  • Continuing from the Cheap Choke setup, we could also work into a Ninja Choke, which is like a reverse rear naked choke.
The half guard frame is once again a good way of setting this up, and once locked in it is lights out. It is nice because a lot of people are not used to this type of choke, especially from this entry. Check it out:

One of my favorites. Even if they pass the half, it's still there

Whats interesting to me is honestly I saw the choke and thought "that's just a guillotine with the power finish" as opposed to the high elbow or linked hands. That's what I know it as. But that's kinda rhe thing with grappling techniques, they're so specific that actually there's a lot of utility to giving specific variations their own names. And reframing this as the ninja choke does exemplify it's ability to be snuck onto someone like a loop choke.
It's kinda funny that we have so many back and forth about names in jujitsu and people like me have that knee jerk "x is just a y" reaction ingrained in us... but then we'll still hit the mats, talk shop about the sport and be like "Oh, I see an X choke from there... no, the other one."

Hey Evan! Actually, the Ninja Choke is TRULY different than a power guillotine (and not just a rebranding), although they appear very similar.
The difference being that with a power guillotine, your opponent's head is under your arm pit of your choking arm. With a Ninja Choke, your opponent's head is under your support arm pit. That's why it's unconventional.
But that doesn't take away from your point overall. :)

Interesting choke, thanks for sharing! I would actually call it a "no arm darce" as that's exactly what it looks like to me. Also has similarities to the power guillotine. Either way, nice move =D

It's a pretty established submission. The most two common names for the choke are 1) Ninja Choke and 2) Dirty Choke (my personal favorite name for it cuz that shit be durty).

The first time I saw this choke was back in the 90's from a magazine featuring Jim Arvinitis (a Pankration guy from Boston or something). At the time, I hadn't seen anyone in BJJ use or teach this choke and apparently you can see it used in Ancient Greek artwork. I was surprised it wasn't really utilized in BJJ until the early 2000s when no-gi started becoming more popular as it's basically just an upside down rear naked choke.

I've heard it called a "Farce Choke" as a portmanteau of "Front Darce". Seems like a good way to start a chain.
