Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report live from the 2024 National Grid Syracuse International Jazz Festival.
Educator, historian, and saxophonist James Carter paid tribute to legendary saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis with a special set "Lookin' at Lock: The Music of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis" featuring Gerald Gibbs on piano, Hilliard Greene on bass, Kahil Kwame Bell on drums, and Satish Robertson on trumpet. Davis was one of Soul Jazz's progenitors and one of the pioneering architects of the "tenor sax battles". In this segment, Pace and James Carter reflect on Mr. Davis's musical legacy and discuss the next generation of musicians playing and studying Black American Music.
