- Howdy fellow sublimation peeps! In today’s post, we’ll be focusing on some that few people understand but it makes a HUGE difference in your print quality: Paper Settings for your Epson Printer. Most sublimation users just use Premium Presentation Matte for the most ink, but what if you have extra ink causing issues? Going to a lower setting really seems to adversely effect the color. In our test today, we’ll waste our time, ink and paper to test so you don’t have to!

Why do paper setting affect my output?
Paper settings directly change how much ink the printer is putting down based on the amount the printer expects to be absorbed by the print. The best analogy I can think of involves printing on strange objects on different ends of the spectrum. You’re were pouring black ink onto a porous, absorbent object, such as a sponge. How much ink do you think it would take to make the sponge has a nice, crisp black color? Probably quite a bit. Now, let’s contrast that with something non-porous, such as glass. How much ink do you think it would take for the ink to show up on glass? Not much at all, as the glass isn’t absorbing the ink. Make sense?
While this seems irrelevant to the matter of sublimation, quite the opposite is true. By manipulating the paper settings, we can “trick” the printer into putting more ink down on the paper. More ink in the sublimation paper allows for more ink to be released into the substrate, allowing for much more vivid colors.
What are the different paper settings?
In this “experiment”, we’re going to print one 8.5″ x 11″ of each design. As a control, we will use all of the same settings (High Quality, High Speed Printing Off,
The design will feature a color chart and solid black text. This will be a test of how good the colors are and we will see how prone the setting is to streaks/wheel marks/etc. We will grade each one by comparing how vivid the colors are and how much ink is left in the paper.
What should I use?
Based on those results, you can always get the most vivid colors while maintaining the best black from the Premium Presentation Paper Matte. If that’s the case, why not just use it all the time? Well, with sublimation, there’s a point where the substrate was absorbed the maximum amount of ink that it possibly can. Anything after this point adds addition ink, that has to go somewhere. Extra ink can often lead to blurry or streaky images, particularly on simple prints.
Here’s my general rule of thumb: I use Premium Presentation Paper Matte UNLESS the design is simple (text only) AND heavy on black saturation. If that the case, you can greatly reduce the chances of streaks, wheel marks, and other print issues by switching to Premium Presentation Paper Matte, but with High Quality turned to standard quality. If you’re still running into issues, you can use any of the following paper settings: Plain Paper / Bright White, Letterhead, Recycled, Color, Preprinted, High Quality Plain Paper, or Envelope,

Thanks for the vid! Certainly noticed a difference in my prints after following some of the tips.
OK, so you recommend PPPM with Standard Quality; however, you don't mention anything about color correction. On many Epson EcoTank printers there's additional settings under the More Options tab. It would be great if you would address this as I'm not the only one who is asking.
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you so much! I HATE my wheel marks. I never would've guessed turning the high quality off would help. Thank you Thank you thank you!!
No problem at all!
Thank you so much for this information
No problem at all. It was a fun experiment!
Thanks a bunch!!!
Thank you! I am new to this and have been struggling so much! For the last 2 weeks with color! I cannot seem to fix color issues and this will definitely help! Also, should I be using the cmyk instead of rgb?? I can’t believe this has been so difficult for me ugh
What setting should I use if the premium high quality is printing navy instead of royal blue? I tried plain paper and its more like the correct color. Will changing to standard vs high quality fix that? Or is it more about the paper setting?
You just solved my pizza wheel marks issues! Great video, amazing tests, Thanks so much :)
Happy to help!
Thank you
Hi, Im having so so so many issues with my WF 7720 and is hard to find updated info and help about this printer, I'm a newbie onsublimation, the printer is already converted but I feel like my settings need a looooot of work. My first problem is no matter what I do I CANNOT ALIGN IT VERTICALLY OR HORIZONTALLY it is just very frustrating and my other question is where do I change the paper settings to PPPM? I can see Premium Matte on the printer settings but nothing else, is that the one or am I missing something?
HELP !!
Great info thanks! Not sure if your printer has these settings (I have a 15000) but what color management (ICM, Epson, Adobe 1.8 or 2.2), brightness, contrast, saturation, and density did you use in the color correction | custom | advance section and did you select anything in the maintenance (extended settings) section? Thanks in advance.
was hoping to see this answered.
Me 2
me too
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Standaard paper, standard settings with a good icc file for my epson seems to give the best results. no smearing, deep colors always the best results. the icc file I have is the best for sublimation on epson
What ICC profile are you using?
@@bigkahuna2297 a special created one. I can mail it
@@JunkieVirus could I get it please 😳

So I just recently started doing sublimation printing on mugs. Currently I have been setting the paper to premium presentation paper matte, high quality setting, but I’m getting blurry images on my mugs. The transfer paper I’m using is A-sub 125 G. I’m using Hiippo ink, and standard sublimation mugs. (Got them off of Amazon) What can I do to get a sharp image?
When I use prem pres matte on standard it prints in stripes. Prints perfect on high. What’s up with that?
very helpful! thank you 🙏 my EPSON ECOTANK ET4800 arrives today, do you think it is suitable for sublimation? I already bought the Hiipoo sublimation ink. any suggestions?
Yes, that will work just fine.
My WF-7310 doesnt give Premium presentation matte in the driver settings just 'EPSON Matte" is this the same?
This was a great video!! Thank you! I’m having print issues
is your pppm set with standard or high quality ?
Wat can I do so my image will stop coming up on the right of my paper
Are you willing to share where you got the paper settings graphic color chart that you are using for your test prints?

Hello , I like the way you explained it all.
I have a question , when print from design space on my ep 2760 , the text always overlaps , like is to much ink on the paper ,
Help!!
Turn off bleed. Bleed is for cricut to cut around the letters and not have white showing.
@@angelabamber6329 Thank you Ángela Bamber for taking the time to replay , I’ve turn off the bleed and also I had my printer set on speed print, so now my prints are beautiful!
Great video I have a 7210 and I do not PPPM I have epson matt! is that the same
I believe that would be the same
@@SouthpawsStudio after google-ing it it looks so! Thanks for the reply
Thanks @AkActual I had same question as I only have Epson matte paper option as well! Thanks for confirming it is the same!!!
I just converted my printer and am using presentation matte high quality, I tried premium presentation matte high quality and wheel marks and smudges. I will try standard quality prem. pres. matte, Im using A4 sub paper and a epson workforce 2850 w/chipless firmware.
Have you enabled the "thick paper" setting on the printer itself?
@@SouthpawsStudio I do not know how to do that. I still haven't found out how to slow the printer down when printing. I went to preferences and properties but the fast print box doesn't exist. Any help would be definitely appreciated.
@@SouthpawsStudio where do I find this setting ? Thank you
What paper did you use?
Usually A-sub or Hemadu Tale. They are both extremely similar.
Why is my printer not printing black it looks faded on glossy photo paper or looks brown
Which fabric did you get from Walmart?
Just 100% polyester fabric, white in color.
My printer keeps printing on the right side of my paper instead of the left
Is anyone else having issues with more green showing up instead of black? I need help! Also I am a total NOOB.
I’m having these issues :(
So its not the fact i use a Microsoft windows computer its the paper setting?
Correct. I run a Windows PC.. I don't do Mac
