So glad your reacted to this! He said in an interview that he would rather entertain the people at home than the celebrities in the audience. I love that he was brutally honest - I loved this monologue.
One thing that people seem to miss is that the celebs are actually enjoying it.

It actually put me off of Tom Hanks. The fact he was SO offended makes me think at worst there's maybe some questions that need answered. Or at best he's an arsehole.

Ricky Gervais is dangerous because he doesn’t crave fame and he doesn’t need more money, so he doesn’t care if he isn’t invited back - that’s what he said last time and strangely he’s been given the platform again. Go Ricky!

@@helenjoejoe7855 You misunderstood Vicki, wasn't talking about 2021. His first Golden Globes MC gig was similarly harsh if not harsher, but he just kept getting invited back. And we're all thankful for it.

Ricky really meant it when he said he didn't care. He had no intention of returning to the Globes, so he unloaded everything. Just love this man.
And the best part is, the HFPA keeps calling him. I remember he said he wouldn't return to doing the Golden Globes the first time he hosted them. And now does this in the 5th. Maybe because they know when he's there, there will be a roast, so they know Ricky is a ratings magnet, specially in a time when TV ratings are going off a cliff

I LOVE me some Ricky Gervais! All anybody has to do is watch anyone of his TV shows to see his humanity (The Office, Extras, After Life, Derek). He doesn't hold back, yet there is real substance to his comedy without it being vulgar. He is brilliant IMHO.
Even though The Office is legendary, I recommend he react to Extras first 👍

He wrote the original "The Office", he was just as harsh on previous occasions. His stand up is even harsher
He mentions the TV show 'Afterlife' at one point. This is his own dark comedy series he wrote and plays in. Brilliant piece of work, check it out if you have the opportunity.
In an interview during the promotion of this show he said: "You can't make a joke that someone, somewhere, won't find offensive, so you shouldn't try." This pretty much sums up how Ricky Gervais works.

The Golden Globes are far more relaxed than the Oscars. It would be great to see Ricky hosting the Oscars but I doubt they would dare.

Ricky has got Netflix money, he truly doesn't care. He wrote The Office and starred in the original UK version. If you've seen the US version, you might find the UK one hard to watch as is it quite different in feel. The next show he did was "Extras" and that is well worth a look at. Lots of famous people in that.

Totally agree about The Office differences. I originally saw the UK one & couldn't even "get" the US one. It's so different that if you like one, you might not like (or understand) the other.

The ratings for this award show is the highest yet, cause of Ricky Gervais. People wanted to see him roast them all. And man does he do it.
He does it so well.
He created a brilliant series called "Derrick" a man who lives in a care home, brilliant comedy that draws the importance to care workers.
Derek, not Derrick. Derrick is some German super old TV show with an old fart detective.
I loved Derek... his acting was brilliant. Afterlife is also brilliant.

I been watching a few of these “ American Reacts” I’m from Liverpool UK and find it interesting how many English jokes go straight over the heads of my American cousins! Clearly showing the difference in our humour 👍🏻🤣

Ricky has been doing thirty minute monologues on Twitter three times a week during all this pandemic from his home, just talking anything, and they are posted onto CZcams afterwards, he is just starting filming for series 3 of his show 'Afterlife' so is down to one monologue a week at present, though he does short talks of a few minutes when he feels like it.
It is so good to be able to hear from him all this last year.
That wasn't the end, it was just his opening speech. He ripped on them even more throughout the show.
Ricky's kind of humour is such a breath of fresh air in a time when everyone is so scared to say what they really think. Ricky doesn't just address the elephant in the room, he dresses it up and teaches it to dance..
He genuinely has no filter!. 🤣

I remember seeing this the day after the Golden Globes. I laughed my ass off. He is so spot on ...this was an epic burn and so true.

Ricky Gervais is a LEGEND! Zero f**ks given - he just says it like it is - he refuses to be censored. He is a master of his craft - up there with Bill Burr, Louis CK, Chappelle. I've seen him do stand-up live - HILARIOUS! He was one of the first comedians to do podcasts - they were so funny they animated it and made it into a series (The Ricky Gervais Show) - he introduced us to Karl Pilkington who was his producer with an amazingly but unintentionally funny bloke that had a very unique take on everyday life. You should check some of those out 🤣 He's also written a lot of sitcoms - my fav is 'Derek', but he's most famous for writing 'The Office'. We need more people like Ricky in this world! And his other Golden Globe awards were just as good as this - check those out! He does loads of work for animal charities too 😹 Great guy all round👏👏👏

Ricky is the best! He says whatever pleases him. He's worth $100 million plus so I'm sure that makes it easier not to care what others think. And they still hire him, so... Plus he loves animals, but he's said as for humans, he could take them or leave them. His shows "Derek" and "Afterlife" and his standup comedy special "Humanity" are all amazing. Love him!

No, the american one is definitely better, not by much, but in terms or writing and character development its definitely superior. Don't let the fact that something is a foreign remake blind you to the truth.

Ricky is Ricky and will always stay true. He was born on a council estate (I believe they are called the projects/public housing in the USA). He's just a down to earth guy, love him! What I've heard there's so many dodgy goings on in Hollywood it needs exposing.
Not enough people are brutally honest anymore. We NEED Ricky more than he needs us.

He fricking roasted the entire Hollywood community, not giving 1/2 of one percent of an F. You can tell in the beginning, they kind of went with it, and Leo went with it, but by the end many were looking a little butthurt, especially when he talked about people giving political speeches when they accept awards. LOL
Ricky is at his funniest when he’s clearly in the “I just don’t give a f**k” mode 😆😆😆. I especially loved the “this is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs” line ... That was COMEDY GOLD!!! ☝️😝
Also After Life is his series and it is really really good. Especially for people how lost someone it could help healing in my opinion.

I think the only two people that were laughing honestly were Adam Driver and Martin Scorsese (after the theme park crack, I swear he was saying "it's true, it's true").

Surprised you haven't seen this before. It was all over the internet, particularly the reaction channels, for quite some time. It made headlines at the time, too. He's done so much great stuff. He writes all his own material, sometimes in collaboration with Stephen Merchant. He wrote the Office and it's probably his best known show in the States. I personally prefer the original British version, which he also starred in but others may disagree. Exras is another fantastically funny show, full of A-listers and a couple of Z-listers too. Derek was a popular show but is my least favourite, of his tv shows. 'After Life' is a must watch! Dark, funny and full of humanity. Great show! :) His stand-up shows are all fantastically hilarious and thought-provoking too. Well worth a look! During each lockdown, he did daily podcasts about whatever was on his mind. They're great fun too, even though they're laid-back and off the cuff. :)

He probably missed some of the references. I didn't understand at first the Felicity Huffman and the Ronan Farrow jokes. Then I went, looked it up, and when I saw who was each, it clicked and I proceeded to bust my ass laughing. Ricky is ruthless, and must be protected at all costs for that
Yeah, definitely have to be tuned into all the current happenings to get a lot of these jokes. I think the only one I didn’t get was Sophie’s Choice since I’ve never seen it. Still was funny tho.
