This version is the best it’s raw and haunting unlike the live version done with an orchestra a few years ago ! This original version has the psychedelic vibes of 1967 when it was made and it’s still so strong when you listen to it today it just takes you to another time with the vibe ! I’ve heard other versions but I think you can’t beat the original version just beautiful and haunting the way it was !

I have to agree with you. The live version from Denmark is beautiful and majestic, but it doesn't really compare to this 1967 version. Gary Brooker still had an amazing voice 40 years later so that's not the issue. Rather, the 1967 version is glorious in its essential stripped down form. All that orchestration in the live version was overkill. Shawn and Mel wisely selected the best version of the song.

The story of the song is about a old carpenter married to a young woman, and she has fallen out of love with him “ as it is plain to see “ , she is leaving him “ as he looking through this playing cards “ he had no idea until it was too late . Vessel virgins she is leaving for the coast, “ although my eyes were open , might as well have them closed “ he has no choice but to let her be . As the tale is told “ as the Miller tells his tale “ is the old story line . Most want it to relate to an over dose at a party . I like the Millers tale better !!

The 60's gave birth to the Motown sound, and the sound of Philadelphia. With great groups like "The Stylistics", "The Delfonics", "The moments", "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes with Teddy Pendergrass."

Great choice. One of the quintessential songs of the 1960s.

So good to see a reaction to the original recording of this song from 1967 rather than a live version from nearly 40 years later which everyone else does.

You need to do the live version of 2006 , almost 40 years later, incredible.

This song is so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes. I can still remember it being played at my middle school (8th grade) graduation, and even though I had heard it on the radio many times before then, hearing it on that day had a special impact on me that made me love it even more, because it just sounded perfect for the occasion. I’ve had this song on my mobile device for decades, and I can never get tired of hearing it, thank you Procol Harum for creating such a beautiful work of art, it will live forever, and never be forgotten.

Yes, thanks for taking in the original song and video. Great reaction. I hope you can take the song in again, because as much as any song it took in the zeitgeist of that special moment in time. It can't really be duplicated for that reason.

Late 60s and the 70s there was so much great music coming out from so many artist and bands and this was one of them but if you were not around then you probably have not heard of a lot of them some were searching or perfecting their sound and there was some who like Procol Harum, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, James Gang, Black Sabbath and Grand Funk Railroad who were recording some great and iconic music that was so different from one another it was a great time to be alive wouldn't have missed it for the world

It has been recorded that this song is the most played in public places in the UK over the last 75 years, it's sold in excess of 10 million records. Also it is the most played record on British broadcasting for the last 70 years. It's Gary Brooker, he still performs it, you can get live performances from a few years ago where the bloke sounds just as good as he did then.
