Building the MPC 22 inch long “Eagle” Transporter from Space: 1999

- In this 31st amateur model build, we’ll take on the Eagle transporter model from the TV Series Space: 1999. We construct, paint, and weather one of the best Science Fiction spacecraft designs of all time from a set manufactured by MPC -- kit number MPC825.
2022 was a personally devastating year for me with the loss of Mooch and then Sophie soon after. I probably shouldn’t have attempted a model build as I lacked the focus necessary to do the best job that I could.

It's a crying shame that models of this sophistication are all but phased out in so called modern movies. They just give you an aesthetics and a feel that can't be reproduced by CGI.
You did the Eagle proud. I love it.
Hi Capt.Turner, practical models and effects still much better than CGI ! 👍
This really is probably the most realistic-looking space craft made for movie/tv.
Hi Davey, it's stood the test of time in popularity to be sure! 😎
It is for it's original purpose. But it gets used unrealistically in the series, for planetary landings, when it is clearly designed for vacuum use. But yes, I could see a real version of this being built for transporting personnel and equipment around the lunar or other airless moons surfaces and into lunar orbit. If we're stuck with chemical fuels, the tanks would need to be bigger.
NASA is drawing plans to build the Eagle for use on the moon.
@@stainlesssteelfox1 The Eagle has all the glide characteristics of a brick.
For that you would have to go to 2001: a Space Odyssey."
fabulous nostalgia, i feel space 1999 and it's magnificent space ships have been ignored for decades.
Couldn't agree with you more. Through viewing this video, it made me realise how much attention Star Trek gets, and yet Space 1999 gets almost completely ignored. Loved this series so much as a kid. Very tempted to get the Blu Ray release of this show.
I'm surprised they haven't attempted a remake like everything else. 🤔
The series was shown in German television about 1976-77 when I was 6 years old. I was deeply impressed by it. The german title was „Mondbasis Alpha 1“. Great Job of building this wonderful eagle!
Tag Heiko, das ist interessant -- "Mondbasis Alpha 1“ 🧐. Was it dubbed, or were there subtitles? Glad you liked the Eagle! 😃
@@MaxAfterburner
It was dubbed.
Subtitles were very rare even at that time (and before, and after). When I was a kid (60s) all TV-series ("Flipper", "Lassie", "Bonanza", .... you name it) were dubbed. Often they even had a german version of the title song. In fact I can't remember any series which had subtitles.
Wäre schön wenn man die Serie irgendwo kostenlos stream könnte. Hätte Lust darauf mir das an zu schauen
@@AlexanderScapin such doch hier mal nach Space 1999. da gibts jede Menge komplette Folgen. Allerdings auf Englisch, soweit ich mich erinnere.

When i was a child (1977/1978) i was 7 or 8. A friend of mine had this Model (made out of metal) and he lend it to me so i could played with it. What a cool time i had. I allways will remember this Ship, it has a special place in my heart.
Thank you for sharing your work.
Hi Mad-Dog-Mac-Gee, ah, when we were young and life was simpler 😇
My brother had the corgi version that carried the nuclear waste containers, which could be lowered on a cord with a magnet on the bottom!
The most iconic spacecraft ever. I hope, we will get an Eagle Mod for Starfield!
I loved the series when I was a kid, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I always enjoy your videos for the background information to the subject.
And of course a beautiful model as usual!
Thanks much AI 😃
Likewise! I'd loved all the Gerry Anderson stuff up until then - that I could remember, or had seen -(a little bit of SuperCar), Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet, and then UFO! Missed most of Joe 90, and that Secret service one... Whatever, Thunderbirds was always the favourite, followed by Stingray! 🙂
Yaay, the Eagle has landed. Only one of my favourite TV shows as a kid! Great to see you back Tom! 😉 As for "amateur model build"- methinks not.😂
Hi Steve, glad you liked it and that it brought back memories of Alpha. I don’t think this one will do all that well and I quickly bled off some subscribers. But, what can one do? I already finished the warm-up intro to #32 a couple of months ago and I’m very pleased with it. I did my first sprue cuts and piece gluing yesterday on you-know-what for this next one. ”That’s one small step…” 😇😎😉
@@MaxAfterburner At the end of the day, the most important thing is to make these videos for yourself. The subscribers who enjoy all your work will stick by you. My philosophy is simple, enjoy different models for the variety they offer. Never truly appreciated how complex this model is. The thing I have always loved about Space 1999 is how much of the equipment is grounded in real world technology that we can relate to.
Very well done! Great video, superb step-by-step approach - nice inserts and love the old movie clip. May Sophie remain in your thoughts forever
Hi Martin, thanks for my Sophie and I'm happy you enjoyed the Eagle presentation 😃
Another great build by the legendary Max Afterburner! Thank you for sharing with us this ;overly and nostalgic build of the most crash landed spacecraft of all time! Sorry to see the passing of the last of your great five - may their memories forever warm your heart on the cold Arizona evenings while you make you next build!
Hi Tex, thanks very much for the kind and thoughtful comments, very much appreciated 🙂
There was a joke in the SF fan community that Moonbase Alpha's automated Eagle factory had got stuck in the "on" position after the explosion that threw the Moon out of Earth's orbit and the people in the Moonbase had to crash at least one Eagle each episode to prevent them from being overrun with new-build Eagles.
🤣
Stunning result! Didn't realise just how large the final model would be. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing your next build
Hey St382, it's a nice size and a 44" version would be magnificent if that ever became available. I hope you'll enjoy Project #32 when that one gets done. 🤩
Thanks for the video and on the last segment it is so sad when they go. I lost my chocolate Lab in Jan 2022 and I still think about him every day, had him from a pup held in one hand. Loved that hound like a child. We gave him a good life and love everyday but still the loss hurts. RIP George Boy.
Hi Spartanm333, so sorry for the loss of your beloved doggie.
🙏 So sorry to hear the Depatures of Mooch & Sophie in 2022 ... May their Souls be Blessed to a Better World & Realm ... Thank You So Much for building this MPC Space 1999 Eagle Transporter ... Brought back many fond memories of the Space 1999 era ... 🙏🌷🌿🌏💜🕊
Hi Toma Hawk, glad you enjoyed the Space: 1999 Eagle and all the memories it brought back. Thank you for your thoughts on Mooch and Sophie.
The series ran on WGN-TV 9 in first-run, Sundays at 5.30p. After the series became a hit, WGN started showing repeats Tuesdays at 7p. Then during the summer of 1976, the series' repeats were moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7p.
Second season, the show was back on Sundays at 5.30p and left the schedule after "The Dorcons."
In the fall of 77, reruns Sundays at 5.30p picked back up through spring 78. Then, it was gone again.
In July 79, calls to the station got 4 weeks of repeats Sundays at 10a to help promote Space:1999 Con 79 in Pittsburgh.
WGN burned off the broadcast rights putting the show on in various overnight time slots as filler through 1981.
The series was picked up by WGBO-TV 66 and shown M-F at 5p during the summer of 88. 66 pulled it then returned it to the air in 1991-92 7 days a week at 4a, sometimes another episode was doubled up at 5a. Later that year, it ran M-F exclusively on The Sci-Fi Channel.
Looks truly amazing you got just the right amount of weathering on there, I almost thought I was looking at one of the original models when you finished the engine bells, in fact it brought back memories of seeing the original models when they were on display in the UK after the show ended, Brian Johnson would be pleased with this rendition.
Hi Aztek1701, thanks for that incredible compliment! 😁😎
I loved the episode when a device suddenly gave the moon an atmosphere !
Hi CF, I remember the Apollo astronauts commenting that when they re-entered the lunar module from their EVAs that their dusty spacesuits began to react with the air in their quarters. It wasn't all that pleasant especially with the sulfur components contained in the grime.
The Last Sunset
So sorry for the loss of Sophie. Great build of the kit.
Hi Mark, thanks for Sophie. Glad you enjoyed the Eagle, it's "breaking records" in comparison to other videos on this channel.
Looks like a genuinely designed space craft
Hi Mark, Brian Johnson really came up with something that has lasted over the years! 😄
I built this about nine years ago, and it was broken. I hand painted it, but now I have an airbrush...will build a new one. Johnson worked on 2001, good music choice.
Hi geographyinaction7814, glad you liked the music at the end and best wishes on your new Eagle 😊
Amazing work, one of my fav spaceships ever. I watched every episode when I was a kid, so many memories.
Hi Carlos, happy to hear another viewer of this video was taken back to their youth and fond memories😊
Great job, love the sound of the rain, very relaxing and of course the bits from Horrors of the red planet! Your sense of humour is appreciated. :)
Hi billdrennan3329, thanks very much! Those clips were about the only redeemable feature from such an awful movie 🤣
Stunning work
Hi Ray, thanks! 😎
Ah the Eagle, finest craft ever built :D From what I recall, Moonbase Alpha had the ability to build new ones, from spare parts I think (I saw it as a kid and read the annuals, so memory may be playing tricks on me).
RIP Sophie. It's never easy losing family.
Hi PTONPC, thanks for your comments on Sophie. I believe that Alpha could build more Eagles, but they sure were destroying them faster than any factory could probably keep up with! 😂
I'm pretty sure one scene in one episode showed a production line where they were building new Eagles. It's been so long since I saw it, though, I could well be imagining it.
@@andysmith1996 I'll have to look for the series .
@@MaxAfterburner Not as many as Voyager with its shuttles and torpedoes 😂
i loved this series as a kid my friend had a die cast model eagle and i lusted after one but never got one , very cool build , i,m sure the mclaren 720s headlights were styled on the front of the eagle as it always reminds me of it lol
Great video. Your attention to detail, skill and experience makes the end result a work of art. An iconic spacecraft indeed!
Hey tonycrook1353, thank you kindly! 😎
What an awesome show. I remember getting a model when I was 10, man was I excited. Now I'm old and getting gray...lol
Hi truckupgf , I recently discovered that the episodes are free for watching with ads on YT with surprising great picture quality 🤩
The show's model builders originally scratch built everything, right up until commercial models of the Eagle began to appear, and then they would go to their nearest hobby shop and buy Eagle kits to assemble to use on the show! An interesting circular process.
Probably saved money too. First they don't have to build every little part. Second, if they didn't like how the model came out, they could easily scratch build parts to fix whatever didn't match the original, which saves more money since they already had a model to modify.
Actually, no. None of the Airfix/MPC kits made at the time were used on the show at all. At least not built into Eagles, as the old kits were not accurate enough to film. But some parts from the kit were used as dressing on other models.
@@jimsmalleimb7709 Indeed. My favourite (over) use of the Airfix Eagle kit was in the Italian would-be Star Wars movie Starcrash. You can find it on CZcams. The opening shot of the obligatory 'big ship' sees the model detailed with every single Airfix Eagle part on the sprues: engine bells, the landing strut parts, even the cockpit is prominently seen. Another kit they really loved apparently was the Revell Saturn V rocket. Look it up, it's fun to see how many bits you recognise!
But indeed, no Eagle Airfix models were abused in the production of Space:1999 🙂
@@berendharmsen I don't know how accurate this kit is, but various 'service module' detail parts are clearly halves of a 1:144 lunar module.
Well SF kits were used as greeblies on many ship models made post-Star Wars until CGI kicked in and kinda ruined the art of scratchbuilding. They did use toy blasters as the basis for actual blasters in the Star Wars prequels. Nowadays it's 3D printing, which opens up a whole new world of possibility.
Tremendous.
Thank you.
Bravo.
Hi billhosko7723, thank you so much! 🛰️👨🚀
Good vibes, good memories, good model and great video - thank you for this!
Hi KetilDuna, you're welcome! So glad you had fun with this video and that it revived good thoughts of days past. 🙂
Absolutely beautiful!!! One of my all time favorite space craft!
A great spaceship. Gratified you liked it, gospyro. 😊
I absolutely loved this program as a kid. I’m a big Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica etc fan and I still think the Eagle is the best looking space craft. Galactica and Pegasus in the last show are a close second.
I had a die cast Eagle in the seventies, along with my six million dollar man 12” figure was my favourite toy as a child.
RIP Sophie, it’s just like losing a family member when a dog passes.
Hi juantanamera7798, the best of days back then 😉. Thanks for Sophie, she is sorely missed.
So sorry for the loss of your beloved Sophie! 😞 Great Eagle model. Very impressive!
Hello David, thank you for your kind comments. 🙂
I was 5 years old when I saw Space, it was my loved series. We all started at school to make "Eagles" from cartons from cigarette packs - all children who had parents who were smokers were appreciated. :)
Hi Virgiliu Stancu, true fans make do with what they can to recreate their favorite ships! Way back when, I built a Battlestar Galactica out of cardboard during the original series run.
great build! I am sorry about your pupper, we lost our fur baby 1/2/23, he was 16 1/2. had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had the 3 foot long toy eagle as a kid, COOLEST toy i ever had!
Hi Craig, sorry for your recent loss. I wish I could have all of mine back more than anything in the world.
I would have loved to have had the large Eagle back in the day as a kid, but I never had the opportunity to own one then.
Excellent Job! I have both 1/48 Eagles. Watching this has given me lots of ideas. Thanks!
So great to hear, thanks Al 😃
A wonderful way to spend half an hour, watching an expert create a Rescue Eagle. I have all 6 Eagle variants mounted on my wall from the 12" Product Enterprise/Sixteen12 range. Beautiful.
That is awesome, thanks for sharing, Rorschach. I'm glad you felt your time was well spent on this model build video.
Que hermosa !!! Como me hizo soñar en mi juventud en ser astronauta. Una belleza !!!
Hola leonardoguanini7476, ¡Gracias! Yo también quería ser astronauta. 🧑🚀
Wow, this brings back memories and oh my brother try to make this ship from pre-dated legos.
Hi Jonathan, it's a classic built in many different forms 🧐
A show ahead of its time. It looks amazing. Great work. Cheers.
Hi YH, thanks. It's a classic that still resonates with many today 🧐
Great job. Lots of tips for me to build my Eagles....
Hi Alex, that's great to hear! I hope it helps and that you can improve on any of the techniques that were tried out for better Eagle results. 😇

Hi Peter, very thrilled you enjoyed it. Not all that many views on average so far, but the higher enthusiasm for the Eagle build has been nice! 😊

Hi Michael, thanks for everything 🙂
So damn nice! Thank you for the inspiration.
Hi edwardvalle4030, thanks much! I hope you get a chance to build a great Eagle. 😀
been watching your vids from your first build many years ago ... you've come a long way.
Hi tanitatt, the channel and some of my skills have certainly evolved. I wish I could "fix" some of the older videos production-wise at least. 😉
In the late 1970s , there were a Ton of abandoned buildings in my city (Newark NJ) and while playing inside one ,i found an EAGLE ONE ... intact and in great great shape. I was a kid at that time so other kids found out i had it and bullied it from me. It was an awesome toy tho, you could detach the front part and the rear engine to make a jet shuttle, leaving the middle as an stand alone housing or base.
Hi johnpetty3574, great find, but an infuriating loss. I wonder if any are still out there... 🤔
The Eagle is the future of spacebourne conveyance.
A very versatile ship indeed, David. 😃

@@MaxAfterburner Yes, I think I will. I have always built highly detailed models of real world subjects, but have been sort of “gravitating” towards Sci-Fi and space exploration models. Those shows and movies of the 60’s-80’s bring back fun memories indeed !
I remembered watching this show originally, to me it was so ahead of it's time!!! I still watch to this day!!! I believe David Prowse the actor who played Darth Vader in Star Wars was originally on this show!!!
Hi George, yes, David Prowse did appear on 1999. Also, many actors that appeared on the Space: 1999 TV show went on to do big and small parts in Star Wars.
Whoa... noice! All the detail that went into it...
