HOW I ATE VEGAN ON TRAIL | PCT Vegan Resupply

- Hello everyone!
I just wanted to point out that while this was my typical vegan food set-up for MOST of the trail (especially the end, OR/WA) it does not represent exactly what I ate on trail such as town grocery store add-ons, town restaurant food, trail angel meals, etc. This set-up was, however, my ideal/fave resupply foods to eat while on trail. They're all vegan, mostly organic, and actually mostly gluten-free (I'm not gluten-free, but it's a bonus).
Below is a list of all the foods mentioned in the video along with their Amazon links. All are vegan and most are organic. NOTE: If you purchase any of the products by clicking on the specific links I've provided I get a little bit of money to help grow my channel, so MUCHAS GRACIAS advance! :)

I filmed this video using this camera: amzn.to/2D9wHms

Thanks for the tips Dirty Avocado! I met you in 2017 down in the Big Bear area. I was the sobo guy giving out trail magic on the way like chips, candies and via coffee (you were one of the rare people who didn’t take anything though). (I only remember this looking back on my notes from each hiker...but I remembered your unique trail name.) I went vegan this year and am heading out on another section hike so I appreciate the tips! -GoalTech
Michael Irving thank you for this comment. I don’t remember exactly this moment but I’m happy to hear you’re giving vegan a try. Wish you happy trails! - DA
Pro Tip: For single use drink mixes, water additives, etc. Buy the large, economy size pre-hike and portion it out into single servings. To package, use small piece of plastic wrap, dole out mix in center and fold up all open edges. Next, with small strips of aluminum foil, fold over each open edge with foil on each side. Use a medium hot iron and apply to each foiled edge. Let cool a few seconds and remove foil carefully to reuse it for each packet you make. The heat-sealed edge provides a pack-ready, single serving with minimum weight and easy to pack out waste. Save money and ease waste.
All your videos are so great; really enjoyed them all and look forward to seeing you’re future adventures .. thank you
I now feel more confident about being vegan on a trail! It honestly surprises me how bad people eat on a long distance hiking trail! In every hiking video you see burgers and those instant beef meals. Which always made me wondering if getting vegetables or fruits would even be possible. No hiking I've found so far have explained resupplying like you do. So thank you! On my first long distance hike I took al those raw crackers (made from vegetables and flax seeds) with me to have enough nutrients, but the weight of the pack (combined with bad shoes) just did too bad for my body and after about 100 miles I already had to let go of most of the food I had with me. I think that when you are doing your first long distance hike you have to invent the wheel yourself ;p which means that it will be inevitable to make mistakes. No matter how informed you are :) Which is also beautiful because it's part of the process:)
its almost like burgers aren't bad for you
I am so happy to see this! I’ve only recently gotten into the idea of hiking the PCT (or AT), and was wondering how difficult it would be to do as a vegan. Glad to see you’ve done it and it wasn’t a huge deal. Thanks!
What kind words at the end of an awesome and informative video. Thanks! I've been vegan for a year now, and do have a wish of doing the PCT one year soon. Your video was an inspiration!
Yess girl! I have 95% of this stuff on my list for package prep for the AT! So excited to see other people eating vegan on trail (and in general lol)! Thanks for some fresh ideas too! Best breakdown of what a vegan hiker eats on trail that ive found so far!
Thank you for all of the great information and really appreciate all of the links. I think I am (possibly) too old to do the PCT but I am wanting to go more toward becoming a vegetarian. Was glad to see that this is even possible. Hope to meet you some day. Keep up the good work and posting videos. I've watched your PCT Ultralight gear one twice now. Definitely inspiring!
Lisa Archer what?! Never too old to hike!! Glad to hear I can inspire others to eat more veg and to hike while eating veg!! Thank you for watching 💚
Great to hear from a vegan perspective because for a few others that İ previously watch, this guys were basically eating all types of calories. Thank you again
Awesome video, thank you so much! I'm hiking part of the JMT this summer and will be excited to test out some of these options. I love following your journeys, and can't wait to see where you go next!
Claire Hall that’s awesome! I hiked the JMT in 2016 in September and it was so good! Thanks for following along! :)
Thank you. I'm also a vegan, and am planning to hike the PCT this year.
I'm a vegetarian/aspiring vegan and will be hiking the PCT NOBO starting in April. Just wanted to say that I found this video immensely helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Taylor Weixl sweet! Glad it was able to help :)
Loved this. Being Vegan it gets hard choosing things to eat on the go so this video was immensely helpful.
One of the best videos I have seen on prepping food for hiking. Thank you so much! This helps me in my upcoming trip a lot :)
Glad to help! :D
Excellent advice. Thank you for the refs and tips!
Great video. Thanks for sharing all the supply links. Really handy to know.
Thank YOU for watching! And glad I could help the vegan and soon to be vegan world :)!!
You are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and links. I'll be using them to order somethings for sure. Thank you!
Thank you for your video! I am a vegan and am getting into hiking. Your ramen 💣 is a great tip. Also the green drinks you did I want to do. Love Dave’s 🥯 ‘s, love 🥑, and appreciate knowing REI has some vegan dinner options. Very helpful video!!
This is awesome! I just commented on your gear review vid and didn't see this yet. Thanks so much for the info!
Using your info. For the AT, love soups too! Thanks so much, not getting sick and recovery time is amazing on a Vegan diet 👍🏻
love your hiking videos! thanks for sharing!
I love your personality! Your knowledgeable yet humble. I’m not vegan but a lot of that stuff looked really good!
Vegan 🌱, Latina 🇲🇽, ❤️ hiking, can't do coffee... we are the same person!
Rebecca Mendez triplets ✌🏼 lol im the same way.
Terrific! Best food video I’ve seen so far. Cute and funny! Great advice!
+1 to Rice Ramen + bouillon. Good video! thanks!
Well done and nicely presented information. Lots of great information.
Jeremiah Gillam thanks for watching! ☺️
Not only is vegan food tasty and good for you , it's lite weight and most lasts a long time ! I've been checking out a lot of hiking videos and yours is rocking ! Keep it coming girl !
I had to switch over to my trail channel account just so I could like this again. I''ve watched this 3 times already. Also a huge fan of Mary Jane's meals.
I loved those Repunzel bullion cubes. I had them with my instant mashed potatoes. I would heat up some water with half a cube and some dehydrated spinach and kale flakes. Then when it was boiling, I just added a bunch of potato buds. It was quick so I mostly ate them at lunch. I ate a lot of brown minute rice with ad hoc sauces I made up. I always had a little 4 oz. bottle of sriracha sauce.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is such a great (and much needed) resource.
Thanx for watching! Glad I could help :D
Very good information and helpful tips for my 2018 VEGAN PCT thru hike! Thanks!
Great information! This is really similar to what I eat on the trails and backpacking trips as a vegan as well.
Excellent Video... many thanks!!!
Awesome! Thank you for staying true.
:)
Thank you so much. I am just considering to do the trail as well and I was a little bit worried about my vegan diet. It's nice to see that it is possible :)
Hope that my dream about this journey will come true and I will come all the way from Sydney :)
I'm hooked on Daves Killer Bread......thanks Dave!
Really like your energy and channel
Love this! Thanks for posting!
:))
I live in Idyllwild, love that restaurant!! I'm vegan and hiking next year so this was very helpful!!
Im sure you get this alot, but I enjoy your style, all of it. Thanks for sharin
Hell's yes! This made me feel a lot more comfortable to hike the hike while vegan
YES YES YES. Need more vegan hikers out there
I'm vegan too! I love your videos! Sending you Happiness and good vibes!
Thanks for this! I've been looking for different vegan hiking foods👍🏼😁
Glad I could help :)
Yes! I am looking to thru hike next summer and I’m vegan. I’ve done shorter trips but I definitely need advice on adding variety.
Nice! Are you hiking the PCT?
Yesssssss! Thank you! Finally!
Only took me a few months hehehe
Thanks Cotezi! This helps so much :)
Rhian Pickering sorry you had to wait so long lol! Glad I could help 😊
Loved this, thank you!
i watched this and it was so interesting and inspiring!
Aw! Thanks for watching Karen :)
This was super helpful- thank you
Glad I could help :)
Great video! I was so excited to see the veggie broth cubes. I googled them and they contain yeast extract which is basically MSG but not as much. Migraine sufferers would want to stay away. Again, great video!
Thanks! :)
I never experienced any bad side effects from the veggie broth cubes compared to when I eat regular ramen (the vegan kind). Yeast extract is not MSG. Yeast extract contains naturally occurring glutamates while MSG is a highly concentrated, synthetically produced, ultra-potent version of glutamic acid. Plus, most of the ingredients on the cubes are organic so I like that! :)
This is really great. Thank you.
Thank you for being vegan and for spreading the message. I appreciate you making this video so other vegans can learn from it. How many miles did you average a day?
Super helpful!
thanks for watching :)
daves bread kicks ass
Great info, thanks!
no problemo!
I just made the Ramen bomb during my hike into the Grand Canyon and it was delicious :) Definitely a keeper. Thanks for the suggestion!! I included a short clip of making it in my latest video :D
Great healthy and tasty suggestions! Most selections look much more costly than my typical trail food (double to triple the cost)
I got totaly hooked on this devine peanut butter that had chia seeds through it. We dont have it in Australia, and even though im not on the trail at the minute, I soooo crave it!!!!
I have taken your advice on a few good tips already...and now this. Thank you! I’m hiking vegan 2019...
yay!! will you be on the PCT?
Cotezi Hikes yes, starting in 26 days! 😁
Cotezi Hikes I'm not vegan myself, but i loved your resupply video. A nice break from the typical snickers and poptarts video. Great info for anyone who wants to pursue a long thru hike; vegan or not.
Costco sells the rice ramen in bulk now!! We cold soak it and add different seasonings to keep it interesting :)
Amazing!! Vegetarian!! That too in USA!! Nice to hear this. I too became vegan once I came in contact with ISKON. Now I know what I was missing. Hope you inspire many to turn to vegan.
Madam I see you have 7k subscribers. It takes lot of time responding, even it means just to give their comments a like.
So please feel free not to respond.
I am truly an admirer of your style of narration, fluid, down to earth and interesting.
Wish you safe journey always.
Found ya from Instagram. Awesome videos! I am not a vegan but a bunch of good eats I am seeing here.
hello! thnx :)
Thank you for doing this. I definitely want to try the rice ramen. I love ramen!! Going to try some of these things out. You're the best. Vegan is the future. 🌱💚🌎
Daisy Martinez glad I could help! Definitely try the ramen. It’s delicious. Not once got sick of it on trail. #govegan 💚
How is vegan the future. Tell that to an eskimo
matanuska high our evolution was different than Eskimos. They also have higher heart disease rates. Yes, vegan is the future and it is already here.
@@MatanuskaHIGH Ask an Indigenous Eskimo if they appreciate the idea of someone granted the privilege of internet access, normalizing survival strategies as a poor appeal to culture fallacy that will never debunk the philosophy of said vegan lifestyle. The way an Eskimo lives (usually not by choice, but geography / survival) will never begin to justify suffering intentionally inflicted on other beings (human and non-human animals alike) and has nothing to do with you (not) taking personal responsibility for making better (less harmful) decisions. Vegan"ism" is true winfinity. It was here before us and will be here after Morality is not relative. Bodily autonomy matters. Not your body, not your life, not your choice. Live and let live . . . William Crowley nah. It’s just trendy for soy boys.
I LOVE Dave's Killer Bread! such a great vid, thanks! I'm strongly considering going full vegan, and I'd love to see a video about being vegan in general- like what benefits you've noticed, what your favorite foods are, etc. Thanks!
Yeah! I've been eating a vegan diet since 2011 so I feel like eventually I will make a video regarding everything you just mentioned :) Thank you for watching!
You are what you eat! You eat really delicious stuff...
Like your videos, thanks for sharing your experience. I subbed....
You were great! Thanks! 😊 where do I find the “notes” you talked about?
Thanks for this video! I'm wondering what was your total budget for food (resupply + town)?
Awesome, cheers
I'm not vegan, but I am loving some of these tips! thanks for the great video!!! hope to see you on trail one day :)
Don't forget the limes for the Avocados! 🥑🥑🥑
Thanks for sharing your experience! I appreciate it as I learn and get ideas about how to do it myself. (I did find the background music to be more than a bit repetitive and it also distracted from what you were saying.)
NOTED!
Thanks for the video. I think I'll echo what someone else said, better than "pop tarts, etc." resupply strategies.
Very interesting cheers
I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for the green superfood packets and that nut butter spread.
My wife is vegan, and it's sometimes a logistical nightmare planning meals and provisions for her; I really appreciate your making this available.
Of course, np! I love how convenient yet nutritionally dense green powders and nut butters are on long hikes. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the probiotics and nutrients in these things are single handedly the main reason I never got sick on the trail!
Wonderful product source list for vegans. Thank you! Can you calculate approximately how much protein you were getting per day?
Thank you for sharing your PCT nutrition hacks! :) Extremely helpful! I'm vegetarian, and am looking for something other than your typical processed sugar bomb hiking diet. My only concern is the high price on some of these items. What did you typically spend per month on your thru hike?
Great video! I just found you on IG (your phone is probably blowing up with likes right about now) and it's truly inspiring cause you make it look so effortless and doable! I'd like to start hiking soon, so this video is definitely steering me in the right direction!
I'd also love it if you could make a video about your hygiene routine while on the trail --just a suggestion :)
Ariadna Perez hello! Thanks for watching and for following along :) maybe I will in the future but honestly, what hygiene?? Lol jk!
JAjajajaja!! Nuff said!
hey, with the green superfood powders, did you stick with the single serving packs or just bring it in bulk? How much do you think you spent in food for the thru-hike? thanks.
Hi. Single serving packs for convenience! I'm not sure... but I don't wanna know LOL. Nah, maybe I'll make a video if enough people want to know ;)
Karel Blankenfeldt great question
Hey thank you for this video ! just a question I was wondering, with the avocado and the principle of carrying our rubbish out, do you know if it is tolerated to leave avocado skin and stone ?
Laplumetrotteuse tv, Carry it out. Save the seed
Hi! Have you ever had Mary Janes freeze dried cold soaked? Thank you
Hello! Yes, and it's pretty good too.
Can I drive and drop my boxes off instead of mailing them. from cajon 15 south?
you go girl I subscribed when there was about a dozen people looks like your sister and brother-in-law have a little competition going on. although different platforms you're catching up quick good informative video. if you bust out of hula hoop you just might pass them up laugh out loud have a good day enjoy the videos because they are smart fun and informative like your sister and brother-in-law. Paul
LOL Thanxx!! Did we meet in Hawaii?
corresponding now and then with Michael and Pauline. Jill and I are doing extensive research into purchasing on the big island we found them actually Pauline and Kathleen on CZcams she told us that they were going to start a CZcams and we were the first 5 or 6 to subscribe. you two girls remind us of our daughter Ashley. very informative easy explanations. and Michael reminds me of my son Paul Junior. watching them put together off grid life it's difficult now for me not to grab a Hammer and help them fine tune and build their sustainable off-grid Adventure for the price of a coconut and 2 bananas.L.O.L. 3500 views all done without a hula hoop or a hammer great job. hope your sisters doing good and staying healthy. Paul and Jill
I subscribed to your channel mainly because the word Vegan 😍🌱
Where did you buy your beanie/woolen cap? Looks good..
I am also wondering is "AmazingGreen Grass" probiotic. I heard taking too much probiotic is not healthy.
Great video, I have gone WFPB, and due to food addiction issues as soon as I eat foods I should not eat, I have a difficult time going back to healthy. So, I will be doing mail in resupplies. That restaurant in Idylwild sounds fantastic. If you ran into other restaurants that were vegan friendly, and what town you found them in, would be great to know. Thanks, really enjoyed watching your PCT videos.
How often did you generally have to resupply? Or how much food would you carry on you at a time? Like weeks? A month?
Always looking for new ideas for vegan trail eats. Ramen bombs, hell yeah. GET THE JALAPENO CHIPS FROM BOULDER! You're welcome. Great food vid.
Hi!! Ideas for vegan base layers/sleeping bag/warm stuff?!?
Elisa Lazzari
Saw you posted this question awhile ago but here’s what I purchased when I went vegan:
Enlightened equipment has a synthetic quilt that works amazing. Mine is rated at 20 degrees and really keeps me very warm.
Also, I traded in my wool base layers for synthetic ones at Rei. Top it off with a synthetic puffy and I stay very warm and everything is lightweight and animal free.
New subscriber, an outstanding video. Very good information.
Take care, stay safe
O. P. ( Olde Phart )
For bulk vegan choices I purchase from znaturals.com Really fast with shipping. High quality items and bulk brings the cost down. Just need to repackage into smaller packages. Especially in areas where water is readily available I would offset that weight by carrying fresh food and veggies good for a few days. Appreciate the thought here put into nutrient dense foods and not just junk food (candy and mainstream chips and cookies) that I've seen with other vegan suggestions. It is a challenge on the trail as the best vegan choices are fresh foods but this is well thought out vegan trail food. I do like to support organic companies. Thank you! On the TA there were few vegan choices and very little organics especially in the little towns and pit stops. There's always something though and its nice to have the variety with town food. It also could have changed since then.
Love that you ate vegan and organic!!
awesome food..i'm not a thru hiker but this is what i like on a hike /camp U might like to try ..dehydrated re fried beans..instant rice..soy curls, tortilla and taco sauce ...i like it u might..peace
Hey!! Amazing video:) I'm checking out the amazing grass sachets, but I saw a few flavors are not vegan due to the animal derived vitamin D3.
Do you know which flavors are vegan??
(I live in Europe so it is also possible the ingredients are different here)
some good greens are Genuine Health brand fermented greens Vanilla Chai flavor. They also come in single serving packets.. also I think a company called 8 Greens does the little drink tablet thingys... and I love me some Annie's vegan mac and cheese (bring powdered coconut milk) with ritz crackers👍
Never heard of either companies... Good to know there are so many vegan ones out there now and still growing!!
Cotezi Hikes and nongshim soon ramen is the best junkie ramen if you haven't had it before
Never heard of that either lol. Back to the fermented greens, have you ever had garden of life's RAW MEAL powder in vanilla chai flavor as well. SO GOOD!!!
Cotezi Hikes YESSSS!!!! vanilla chai fo life yo.
This is so helpful! But the link for the PCT hiker blog with the resupply spreadsheet doesn't work... can you repost? Leaving next week for the PCT and trying to get my re-supply boxes out ASAP! Thanks!
Have you tried any of the Outdoor Herbivore meals?
Hahaha yerba mate and avocadoes, you must be south american.. :D (this is paulina btw) we watched your video and i love you so much.
CHILENA ALL THE WAY. :) luv u 2.
i like your channel..
Well edited and the content presented in an excellent way
very helpful!
I'm coming from abroad and have to figure how to hike as a vegan in the US.
can you tell how it cost to buy a vegan food for an entire thru-hike?
