Ashi Garami Spinning Kick Pass
While training in a class with Jake Shields, who was covering ashi garami attacks, Alvin and I played around a bit with different finishes and I came up with this. I like it because it really goes from 0 to 100 and puts you on the offensive quickly - changing from being on bottom to top with an aggressive guard pass. Even if the pass doesn't finish, you are going to be on top and have a strong angle

RSB Coyote Hook Hip Bump
zhlédnutí 734Před rokem
This technique was something I have seen Alvin do before, so I like to pick his brain on this position as he likes playing it as much as I do. This one he gives credit to Craig Jones for, but I'm just going to call it the Coyote Hook Hip Bump as that makes sense to me. :) Check out my BJJ Fanatics Courses -bjjfanatics.com/collections/instructional-videos/fighter_david-avellan Join my newsletter...
Reverse Seat Belt Mount Trap Back Take
zhlédnutí 842Před rokem
My friend Alvin Yeh showed me this technique as we were reviewing the Reverse Seat Belt position, and it instantly got my attention. I wish I would have thought of it myself, but I wasn’t going to let a great technique slide away from me, so I asked him to teach it for me. As you can see, it’s a tricky trap move, so I instantly fell in love with it. The trap is set up from bottom side control w...
Seat Belt Throw By
zhlédnutí 827Před rokem
If your opponent is really tight on the Over Hook, and perhaps not giving you the opportunity to switch to the Under Hook, that makes a throw by a great option. The tighter the Over Hook, the more effective the Throw By is. We are simply doing a windmill motion with our seat belt arm, unwinding our opponent’s Over Hook and throwing it in front of them. This gives us an easy back take with minim...
Seat Belt Switch to Under Hook
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed rokem
The Seat Belt position is a classic wrestling scramble position. You can easily get into this position off a failed body lock attempt, where your opponent attempted to counter you with a Harai Goshi (like we covered a few days ago), but you were able to let go of your body lock and post out. The Seat Belt position is a 50/50 position - either man can win under the right circumstances. Today, we...
Over Hook Far Side 2 on 1
zhlédnutí 727Před rokem
This is a little tricky move you can hit from the Over Hook when your opponent is not guarding their free hand carefully. You can initiate this off them grabbing your wrist (preferred) or you can grab their wrist. Either way, we or can pass their free hand to your over hook hand and secure a strong pin. You will now have both their arms trapped with one arm, leaving you with a free hand to atta...
Over Hook Fireman's Carry
zhlédnutí 2KPřed rokem
Even when you are struggling to dominate the shoulder, you can still catch your opponent with a Fireman’s carry. A good Fireman’s carry gets your opponent's feet off the mat quickly, so that they can't work to counter you or put you into compromising positions like a back crucifix. It is used well when you can get your opponent driving into you, so you can fall underneath them and make them loa...

Great moves!
This content is gold, thnx for sharing!
I Can’t pass guard when mounted; my instructor showed me how to bridge and push off into a shrimp (hope that makes sense), but I struggle with that when my opponent puts their weight on me, can you show other ways to break a mount?
Bridging is hard to achieve on skilled opponents. I believe that the kipping escape is the best mount escape, followed by the basic shrimp or hip escape. I cover the kipping escape on my website, davidmma.com

Great video! Been training for ages, and on Monday I did a nice slow shot to get warmed up and my knee sounded like bubble wrap! I not in much pain, it was stiff and now it feels janky & hurts to bring my heel to my butt. Will start working on this next week!
I miss fighting. But if you lead with your head, I'm leading with an elbow Lol. I liked your video sir. 💯💯💪
Great! I found this now. But goat never fight Gordon would say when you add steroids it’s much better because steroids are not illegal 😂😂😳🤣🤣🤣…
Great technique and video! I needed this, thank you!
Beautiful technique!
Where could i find more about this guard/style of armbar?
Is that a microphone or camera on the hat? Thanks for the video
It's a microphone 👍
Awesome tutorial!
I've been finding this a lot lately, especially when they try to hide the arm or stack me. A couple times the guy got some air and I decided to let it go because I didn't want to slam him that hard. Thank you.
Wonderful instruction! Thank you for sharing!
Bottom player was begging to get stockaded
🙏
Isn't that the wrong grip for the reverse kimura? Your gripping hand (left hand in this case) should be palm up. That is the way I have always done it. That way you do uppercut motion to put the kimura lock on. You get more movement with palm up.
If you were using the reverse Kimura to submit, then I would agree that the upward facing palm is better. In this case though, I'm using it to control and ultimately sweep. You also notice I'm using one hand to control the grip, so upward Palm would be an easy escape as he could just rip up. With a downward Palm, his wrist is trapped between my hand and my hips, so I get to use the free hand to hit the flower sweep.
Whats the attack when he posts hand?
In this series, I switch to an elevator sweep (hook sweep, sumi gaeshi) on the side they posted on
love it
Look at this beast .Your looking good David just awesome
It's like chess
hello David, im a bit late, but id like to know, what was the extend of your leg injury after the Palhares match in 2011? And do you feel that he played fair and released after tapping?
I have covered this several times over the years but a quick recap: just sprained and partial tears. I was walking around a week later and training one month after. Regarding the out of bounds heel hook, there has been many videos showing that the ref called a stop to the match before he cranked it and I tapped, and you can see I stop defending after the ref put his hands and called stop, then I get cranked. At that point, I had already popped my knee and it should have been a disqualification in my opinion, especially given his history of disregarding the rules. The restart was by the rules, although I didn't agree with the starting position (was much worse than I left off), but the final crank was the most damaging but at least he stopped when the referee intervened. The lesson I learned from this experience is you never stop fighting, even if the referee gets in the way. You have to make the referee literally separate you and work for it, because I have seen too many times were people get hurt or lose position because they stop and their opponent keeps moving and then the ref doesn't know how to restart. It's another reason why I hate out of bounds, and would prefer a cage - less referee involvement.
i think Palhares is totally on board with that..that fighting until the ref pulls you away thing^^@@DavidAvellannah seriously, not only did he injure people for lifetime, he also used his name as a psychological weapon against his opponents to gain advantage..not sure if hes intelligent enough to be aware of this-he literally looks 50% Down-Syndrom-but his trainer and team for sure is aware of that effect.
Good stuff man... I really liked the kimura trap vids. so many ppl showing bs moves on yt. This is quality techs!
Wow!!!!!!!
Just love your teaching just awesome platform!!@
Right foot to the chin.
Great stuff.
I'm suddenly having a flashback to the "wristlocks don't work", and "standing armlocks don't work" statements... :D
This bigger dude keeps body locking me in JJ I always fight hands and try to heist out but so hard to wrestle out. This is a great option im great at the sag head lock so this can be easy to throw in hopefully.
You guys ever do clinics or seminars? Travel at all? Thanks!
I do, but rarely. Anyone who is interested can visit my website to make an inquiry: davidavellan.com
Thank you so much so clearly and simply demonstrated. Please keep posting I know your view count is low but hopefully the channel grows this is quality stuff.
Beautiful video.. I will be trying these, thank you.
Hi is there any way for me to get the kimura trap system dvd or book
Unfortunately not. Those sold out many years ago. We only have online streaming available now, which in my opinion is better, since the quality of the video is much higher than DVD and can be accessible anywhere. The book is available as an ebook at kimuratrap.com when you order the online version.
Can you do uchi mata sukashi no gi
Waste of a heel hook 😢
Very cool thank you. Was that roxanne modafferi lurking in the background?
Yes it is 👍
And Misha!
"Rather than go for the heel hook"? That just doesn't make sense.
Depends on the situation. For example, you are in a street fight and there are multiple opponents. I wouldn't want to be stuck on my back. I would rather swept and get a dominant position quickly, and have the option to disengage if necessary
@@DavidAvellan that's true.
Size and strength matters, especially is the bigger guy has a good wrestling blast double leg. Boxers always think they'll take out anyone UNTIL they go two feet in the air from a double leg. There is a reason ZERO boxers enter an octagon.
Can you go over front headlock escapes and mount escapes specifically the kipping escape. Thanks for all the great content David.
Cool! I've always struggled to decide what to do after hitting the ashi sweep if i can't finish the straight ankle lock ("experienced white belt" writing). Do you know if the step across would be considered legal in an IBJJF seeing? Or would it be consider a reap and a DQ? Apologies, IBJJF is the main game where i live.
I'm not well versed in IBJJF rules, but from a reaping standpoint this could be problematic.
Glad you’ve been posting again David.
This is a good one for tournaments that don't allow heel hooks
What's the thing on your head?
It's a microphone. Necessary to capture the audio since this is a big gym with lots of noise.
Will this work standing as well?
Haven’t spent much time checking my subscriptions. I’m glad I did and binged your channel! You’re such a no nonsense straight to the point teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge David.👍🏽
Outstanding!
Nope! I see a perfect opportunity for a duck under. Possibly a high crotch, maybe even a trip or reverse throw. Basically any good counter wrestler has a good shot at taking you down.
You are going to have a really hard time shooting when you have no arms to grab a shot with. Your shoulders are also locked up, so trying to do a duck under will be very hard. A trip might be possible, but as the person with the better grips, I'm in much better position to trip. I suggest you play around with the position first and then reassess your options, as I'm sure you would arrive at the same conclusions I have.
@@DavidAvellan well you’re supposed to react to the move not wait until you’re trapped. I stand by my assessment. It’s called counter wrestling.
@@markreid6816 sure. That is true of any move. If I know you are doing a double leg, I can counter in many ways: sprawl, iowa, lateral drop, harai goshi, etc. Does that mean the double leg is a bad technique? Certainly not.
@@DavidAvellan here’s the thing, I’ve wrestled for about twenty years, admittedly not at a high level. I’ve always been a counter wrestler. ANY move is a good if done successfully. As a counter wrestler I would give you a position,on purpose, knowing I can counter it. When I see someone demonstrating a skill I immediately think about countering it. Could I beat this guy? Absolutely not, but in my day I would have had no problem stepping on the mat with him. I love the sport of wrestling so much that I’m always thinking about it. Now if you add MMA to the mix I wouldn’t stand a chance.
@@markreid6816 that's great Mark. I have been training mixed martial arts for over 26 years now. My base in martial arts was wrestling, as I started my first 3 years of training in highschool wrestling. While my folk-style wrestling credentials are amateur (as I stopped wrestling in college), I pursued NHB (No holds barred, the predecessor of MMA) and got into grappling afterwards. In grappling I have competed in 5 the ADCC Submission World Championships, having placed bronze in 2009, which is the pinnacle of competition in grappling. For MMA, I have trained with all sorts of top level athletes and wrestling stand outs like Phil Davis, Michael Chandler, Jake Shields, and more. I still train to this day, and travel around the world looking to learn more. I say all this to make it clear that I understand wrestling, have trained in rooms with high level wrestlers, and know what moves are solid. I wouldn't be peddling trash moves, as I know in my academy I teach moves that are effective for sport, but more importantly for self defense. If you think I'm wrong, that's fine. We will just have to agree to disagree. But I'm working this in a training room with young athletes in various leagues (UFC, Bellator, OneFC) at a gym with a heavy wrestling focus. I have not had one person counter me off this technique. At best, they escape. So you can do with that knowledge what you will. :)
We used to call this a knee Kata-guruma when I used to do Judo.
