.
I've been fascinated with archeology since I saw Indiana Jones (cliché, I know), but it was reinforced by the tv show Bones. The team even solved a suspected murder of an Egyptian person. They found he wasn't murdered after all, he had a brittle bone disease. I love every episode (except for the ones where a member of the team died)....and it's only one of 2 series I have on dvd.
I saw an small alabaster reproduction of a perfume jar our teacher brought back from a holiday in Egypt. She told us about everything she saw. This was back in the mid 1950s when a caravan at the seaside was only dreamt of by most if us.
Finally I got to study an exam course at night school in my late 40s. And watch time team of course.
@@helenamcginty4920 I've never been to Egypt, but I have seen pictures of there from my 9-10th grade geography teacher. He would take weeks out of class to show is slides of all his vacations. Never saw thr same pic twice. I left that class with a love of travel, and I can still remember all the states and capitals.
Y'all be lying this ain't even real u just making these fake mummies trying to hide the ancient Egyptians was Melenated that's facts
The thumbnail is totally what my Dad sees trying to get me up for school. 😂
What an amazing story thanks for sharing.
0:47 The film Clue (1985) must have really resonated with fans over time, the two movie react channels I go to (Rob Squad Movie Reactions and Popcorn In Bed) made reaction videos about it within around a week from each other recently.
It's such a great film!
Q: What's your favorite position. You butter like #copporn.
I was so happy to see he used clue. May they never remake it.
@@AnaMinator Clue is so popular that the channel Secret Galaxy released a film about a group of people playing Clue (which included the host) just weeks ago!
Damn, two Brendan Fraser clips in one video? Sweet!
6:49 The Shallow Graves section is very mind-bending and enlightening!
The Field Museum in Chicago always had a mummy/Egypt area. Always creeped me out.
Boris Karloff had nothing to do with it, I'm sure, lol....
The thought of trying to solve such an ice cold case is fascinating.
I'm not sure if their culture did this like some of earliest found tattooed people, but they believed tattooing in a wounded area where pain was constant. At 1st I thought that's what it was with this but this looks different,it looks like what we've been doing nowadays. This is really interesting.
Acupuncture......I do believe.
@@thegreencat9947 no,they actually tattooed the area and blessed it hoping it would receive the pain
@@classactkirk while acupuncture was discovered. And don't we still pray for the alleviation of pain?
I want to hear about Lina Morgana and what happened on top of the Staten Island hotel in 2008 (2008?) next.
a LOT of us would love to see what you look like? we're very familiar with your voice and it would be cool to put your face to it so we can see who is speaking these wealth of knowledge and historic events. any chance?
I want a sky burial. Just toss me on the roof when I die. Anywho, awesome topic! I love mummies with tats, they’re relatable ❤ oh, and if no to the sky burial, put me in a smoker and put me in a museum. (Future me’s will love to study mummy me’s)🤣
Great topic
Very Interesting Story and Great work by Weird History on delivering that said story
PS: PLEASE! Give Us An Update On Season 4 Of The Timeline Series!
Man I *LOVE* modern medical science
*maybe a bit on ice mummies found in Antarctica...not just the mummified penguins but the human remains as well... also it would be interesting to explore the evolution of tattoos from the primitive symbols to the elaborate ones seen today and in science fiction shows like the expanse with the Belters*
I am interested in you researching all of the discovered dead bodies frozen along trails on high mountain passages like along Mount Everest.
Thanks in advance for funding to *staff and outfit the expedition!* Did you want to pay with #cash or with #bitcoin?
Me too!
Are you going to do one on the Utzi the Iceman
Probably already have
It's possible the hypothesis about holy women in that region being tattooed is correct, but the gebelein man was a holy man and either an exception to the norm, or we haven't found enough evidence to show holy men were tattooed as well. My hypothesis is the two mummified people had religious beliefs that contradicted the group they belong to and they were murdered because of it. Perhaps they were trying to start a religious movement and someone wanted to stop them, permanently
Do a video about Pancho Villa please!
Pancho is dying to tell his story.
I love the Match Game reference at about 8 and a half minutes in! 👍 Well done!
2:59 King Tut was a villian on the Batman tv series (1966).
It's always intriguing to gain insight from where we came from. The preserved remains are us, good, bad or indifferent. I hate to see these facts trivialized by offering parallels to the fake, superficial movies of Hollywood. It does speak volumes as to what is held in high regard. History has to be sacred, not a sitcom.
Very telling how many Egyptian mummies have red hair, not only there but all across Asia.
Could just be a result of age and the absorption of near by chemicals. I have red hair....Nordic heritage.
That's because they drank craft whiskey.
Their hair may actually be black. Red is the next step down. I always wondered if their hair kinda faded from black to red.
The hair which is protein brakes down in color. Today you can see living children in Africa who are starving with red hair. The process of starving has depleted them so much they loose pigment. I have a 300 year old document of my family in England and the black ink is red which means its in really bad shape. Black ink is red has holes where someone folded it its breaking down. It was written on velum. That's sheep skin. Back before paper was used.
9:33 The line of “SSSS” tattoos means that she is getting extra scrutiny in the airport security screening. 😂
The Bull and Ram indicate celestial alignment.....
good thumbnail
The actor Brendan Frasier responded twice to one of my posts for a video interview he had with Kelly Clarkson.
After the first response I told him I remembered when a group of us went to the local movie theater to see Encino Man.
He responded again saying thanks for having such support throughout the years.
I wasn't ready for the thumbnail
Super interesting
How were tattoos done in ancient Egypt?
You just need a point and ink source.
Still widely practiced today.
on one prick at a time.
Ancient mummies in Peru also had tattoos.
Hi Weird History, have you done a video on Lucy?
Exciting thumbnail recommendations at the end of the video, will watch them!
3:14 I will check out that album Dark Lady, I love Cher's singles "Turn Back Time" and "Believe."
Ötzi would've been several shades darker than in the famous image of him; he didn't look like an old Austrian hippie lol.
I thought the title was "The Gelatin Man" at first glance.
5:28 Great commercial!
2:32 anyone else notice the base to the judges gavel in the b roll here is upside down lol
Why do I imagine him getting knifed for getting it on with somebody (willing or not) and that somebody's family or s/o getting justifiably pissed about it.
Pharroh Ambatukum is quite interesting for what he did in the Nile
i hope the timeline series comes back
3:49 The red hair one is Ginger Spice, I named my orange tabby kitten (now cat) Ginger Spice after her!
I would like to see a video about the shaman of Bad Durrenberg (Germany)!
A+ video!
Rad!
Not gonna lie, I thought your thumbnail was a pile of jerky at first 😅
How are you gonna have a super long mid roll ad for this short of a video
4:00 Maybe the S S S S tattoo is an initiation of a snake cult, like the one Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) heads in the film Conan The Barbarian (1982) lol.

He was chilling and billing approximately 1,979,395 days ago. Probably showing his tattoos to his GF.
When I saw the thumbnail for this video, I thought it was the bit of Voldemort’s soul hiding under the bench at charring Cross station
I think a video about famous or infamous people tricked into committing suicide would be pretty interesting

Those tattoos actually weren’t S’s at all. they are actially Zs! Ancient Egyptians would often tattoo the letter Z on them repeatedly to communicate to others they were sleepy and it was time for a nap.
OG freeze dry...
Funny. Gingerella is giving us the Finger. lol
Would’ve been better if he had a “no regerts” tattoo.
do a video about the origins of the modern zombies
Maybe he was a criminal?
They had tattoos back then? Interesting.
I believe the oldest solid evidence of tattoos being on human skin dates all the way back to the 4th millennium BC. I believe we have evidence of tattoos on clay sculptures (as in the sculptures had engravings to symbolize tattoos on a physical person) that date back another 1,000 years even before that.
@@OrNaurItsKat body enhancement.
Recreational cocaine was popular and ravers often went on tattoo binges.
0:44 I am looking forward to the classic Murder Mystery genre to take off in films.
Shows like Murder She Wrote, Columbo, and Father Dowling Mysteries really made the genre a staple of American popular Culture!
beef jerky man
“Well…. How old are they?”
He said 18-21.
“Et tu Brute?”
In the thumbnail, it looks like he's flipping off his murderer. My kind of Flintstone!🖕🤣
Why did they kill hi.... oh.. Ginger. I see now.
0:09 Jane Doe is the name I gave to a community cat that hangs out on our porch everyday, she is a great cat!
She is the mother of the cat Taylor Swift, who hangs out with her all day long.
Her other two kittens, Adele and Billie Eilish, mysteriously disappeared after birth.
Could it be that he came back late from a fishing trip and his wife took him out.
This may not go down well with alot of people but fascinating as it may be, i find it so sad that they are on display . We wouldn't do this to our loved ones who have passed on. Just a thought.
❤
Author of the red bull "joke"... You're fired.
Was this narrated by Stephen Colbert?
..😊
I thought for sure the tattoos would either be tribal or Chinese writing.
That’s Voldemort obvi
You are too glib here. These people are due respect.
Forbidden jerky.
You think the spice girl was named gingerella? 🤦
Looks like Voldemort
Good info, but cringeworthy references that won't age well.
Uîrt hîstrî
They need to give him back to Egypt. Along with everything else they stole.
……I think the historian really like tattooing.
SCAM of a game
That was a ridiculously long ad…. So long that I literally got a youtube ad interruption DURING YOUR AD!!! Sooooooo ridiculous. I understand CZcams is being dbags & starting to not allow you to choose where their ads are but this is beyond annoying that nobody has time for. I’ve been disappointed in content for a while now and am so close to unsubscribing…. I see nothing for spooky season… seriously hoping you bring spooky season, thanksgiving, Christmas, winter holiday content etc or I’m out. Your voice is nostalgic to me, like the voices we heard back in the day of long lost cable/history channel of childhood & have loved this channel for so long but it feels like you’ve run out of ideas… JUST REDO OLD CONTENT UPDATED if that’s the case. Other channels I used to love I’ve sadly had to unsubscribe from ran out of content and pivoted and I miss them & will miss this channel too but time is limited and channels are abundant so… I feel like I’m not being given a choice. I already skip 1/2 of them. And you ask for ideas but never use anyone’s. I am seriously doubting you actually even read comments anymore. Zero interaction and it’s going to be your downfall. It’s like you’ve gotten lazy and complacent and you won’t see this comment anyways. So very sad. I hope you are well though.
EDIT: not saying this was a bad topic
The silly narration destroys any facts. Not going to watch again.
Thanks for this! 🧊 #WeirdHistory #GebeleinMan #GebeleinWoman #Mummy #NaturallyFormedMummies
Looks like the latest "casualty" of israeli/american bombing in Gaza.. The child looks exactly like this mummy.. Burned to the bone
