Abstract: The Berlin Evolution Animation visualizes the development of this city’s street network and infrastructure from 1415 to the present-day, using an overlay of historic maps. The resulting short film presents a series of 17 “cartographic snapshots” of the urban area at intervals of every 30-40 years. This process highlights Berlin's urban development over 600 years, the rapid explosion of industry and population in the 19th century, followed by the destruction and violence of two world wars and then the Cold War on Berlin's urban fabric.

Zusammenfassung: Auf der Grundlage von historischen Karten visualisiert die „Animation der Wandelung Berlins“ die Entwicklung des Straßennetzwerks und der Infrastruktur Berlins von 1415 bis heute. In diesem kurzen Video wird eine Serie von 17 „kartographischen Momentaufnahmen“ der Stadt in einem Intervall von 30 - 40 Jahren präsentiert. Dadurch wird die Entwicklung der Stadt Berlin über 600 Jahre, das rapide Wachstum der Industrie und Bevölkerung im 19. Jahrhundert, die Zerstörung und Gewalt der zwei Weltkriege und abschließend des Kalten Krieges auf Berlins Stadtbild verdeutlicht.

Interesting fact: Berlin was originally a Slavic city. Its modern name is a Germanised form of the Slavic name Braline and comes from the personal name Bral, a shortened form of the Slavic compound name Bratoslav (giving glory to his brother).

Yes, it was a Slavic settlement, but it didn't become a city until many centuries later. Fun fact, because of a beer tax in the Hohenzollern Residence Tangermünde on the Elbe, beer should become more expensive there. The brewers and drinkers there didn't like that at all and they rebelled against the Hohenzollern. However, the elector had no desire to argue with people who went to the barricades to prevent a beer tax. For this reason he moved his residence to a previously insignificant small town called Berlin. Without this beer war in Tangermünde, Berlin would probably never have become the German capital, it would have remained a small town.

This city went from a swamp town into one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The imperial city of Berlin seemed like it would have never stopped growing. Tens of thousands of people living in a single kilometer. Modern day Berlin is now a shitty tourist backwater. The city has lost most of it's architecture and population growth from the war and hasn't recovered since. Nowadays a developer might be nearly killed in a riot because he simply wanted to build an apartment on a bombed out courtyard.

Fucking with "developers" who want to built stuff is kind of a Berlin Tradition...just ask the Kurfürsten.
Also...as you can see in the numbers...the population IS still growing and I'am not sure if a faster growth would be better for the city.
