  • The Pace Report: "History Will Set You Free" The Jon Faddis Interview
Trumpeter and educator Jon Faddis have been a staple of the music for over five decades. The Oakland, California native was bit by the music bug when he heard and saw his hero, Dizzy Gillespie as a kid. When he moved to New York City in the early 1970s he had the honor to cut his teeth in the record industry in both the jazz and pop music side while becoming one of the most in-demand session musicians. Jon playing all kinds of music styles allowed him to develop his musical sensibilities. He's also had the opportunity to play on many film scores including Quincy Jones's iconic "The Wiz," Clint Eastwood's "The Gauntlet" and "Bird." Jon's session work includes The Village People's "Y.M.C.A', James Brown's "Get On The Good Foot", Grover Washington Jr's "Mister Magic," and Kool and the Gang's "Ladies Night."
Jon played and toured with the legendary Lionel Hampton Big Band, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Currently, Jon is the Professor of Music of Jazz Studies at Purchase College where he's grooming the next generation of jazz musicians and historians.
On this special edition of The Pace Report live from the 2022 TD James Moody Jazz Festival at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, I sat down with legendary Jon Faddis to talk about his role as an education and how history plays an important impact on Black American Music. He reflects on his involvement with jazz producer and promoter Norman Grantz as well as reflects on the legacy of the late Creed Taylor.

So glad to hear that he's a professor. It's really an obligation that once you've gained knowledge you must teach others.

I LOVED the Stormy Weather quote on West End Blues. The interview is just wonderful - so important.

Brilliant music and such extremely pertinent comments from Professor Faddis on not separating the music from America's painful but redemptive national story. Keep up the great interviews Brian. They are enjoyed here across the pond.

What political party is trying to do what? lol They're both trash. Neither are trying to do anything good. I wish he'd clarify that part.
