    Coming back to this video, I noticed something interesting in Vergil's last scene in DMC 3.
    There's a nuance that's barely noticeable in his last scene. While he sounds confident in himself about to fight 'the prince of darkness', notice he threw away his scabbard. Completely uncharacteristic of Vergil, who's most elegant and always sheaths his Yamato immediately after use. According to old Eastern swordsman code, there is never EVER a reason for one to toss their scabbard . . . unless the wielder feels it will be the last time they can. In other words, if they think this fight will mean their death.
    Seeing as how DMC 3 was obsessed with subtle body language in all of its cutscenes, this had to have been intentional. It's almost as if, despite his vow of confidence, Vergil knows deep down that this will be his last real fight before his end. For anyone that already played DMC 1 and is aware he becomes Nelo Angelo makes it even sadder. This was such a perfect way to end this concise saga of Dante's brother

    • @CureMiracle
      @CureMiracle Před 3 lety +10

      I felt it too. He was shocked to believe Dante had enough cruelty to actually kill his only kin in this world for the sole reason of a disagreement. It sadly turned out that Dante had no problem doing it over and over.
      At this point Vergil has already learned to respect Dante's decision to remain in the human world and has been repeatedly urging him to leave before the portal closed, but Dante has not learned to respect Vergil's decision to remain in the underworld in the same manner and insisted to stop him.
      Vergil clearly held back in this fight and tried to end the fight ASAP. He even admitted he lost and urged Dante to leave. But because Dante still insisted to fight, Vergil made the difficult choice of selfless sacrifice. Before he charged against Dante, Vergil's eyes were really sad, like Ironman's eyes before he made the snap that killed himself with Thanos. He already sensed his demise coming.
      When he was dashing towards Dante, he held the Force Edge sideways and the blade facing Dante. But when they mated, he pulled it back to his own side and raised it overhead to skip Dante. It's quite clear to see. His sword was entirely on his side when viewing from above. He basically raised his hands and let Dante hit him. It was intentional. He just wanted to end the fight so that Dante wouldn't be trapped in the underworld with him.
      Dante really used Vergil's love over him to beat and harm Vergil, although not intentionally. He was still clueless until he saw Vergil picked up his mother's amulet and left the Force Edge to him. It was until that moment that he finally knew Vergil was protecting him. To prevent further relay, Vergil even jumped down so that Dante would make haste and leave ASAP.
      It's really very sad. Vergil's life would have been entirely different if he entered the underworld in full health. With that kind of fatal wounds, things would not turn out to be good for him no matter he stays in the underworld or returns to the human world. He was damaged beyond repair. It's really not that staying in the underworld is a bad thing, but that suffering such bodily harm is. Dante really shouldn't harm him simply for an disagreement. Having been to the underworld numerous times later on, he knew that was not the end of day for either of them, and Vergil can literally return through a portal at any time.

    The writing in DMC3 doesn't really get as much credit as it deserves. Sure it's by no means a masterpiece of video game writing or anything but the character development for the three main characters is suprisingly subdued as far as action games go.
    To me this is the perfect type of writing for this kind of game, the gameplay is ridiculous and over the top and for the most part so is the story but sometimes there is a little bit of humanity poking through all of the ridiculous action.

    Also another interesting bit to point out; the player works as a physical metaphor for Dante's human side. His demonic power is accessed through the controller and is always there, but his drive to continue going through each stage, confront each boss or retry when losing all your HP . You, as a human, care about what is happening in the game so you continue to push Dante forward through each new trial. The Souls series has a similar dynamic where you are the MC's drive to stay human and not go crazy despite all the constant deaths

  • @Adorni
    @Adorni Před 6 lety +376

    Devil May Cry 3 is my single favorite action game. The game has such great writing, and Vergil is the best example of that: People who aren't paying attention dismiss him as one-dimensional, but there's so much depth to him beneath the surface, much like the rest of the game. Anyone who pays attention can see that Vergil is a good person who is still suffering from his mother's death, and the sheer, traumatizing sense of powerlessness he felt at being unable to protect her. Vergil's actions in the game almost always speak to his thoughts and personality. For example: A lot of people think that Vergil killing Arkham was him disposing of Arkham due to the human's "weakness" for his daughter. That's not what I saw, however: Vergil obviously knew of Arkham's actions in the past, as well as his duplicitous nature. Because Vergil's mother was still such an important motivating factor to him, I think the idea that Arkham murdered his own wife, just for a bit of power, sickened him. But he _needed_ Arkham's knowledge to unlock the secrets of the Temen ni Gru. Once he had them, however, he no longer needed to put up with Arkham's presence, and instead choose to kill him, satisfying his hatred and intolerance for someone who is very much an antithesis for Vergil himself.
    See, when I say the game has "great writing," I mean the way it explains its characters, without them having to sit and engage in dialogue. DMC's dialogue is corny and hammy, so technically it's not "good." Contrast this with the recent God of War, which I feel has bad writing, but good dialogue. Kratos and his son talk to each other. A LOT. But there's nothing to really infer or speculate on there because it's all literally on the surface. Kratos even tells Atreus (and by proxy the viewer) "I am sad about your mother's death, but I'm choosing not to express it visually." Specifically, he says "Do not mistake my silence for lack of grief, Boy." That's good dialogue in my opinion, but bad writing, because the writer felt that Kratos' expressions or sentiments weren't clear enough to the people playing the game, and so we needed Kratos to assure us with his words that yes, he is sad about his wife's death.
    Meanwhile we have great scenes like the one, for example, where Lady gives Dante her Kalina Ann: She tells him "I'm lending this to you," which means she expects Dante to come back from what is very likely a suicidal mission. She has faith that Dante will return, however. This is almost the exact opposite position from where she started from when she first encountered him. And as if to further prove their skill at writing, Dante takes it, and moves in to kiss her, but she turns her head, refusing him. And rather than yak on about it, Dante silently pulls away, respecting her sentiment. We don't need a long, drawn out talky-talky scene between the two to express how they feel about each other, or this situation, because the game's writing SHOWS IT TO US.

    • @Adorni
      @Adorni Před 6 lety +40

      Joseph Bishkey Thanks for the comment. Another thing I didn't mention is how well they hew to the "rules" established by Devil May Cry 1 in regards to the fight with Arkham: Namely, Arkham acquires the two halves of Sparda's amulet, but he lacks Sparda's blood. So when he gains the Force Edge, it unleashes a large amount of the sword's power, but not it's _true_ form. And then when Vergil gets it, he he has the Blood, but not both halves of the amulet. In Vergil's hands the sword is extremely deadly, but he can't utilize its full power no matter how hard he may try. They could have dicked around with this, but the fact that they were careful in regards to this detail shows how much love and care they put into the game.

    • @Adorni
      @Adorni Před 6 lety +18

      Omio Rahman That would depend on the framing. We can tell that Vergil doesn't just kill because he can, since he largely ignored Lady, particularly when she was alone and easy pickings. However, he's also apparently not above cutting down people who get in his way, either. I don't think he'll kill Kyrie, but he'll either abduct her for some unexplained reason, or do enough damage to her when she tries to stop him that she has to be hospitalized, driving Nero's motive to hunt him down and get his revenge. There's a lot of ways this scenario can play out, and I'd like to see what they're going to do with it.

      @Joseph Bishkey I disagree about the corniness of the dialogue and its quality. Dmc3 is obviously trying to be what is essentially a hollywood action film or saturday morning cartoon with its over the top action and goofy lines. The dialogue being so over the top fits in perfectly with the tone and style of the game. Meanwhile GoW is trying to be more realistic and grounded and so the dialogue is much more...realistic and grounded.

    Glad to hear someone acknowledge that the character building for some of the main cast in DMC3 was portrayed well enough for emotional investment. Sure, the story and a majority of the dialogue is made of ham and cheese (purposely so, I would suspect), but there are a number of sincere moments that help solidify characters such as Vergil.

If not taking into account Dante winning with it over Mundus in DMC, it says a lot about Vergil trying too hard to be like his farther instead of himself. It may have been a tie or even a win if Vergil would stick to his sword and his own fighting style.

    That ending always gets to me. When Vergil just cannot let his resentment and stubbornness go and even cuts Dante's hand when he falls. It's so bitter, and really sad. Some powerful themes and real human emotion going on in that scene, and in the whole game. I remember that scene really hitting me when I first played the DMC games. It felt so real. I have experienced situations like that in real life where I felt like either party in that scene.

    I like the implication that Dante won the final strike because he used the weapon he was familiar with, while Vergil overstepped and used one that he wasn't as skilled with and lacked the power he wanted from it at that moment. Or that he immediately went for his amulet and didn't bother to go for the sword.

    • @IMAFUCKINPOTATO
      @IMAFUCKINPOTATO Před 5 lety +3

      I always saw Vergil's final strike as being an intentional miss, because we see with the perspective, Vergil is holding the sword too high to actually connect with Dante, and doesn't begin to swing it until just a moment too late. It gives me the feel that even though Vergil was a dick he didn't want to kill his little brother.

    • @CureMiracle
      @CureMiracle Před 3 lety +1

      The final strike was an intentional miss. Vergil's eyes were sad as if he knew he was about to die. When he charged against Dante, he held the sword horizontal and the blade edge towards Dante. But when they were about to connect, he drew it back to his own side and raised it overhead to skip Dante. Seeing it from above, his sword is clearly on his own side. He had hesitated. He was too kind to harm his only kin. Sadly Dante is always cruel enough to harm and kill his only kin in the world.
      He preferred his mother's amulet over his father's sword. That's a symbol for his choice in life. He didn't actually love power. He wanted to protect his family. He left it intentionally because Dante in full health could make better use of it as he was already on the brink of dying.

    DMC3 does the final boss right. Just two guys giving their all in one epic and final battle. Not just you damaging the boss and then it is revealed he was only at half strength and then you have to fight him again. I also don't know why Vergil's voice in DMC3 gets a lot of hate. I think it's fine.
    I think Vergil and Dante's rivalry is one of the things definitely DMC3 does right. It's a pretty underrated gaming rivalry. Vergil is one of the most memorable rival characters in gaming.

Let alone yourself.” While the last quip is mocking Dante and playing into that brotherly rivalry, I truly believed Vergil wasn’t so much trying to dehumanize himself, but rather... he hated his father for not being their to protect Eva.
    See, I always thought Vergil’s quest for power was to be the man his father wasn’t. To be better. At the end of DMC3 where Vergil seals his fate, “It would be fun to fight the prince of darkness. If my father did it... I should be able to do it too!” He was always measuring himself up to his father and that right there screams volumes of his passion for conquest. IMHO, Vergil took the death of their human mother the hardest because as a boy, he couldn’t protect her.

    I think bringing Vergil back somehow in a post DMC1 game would be a disservice to his character. His stubbornness is his entire persona and what leads to his downfall at the end of 3 and his enslavement to Mundus, so to have Dante or Nero somehow find a way to rescue him and have everything be hunky dory would cheapen his character and story. Death has no weight when every great character is written out of it.

    I do hope we will one day get the true devil may cry 5 we all want, nero and dante teaming up to save him sounds like a wonderful experience. I could already picture a fantastic final fight being an homage to 3 where its dante and nero both being controlled by the player like dante and vergil in 3 fighting with vergil at the borderline between the human and demon world except they actually catch him this time if he winds up jumping off that cliff again.

    Awesome vid. Vergil is such an amazing character, and the perfect foil for Dante.I can't wait to see you lay a smackdown on DmC again in this next vid, HyperBit!

    Spoilers for DmC 5 (eventhough I only watched the gameplay, not playing it):
    DmC 5 really brought an interesting idea of what happened when Vergil separated his humanity from his demon side. V (Vergil's separated human side) kinda embraced his human side by following Nero (his son) and his gang throughout their journey, only to rejoined with his demon side at the end because they became severely weakened after they separated from each other. This may conclude that Vergil is now learning to appreciate his human side more, albeit not that much.

    It's always a real treat whenever you post a video. The Yakuza video you made is my favourite.

    I think Vergil is more a reluctant villain who falls down the path of corruption through pain of loss of his mother, he believes might makes right, and is the only way to protect those he cares about.

    DMC3 is such a goddamn good game. Far exceeding its oodles of _styyyyle_ and combat mechanics.

    love your videos man, the fact that we're into all the same games and appreciate them for the same reasons is something i hope i can say for other viewers, but the episodic nature of them (this 'Devious Intent' series for example of course) and level of detailed analysis included is something that makes them so re-watchable (if thats even a word?) subbed. keep it up man

    I've seen people criticize this video saying it feels more like a plot summary of DMC3 rather than an analysis of Vergil as a character, but to me I think that shows how good of an antagonist he is. He's involved in and related to every aspect of the story; him and Dante aren't constantly fighting the entire game but he's doing just as much as Dante is, and understanding what he does during the story and how he effects it and vice versa is integral to understanding his (no joke intended) motivations.
