  • Patrick de Gayardon (1960 - 1998) was a French skydiver, Skysurfer and a BASE jumper.
De Gayardon was famous for pushing the boundaries of skydiving, with many national and international competitive titles on his resume. He was one of the first people to develop the unique style of skysurfing, in which skydivers use a snowboard to make aerobatic maneuvers. He also made many flights with his personally developed ram-air wingsuit, starting modern-day wingsuit flying as a sport.
This unique archival footage was shot in 1997 by Joe Jennings (USA), for the DVD 'Good Stuff' and restored to 4K and Stabilized by Jarno Cordia / www.flylikebrick.com

In September 1997, i was doing the accelarated free fall course in Tallard in the Alpes. It was my 5th jump. Patrick was beside me with his wingsuit in the Pilatus. He said to everyone "the whole left side of the road is for me, you all stay on the right side" Lol
He looked at me with a big smile, wished me a good jump and then a bit later, jumped off the plane.
He was such an inspiring and friendly guy. I was so sad when he died a year later...
    Rip Deug!!

I built him his Vector 3 prototype in the very early days of V3, when he would come by RWS and hangout. RIP Patrick, you were a good friend and one of the best of the best!

One of the reasons Im trying to post these updated versions, is that skydiving (and wingsuit in specific) doesn't have to many people aware of its rich history, and pioneers. A lot of newer jumpers are not aware how long wingsuits have been around, and who took those huge first leaps. Patrick was an inspiration and one of the main strong shoulders our sport is built on..

@@mccordia As a newer jumper, thank you for restoring and sharing this. I'm currently not anywhere near being allowed to fly a wingsuit, and likely won't be for quite a while, but I only even have the option because of people like Patrick. It's crazy to think that almost all this history has occurred within my lifetime (born 1998).
RIP Patrick, thank you for being a pioneer of this sport and the nucleation point for thousands of people fulfilling their wish to fly.

Very cool. I don't feel like its all that much clearer than what I have on VHS (Good Stuff), but made me break out the old video to check it out, which I appreciate. Nice one Jarno! Thanks!

Side by side on a TV screen, the difference is quite huge. But never hurts to pop in the VHS for some quality retro entertainment!
