The fact that it's going to be launched worldwide is a huge selling point in places where the steam deck is actually pretty expensive due to import and shipping.
lol...its gonna be like 1000$ dollars xdd
@@betonman9 no problem
@@RolioJack yes problem
Less then a month out and no real benchmarks etc is strange
@@PiNPOiNT2K the steam deck had no benchmarks before it came out
I love that handhelds are coming back into the market. Switch, Steam Deck, Analogue Pocket, Playdate, Asus Ally, Logitech Cloud, etc.
Who will last longest?
Yeah I agree with that. Kind of which the playstation had made a better version of the Vita but I guess it's a little too late for that now.
you cannot put the playdate on the same sentence as those other handhelds bro 💀
Just got a miyoo mini plus
Playdate is garbage dude.
Perfectly happy with the Steam Deck, but glad to see competition and progress in the market.
This isn't competition. Unless Asus prices this at under 700 dollars, which I doubt.
@Super Guy I think if they were smart, they'd price the base level with the lower end chip and smaller storage between 649-700. Several people have postulated that is possible. So in that case yes, but I don't the Z1 extreme is in the same market, certainly, to your point.
I'm a 64gb Deck owner, so not part of that segment. No matter the other models prices though, it introduces new platforms into the handheld PC market against the smaller boutique brands like Ayaneo.
@@salitz91$699 just announced
@@MrREAPERsz Same price for a steam deck that is not available in other countries which needs shipment and tax for 64gb base steam deck at the same time it is more powerful and can play not just steam games but epic games, garena, xbox game pass, and other more non steam games because it is windows 11 heck it can even be your personal computer some games in steam that only works on windows and since steam OS is gonna be available in windows as well you can install steam OS as well if that is what you prefer has Dual fan for better cooling has a port to connect it to ASUS EGPU if you want more juice more storage with expandable storage and a 1080p screen.
I wish the Deck was stronger. If the performance of this is on point I’m selling Deck immediately. I’d gladly drop 1k on it if I like the results. Just gotta wait to see some in game benchmarks
The only thing holding me back from wanting to get this is the lack of TouchPads, they have bailed me out so many times on the steam deck and are such an incredibly useful feature, sometimes the joystick just isn't enough. I also threw in a 1tb sd card and dualboot windows and did a little tweaking to get the maximum performance out of it. I can run all my games at 60 fps.
Yoo bro can u point the right direction to dual boot a video? I got a se card just want to make sure I do it right
You can run elden ring / rdr2 at 60?? 😳
@Agent 47 he said "his" games. Doubt hes playing those.
@Agent 47 I don't own elden ring and I don't play my steam library on windows, just my gamepass games. As for Red Dead, I play it on steam os and the highest ive played it was at 40 fps after following some tutorials, I mostly play on the 30 fps Xbox one x settings. I think with cryo utilities you can get it into the 50s though but im not sure how stable it would be.
@@alexgibson7960 ah ok2 thx for the info 😊🙏🏻
One correction, I would argue that calling the steam OS proprietary is very misleading.
It's literally an open source Linux distribution.
Oh, I missed that. Yeah, that's mostly false. They didn't distribute it outside of the Steam Deck but it's not proprietary at all
Wellllll... it's customized for steam but yeah its not really proprietary. Not a crazy thing to get wrong tho.
@@Livewire1 It kind of is. It shows a collossal lack of information on what Linux even is, somewhat embarrassing for a tech site
@@Thornskade yeah I get what you mean. CNET is a joke ngl
@@Thornskade they plan to distribute
I think when they were saying it will most likely be less expensive than some of the rumors they were talking about the rumors that it will be over 1k$, I think saying it will be less than 6-700$ is a pretty big leap
Newest leak suggest the more expensive variant is at 700$, we don't know the price of the cheaper one.
@@Fadexpl and that’s exactly in line with most of the rumors, there were also rumors that it was going to cost 1k$ or more so my statement still applies
@@BigDeal0716 im not saying you were wrong, Im just adding context

The steam decks screen is not “small” by any means lol I love it because it’s big and is actually not bad. Especially when using vibrant deck to up the saturation and other options.
Is the handhelds revolution from the 90s making a comeback? Sony's rumoured to have one in the works as well 😊
Sony is making one but its an only cloud machine
hope Sega is working on a new Game Gear..
It's the APUs making the difference they are on par with entry level GPUs hence it's taking over that market, over time we might see Xbox and PS consoles going handheld only as well
@@empirezz2728 makes sense as adding another console device would be somewhat a risky move, developers already have their hands full producing for almost 6 to 5 devices a time.
Newer Handhelds have been around for quite a way like gpd and their win series. Aya with their handheld and so on. I think the reason why people don't know about them is that they seem to be targeting the niche of emulation or "retro handhelds" though more and more handhelds have actually been arm based handhelds running android like the retroid pocket 3
Great so see more competition, but the missing touch pads are quite a bummer!
Honestly it is
If this is in that 600-800 price range, I will be selling my Deck and moving over to the Asus ROG Ally. Coming from someone with a Series X, PS5, a decent gaming rig, these handhelds have completely changed how I approach games.
Regardless, as a Steam Deck owner it makes me so excited to see more competition. It drives innovation, more competitive prices which are a good thing for the consumer.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Steam Deck is a power house. But there are some newer games that it very much struggles to run. I have tapered expectations and happy with it. But seeing something that claims to be '2x the performance' and at a reasonable price. I'm all ears.
wonder asus durable vs steam deck
Now everyone hates the deck.
@@panamike6178 I think the Steam Deck is a fantastic little machine. I have one, got one for my wife a few months back.
But at the end of the day if there are alternatives in a similar price range with more performance.. I'm jumping ship lol
@@RealSykes Makes sense man, I think I'm in denial. I'm stuck with my Deck, haha!
Out of curiosity, how has the Deck changed how you approach games?
I have a PS5 and Switch but prefer gaming on my huge OLED, on the sofa. I can’t see how a handheld could change that.
I want a big screen, not something small.
As a steam deck owner, I am glad to see fair competition, rn in terms of pricing, the 64gb still unbeatable, but if the rog actually make the price 899 or 799 and have at most full power performance at 30watt with 2hours of lifespan, yeah I would say is a great option.
i'm watching on a steam deck right now. the screen is not the best but having the vibrant deck plugin makes a world of difference. the rog ally doesn't look ergonomic andcomfortable to hold. and i'm wondering what the battery life will be will windows 11 running and having such a powerfull apu to cool. that being said; i bought a 2m extention cable for my charger and am mostly plugged in.
@@pablieto-veganson it's just newer APU, it's going to be more efficient than steam decks and you can choose tdp to play. So battery life should be less of a problem than in steam deck.
already at best buy show z1 extreme 699usd
It's beatable for me. 64gb means I would have to buy an aftermarket SSD anyway.
@@pablieto-vegansonVasy majority of people play indoors anyway or near a power source so battery life isn't really THAT big of an issue for most people.
Deal breaker for me off they use glue to seal the device and don't provide spare parts, easy to find and at a reasonable price. I expect to be able to maintain this for years, it would maintain value of the device.
Considering low battery life would it be ok to leave it charging while downloading games and updates as well as leaving it docked for long periods of time while gaming
Which model are you reviewing z1 or z1 extreme?
I never thought I would see a day where Windows is called more free and Linux is proprietary by someone. Come on CNET...
Hi. That was also my first thought. It is really unbeliveable to hear something like this. Very disappointed!!
I currently have 64gb steam deck and planning to get a series X and Ps5 later this year. But this Asus I'm feeling it
can you use it as a traditional pc? Like browsing and installing other apps?
If Sony doesn't decide to make PS vita again, it'll probably be the best portable gaming device. But I'm always expecting Sony to make a PS vita sequel again.
there is already gpd win 4 no need for sony pc
What are your thoughts on the playstation portal?
Excited for its release!
You missed the part where the rog ally will support uhs2 micro sd cards so it will actually support higher reads so shorter loading times than steam deck and switch
It all comes down to price. Right now the Steam Deck is fairly price for what you are asking the system to do and it does a lot. The only downside to Steam Deck is running games that require Origin or Uplay.
$400 vs what I assume would be $700 the cheaper AMD version? I think the Steam Deck has nothing to worry about.
@@Jucelegario You would need to compare the price of the 512 GB version for a fair comparison. And keep in mind that for that price you get a better screen (1080p/120 Hz) as well as a more powerful processor.
eww , who uses origin or uplay
@@karkinissan dont change the guy is right, people already complaint than rtx 4070 at 700$ is too expansive, you think 700$ is acceptable price for your average steam player ?
@vkobe vkob It is, the 512gb steam deck is the highest selling one according to valve and that's $649.
Im going to pick up an ally because valve is insisting that they wont release a deck 2 for many years.
While losing the trackpads suck, everything else seems pretty great. I wont be able to play games like oldschool runescape or guild wars 2 as comfortably, but for controller based games this seems to be a massive upgrade.
I'm getting an Ally and keeping my Deck. Deck seems better for low-end games that rely on the D-pad, since it has the most comfortable D-pad I've ever used(narrowly beating out the Vita's), and the ROG Ally's seems more like the modern Xbox D-pad. I think out of the new controllers, the Xbox has the best D-pad, but it can't compete with the Deck's. We'll see.
Anyways, current plan is to load my Deck up with emulated games that it dominates, like PS1 via Duckstation, and leave PS3/PS2/Switch emulation to the Ally. Low-end games on Deck, high-end ones on Ally. Yee yee!
Does this have usb c display port? Or we have to use epu for connecting to monitor, kayboard and mouse?
Something not touched on... In addition to the Asus ROG Ally not having touch pads it also has only 1 set of paddles in the back where the Steam Deck has 2. I'm also curious as to how the sound is because the Steam Deck speakers are the best I have experienced on a handheld.
Also, keep in mind with a higher resolution screen at 120hz, Windows 11 and the fancy RGB lights the battery power will be drained even faster than the Steam Deck. Both devices have a 40 watt battery.
IMO all the Steam Deck needs is an external GPU. Connect an external 4080 or 90 and It is now a gaming desktop where you can run all Triple A games at max settings for the most part. 👍
Notice how price wasnt mentioned? Originally i was planing on getting a new gaming laptop (mine went out few months ago) but when i saw the prices for Steam Deck i went for that. So far no handheld (besided Nintendo switch lite) can beat steam deck in price. This looks intresting but im Super satisfied with my Steam Deck
They mentioned it, you didn’t watch the full video, they said the price will be lower than the 700 dollar rumors.
I did watch it he said its "probably " going to be that price, not offical
@@oo--7714 that's "lower end" model which runs a different SoC
@@Jaxv3rstill faster than Steam Deck
@@TRX25EX it might be faster but its quite a bit more expensive

Weird that in mobile PC handheld devices still got microsd slot for games..which is in smartphones kinda being ditched more because they'd said it was due to its slow speed.. although PC got the mighty NVME storage but still opting the microsd..
So will I need a external GPU to play desktop or will it have a good enough gpu built in?
Was this a comparison video or hands on?
As Asus ROG entering in this market, will see soon other big brands like Razer or Alienware investing the place….
More competition, prices will drop quality might raise.
Steam Deck 2 might be on the way.
If Aya neo keeps their dynamic, they will get bigger.
It has never so simple to play on pc, it’s good.
As an old console lovers for the simplicity, I’m gonna get a Asus Ally, the Z1 extreme. For sure
Btw Alienware have already teased their own handheld a couple years back. They seemed like they were about to announce all the details after CES but judging from the silence, they’re probably still developing the right specs and build just like ASUS has been doing.
Price is really gonna be the make or break for this; but I'm very interested. If it's price competitive, I'm definitely more interested in this than the Steam Deck personally
$699. Make your decision but to me it sounds pretty disruptive
@@wakannnai1 For which model? If that's the most expensive model with the 512GB, that's not bad at all.
@Kenjionigod that's for the 512gb model, but do we know there is a cheaper one???
@@cyberlocc I don't know how many different versions but I understand there's supposed to be a one with smaller hard drive and less memory but not sure where that would land price wise
How’s the battery life between both?
looks interesting, but only 7ms display response time. looking forward to the price.
So many improvements over the steam deck. The display will hopefully have better color gamut coverage than the steam deck's pathetic 63.7% srgb. 120Hz will be great for less demanding games and VRR will smooth out fps dips. Wifi 6e + the uhs-ii microsd slot + the 8 core cpu will have you installing games so much faster than the deck. I'm excited to see the battery life the new 4nm apu gives you when capping frame rate and lowering render resolution.
Let's hope so, until now all the other competitors, even if they mounted more powerful APUs, under 15 watts did not in the least affect the excellent performance per watt of Steam Deck and its Aerith / Van Gogh SOC. Let's hope that this Armory Crate keeps consumption at bay excessive amounts of Windows 11, at least until an official version optimized for portability arrives from Microsoft.
For me, the target must remain a maximum of 15 watts for these devices (a balance between performance, battery life and temperatures is essential for these x86 handhelds), any higher wattages are better left (if one wants) to dock mode.
I wouldn't call something with these kind of ergonomics heavier and clunkier if it's only 60 grams difference.
But the Ally is SO MUCH LIGHTER weighing in at 600 something grams compared to the massive 669grams of the Steam deck! \s
The Steam Deck is important because it pushes Linux gaming forward. I'll keep giving my money to Valve because of that.
I don't know if Asus ever mention this but wonder if it can be played anywhere without being connected to the PC like the Steam Deck?
Getting one for sure, I love handhelds!
Steam deck is better software wise, and trackpads are a must and thus doesn't have one and the battery life is the same as the steam decks but it uses more power than the steam deck, so you only getting 30mins to 2hours hours max on AAA games lmao
DabbinzJ, the rog ally is more efficient than the steam deck, it has 50% more performance at the same wattage.
@@oo--7714 🤦♂️ that's just measuring the TDP of the APU. It doesn't take into account the power draw from the screen. The 120hz screen will drain the battery. People complaining about 2 hours on the steam deck will be getting 1-1.5 on the Ally.
@@craigjoe8691 at 15 watts it's 50% more powerful, like legit if you leave it at 60hz it will still have a better battery life than the deck. You can still cap the fps if you want a better battery life like what you can with the steam deck.
@@oo--7714 now that's just contradictory, why would you spend so much more money, just to kneecap it's performance. Which is it? Are you lauding the performance, or the specs?
It should have detachable controllers in case the buttons are pad wear out it would be easy to swap them out
screen is small on the steam deck? what its the same size as the ally
Can't wait to edit video's on this thing.
Was considering investing in a steam deck, but definitely going to wait for the ROG ALLY! Stoked for running AAA games at decent performance WHERE EVER I want to 🎉
Good luck.,.. as i dont see them having anywhere NEAR the production of the steam deck and same situation will happen most likely they will be scalped to high heavens.
@@severdnerv asus is a hardware company, they will be able to produce handhelds quickly. Steam had issues since it is a software company and the whole global supply chain issues due to the coronavirus.
The Steam Deck does get decent performance, but anyhow don't underestimate the difference the Steam inputs make. Trackpads especially, I find it hard to justify getting expensive hardware only for it to be missing these

second this. Asus is the ONLY brand I've used for 30+ years now.. will not use anything else.
I have a steam deck however if this is priced right I’m getting one asap
I want to see a CNET review of the GPD Win Max 2!
There are handful of others with really good reviews on it I own one and it's slick
Watching this on my steam deck and i still prefer my deck. Yet.
Does It have gyro? I couldn't find any information about it
Will it run steam? And how well will it compare since steam os is a striped down os that does not require as much oomph
Looks fantastic but I'm not sure if SteamOS is propietary software since it's basically Arch with a custom layer. Also stating that windows pretty much let's you do whatever you want is kind of bold.
Yeah, trying to imply Windows is more open than Linux of all things is... interesting
SteamOS uses the Steam DRM wrapper that interacts heavily with the modified Arch distro Valve uses. So yes, SteamOS is very proprietary and actually quite locked down because of the DRM. Almost all games on Steam either have 3rd party DRM like Denuvo, or Valve's DRM (Steam DRM wrapper). To make Steam games work on SteamOS, Valve has bolted heavy DRM support into their Arch build.
Yeh the guy is a total clown. Probably sold to whatever corporation give him money. A real shame.
Tell me please. Example: in witcher3 the same graphic settings on SD (800p)and asus (1080p) what platform will have more fps?
Whats the max tb for micro sd card that can be added???
Is there any latency with keyboard and mouse? Can you change the sensitivity? On Xbox there a little latency and you can’t control the sensitivity Lile you would on pc:(
It may be lighter and more powerful, but I prefer the ergonomics of the Steam Deck...and then there's the price. I'm wondering why they don't want to tell you the price, or accept preorders? I mean it launches in 3 weeks. What gives?
I hope it come around $400 to $500 the most and I get one just to have a Xbox portable with gamepass. Nice
lol
I'm definitely getting one
Deciding on what to get this or a steamdeck.. not having trackpad is the only thing holding me back.
True but on the other hand the specs ensure this device is sorta future proofed for upcoming games
@Cow liver Yeah went for a Aokzoe a1 pro in end. Better specs than this and gyro and hall joysticks. On indigogo at the moment.. Will see European prices on this and true specs to see whether to cancel. Comes with a case too.
coming to the market in like 3 days!!!
The price point will be the make or break for this one. Of course this is Asus ROG brandname so I can’t imagine it being less than $800 for the base model. Which puts it in direct competition with all the current handheld PC makers.
Let’s wait and see.
At 800 dollars for a hand held gaming system. Fkkkk that
I suspect the 6 core 4 CU one will be the one that sells for £750ish and might even have a smaller SSD.
The 8 core 12 CU, 512GB one is likely to be £850 to 900ish.
The 6 core is likely to perform like the deck and probably be better at emulation while being a very similar GPU given that they have cut the CU count in half. Clearly as a cost cutting/power budget mechanism.
@@tritonh5683 its a handheld pc. strictly speaking, that's not unreasonable. imagine saying wow spending more than 500 dollars for a laptop. *pft*
I'll stick with my overall better steam deck. This device doesn't even have trackpads which cuts the amount of games you can play that only use mnk like age of empires to literally 0. And the battery life would be worse than the steam decks.... good luck
@Dabbinz J
the ally is more efficient than the steam deck, it is using more updated graphics and processor, rdna 3 and zen4.
Does anyone know what that retro shooter is near the end of the video?
Since this thing is a WIN11 device, its going to be a winner in my book.

The device looks awesome, but all these publications only mention the advantages of having Windows on a handheld, but they don't mention any of the disadvantages compared to SteamOS. I hope it will have good SteamOs support in the future.
whats the disadvantage?
@@sephirothgg1234 There are quiet a lot of disadvantages, while game compatibility is important, it isn't the end all be all when it comes to handhelds, as there already are a lot if games that work fantastically well, in some cases even better than on Windows even of they were not designed for Linux, on the Steam Deck and SteamOS, when it comes to a handheld, what matters is the overall handheld experience.
For example, when it comes to battery and performance, Windows has a lot of background process that run that SteamOS doesn't, which drain battery, also when it comes to putting the device to sleep while running a game, the chance of things going wrong when the device is woken up, are much higher on Windows. Secondly, the SteamOS Gaming Mode is hardcoded into the OS as a sort of desktop environment, with a lot of optimizations for power consumptions and for background tasks while running a game, and you are also able to access OS settings with a controller-minded interface, whereas the interface that you will launch games from on the ROG Ally, is just a sort of overlay app that goes on top of Windows.
There are many more disadvantages to Windows on handhelds, it just isn't an OS made for that, that being said, there are rumours that Asus ROG is working on their own handheld Linux distro, and I am sure that in the future they will provide support for SteamOS when Valve decides to release it for everybody.
Edit: The ROG Ally still seems like a fantastic device, and definitely, without a doubt, is worth a buy if some if the rumours about the $650 price are correct for the 512gb version. But also, you have to keep in mind the disadvantages that Windows has on a handheld.

Can it out video without using ASUS external GPU?
Can it run RPCS3 better than SteamDeck because I feel that would be the best indicator of which one is better for hardcore gamers
Same, Yuzu and RPCS3 will be most important for me.
@@woutervandriel1861 yeah I’d love to play fh1 on the run and the last of us ps3.
if this is in the price range if 500-600 ill definitely get one. Especially if it is better than the steam deck. the steam deck is great an all but i feel like the graphics isnt good enough. still a great hand held
Yep steam decks screen isn’t that great. Bet once this drops steam deck comes with a higher resolution and frame rate version
@@HellsinkyNuminatiCeo i don't know why everyone wants 1080p and 120hz LOL 900p max and 60hz looking very smooth on a smaller screen
