Ron Dante was the singing voice of The Archies. The song sold 10 million copies and was the number one song of 1969.
Worldwide smash !! When music was there to be enjoyed.
Right on!
This song was huge worldwide.
Bubblegum music people!
Good to know.
I remember having a 45 of this off the back of a Sugar Smacks box.
I had it too!
Earlier today I was delivering ventilators to hospitals and the person I was with we were talking about this and he remembered and I remembered that record behind the box of cereal. Always remembered the Archie Funhouse show Saturday mornings
Mmmmmm Sugar Smacks! Where did they go!,??
@@chrisrandall2710 Sugar Smacks you can still find as Kellogg's Honey Smacks or Malt-O-Meal Golden Puffs (in the big bags). I still get my Sugar Smacks fix that way ;) Walmart & other stores!!
@@msfeistybabe thanks! Not sure if we those in Canada, at least Ottawa
We boomers loved this upbeat "bubble gum" genre pop song. An unlikely but very popular #1 hit in 1970 both in the US and internationally. You two had a "love fest" reaction to this one!
This boomer has to disagree. Never liked kiddie music. Even when I was a little knee scraper. But to each his own. I preferred soul and good old roll & rolll.....🙃🤪😝
The very young boomers. 🤪
This young boomer still loves it!😁
@@theresagallagher9161 I do too but this song has always been so uplifting and happy
I confirm and approve !!
The Archies were Ron Dante, Toni Wine and Andy Kim. They had several big hits backing the Saturday morning cartoon show and helped coin the genre phrase "bubblegum"--which I love!!
Ron Dante also produced Barry Manilow's first nine albums
Another good Bubblegum band was 1910 Fruitgum Company.... 1,2,3 red light; Simon Says; Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.. and others..... sounded a lot like The Cowsells.....
When the members went their separate ways, Andy Kim changed his stage name to Baron Longfellow. It didn't go over well and went back to Andy Kim
@@ivarwinter3049 No worse than Andy Kim! LOL
Veronica was so damn hot!
The ULTIMATE bubblegum tune, I remember when they were going to premier this on the Archie Cartoon on a Saturday morning, it seemed like the most important thing in the world!
YES bg for sure i was 9 in 69
Almost every preteen had this song since it was on the back of a cereal box. My sister still has this cardboard 45 record.
This got played every Saturday morning on the Archie's cartoon show. This is what we call back in the day, a bubble gummer song.
You’re not annoying, you two are awesome! The world needs more people like you.
This was recorded for the 'Archie' kids cartoon show in the 60's... it actually became a hit - 'The Archies' was the fictional cartoon band formed by the characters best known today on the 'Riverdale' TV series. Each episode of 'Archie' would have a new song w/ the cartoon band playing 😂
Archie Andrews was the main character... Betty & Veronica were the girls... Jughead was Archie's friend on the drums... Hot Dog was Jughead's dog... Reggie was Archie's 'rival' for Veronica (or Ronnie as she was called) while Betty couldn't stand Reggie😂
I am trying to remember if I have actually seen this vid before. It's almost always the cartoon
Since your doing TV bands check out the partridge family "I think I love you" or "somebody wants to love you" both are good tunes
I loved the partridge family
Partridge family had a lot of good songs and the show was funny too.
Keith!!!!!!!!!!
This hasJust got to be like my favorite song of all time. I was a 7th grader when it came out! Lol. Omg... Memories.
Such a great song! I remember I had the cardboard cutout 45rpm off a box of Honeycomb :-) Ah, the good old days! Thanks Shawn, Mel.
2 ABSOLUTE MUST HEAR CLASSICS,,
SMITH "BABY IT'S YOU"
THE STAMPEDERS "SWEET CITY WOMAN"
The Beatles did a great version of “Baby It’s You.” One of John’s best vocals.
Just great. Pure nostalgia.
OMG!! I had no idea you had reacted to this HUGE bubblegum hit!! That's Ron Dante doing the singing here. The way the song was used in the Archies cartoon was adorable and you can find that on CZcams. Many of us of a certain age remember watching this show back in the late 60's. You should do a deep dive into bubblegum. You would probably love it.
A TRUE FEEL GOOD CLASSIC,,
BOBBY BLOOM "MONTEGO BAY"
Yes.
A big hit in my country 🇬🇧 when I was a kid, circa 1969.
A SMOOTH SOUL GROOVE,,
THE BLACKBYRDS "WALKING IN RHYTHM"
Love this song!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻
Awww, you are too cute, sweet and romantic. You are a great couple.
I really like you guys. What a sweet couple you are. I wish you knew the smile in my heart that you guys bring in these tough times. Sugar sugar was a different world back then. May God bless you
Andy Kim, is one of the members here. He went solo and had a massive hit with "Rock Me Gently". It's worth a listen...
Their one and only was a memorable one to be sure. Best song at our Jr High School dances. Aww sugar aww honey honey.💞💞
Sneaking out of the gymnasium for some sweet kisses . . . ✌💞🤘
Love seeing a couple in love. Hope it never ends.
Aww this is one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s so damn cute & poppy lol
Me too! Love it so much!
I was a big fan of a Saturday morning cartoon called "The Archies" and it was their theme song so to speak.
Love this bubble gum song from when I was a pre teen! I still have the 45!
i really like this song and i watched the cartoon of The Archies every Saturday morning .
These songs are memorable for the reason you guys are showing with the way it just makes you smile.
"Jingle Jangle" is another Archies tune. Bubblegum at its best!
The Top song of the year when it came out. Pop perfection. Songwriters Jeff Barry and Andy Kim are still with us, as is Ron Dante, whose great voice made many a song so much more enjoyable.
The Archies opened the love of music for me. I have all of their albums.
I had a cardboard 45 single of that song that was on the back of a box of cereal when I was 5 years old!! Y’all just brought back some memories!! And The Archies cartoon was one of my favorite cartoons. I also collected the comics.
This song will never get old!!
The singer is Staten Island, NY’s own Ron Dante. He was also the lead singer of ate Cufflinks, who recorded a great hit, Tracy. Give it a listen, I guarantee you’ll both love it.
They should totally check out the Cufflinks....if I do say so myself lol. Being a Tracy and all....
This song is one of my lifetime all time favorites, im 62 and it was a huge deal when this song written for a youth cartoon show became THE #1 hit on the music charts in '69 or '70, it beat out the beatles, Elvis, and every other star of the day - quite a deal in one of the most prolific eras in modern music history. It brings back so many childhood memories, the first Archies album was my very first album at age 7 or so bought by my mother who thought $4.00 was an astronomical amount for a record album.
It was 1969.
Yes sir... "The 60s and 70s... where the heart of the music is at!!!" You said it. 💃 👯♀️ 🕺
First time seeing Shawn without a base cap - nice. Didn't realize he was a real hooman until now . . . lol. He really looks different - gonna take him more seriously now. =8;-) Greetings from Germany + a Great Many Thanks for all the happy vibes coming from you two!
The Archie's from Riverdale High, the CW show is based on the cartoon the Archie's from the late 60s. I was 7 when this song went to#1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the #1 song of 1969, sweet memories
The Archie's, Josie and the Pussycats, The Monkees, The Partridge Family. Music all over 70's TV. ❤️🎶❤️
This Song turns me into a little Kid again! The "Hook" is infectious!
this was my first 45 record!!! Whoa, the way back machine active!!
Saturday mornings with the Archie's!!!
This has been used in commercials a lot.. for candy ! Bands like 1910 Fuitgum Co, and Ohio Express, put out fun, short singles that were perfect for the AM radio.
I Dedicate This Reaction To The Most Beautiful Person I Have Ever Known,,
MALO "SUAVECITO"...R.I.P. Mom..Love & Miss You Terribly. 🙏 ❤
I have this song on my playlist. Really beautiful song.
One hit wonder but a great song of the day I love it
It was not a one-hit wonder. They had other songs that rode the Top 20. Jingle-Jangle was a Top 10 hit and a gold record.
This was the NUMBER ONE song of the entire year 1969; it was a MONSTER. And since it was represented by a cartoon group; no need to worry about royalties or complaints. Don Kirshner couldn't be happier...
I should have known Don Kirshner had his sticky fingers in this, like he did the Monkees...lol
They were a one hit wonder because it was a fictional band recorded by studio musicians. Produced by Jeff Barry, the Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was originally released on the album The album was the product of a group of studio musicians managed by Don Kirshner. Ron Dante's lead vocals were accompanied by those of Toni Wine and songwriter Andy Kim. Together they provided the voices of the Archies using multitracking. Upon the song's initial release Kirshner had promotion men play it for radio station personnel without revealing the group's name, as the Archies' previous single, "Feelin' So Good (S.K.O.O.B.Y-D.O.O)", had only reached No. 53 on the Hot 100 chart.
I wouldn't call them a One Hit Wonder, they had several records that charted.
This was number 1 in the UK charts for what seemed like forever!
Great songs of my youth
This is one of those happy can't get that tune or song out your head song. Now I'm gonna be singing it in the shower, walking, working in the garage fixing stuff... 😖🤣
You two are great crazy!
This was a great song and so was their show.
I loved the old Archie's comic tv show and Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead sang this!!
For Christmas 1960 something as a kid, this & surfing USA were my first 45's.
Hey guys I’m glad you play the song sugar sugar the Archies had a cartoon on Saturday mornings back in the days.
SUGAR SUGAR. What’s up big head when I first heard it in the 70s 👍👍👍👍👍👍💚💜💙💚
LOVE Did you guys react to this great old songs that are amazing and I love that you guys enjoy I like all these great songs. 🎵💙🎵💙🎵💙🎵💙
I really think the best music like this guy just said we’re in the 60s 70s and some 80s
Definitely 👍👍🎵🎵👍👍🎵🎵
Such fun!! Bubblegum music of the past!
Omg one of my favorites 2
This song was written for “The Archies” a cartoon on Saturday morning and became a #1 hit for several weeks it is one of several songs written for the cartoon because the teenagers had a ‘GarageBand’ and performed. They had other songs that made the Top Twenty and Top Forty Charts and even released an album even though they were just session musicians and the band was fictional.
I was 3...maybe 4yrs old when this came out. I still have my 45 record. I have a recommendation: Paul Revere and the Raiders- Indian Reservation
I think both Def Leppard and the Archie's were inspired by the age old metaphor for affection/kisses. My great grandma would always say "come over here and give your granny some suggah"
Mad about this song. And so happy for you two and your love.
Luv it! But now you gotta react to the Cartoon version of the song!
you'll be glad you did. It was even more popular than the live version.
Takin me down memory lane today!
You two are so cute...so pleasant to watch...
I was in the 6th grade when this came out in 69, it was all over our junior high school in Texas, still have great memories of the song.
Barf..... GET A ROOM!!!!
LOL!!!! Too much sweetness is great to see!!!!
Sugar, Sugar.. Honey, Honey. Happy song, what's not to love? ❤
I have 3 comments for you here.
1 - This has always been one of my favourite songs. It is so nice & bright & cheerful & just puts a smile on your face if you start singing it. (I first heard it in my early years - the song came out the year I was born - from The Archies cartoons - but I have never stopped loving the sweet message & the little bit of passion that really gets thrown into it in spots.)
2 - Besides the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" - that I don't know for sure but expect it was from this Sugar, Sugar song there is another as well that I will have to see if you have reacted to yet (not as sweet) - called "No Sugar Tonight" - by The Guess Who. I expect that it was also inspired by this particular song.
3 - You 2 are NOT the "annoying couple" - (unless someone has just gone through a difficult breakup or death - which is a breakup in a way too). You are the lovely, loving couple. It is SUCH a JOY to watch the spark in your eyes that you have for each other. It is even more fun when a song you are reacting to brings it out even more. (I know that I am cheering you on - & thinking you may be showing each other some loving once the video reaction is over. I hope that you have been creating a "special" playlist out of some of those songs. 😏)
Take care you guys & I look forward to seeing some more reactions from the 2 of you. I may even recommend a few, although at the moment they aren't ones that will bring out "that feeling" - just other great ones which I am sure will work too.
Giving you love from Canada. ❤
😱😱😱 This is the first time I've seen the actual singers sing this. Over here in the UK all we ever got was the cartoon version from 1969.. Thanks guys👍👍👍 .. Massive hit over here, 8 weeks at No:1
By listening to this song. Would raise my blood glucose through the roof. 🤣🤣
I DEDICATE THIS MUST HEAR CLASSIC TO SHAWN & MEL,,
JIMMIE RODGERS "KISSES SWEETER THAN WINE"
I'd wait for this song every cartoon saturday morning in the 60's.
Yessssssss.....one of my favorites ❤️...... i love you guys.... it's so nice to see in today's society a happy loving couple ❤️.... And there's absolutely nothing wrong ...with being lovey-dovey with your partner even in public😁
I think it's wonderful that you feel that way about each other. That's how it's supposed to be.
This is the first time I've ever seen the group - the video was a bunch of cartoon characters back in the day. My cousin Edwin loved this and I think of him whenever I hear it (he died age 11).
Look closer. They are all Ron playing all the instruments.
One of the songs I remember most from when we came to this country
I was so young when this came out but I think it was the first song I really loved even though I was only around four. My older brother had the 45 and I would beg him to play it for me. And the cartoon “The Archie Show” was a weekly treat. Thanks for the memory!
I remember cutting the records off the back of Honey Combs, Alph Bits, and Sugar Crisp Cereal boxes. They actually worked on our record player. #Nostalgia
Best song to two step to on roller skates.
Watching any loving couple is never annoying. LoL
If you love this song, check out "Do You Believe in Magic" by Lovin Spoonful. Preferably the 1965 B&W live version with their own solid gold dancers. :)
Don't mind other people, just be sweet to each other , just keep going!
Love this song!! 🎶🎤💜
Thx for reacting
I loved the Archie's and the comic.
Bought this in 1969 solo singer Ron Dante. He often sang for the Archies.
I skated to this song so many times in the seventies! Love it!
Another awesome classic. Awesome reaction guys.
my gosh you laied down that line pour some sugar like you been singing Whitney all your life. WOW!!!!!!! nice!
Oh yes, love this. I was about 15 yrs old then and in High School. But have you ever seen the Archies cartoons? That is where I knew it from originally.
Oh yeah man
From the same year man first walked on the moon. Sugar sugar was from a saturday-morning cartoon show. Number one song for 1969.
Oh my, this was my fave song foe several years. My family got sick of it. Glad y'all like it💖
I've loved this song since I was a kid in the 70s
I’m almost envious (not really) that y’all are discovering and hearing these songs for the first time. I’m so happy for y’all. Great job y’all.
It's okay that you like this song Shawn, Lots of 8-12 year old's liked this song when it came out.
Love the Archie's😊✌️
ron dante is a great guy to meet. so talented.
Another in this genera that I really loved as a kid was Tommy Roe, Sweet pea (In the live tape the little girl is my oldest sister, it was her 9th BD and she had the biggest crush on Tommy so my Dad was able to get her a seat next to him and she lost her little miend. :) Before I was born or Id have Loved reaping the rewords of the brotherly hazing), Some other big hits he had are Everybody and Sheila and Huray for Hazle
Loved this song! And enjoyed the cartoon too. I was just a kid when this was released. 💙
I just love ❤️ seeing people happy and smiling.
This has always been a favorite of mine. It's a good upbeat feel good song. I also found out that the front man of Def Leppard did indeed draw inspiration from this song.
