Gary said in an interview that he thought this hit would last maybe 10 years, and disappear. But he kept having young kids asking for this song. A true testament to his ability. Gary's voice was good in 1968, but like fine wine, it got better with age. I have heard many performances of this masterpiece, and this is by far the best.

Procol Harum was the name of their manager's Burmese cat. Always thought that was cool. Gary Brooker is the vocalist and he actually sounded better 40 years later. Gorgeous arrangement with the Danish national orchestra and choir. Totally epic. Thanks for doing this Recklezz crew.

The story I heard was that their manager at the time, Guy Stevens, had a girl friend whose blue Burmese cat was named Procul Harun. Because he mentioned the name during a phone call, it was misheard and also misspelled to become Procol Harum.

This was my mother and father's personal 'song'. They were born in the mid-forties, saw these guys live, and it became their wedding song. To see him up there now with that impeccable voice and seeing him live with the thrill of that wonderful orchestra behind him is just soul-lifting. Bless the both of you for your appreciation of one of the classics.

One of my all time favorite songs. Great in 1967.....MASTERPIECE 40 years later!!!!! The arranger of this deserves massive KUDOS. There is nothing better than a full orchestra and a chorus to bring out emotions!! I get chills every time I see this. Wish I could have been there. I'm sure those in attendance are still talking about it. Music is so much better when performed with real instruments played by real people. Not the computerized generic sounds we hear all to often anymore. I could easily tell how much you both enjoyed this esp. near the end with the great crescendo of the orchestra and chorus. Gary Brooker did sound even better and he sounded just as good even 10 years after this.

One of the rare times a live performance rivals the classic studio release. Alot of layers of emotion in this performance of a unique song that shouldnt have been a hit back then but was so so good that it was.
It is cool when a singer still has it and in some ways is even better of a singer at such an advanced age. Its rarer than we think. More so happens with male voices as our voices mature later than women. So they stay a bit longer if taken care of.
I tell you who would freak yall out whose voice has simply not aged and thats Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. Look up some of his later live performances with Bad Company.
Bad Company would be a great group to react to.

This beautiful song is about a tragic love story. The lyrics are about a man and woman on a ship, in some kind of stage act, they were dancing.... "We skipped the light fandango🕺💃....turned cartwheels across the floor...I was feelin' kinda of sea sick🤢, but the crowd called out for more"... We ordered another drink "but the waiter brought a tray"....."One of 16 Vestal Virgins" (Vestal Virgins or Vestals were priestesses of Vesta, ie: a virgin goddess👸or a beautiful young woman). "I wandered through my playing cards, and would not let her be". He was in love 💗and persistent and most likely was intimate with one of the 16 beautiful young women on the ship. The young women were most likely in a group traveling together) to the coast.... "16 Vestal Virgins that were leaving for the coast"....." And although my eyes were open they might just as well been closed".....meaning it was plain to see that they could never be together but he was blinded by love, passion, and desire...Later on in life, she finds out that he had died (most likely of a broken heart) and never loved another...."And so it was that later as the miller told his tale, that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale".....She finds out her lover had died of a broken heart💔. So now you know why the music is so sad, and melodic, and melancholy, and just beautiful!!!!!.

    Simply magic.
One of the things I love about watching the younger generation appreciate music they themselves never would have thought they would listen to is that I myself, as I've gotten older, have expanded my own listening horizons.
I grew up listening to rock/alternative only and there was definitely a time I would have ridiculed genres like musicals, rap/hiphop, and EDM. Those are now three of my favorite genres.
Stay open minded and the world of music opens up for you

I see more and more younger folk, exploring, enjoying the music I grew up with. I would like to ask you , why? I am just curious. I grew up in what I believe to be the greatest time in music. Great music came out daily.

Thanks for discovering this classic pop anthem. I was in the military when it received air play in 1967. What an emotional piece, even after all these years!

When this “type” of rock and roll music first came on the scene, the “older generation “ said it was trash and would never last. And now to hear orchestras play the music makes me want to laugh. What a legacy was left!

I remember driving down the highways listening to the radio when this first came out. He was and the band members you saw come in later, were all young men. We all were. And I've followed them since I was very little!!! Like a fine wine that just keeps improving!

My Mum’s favourite song. Beautiful arrangement on this performance. An Australian band from 70’s/80’s worth a listen is The Angels… suggest ‘Take a Long Line’ or ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ or ‘We Gotta Get Out of this Place’. Enjoying your channel guys… 💙 from Australia 🇦🇺

Oh, and the reason old artists sound better decades later is because they have decades more of love, pain, successes and failures under their belts. As a 47 year old musician myself who has played for over 30 years, I can say that from experience.

39 years after he did it the 1st time. Amazing. If you like the Danish National Orchestra try them with The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Epic.

RIP Gary Brooker. Perfect vocals both then 1967 and 40 years later. The orchestra adds tremendously to the whole of the song.

The musician plays the "legendary Hammond Organ", which was and is very popular (although nowadays it is mostly played with the keyboard and sampled pieces). It is characterized by an outstanding sound and richness, and the "special" were speakers in the cabinet, which rotated in a controlled manner, creating this particular tremolo effect.
