2001 DMC: After encountering Dante twice, Nelo Angelo regains his consciousness and reveals that he was Vergil, now under the control of the Devil Emperor Mundus. He and Dante fight once more, with Dante ultimately victorious and left to mourn the loss of his possessed brother.
2003 DMC2: Vergil does not appear, nor is he referenced.
2005 DMC3: Vergil challenges Dante to a battle to trick him into coming so Vergil could take his half of the perfect amulet, and enter the demon world to gain the power of their father Sparda which was sealed away. After the man he was working with betrayed him and stole Sparda’s power for himself, Vergil and Dante team up to stop the madman making a mockery of their father’s legacy, before squaring off one last time. Vergil is unable to move on past his pursuit of power and willingly plunged himself into the depths of Hell after telling Dante to leave him (even rejecting his brother trying to reach out to him), before going out in a blaze of glory fighting against his father’s enemy: Mundus.
2008 DMC4: Nero acquires the Yamato, Vergil’s Sword, and defeats the Order of the Sword. Vergil himself does not appear, though he is referenced.
2013 DmC: After an entire game of “Dante” and “Vergil” trying to “save” the world, “Vergil” just decides to be evil at the end I guess, and tries to get you to join him.
2019 DMC5: After Vergil splits himself into Urizen and V, V begins to realize all the horrible stuff Vergil did. He teams up with Dante and Nero, makes an attempt to almost apologize to Lady for DMC3, and then Dante tells Urizen how their mom tried to save Vergil too but she died before getting the chance, and when V And Urizen reunite into Vergil he begins to question his life. Nero, after learning about his heritage, fights the real Vergil and convinces him to finally turn over a new leaf, but Vergil still being... well Vergil, throws his son, Nero, his book (one of his most treasured possessions), but also tells him that he won’t lose next time.
And people still say DmC had a better story, somehow.

People claim DmC had a better story? The actual fuck? I didn't watch any of the promotional material for DMC 5, and I got into the series in 2019. I finished 3 and 4 and attempted one but it just felt way to archaic to me. When I got into five I was actually stunned by the story beats and I loved the game and its ending. I've only seen some of the clips of DmC, but I only need one to know enough about the game, that being the one where Donte and a boss keep telling each other to go fuck themselves with the boss saying she would, what was the exact phrasing btw, rip off his head and piss on his corpse or something like that?

What people actually mean to say is that “DmC: devil may cry has better *THEMES*” because the themes in that game are moderately decent, but the story and the way it’s told are utter nonsense
Now, that’s not to say they’d be any less wrong, a preference in themes is subjective and there’s not a lot of ways you can say “This theme is better than this one!” Unless one of the themes is blatantly stupid e.g. “nazi’s are good” or “video games make people violent”

About inFAMOUS 2, they are called the militia... because they are a militia. There is no point in naming a movement that literally could not afford to spend time coming up with a name. It isn't like with Cole who single-handedly puts Empire City into and out of chaos thus earning the name "Demon of Empire City". Like there is no reason for the militia to come up with a name, they aren't some kind of fantasy world group of rebels trying to usurp a country, they are militia wanting to take back their city and put things back to normal.

Beyond the obvious I always saw Vergil's biggest strength as an antagonist being his disregard for giving us a reason why he is the way he is. Sure there are some underlying threads leading back to his mother but at the end of the day he doesn't need to justify himself to anyone in his eyes. He has his goals and nobody is going to stand in his way, end of. And that gives him such a rock solid, yet mysterious vibe of conviction it's impossible not to be wowed by him.

    • @skippitylip6524

      @FatalFist Před 5 lety +6

Exactly. He doesn't even hate humanity because to him, humanity are rodents that are simply there and if they get caught up in everything - they're just collateral damage.

    • @FatalFist
      @FatalFist Před 5 lety +6

@@skippitylip6524 Well there's a lot of "open to interpretation" with the character. That's why I loved him in DMC3. He erected the tower to bring hell onto Earth just so he could ascertain power. But to do what exactly? I always thought he was on this quest for power because he secretly blamed his own father for not being their to save Eva, Dante and Vergil's mother. So his whole path was trying to be the man he wanted to believe his father was.
In DmC, I do feel NT missed some vital notes with trying to make Vergil more believable. But I did like his psychosis, falling into madness because he was left, after being beaten by Dante, to question himself on why he lost. In doing so, he started to question aspects of himself and create demons through his own thoughts that in turn pushed him deeper. I thought that was actually neat on a psychological level because it makes you wonder what Mundus did to Vergil after DMC3. Surely it wasn't so much as, "Oop, you touched me and now I'll name you Nelo Angelo!"

  • @SpeckObst
    @SpeckObst Před 9 lety +157

That scene where Vergil tells Dante about his past and how only a nephilim can defeat the demon lord shows just how small minded the authors actually are. When you plaster the walls with graffiti that clearly represents your story and you even focus on it more than the characters, you fucking failed. They couldn't have shoved it farther into our faces if they tried. There is no subtext, there is no symbolism, no metaphors, it's just showing us the literal meaning of what Vergil is saying like a coloring book or a kids show for five year olds.
And it also doesn't make any sense. Why is that shit even there? Yeah, having one painting in the background that resembles the meaning could be believeable. But this? it just comes off as trying too hard and takes you even further out of the game.
The worst part is, that I don't get it. Was this written by completely different people than Enslaved? Because that game actually had very clever designs that both worked in terms of "Journey to the West" and the world the game takes place in. The story in that game also tried way to hard and never understand the subtle use of symbolism, but in DmC it's just terrible. I honestly thought this was done by edgy tryhard high schoolers who just watched Fight Club for the first time.

Devil May Cry wasn't based around any anime's, the original first DMC was actually going to be Resident Evil 4. But because the game was a lot more action based, the developer decided to switch the zombies with demons, and Leon with - you guessed it, Dante. It's what he looks somewhat similar in facial features to Leon from previous titles, but eh.
But yeah, if anything, the reboot had more anime cliches than the original games.

Lilith despite being rather disgusting, didnt need to see her own baby explode from within her. Demons have feelings too you know. Goes to show how vile the scene really is, as simply shooting her first would have been a little kinder than the kid first. But hey, anything to get some cheap shock value and some sort of set up to the Virgil “misunderstanding”. God this game is bad.. There's a legit reason he wanted power. It's called SUBTEXT. It's in his actions and his words. Vergil wants to gain power so that he will never lose anything close to him ever again, like how he and Dante lost their mom to a demon sent by Mundus.
"Might controls everything - and without strength, you cannot protect anything; let alone yourself."
That line he said to Dante after defeating him the first time speaks volumes of his motivation. Notice how he never tried to legitimately kill Dante until their final encounter. It's because he was trying his damnedest to convince Dante to embrace his demon heritage because he genuinely cares for his brother, unlike bitch-boy, fedora tipping Vino.
He seeks power so that he can become better than his father yet ironically abhors human weakness and hates himself for being half human. Sparda risked his life to defend humanity and fight for those he loved. Vergil is a hypocrite who considers human weak, yet fails to realize they possess a quality most demons lack, possibly what drove Sparda to fall in love with a human woman in the first place.
Vergil's goal is an ironically cruel fate in the grand scheme of things. He wishes to become the most powerful demon, not to rule the demon world or even dominate humans, but so that he will be unchallenged and never lose anyone dear to him again. The irony is that the only one who he has left is his brother, Dante, and at the end of it all is willing to kill him to achieve his goal. Which will leave him with nothing when you think about it, really nailing home how insane Vergil truly is. Another reason why he doesn't completely answer Dante's question is because he TRULY doesn't know what he'll do once he obtains his power. His whole life was centered around pursuing power that, should he obtain it, what he sacrificed to get it will just leave it a hollow victory.

It's kind of funny how the original Vergil is a power-hungry but admirably clever and honourable character - he hides his emotions, but he's not evil, just misguided. He's surprisingly sincere about everything he does, and has no illusions about nobility. Almost definitely has an inferiority complex, and he wants power for power's sake (it would guarantee him physical safety, though not psychological safety).
The reboot Vergil is more expressive, and he seems to pursue power and freedom because he is self-conscious about his strength (which is kind of like a retcon to make him more similar to OG Vergil, since we get this insight from the DLC), but he conceals his powerlust by claiming humans need a ruler. He killed Lilith, but worse, he killed the child first. Stabbed Mundus from behind. He wanted everybody around him to die for perceived slights, not actual conflicts. This to me differs him immensely from OG Vergil - reboot Vergil is a liar and dishonourable. And unlike Vergil, who despite being a bastard, conceals a good side, reboot Vergil conceals a deep ugliness inside of him and convinces himself he's righteous.

Because what I think, is that no human should be treated as inferior compared to someone else.
Because that is exactly the type of thinking that creates conflict, and terrorization.
I cannot tell you how long I had to deal with shit like this, and how much suffering this has caused. Not just for me, but for so many other people as well. Those are the type of situations that are caused by the actual bastards, and Vergil is certainly *not* one of them.

They know how to look for bullet points, ie. are the graphics "advanced", are the controls streamlined, do the people in these cutscenes sound like they act for a living, and is there an interesting mechanic or two.
Problem is that the people that watch IGN videos tend to only really care about that stuff. The smarter guys in the business tend to get the most hate from the community when they release a review that looks deeper into things (usually narrative and pacing). Having played through all 4 Devil May Cry games (with 3 being my favourite and 4 nearly hitting the mark), I'm happy. Happy, because I now have every right to legitimately pan DmC and call Ninja Theory out on their bullshit. Devil May Cry 3 was much simpler in terms of story than in this game, yet it did so much more.
Dante's crushing defeat at the hands of Vergil atop the tower was genuinely impactful, and Vergil himself saw no other way than his own. He stuck to his convictions, selfish though it may be, and stopped at nothing to purge the world of the weak. Despite being the main antagonist, he made a lot of valid points, like when he tells Dante that without power, he will never be able to protect the things he loves. Instead of crying and bruding over his defeat, Dante picks himself right back up with his new-found Devil Trigger awakened. He's still alive, and he knows that as long as he's alive, he has to see this through to the end. He knows there's no time for doubts, and doing so would be a betrayal of who he is. The only way to save the world from Vergil is by surpassing him whist sticking to his own convictions. He gains the power Vergil spoke of, but through his own way, and his faith in humanity that drives him.
Yeah, I know it sounds very cliche, but the cutscenes managed to convey all of those raw emotions and inspirational themes without spoon-feeding it to the audience. The extreme difficulty curve of the game actually adds to the whole experience, too. You have to earn the right to meet Vergil in the final mission. The game's tough, but incredibly fun and addictive. Each fight is well-designed and fair to the player. You have all the tools you need to win, you just have to do your part. The combat system requires the player to mix up their moves with flashy combos whilst dodging the enemy's attacks and taunting them to reach the SSS (Stylish) rank, earning them more rewards and making for one of the best combat systems in any game. Let's also remember that all of this happened in glorious 60fps, even on PAL PS2's, when Capcom finally decided to give UK players the option to play in 60Hz.
Compare all of that to this... DmC: Devil May Cry. 30fps unless you're lucky enough to have waited for the Definitive edition to experience it, a deeper yet still stupid story full of teenage angst and nursery-level politcal commentary that they force-feed you to leave little to the imagination, a dumbed-down combat system in which you can spam the same moveset repeatedly to get SSS (as well as a colour-coded enemy mechanic, because Ninja Theory forgot that they were making a hack'n'slash game and not fucking Ikaruga), super saiyan fights apparently (you can mindlessly slash away at enemies in mid-air now with minimal effort and no sense of accomplishment, unlike with Nero's awesome grabbing mechanic which took skill AND rewarded you with a higher combo rank and extra damage to enemies), and shitter, more detestable counter parts to the ones found in the better games. It doesn't help that Ninja Theory thought they were the big I Am because Capcom let them make the game, and because they had "better hardware than the first three games", it automatically means everything they bring to the table is better than what came before it. I get it. It's a reboot. It's supposed to be different. But you can't tell me that the "Not in a million years..." scene isn't an immature and shameful reaction to die-hard fans on their part, can you? And how can you not blame people like HyperBitHero, GamingBrit, GamingSins e.t.c for comparing Ninja Theory's defication to the superior games it's based on?
Sure, I wouldn't mind giving the Definitive Edition a try whenever I get a PS4, but I'm also going to be basking in DMC4: Special Edition's combat mechanics and Legendary Dark Knight mode at the same time, this time with the much better Vergil than Bigger Dick Vergil. On it's own, DmC is not a bad game overall. It is enjoyable if you let yourself enjoy it. But damn... It's just so depressing to know that Angry Joe's review of it is the most popular Devil May Cry-related video on CZcams. It doesn't deserve that coverage. I don't care if you're an inexperienced player at the hack-and-slash genre. So was I when I played the first 2 Devil May Cry games. They did a good enough job of easing me in to the genre, and by that time, I was ready to tackle the third game again and this time get past the second boss (granted, I was also ready for anything more exciting than DMC2). There's no excuse for you not to get the originals before DmC, especially considering how cheap they are second-hand.
Well, there's my long-winded take-rant on the whole situation. I'd like to thank HyperBitHero for really putting into perspective the reasons why DmC is so flawed in the character department, because we're not just angry about Dante's hair, contrary to what all the ignorant, trailer-trash nay-sayers who don't know the meaning of the word research like to say.

+NintendanGX Not to mention the 1st 3 original DMC games are available for Xbox 360 and PS3 in an awesome HD collection that even includes the special edition version of DMC 3. Not many people know this, but because of complaints about how easy DMC 2 was Capcom released DMC 3 in America with the Japanese hard mode as the American normal mode. DMC 3: Special Edition finally allows American players the option to play the "real" (aka Japanese) normal mode. The point I'm trying to make is that if anyone here wanted to play DMC 3 but was turned off by the game's difficulty the special edition is out there for PS2 and as part of the HD collection for PS3 and Xbox 360. In addition, I want people to know you don't have to own a PS2 to play the original DMC trilogy on a console. There is literally no excuse, if you've played the original version DmC: Devil May Cry you can play the original trilogy and DMC 4 just as easily on the same consoles. I won't judge you too harshly, however, if you choose to skip DMC 2. DMC 2 just sucks.

DMC3's story is simple but extremely well presented. Most of the story and true intention of the characters are expressed through subtle dialogs & their expression instead of those forceful dump-downed Sssshakespearan conversation. DMC3 is still one of my top 5 video game of all time.

@WarWolf Well, they're badly done because Dante is like a rebel teen at this age. Ideally this was to be his origin story where he later would grab a bike and set up a home in some rundown bar and then you'd have DMC3 some years later. So Dante's character made sense somewhat. Vergil on the other hand, he moved like the Vergil we love but they definitely twisted him with giving him a sick and twisted personality which I wasn't a fan of.
In DMC3, you know Vergil's twisted based on how he believes he killed Arkham. "To further your study in the black arts, you sacrificed your loving wife to become a devil as well. Knowing this, I thought you would be more use to me. But I was wrong." The delivery of that quote with how monotone and methodical Vergil is definitely paints a twisted personality behind a stoic shade.

I honestly have to wonder what this Vergil would have been like if they'd gone with the _original_ version of DMC's Dante. There might have been some interesting conflict between this Vergil and a smoking, antisocial Dante. What does he think of the fact that his brother is constantly getting into trouble with the demonic forces of the world? What does he feel about the Dante basically being a depressive smoker?
Unfortunately since they tried to appease fans (and failed by not appeasing them enough) we'll probably never get to see that interaction.

+Chewable Arsenic Candies You know, now that I think about it, a drug-addict Dante would be very interesting if they retained that aspect of his character.
This Dante would have had more potential to grow as a character because in the very first trailer for DmC, Dante being interrogated implies that he's been through so much with Mundus and the Demons that his perspective towards his life would clash with Vergil's own throughout DmC.
The drugs iteslf would serve as an interesting story element in that it would have also explained how Dante learned to use Rebellion, gained lots of experience in doing all types of odd jobs (which would help foreshadow the establishment of his own shop).
I know it can be apalling at first, but I'm sure that if Ninja Theory pulled this off right, Dante would have quit smoking eventually anyway; I was never bothered by that part of his character. I was bothered by the fact that when I was watching that trailer, that they changed his personality. And THAT would be a more pressing issue.
Either way, both the main games and DmC leave so much to be desired in terms of the story. How can I know more about these characters and the lore when there is so little to explore?

I don't think DmC Vergil wanting to rule humanity "for their own good" makes him any less evil. If anything that makes him worse. He's so full of himself and looks down on humanity so much that he thinks that they need to be protected by himself as some higher being. That's the attitude of an evil dictator if there ever was one. Not that it makes his character better or anything.
In comparing how Vergil fights in DmC vs. DMC3 I have to agree. Or well, kind of. I've never finished DMC3 (only ever got to the boss rush level on Normal), so most of my experience of his mechanics comes from playing as him multiple times in DMC4SE. Comparing that to how he plays in the DmC DLC, there's such a huge difference in terms of feel. Some sword moves and special abilities are the same, but in DmC he feels sort of clumsy. Very stop-start and without a natural flow to him. In DMC4SE, he's brilliant to play. So quick and fluid. It's crazy how different they can make the same character feel.

He even says they'll "respect their subjects, not enslave them." He is doing this out of a will to do good, it's just that he is too full of himself to see that no one wants him to rule over them, haha.

Up until that point, the human race had managed to get along without being hunted and slaughtered by demons thanks to Mundus' barrier. Now that those prats had broken it down, they'd just unleashed a torrent of chainsaw-armed monstrosities onto the population and nobody was really prepared for such an event. It's stupid of Dante to assume they can just let the humans do what they want now, since society had just undergone such an enormous upheaval. If anything, Vergil was crucial because he's at least someone who pretends to understand what's going on around him.

You don't even have to be a longtime DMC fan or DMC classic purist to even realize that DmC's adaptation of Vergil is just nothing short of embarrassing on the fact he was just poorly written as a character let alone another cliche self righteous antagonist.
Which they even made worst with that forcefully contrived edge lord wubfest that was the VD DLC. Which had a poorly timed Pre-order launch which intentionally spoiled the upcoming plot of the game like "no shit Sherlock, have you ever played a DMC title?". Ninja Theory clearly had an active reimagining but they absolutely failed in understanding what made these characters iconic in the first fucking place; which ultimately they and there apologist assume is purely just a weeaboo thing.
In any staple third person character action title. Vergil made his mark in DMC 3 as the definitive badass rival character in Gaming. Not because he wore opposing colors and had a completely opposite demeanor and style of fashion, no. A good rival character is designed to not only have an opposing ideology to you the protagonist; but also has an active and endearing presence that constantly re-evaluates your own capability and mastery at the game. Thus by overcoming this person who seemingly can kick your ass, you the player feel greatly empowered when you defeat them, and none of the cliche plotwist bullshit that had almost little to no direct build-up to a poorly executed final battle.
I wish the next Devious Extent actually gives a better example of how an endearing rival character should be portrayed. Like Jetstream Sam.

The end plot twist was unbearable honestly. I could at least tolerate it more if he brought it up early on and came back to it multiple times in conversations with Dante. Maybe he could have had a struggle figuring out if it was right or wrong to control humans for the sake of protecting them from the demons and themselves leading to his ultimate decision at the end end to turn on Dante after he himself disagrees with the idea altogether.
Even THEN it still wouldn't work well enough because how would he be strong enough to fight Dante (The killer of Mundus) even though he had Dante go on all of these errandswtfisthisplothelpmeimdying.

There's alot of hidden hints in the game that give this conclusion, you probably just don't remember or didn't care at first
      - in the first ever scene he appears, he was using a mask on tv trying to sway public opinion
      - when dante meets him, you can see him on the shadows while dante is in the light
      - about the only a nephilim can beat the demon king, there's that Demon vs Angel paint on the wall, Vergil on the demon side and Dante in the angel one
      - he most of the times manipulates both dante and kat
      - he literally killed mundus child, he did that before even killing lilith, just to piss off mundus, dante got really mad over that
      So yeah, is that enough?

I'm gonna be honest. I did enjoy the game DmC but eventually with some digging and an open mind the game overall is just decent (it's not bad but not good).
I do like the gameplay, and level designs but the story is poorly written and executed in-game, and the characters are very generic westernized versions of The original characters. I find myself playing the old games more than this attempted reboot for a franchise that wasn't even dead to begin with. In short, Capcom made a dumb move. Not to mention the fact that Ninja Theory (mostly Tammen) were so chidlish that they couldn't take criticism all too well, but then again a lot of fans made that hard as there was little to no constructive criticism to begin with. I don't blame fans for the way they feel about the game but most of the responses towards it was very immature and irrational. I know for a fact the majority of the fanbase overhates this game and exaggerate a lot of weak elements to it. We're taking about a fan base that petition to the President of ending imports of the game. I mean seriously, that was stupid. Ninja Theory however are one's to blame at this poorly executed game and they way they reacted to the fans and basically shitted on them was totally immature for gaming developers to behave.
The only thing I could say about this game was that it had potential to be a good game but everything about the development was basically butchering itself. I felt that the idea of the twins being nephilim was an intresting concept and I didn't see the humanity factor being lost in story, just terribly overshadowed by everything else. I compare the subtle meaning to Superman's character. Superman has the ablity to change the world with the power he holds. Most people look up to him as a Savior or a God but some people do fear his capabilities. For he can also be humanities destruction, to become metaphorically a Devil. In the end however, Superman just wants to make the choices he believes to be right, like any other person does. He wants to be what humanity wants to transcend. Human. This is how I see it in DmC. The Twins have incredible abilities to change the world, to be looked upon to be Gods or feared as Devils. DmC Vergil practical shows this as his perspective on humans is true. We are in fact weak, we are our own worst enemies. We have to potential to create beautiful things while at the same time the ability to destroy everything. He gains a God complex and uses it as an excuse as to why he and DmC Dante should rule humanity, so he can protect the humans. DmC Dante however, while not being human himself for his whole life believed he was human and for how shitty humanity can be, he sees potential and wants them to be left alone for there own choices. He's a nephilim who wants to be human. Like Superman he chooses a human path instead of playing God or become a Devil. Which in the End of DmC Vergil's Downfall he becomes a Devil. This is the message I gained by keeping an open mind but even I can see how horribly executed this game was at making this point. The game's writing is a complete mess and the damage is already done fot any further potential development this game could've got. It had potential to be better but it's never gonna happen. I honestly don't care if this gets a sequel or not.
I'll accept DmC into the franchise but I will never accept it as a reboot of the franchise (To me it's more of a reimagining but thank goodness it's not part of the main series). Devil May Cry still lives on through the fans as definitely shown by the sales of Devil May Cry 4 SE. Eventually we'll get a Devil May Cry game that goes into the story that epically gives us enjoyment through our lives. Whether it's a prequel or a sequel of the titles of Devil May Cry, it will truly live on in our hearts because it knows what it's doing. That's what makes Devil May Cry a brilliant series.
Have a problem with Demons infesting the neighborhood? Call 1-800 Devil May Cry

I really liked Limbo and the crazy setting that felt rather more fitting for a DMC game than the holy-looking visuals of DMC4 (which I also liked though), I wouldn't mind a sequel 'cause I wanna play more in Limbo :/
Kinda unfair to compare a (not really) villain from a sub-par (but fun) game to such a legendary and awesome character from an equally legendary & awesome game; the commentary was way longer than I expected without a lot of substance, but the nitty gritty comparison was called for I guess.
I want both series to continue TBH, I really liked the artistic direction of the reboot. But I also think it would be hard getting more ideas for either games at this point without recycling a lot, or seemingly copying other games that were inspired by the franchise in the first place.

Nick Grey So the most relevant non-original series character in DmC is Nero... because he doesn't appear. I do wonder what Ninja Theory would've done with him, probably murder him in a cutscene or something to spite the original series and the fans.

One praise I never understood for the rebooted Donte and Vergil is the whole "at least they're not anime characters this time!" (compared to, uh, whatever "anime" the originals were supposed to be from?), as if edgelord Dante and "Euphoric" Vergil are somehow more preferable?
And criticizing something for being too "anime" just reeks of, I don't know, racism to begin with anyway. If it's too cartoony/over-the-top, then just say so. Implying that the previous titles were nowhere near as good because of how "Japanese" it was is just stupid on multiple levels.

+MundoSD You know, I never understood that criticism either. The series as a whole screams of a shonen jump manga--especially DMC3.
This is a series where the hero is constantly impaled on his own sword, he has no trouble talking to a half naked version of his mother, he willingly allows his business partner to put a gun to his head, taunts his enemies all the time. is constantly in debt, loses in all forms of gambling, and gets drunk enough to propose to a mop, . I don't see where realism comes into play
