    Well, given that Mr. Burns is impossibly old, the fact that he refers to donuts as "ethnic food" may in all reality be factually permissible.
    The donut we all know and love today, began with the first Dutch settlers in New England, circa 1640. The then occasional delicacy consisted of crude dough, nuts, (cashews, walnuts), and sliced fruit placed on top. This was history's FIRST donut, (or at least Caucasoid North America's first).
    -- Mr. Burns was likely one of those early New World pioneers appropriating a cultural delicacy from 17th century Netherlands.

    • @sideshowbob
      @sideshowbob Před 3 lety +17

      I didn't know about the Dutch origin, thanks. I do know that most every Southern / Eastern European culture has some sort of deep fried & sugared dough ball or patty, & in Mr Burns formative years, say, pre WW1, there weren't many of those folks in the USA, he would thus consider Donuts, fried dough balls, to be "Ethnic"

      @masakasama OK I figured "donuts" / "doughnuts" got popularized after WW1. Wikipedia is my friend lol.
      Also, I think you mean "20th Century" (that always confuses me too, the "century" refers to the 100 years prior).
      Also also keep in mind The Simpsons started in 1989/1990/1991 so Mr Burns' childhood being prior to WW1 would not have been unusual at that time. Both my grandparents on my Dad's side were born just before 1900 & they were alive at that time.

    • @TristanHayes
      @TristanHayes Před 3 lety +6

      @@sideshowbob No, he meant the mid-19th century.
      "Dr. Mullins traces the arrival of the modern doughnut to American shores to the early 18th century when the Dutch pastry, olykoek, began to appear in New York and other cities. The first cookbook mentioning doughnuts was an 1803 English volume which included doughnuts in an appendix of American recipes. By the mid-19th century the doughnut looked and tasted like today's doughnut and was viewed as a thoroughly American food."
      ( www.newswise.com/articles/glazed-america-anthropologist-examines-doughnut-as-symbol-of-consumer-culture )
      Furthermore, according to basically every other article cited on the wikipedia article, it was the mid-19th century, with one specifying the specific year of 1847.
      "The Dutch solution to the gooey, uncooked center of the doughnut was to stuff it with fillings that did not require cooking but Hansen Gregory, an American ship captain, had another solution. In 1847 Gregory punched a hole in the center of the dough ball before frying. The hole increased the surface area, exposure to the hot oil, and therefore eliminated the uncooked center."
      ( www.thespruceeats.com/the-history-of-doughnuts-1328766 )
      Automation came after WW1, but that doesn't mean it was popularized after WW1. Plenty of things were popular and "American" before automation though.

    This has to be one of the most solid 104 seconds in the history of comedy. So many jokes packed into such a short time frame, and all of them land perfectly.
    Man, Simpsons in its prime just couldn't be beat. Such a shame what Matt Groening and Fox have let it become.

      I'd like to report that in the 30 or so years I've been eating such a breakfast, I've never had such an issue. :) That being said, with the way the world is currently going (and my life to a much lesser extent), self-combusting food would rank low on my list of concerns... Unless, of course, it were to result in the faster reduction in available food--in which case, yes, we'd definitely have a problem... ^^

      @LukeMM95 Před 7 lety +9

      Jovana Sanchez There's a pretty clear distinction between the dumb Homer we see here and the retarded one in later seasons. The joke in this scene is simply that Homer is a failure at everything and can't perform a simply task like making breakfast. The cereal catching on fire is just a surreal punchline to accentuate this. You laugh because "lol how did he mess up cereal?" not "haha, Homer's so dumb".
