  • The battery in my Ford F-150 Lightning's EV just failed after 11 months and 12,000 miles. This is a major issue and one that you need to be aware of before you consider buying a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck.
In recent months, there have been a number of reports of the Ford F-150 Lightning experiencing major battery failure. I'm finding out that repairs can take months if you can find a dealer that is available. I also share my thoughts on the other electric truck options like the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck that is coming out soon.

UPDATE: My Lightning was at the dealership for the battery replacement repair for 16 days, which was actually quicker then I anticipated. A few days after I dropped it off, Ford also assigned me a "Battery Electric Vehicle Agent" that emailed/called with regular updates. If Ford has a dedicated position for this, I'm assuming battery failures are a major issue they are trying to get in front of to stop the news from spreading.
I have heard lots of stories from other EV owners that repairs are taking much longer then I experienced. I was not given an exact cost but the dealer told me if it was out of warranty the cost would have been $10,000 or MORE due to the cost of the replacement battery and significant labor required to switch the battery module out. So far no issues since I have had the truck back. I'm now on the fence if I want to keep the Lightning or not after this experience and questioning the reliability of the truck.

Just wait for the resale value hit once they're out of warranty....will be massive. And driving an EV truck as if it's a car isn't really a fair comparison to an actual truck that can tow and haul...which is what many owners use them for. Lightnings towing are pitiful with range of around 100 miles from what I've seen...not acceptable for people who need a TRUCK.

Thanks for the update on this, I was wondering about the outcome. Did they replace the entire battery, or just parts of it? If they replaced the entire battery, does the battery warranty start new and you have another 100k mile warranty from your current mileage? Guess Im thinking about the cost of fuel, ICE vs EV. That approximate math over 200k miles for ICE can be upward of $30,000 vs $12,000 for battery. Even if the new battery did cost you 15k, it still seems a little cheaper, all other things equal. It's a tough call, I would like to purchase an F150 Lightning but stuff like this has me waiting it out. Sticking with my 2010 F150 :-). Its paid for.

This situation seems to be widespread so far in Quebec, Canada and the way in which Ford manages this is unacceptable. A new product under quality guarantee should not be held at a dealership for more than a week. In the best scenario Ford could simply replace the battery with a new one and send the defective one to the workshop for reconditioning for future rapid replacement of the defective battery.

Same exact issue here. Happened late September at about 8800 miles. I’ll have to look at which module it was but it did take just under a month for the dealer to get it fixed and that was largely due to supply. I’ve put 1400 miles on since the fix and so far no issues. Ford was great at contacting and updating me. I gambled going with the Lightning but it is designed so well that it was the right fit for me. I traded in my’17 f150 eco-boost due to several factors including their 10 speed transmission experiment that only lasted 90k miles, plastic drain pans that lose their seal (trans wasn’t leaking) and ford’s consistent recall across their entire product lineup. One more issue and Ford is dead to me😂

Sadly when a major system fails it definitely makes one lose confidence in the vehicle. It would be useful to know what percentage of the Lightnings are having such failures. If the number is above 2% of all sold that could signal lots of defective batteries sold to Ford for installation in their vehicles.
Unfortunately, in the rush to produce these EV's many manufacturers failed to have the supporting parts and supplies in stock for quick repairs leading to horror stories like this one where customers have to wait months for a repairs. The supply chain has not caught up with vehicle sales as all EV owners find out when they need something repaired.

Rule #1: NEVER EVER BUY A Ford-rule #2. See rule #1. Rule #3 and #4 - Never buy anything made by a GM or Chrysler. In 1985, I purchased a new Ford automobile; within the first five thousand miles, the brakes failed, and I almost died in an accident because they were not correctly installed on the car. The Ford Zone Representative told me to sue Ford; I would get nothing. Several lawyers told me you would never beat Ford in court, don't waste my time and money, and never buy another Ford. I have a 24-year-old SUV made by a German manufacturer. This SUV now has more than 370.000 miles with the original engine and transmission that keeps going and going and going with little to no maintenance or problems. I also have a Japanese car that will soon be 14 years old. This vehicle also keeps going with little to no maintenance. I have a mechanic friend who told me that both vehicles should last at least 20-30 more years. I will never consider owning a Ford, GM, or Chrysler product. A vehicle should last +20 - 30 years with a minimum of 300,000 miles.

EVs are more reliable, but Ford has only 3 years of experience making EVs. Tesla has been making EVs for over 15 years. People joke about Teslas' lack of car body manufacturer experience (panel gaps and paint), but Ford's experience in manufacturing batteries, motors, and inverters is about 80 thousand units; Teslas' experience is about 4 million units. In summary, Tesla is a world-class EV, while Ford has no experience with EVs. Why anyone would buy an EV from anyone but Tesla is beyond me.

Yeah, GM replaced the battery on my Chevy Bolt at 36,000 miles, and a new battery warranty started all over again. As early adapters we are all EV pioneers. I’ve got 67,000 miles on mine and all systems are still go. How will it be at 136,000 miles when the warranty expires? Will it make it to 200,000 miles? My break even point is 12 years. At that point I will have saved $30,000 in fuel costs, making it a free vehicle. Will it make it? There are a couple of Tesla’s being used as interstate couriers that have over 1,000,000 miles. I don’t expect that with my Bolt, but how far will it go? The experiment continues. 😊

I bought 2023 at the end of July I have 2281 miles on the truck and 10/10 I got the same message. I called Ford they towed it into the local Dealer. It is still there. Mine was the 4th module that showed a lower voltage then the rest. They were able to get the new module, but they could not get their battery balancer to work so they had to order another one. Then at the beginning of November they found they were missing the cable to connect to a Lightning to balance the new module to the rest of the battery. I just found out yesterday that each time the find some they are missing the order it ground which to me is completely unacceptable after all this time. They should be shipping overnight. The cable is supposed to arrive next Tuesday it will probably take another week unless they find some other equipment they are missing. I cannot believe they don't do their do-diligence to make sure they have everything they need. They told me this will be the first time they have done this which does not make me feel very good based on their past performance. I here that after the repair the software update will make it so it will be less sensitive to voltage differences, but I have no proof just saw it in a forum. Supposedly it will also reduce the speed of the fast charge, but again no proof. I barely got to drive this truck and already in the shop with a major problem. Since the Dealer has not done this before I hope after this is not turn into one thing after another or shabby work that causes other issues. But even after all this I like this truck. The short time I have had it I love that charging at home it costs me a fraction of what a gas or diesel truck would cost for fuel. That is the one thing why I never bought a truck because it costs you a fortune in fuel costs for day to day and little errands here and there. At first I had the range anxiety, but then I started treating it like my smartphone and just got in the habit of plugging it in every time I get down to about 50% and only charge to 80% and that has been great to always wake up to pretty fully charged truck and never have take time to go to the gas station. I am still positive on this truck I would not give up on it for anything. I love this truck. Even if Ford reduces production it will only make my truck go up in value. Proof of that is when GM first tried electric cars in the 90's and they had the small EV truck years later it cost more then the original. For all the nay-sayers on EV's all I got to say is if we had people like you back when the first automobiles came out with absolutely no infrastructure we would all be still be riding horses. Just like Microwaves and Computers it takes pioneers to get it all worked out for rest.

I have owned 5 new vehicles and over a dozen Lightly used (1 to 2 years old) and I've never had a lemon or troubled one that had problems. So saying that EVs are "more reliable" than ICEs is a questionable statement. ICEs do millions of miles very reliably over the past decades, EVs are going to have to up their game to reach or surpass the convenience and reliability of the if ICE.
I too have a Cybertruck on order but doubt I'll get it as my F150 is truly at the end of life (it's 15 years old with over 200K miles and has only needed things like tires, battery, water pump and alternator... That's pretty reliable!
The problem is, EVs cost more and that offsets the fuel cost savings vs an ICE vehicle.
And THAT is why EVs aren't selling, initial cost and limited battery life with HUGE replacement cost downstream. Much, much more than the cost of dropping a rebuilt IC engine in. A two or three year old ICE vehicle isn't totaled due to its engine going out, a similar aged EV that has a battery failure IS totaled frequently nowadays.

Its not really a shortage, its the company deciding what to do with the supplies.

There are more EV models that have had widespread battery problems than not. (I've owned a couple, currently own an M3).

Ford are in deep trouble with their EV's, especially the Lightning (and Mach-E). These trucks are just not good enough, and reliability now comes into question. Pitty all the owners who've bought into this 1st gen tech and promises.

So, I just received the same error this month on my 2022 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat. My local dealer in Maryland kept my vehicle for 11 days to order parts and replace the faulty battery pack. I am a little concerned since my vehicle was also part of the January battery recall that was only supposed to affect trucks that came from one of Ford's plants. I went to different Ford dealer for that recall and it took almost two months since their equipment broke at that location. Hence, the reason I decided not to go back to that location for this issue. I'm curious to know if EV owner's of different manufacturers like GM have experienced the same issues with the Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, or even Silverado EV since they use the Ultium battery. The 2023 Lexus RZ uses a different battery pack as well. I think there is going to be a long period of learning how to maintain these vehicles at dealerships. I hear Tesla has this perfected since they've had about a decade of practice. However, I will say Tesla owners I know have taken their vehicles in for repairs far more than I have over the same amount of time of ownership. I'm looking forward to see the Lightning's refresh. Will they switch over to the 800v battery architecture? Will they be able to promise over 500 miles of range like Chevy Silverado EV and RAM 1500 REV?

Thanks for sharing, it was definitely been a learning curve with the Lightning and I’m still not sold on it. It’s great for around town but I would never take it on a road trip.

the only reason you save on charging a EV right now is because the public is subsidizing you, if they weren't it would cost the equivalent to $17.00 a gallon for gas, get real to charge a EV is the same as 50 refrigerators there is nothing cheap about that.

your not saving money when you pay more up front, poor reliability, long charge times, for only one vehicle, not a good option.

I wonder if the Mach-e has faced similar battery issues or if it has improved with later versions of the F150.

If your truck is under 24 months old from in-service date, and it stays in the shop more than 15 days, you can start the buyback process, and if they don't fix it within 10 days, they have to buy it back and give you a full refund

It's in the owner's manual or the lemon law booklet, you have to inform them using a form with certified mail, the manufacturer is never helpful in this case, I'm in florida and I found the form and the link on the state attorney's website and it was also inside the owner's manual, I called the state attorney and they told me what to do. My truck (2022 ram) was waiting on a part that's back order until the end of Dec magically it got fixes before the 10 days notice is over. I think it's the same process for every state

Not in Oregon, they get three tries to repair and they have 30 days per try. There is no Federal Lemon law they differ by State.

What are your costs to charge?
At home your upgraded electrical system?
Cost of battery repairs or replacement? Not to mention the harm to the environment to make batteries
Do the math gas is lower costs per km and smaller carbon footprint.

When the Big 3 went from V8 to 4 cylinders in a hurry in the 70's it was a disaster and you'll see that same debacle now with them rushing these EV's to market. Doesn't exactly make you feel all warm and fuzzy when the UAW workers are getting huge raises and your stuck with their lemon 🍋 of a vehicle 😂

My good Man, the battery of an EV are like the motor. If the motor goes bad a mechanic need to look at it and it may be a quick fix’s or a two days in the sharp until the part arrives. But after so many customers complain about the same thing when it come to the Battery. Prepare yourself for the worse because the dealership will never tell you the truth. Educated yourself in the problem with EV battery issue. The line is maybe two month long. I hope you gets your truck fix quickly. Good luck!

Even if I need to keep changing my oil on my ICE car, I'll be happy to do that rather than having a repair (regardless of cost) where I can't use my car for several months waiting for a part.
