Building the Tamiya 1/48th Scale F-15C "Eagle" Fighter Jet

- čas přidán 27. 07. 2017
- This video chronicles my build of a 1/48th scale McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle fighter Jet - Tamiya kit #61029.
I used a mixture of black shading, the marbling/mottling technique, pre-shading, and panel washes to exhibit a weathered effect on the model.
Clips of the construction, sanding, masking, overall painting and detailing of this model are shown.
I deviated from the decals supplied in the box to custom brand this jet as a Lakenheath RAF based U.S. F-15.

not gonna lie, probably one of the most informative videos, learnt a lot from painting techniques to weathering techniques. thanks:)
Hi Tom, that's great! There are many ways of doing things to get much the same results often. However, the techniques that are the most comfortable for the hobbyist to utilize usually enhance the experience and the end product.
Fabulous job. After 40+ years, the Eagle remains one of the baddest fighters on the planet.
I spent 3 years on Okinawa working on the SR-71 and Kc-135 tankers. Across the way were the F-15C models. I watched hundreds taxi by, take off and land, as well as fly overs. Your painting brings out a lot of details that were visible on these hard worked jets. You did a great job on detail and creativity. 👍
Hi happycamper137, so many exciting things you did see for sure! I'm glad you feel that I've captured some of that realism of a working military flightline jet! Thanks for your service! ✈️ 😎
Looks great!!! It’s funny how models are like paintings... they don’t seem to look right until the final 20% of work is carried out. Then it all comes together! Nice job on the weathering!!!!
Thanks!
Great build and amazing result. Definitely one to be proud of.
Thanks for the generous comments! For me, it's one of the best I've ever built to date. I'm very happy with it!
Absolutely stunning work. Love how you made the LN stencil. The weathering is just mind blowing
Thanks Sherbir! I'm thrilled so many viewers are enjoying this video!
h
You worked on these aircraft-cool! I worked on F-14, F-111, and the A6 and EA6b back in the day. Even went to Iran (the were our ally attm) as a civilian contractor in '78.
the prowler is such an interesting looking aircraft
Awesome video, this should be a template for all modeling vids. I have been painting by hand for years, and for the first time I am tempted to go out and get an airbrush.
Hi Patrick, thanks very much! Using an airbrush has been a big game changer for me. Now, if I couldn't use one for my model building any longer, I wouldn't continue with the hobby. 😇
Watching all of your videos. Very informative. Thanks
Thanks WADIII!
Absolutely loved the idea of camo templating from the instruction manual, such a great idea. I am just about to start my own F-15C Tamiya soon and whilst I do not have an airbrush just yet there are many things in your video that have helped me and given me the confidence to try. Beautiful build, I can only hope I will be able to produce work like yours one day. Thanks!
Hi MrDutchy83, good luck and I'm glad to hear that the video might help out on your project. 🙂
Wow, great job. Thanks for the airbrushing and weathering techniques. It's definitely all in the painting!
Thanks David! Yes, an airbrush definitely improves results even for the beginner.
SPECTACULAR! The finish you achieved on the engine nozzles is amazing. THANK YOU for sharing your talent, skills and creativity with your viewing audience.
Thanks again, Lawrence! I'm so thrilled that you're enjoying the "series". ;-)
You did a really nice job on this F-15C. The F-15 is my favorite fighter as well, next to the F86. I really like the paint job. Thank you for sharing your techniques! Joe M.
Hey Joe, thanks for your comments! The internet is indeed a great way for us to share and learn from each other. ;-)
Fantastic video!! End result is an amazing F-15! Job well done!
Wow, thanks JE!
Agreed! Your instructions are so clear and easy to understand. Great final piece!
Thanks Aaron, I hope it helps in your future projects!

Everything Tamiya does is the best. More in-tune to their R/C cars, but getting into their models.
Great build! Amazing results. I have discovered your channel just recently, so its a real treat to watch the leaps and bounds youre making from one build to the next. As always, the personal experiences you describe in the narration are wonderful and make your vids truly unique!
Thanks for your support gnashings!
Great build, a beautiful job on this F-15.
Thanks mr.modern44, I appreciate it!
Beautiful job
I used to build fighter jets models myself and tried to really detail them so I really appreciate your work, Bravo !
Thanks Jim!
A masterpiece as a result! Thanks, your videos are a joy to watch.
Thanks tpochep, your comments are certainly much appreciated!
the Eagle is my fav too....just incredible build..great job!
Thanks for the comments!
You never forget the excitement of opening a new model. My son and I used to make them years ago. Waiting for me two grandsons to get a little older, then we’ll start haha
Certainly a great activity to share and pass on as a family tradition!
I dont think I could ever put one of these together! Amazing video! Incredible patience!
Thanks Rohan!
Max, really nice video. Truly appreciate you taking the time to make this video and put it online. Very informative! Thanks again!
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate that. I'm always glad to hear someone got some entertainment out of the efforts put into the whole endeavor.
I worked on F15s at Holloman AFB and am doing an F15c and an F15a Tamiya kits. Thanks for the weathering and detailing tips to help my models look a little more detailed.
Hi Kenneth, that's awesome! I'm glad the video might help 😃
Beautiful build ! I see these Lakenheath birds a lot where I work, would like to build one myself after seeing yours !
Absolutely beautiful work! Love your weathering effects. Plan to build my version of this kit soon so thanks for the inspiration from Daragh in Ireland. Take Care!
Thanks so much Daragh, good luck with the build! 😃
Great tips and ideas (the best kind of modeler). I saw this kit today and may go pick it up. Thanks!
Have fun Christopher!
Fantastic build one of the best I've ever seen. You should be very proud of your tribute to one of the most iconic aircraft of all time.
Thank you for the nice message Diesel Power!
great video love the inclusion of facts about the aircraft! Keep it up!
Thanks Godzilla!
I'm planning to start my first jet in 1/48 (and 2nd model in that scale). Thank you for making this excellent video. I'm primarily a 1/35 armor modeller so building aircraft is going into uncharted waters.
Good Luck James, and have fun!
I used to live in Brandon so as soon as you said, "LN", I knew it was Lakenheath. The flight path went over my garden and that unique sound as the throttle was momentarily pushed, just amazing and I still don't know what caused that amazing sound. You'd also hear it on take-off, just this amazing WHOOOP sound. I'd sit in the car park at the end of the runway and watch. By far my fav US fighter as well. Your build looks amazing. Just amazing. Well done and thank you for sharing.
Thanks oliverdots, glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice build of this aircraft ! My home town was St Louis Mo. Where this and the f 4 was from. I even knew one of the chief designer's who made them possible ! He also built his own r c aircraft and took his son and I flying . Very nice guy
Hi Kevin, thanks for the interesting story and background 🙂
Very inspirational! I have the F-15 on my kit-wishlist but in 1/72nd scale! A kick ass aircraft! Thanks for a great build video!!!
Thank you! I hope you get a chance to build that F-15!
F-15 is such a handsome aircraft. It seems to me to have the most perfect silhouette and proportions of modern fighters, aesthetically.
It's quite a large fighter too!
Brilliant build, Fantastic video.
Thanks Barry for your comments! Seems like this video is doing well ;-)
another fantastic build my friend . inspirational.
Thanks Mark, it looks like this will my most popular video for a long time.
Many thanks for a great build and video, building the very old Hobbycraft F-15e so thanks for the tips.
Thanks Weekend Modeller, I hope you have fun!
I was a Crew Chief on F-15s, Desert Storm Veteran, awesome job, I enjoyed watching this. Maybe someday I will build one. Inspiring, realistic looks.
Hi chad3718, glad to hear it! I especially got up close to the Eagles when we did dissimilar flight ops against the F-15's from Klamath Falls. Thanks for your service!
What Unit? 1st FW?
Great build and wonderful tips.Thank you👍
Hi The majestic magnificent , so glad you liked the video! 😊
Perfect Build Eagle Fighter Work~
RC Thanks for the comments!
Great job! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks zeroa6!
Thats a really reasonable build of the Tamiya kit. I like your explanation of what you are doing as the video progresses.
Cheers IPMS Aukland ;-)
Your Talent and patience is absolutely satisfying to watch.
Thanks Joegen Lo, I appreciate the kind comments! 😊
the most important thing is to have fun! happy modelling!
Thanks nikolaos!
Bookmarked all your videos! You really do it differently with your painting.. I have watched others do it, no one does it like you. Very nice you inspire me to go back and do modelling again.. I just need to find time. lol!
Time is the definitely the most difficult element, always short on supply! :-)
First-class work. Well done!
Thanks again!
Nice work, took me a long time to figure out camouflage lines, with the little blur and a sharp line! Well done.
Thanks Cris, keep 'em flying!
Very nice model and very nice video. I'll look for more of your work!
Thanks Ken!
WOW!!!! Learnt so much from this video. Also very educational with the side notes about the aircraft.
Hi Edward, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The boy did well, fantastic video, really enjoyed watching it, love the many different skills and techniques used to produce an absolutely fantastic scale model. Was particularly impressed that you managed to complete this model to a UK (Lakenheath) original spec. Well done mate !!
Thanks for the awesome comments Robert!
You under-rated yourself. That is a very realistic looking model & I learned so much here!!! Great job man!
Thanks Running Out of Air, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Agreed. Very good modelling skills indeed. And a very pleasant narrative style.
Very nice.
I live very near Lakenheath. I built this. The F100 super saber and the F4 phantom. All with decals for the 48th TFW that have been based there.
Thanks! Lots of great aviation history there!
I'm working on one right now ! can't wait to finish it
Good luck! 😄
Now that’s a beauty !!! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Great job. Lots of good advice and instruction.
Thanks, I hope you find it useful for your projects!
I just built this exact model. "Loaded." I have advanced to *maybe* 75% of your skill at this time. It is an excellent kit to work with.
Lastly I built a 1/48 Grumman S-2 'Cal Fire' water bomber, with custom paint scheme, and decals. *It was a big challenge* !
Hi, I liked this kit too even though the nozzles are incorrect. Sometimes, the big challenges are rewarded with great results. We can only hope! 😇
Beautifully done !
Thanks Kings!
excellent job. It looks amazing
Thanks J.J.!
Thank you for your service!
👍🏻
Looks fantastic.
Thanks Roger!
Ha! I actually have an old photograph of my first weapons crew standing in front of the very jet you modeled! 164. Was a Grim Reaper from 93-99. Great work, beautiful model man.
Ha-ha! What a happy coincidence, thanks for watching Trippylummox!
Great video. Keep em coming !
Thanks for the encouragement!
Brilliant work love the F15
Hi E Mike Polowyj, glad you like it. The F-15 is one of my favorite fighter aircraft.
Great build👍, I built this kit several years ago as well.
Thanks! I bet this brought back some memories for you.
great choice in the build im former USAF an the F-15 is my favorite never flew them but being a pj is awesome
Thanks Daniel! I am a former USAF/ANG F-16 flightline avionics guy. I got to see F-15s up close when we went TDY and flew dissimilar ACM
Daniel Webb you weren’t a pj probably.
Fantastic job!
Thanks Andrew!
looks great...love it
Thanks Christianto, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Hey that was great. I’m just getting back into hobby after 30 year absence. The F15 looks great. I ha e that model in my stash.
Hi jd duran, happy that you liked it and that it may help you in your own F-15C build! 😃
that's awesome brother being around fighters up close would be great but I was a pj in the USAF so we both had different jobs good to see some else who served in the USAF as I did bro thanks for your service bro
I salute you, sir! My flight leader in basic training joined to be Pararescue.
Outstanding!
Hi Wally, it's an older build when the channel was young, but thank you kindly! 😊
I’ve just seen this video. A beautiful build and your paint guide was very helpful.
Hi Jas, very happy to hear you enjoyed it and that the information was useful to you 😃
@@MaxAfterburner you’ve given me so many new ideas.
Another video enjoyed, thank you. I had a close encounter with one of these and quite possibly a Lakenheath F15. I had walked up Stake Pass, Great Langdale, Lake District UK. I was at the top of the pass when I heard the F15 approaching. The pilot waived at me as he passed by and entered a barrel role. He then accelerated down Langstrath towards Keswick and vanished rapidly. It was rather exciting to be honest.
Thanks Mark 🙂 You got your own personal air show from that F-15 it sounds like!
Fantastic build video mate! I made this very kit myself about 5 years back, and it was a very fun build indeed...
Keep up the good work :-D
Thanks Aaron!
Very nice! I was at Lakenheath in the late 80's in high school. The F-111's were there interrupting my algebra class.... it was awesome!
Got to go to Mildenhall and watch the C141's and C5's leave and come in also. Of course the tankers and SR-71's were the icing on the cake.
In my college days, we were buzzed by A-10s and A-7s mostly. Ah alas, there are no C-141's and SR-71s flying now. I'm not sure if there are any F-111s out there anymore.
australia had them until 2011 i belive but i dont think there are any active birds any more
This was one of the first Tamiya aircraft kits i ever built. my uncle gave me one for my birthday back in the mid 1980's. I did a fairly decent job with the painting etc considering i wouldn't discover airbrushes for a few more years. The big mistake i made though, was trying to secure the nose weight with a lot of polystyrene cement. The nose cone melted somewhat leaving a disfigured nose cone :( Still, everything behind the nose looked pretty good :)
I learned a lot from that kit, mainly that too much cement will melt the plastic, and was able to put most of it to good use in later kits.
Brilliant just about to start one of these myself congratulations on an amazing build :-)
Hi Mark, thanks and good luck with your build 😃
wow well done! that is some pain staking work!
Thanks supersonicwings, it definitely tested my patience at times, but it paid off!
Truly amazing !
+1 Subscriber from France !
Merci!
VERY NICE Job sir. I'm preparing to get an F-15C and will be Painting it in the LA Colors also. Will very likely use your video for my reference points.
Thanks Dennis, I wish you success and much fun on your F-15C build!
Hi, Ahh...I only can dream to do what you have done, really. Thanks for the video...love it.
Thanks M.H.! It looks even better in person than on the video, but I'm still amazed on how well it came out for me. You never know until you give it a go. ;-)
I had watched this before but came back when I had fit issues, glad it wasn't just me! A bit disappointed in the kit but it was cheap and it turned out decent in the end. Thanks for the work on this a while back!
Hi VooDoo Nights, glad your project worked out in the end 😃
Superb job!Nice vid!Thx!
Thanks SMD!
Great video and build. I find yours more informative and pleasant to watch because of your voice over and minimal background music.
Came out great max
Thanks Damian! The F-15 is one of my favorite jets!
Really a fantastic video & model, job well done
Thanks Kairasp!
This model turned out awesome! I recently got back into modeling aircraft and found your channel to be very educational I have applied a lot of your techniques, I love how much information you provide such as paint color, mixture, etc. Your channel has helped me become a little better then I was before, keep up the great work!
Hi Nattybug and Daddy, thanks for sharing. It's always nice to hear when viewers may have gotten something useful out of the videos for their own model projects.
@@MaxAfterburner for sure, I have watched all of your builds so far and have learned a lot of great techniques, I just need to work on my weathering a bit still haven't got the hang of that yet.looking forward to your next build my friend.
Nice one. Really enjoyed.
That's very kind, thanks Gerry!
A very beautiful F-15 C.
Why thank you Dark Knight 13, I appreciate it!
Excellent video. Entertaining while also informative. Awesome result on the F-15. Well done mate.
Thanks James C! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
What's next... an F-16 perhaps?
Actually, I am planning to do an F-16C with a complex camouflage pattern in the near future :-)
Beautiful!
Thanks Kenneth, I appreciate it!
Another great build man...
Thanks, I'm really proud of this one!
Nice work!
Thank you Eric!
my dad has a trasformer and its a toy but its so realistic and it has flaps airbrakes and cockpit dome functions its SO cool.
I wonder how many of these model jets and planes he has all up and if he has a display room for them all?? Either way this is utterly fascinating to watch :P
Thanks for a great, informative, and humble video :)
Hi Timothy, thanks! 😊
Awesome,ready for takeoff.Great work.
Roger, Sham One, you're clear for takeoff, runway heading, switch to departure frequency! 😄
