COOT Decoys Got The Ducks In CLOSE! (Limited Out) | Duck Hunting 2023

Matt and Bryce are back out for another duck hunt. Matt, per usual, has his 28 gauge and broke out the coot decoys for the first time this duck season. There weren't a ton of ducks around but the pair stuck it out and ended up decoying nice groups of teal in close. It was another great day of duck hunting.

Definitely getting some coot decoys. Where I hunt public land, coots are everywhere. Been watching a ton of duck hunting vids on CZcams, and this is some of the best decoying I've seen.

The reason I believe the coot decoys are so effective is because the way they stick out/high visibility they give your spread. There was an article many years ago in a hunting magazine where a gentleman bought some high end duck decoys and then took some old duck decoys and painted them flat black. He hunted over both and consistently shot more ducks over the black decoys. Just because the ducks could see them easier. The difference is really noticeable as the sun gets higher in the sky.

They're definitely highly visible. Ducks also associate coots with safety and in the case of teal, food.

We had a steady flight of coots here in South Central Michigan for years, So back in the day we painted old mallards flat black & mixed them in with the regular spread, it seemed to help a lil' so the next year I bought some coots to put out , but after that season they seemed to of moved off to other lakes in the area .. So we never could tell if they helped or hindered the hunt !!

Probably both. Coots are prevalent in the area and teal will land with them.
