I like how this implies they were just sitting there staring at him for 10 minutes while he's completely immersed in his land of chocolate fantasy. lol
After moving on from the chocolate topic within the first minute, the German bosses spent the rest of those 10 minutes talking to Homer about some of their other ideas that they wanted Homer to take on around the plant. They assumed during that time, Homer was just sitting quietly and listening. But at the end of those 10 minutes, they asked Homer what he thought of those ideas, and Homer didn't answer. So they went "Mr. Simpson, Mr. Simpson" which we heard while Homer snapped out of his land of chocolate daydream. And when Homer said "We were talking about chocolate", that's when they realized that Homer was daydreaming that entire time, which got them to realize Homer had no interest whatsoever in wanting to help out improving safety standards around the plant. That was the final straw, on top of all his safety violations, which got them to fire him. At first after seeing those safety issues and then calling Homer up to their office, they were actually willing to give him one more chance and give him new tips on improving those safety standards. But when seeing him daydreaming and showing no interest in that, they chose to let him go. That's how I've seen that anyways
This scene was animated by David Silverman, who was often called in to animate the more difficult scenes from the show, including Homer’s heart attack and the chili hallucination episode. He said he had to draw this Land of Chocolate sequence frame-by-frame to get it perfectly the way he wanted. These early seasons of 3-8 really are the best and have a perfect blend of cool animation, characters, humor, plot, and heart. ❤
Thanks for this trivia. I always assumed that animation had been entirely contracted out to South Korea by this point (which was parodied even in the show itself).
Monday morning I'll start working in a (Belgian) chocolate factory. now this peculiar Simpsons scene will be stuck in my mind for the entire weekend, complete with that awesomely funny music (borrowed from Coppola movie, tucker)
Even just in this short clip, there's so much charm to the animation that is nearly totally absent from the newer seasons. Going digital may save time, but it ripped the soul out of the animation. Also the layered humor at its finest. Sure the "That was 10 minutes ago" is funny, but then you start to think about how ridiculous that really is. So was he fantasizing for a full 10 minutes while they just stared at him?. It's the implications that The Simpsons did so well. There's so many jokes in such a short time period.
There are some shows that do the digital animation very well like Adventure Time (mostly thanks to art style) but like you said, there's an intangible charm that goes with painstakingly drawing each individual frame by hand. I've been going back and watching old Disney movies. Stuff like Bambi is brain-melting.
People think Interstellar (2014) was CGI. People are surprised when I tell them that exterior shots of the Endurance and its landers were largely done using model effects. Those models are filmed _then_ they're composited into CGI scenes _(because there's no realistic way to portray a relativistically-accurate black hole with practical effects)._ Point being that people like to pin every minute problem on CGI and digital animation when there's a lot more going on with old films that give them their charm than just doing things physically. Going digital removed that nice, subtle texture you get in old cartoons but that's hardly the most of the problems with the modern animation of the Simpsons. Look at how Marge swings her head in the newer intros, there's a lot of fluidity in the old ones but the new ones barely even have any squash and stretch going on. Going digital isn't what killed the animation, it's hiring animators that don't particularly care about the show. You could just as easily have on-par animation if it were the same animators as 30 years ago. TL;DR: Going digital didn't kill the animation, hiring animators who are not nearly as meticulous as the crew of the early seasons were is what killed it. Edit: To quote a comment below this one: _"This scene was animated by David Silverman, who was often called in to animate the more difficult scenes from the show, including Homer’s heart attack and the chili hallucination episode."_ It's the animators, not the technology.

Not sure what's funnier here, the dream sequence itself, or the fact that he thinks there could be an actual, non-metaphorical place called the land of chocolate and they are from it. lol
Not only was homer thinking of buying chocolate at half price when the world is made of the stuff, the germans sat there for ten minutes watching homer having this silly daydream. This is comedic brilliance.
Best simpsons scene ever. Of course my four year kid is way too young for the Simpsons, but I showed him that peculiar scene. Well... it was an instant hit. What's more, he instantly identified Homer face (which says a lot about how the Simpsons are recognizable as a pop culture icon). He once saw a Homer plush in a store and he told me "look dad ! It's the land of chocolate !" with a big smile. ... The way Homer skip with the rabbits, the way he dance in the street just kills me, every time (and I've discovered The Simpsons in 1993, 25 years ago). ROTFLMAO. The music is just perfect, it just matches Homer happy mood in the land of chocolate.
The old Simpsons not only had funnier stories than the recent Simpsons has, but even the old drawings themselves were funnier than the recent ones. Recent ones are in HD, but the drawings are so bland and tasteless... as Ramsey Gordon always says.
Yep. Take a look at Homer's face at 0:50. Pure cartoon. They don't do that any more. Apparently Matt Groening hated it, he wanted it to be as realistic as possible (except for the fact that it's animated), but I think that was a huge mistake. Some of my favorite moments from the golden era are when they did exaggerated cartoon poses, especially on Homer.
YES!!! The original golden age Simpsons even looking at the drawings was funny, I always thought that. That was klasky-Csupo (spelling) then the outsourced the animation not sure where, but not as funny.
